Tompkins Cortland Community College Panther Welcome Crew Team Leader Position Description

Position Summary: Team Leaders for the Panther Welcome Crew provide leadership, build community, and promote new student learning and success during Pre-Enrollment Orientation, New Student Orientation, and Welcome Week activities at Tompkins Cortland Community College. The Panther Welcome Crew Team Leaders play an integral role in introducing new students to TC3 by serving as mentors and sharing their experiences as successful students. Throughout TC3s various transition programs, Welcome Crew Team Leaders assist incoming students and their families to help them feel welcomed and excited to join the campus community. Panther Welcome Crew Team Leaders support the continued transition of new students by fostering connections to campus, providing academic support, and referring students to campus resources. Panther Welcome Crew Team Leader position responsibilities: Participate actively in Pre-Enrollment Orientation sessions (April-May, class schedule permitting) for new students by: o Co-facilitating Pre-Enrollment Orientation presentations with a faculty/staff member o Assisting new TC3 students with navigating myTC3 and the online course catalog o Providing one-on-one guidance for new students in searching course sections, creating their first semester schedule (based upon courses selected by a faculty advisor), and registering online Communicate with incoming new students to provide continued connectedness to TC3 by: o Sending email updates to new students and responding to their questions via myMAIL o Providing online support to new students through the myWEB COURSES group by actively posting discussion threads, responding to new student posts, and hosting live chat sessions o Corresponding with new students via TC3 email, Facebook, and myWEB COURSES Assist in the planning for and implementation of training for the volunteer Panther Welcome Crew members o Facilitate icebreakers and other training activities o Lead peers in gaining the skills, information, and knowledge they need to successfully assist new TC3 students with the transition to college Lead new students through the Orientation and Welcome Week programming by: o Facilitating small group discussions o Addressing concerns of new students (and family members) by answering questions o Leading students between sessions, staffing information tables, and assisting with the orientation check-in process Support academic Intervention programming for continuing students on academic probation by: o Assisting with group advising sessions o Helping students make necessary adjustments to their course schedules Provide general support and leadership for new TC3 students by: o Assisting with general office tasks as needed to include, but not limited to, copying, room set-up, session preparation, phone calls, folder stuffing, filing, hanging signs, and scheduling appointments o Working in close cooperation with the staff of Student Success and Advisement Services, the Enrollment Services Center, and the College (especially faculty advisors) o Attending and actively participate in all training sessions o Representing TC3 as a positive role model for new students o Performing other duties as assigned CONTINUED

Commitment: Up to 15 hours per week from April 1-May 17, 2013 15-37.5 hours per week from May 20-August 21, 2013 Up to 15 hours per week from August 22-September 27, 2013

Compensation: $7.75 per hour Reports to: Student Success and Advisement Services Staff Helen Lang and Michelle Nightingale Qualifications: Must be a current TC3 student with a minimum GPA of 2.0 in good academic standing (to view TC3s academic standards, visit http://www.tc3.edu/catalog/pp_academic_standards.asp) Must be in good student conduct standing with the College (and the Office of Residence Life if applicable) Must have completed at least one semester of coursework at TC3 (If Spring 2013 is your first semester at TC3, you conditionally meet this qualification even though the semester has not ended yet. If hired, your position would be provisional based upon successful completion of the semester. ) Must be a matriculated student registered/enrolled in at least 6 credits in both the Spring 2013 and Fall 2013 semesters Should possess effective verbal and written communication skills, problem solving abilities, pride in being a TC3 student, a strong desire to work with new students (and their families), dedication, flexibility, and a willingness to learn Should be comfortable interacting in one-on-one and small group settings Should possess teamwork skills suitable for working with fellow student leaders and new students Recommended Qualification: One (or more) semesters service as a Panther Welcome Crew Volunteer
