Lantern Making Contest 2012

By Geleen Macapagal General De Jesus College Lantern Making Contest was launched last November 27, 2012. As a part of the Recycling Activity: Eco-Waste Management Program Part II, every class from elementary to college was encouraged to make lantern out of the following primary materials: used plastics bottles, cups, tin cans. The secondary materials consist of paper, candy/ biscuit wrappers, and plastic bags from the items bought from the school canteen. The contest mechanics and criteria were outlined as well. Top four (4) winners from the college department, top six (6) winners from the high school department and top three (3) winners from the elementary department will be chosen. Continued on page 2

By Geleen Macapagal Team Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants ( JPIA) General de Jesus College Chapter in pursuit of one of its goals Excellence participated on the recently held 16th National Federation of Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (NFJPIA) Region III Mid-Year Convention at Club Balai Isabel, Talisay, Batangas last September 20-22. Third and Fourth Year delegates attended this most prestigious event of the year of all Accountancy students in Region III. Together with the Department Head, Mr. Jeffrey Franco and JPIA-GJC adviser, Mr. KenGie Anthony Cruel, our fellow JPIAns made the school proud as they outshined almost 30 different universities and colleges within the region. De Rueda ranked third in CAT Level 3 (out of 68 participants) and was among the top 20 of CAT Cup Level 2 (out of 40 participants). Meanwhile, Castro bagged the 11th place in CAT Level 2 (out of 67 participants) and was in the top 20 of SGV Cup (out of 43 participants).

NEWS 2 GJC lists 66% LET passing rate, surpasses national passing rate
By Antonio Delgado As expected, the Education department has again surpassed the national passing rate for the Licensure Exam for Teachers (LET) conducted on September 30. First takers from GJC listed a passing rate of 65.7% (25 out of 38 examinees) surpassing the national passing rate of 49.29% for the LET (Elementary). A parade of the participants in the different competitions was held in the morning of the first day. The program proper started with the opening prayer led by Camille Ann Jalova, vice president for linkages of the Federation of Young Hoteliers and Restaurateurs (FYHRM). This was followed by the opening remarks of Mrs. Josefina Padilla, Skills Olympics 2012 overall chairman. FYHRM President Jomar Delos Santos led the presentation of participants in the competitions. A special intermission was given by the Green Hornets, which placed 1st runner-up in the cheer dance contest in the school intramurals. The True Meaning of Success

When we hear the word success, we usually perceive different meanings for we dont share the same understanding. But let me share with you what I have ascertained to this rousing woman who left an impact to me in knowing what success is. Teaching is a lifelong learning and a commitment. These were the words uttered by Dr. Bernadette O. Gallardo, the schools registrar and Head of the Social Sciences Department as the interview started. After she graduated from high school, she aspired to be a Computer Programmer but because of financial problems, she grabbed the opportunity to study here at General De Jesus College since there was a scholarship provided if she will take Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education. Sabi ng father ko noon, kapag medyo nakaluwag kami financially, pagaaralin niya ko sa course na gusto ko but it turned out na minahal ko na yung ginagawa ko. Although teaching is not her first choice as a profession, she learned to love it and found out the strong feeling of being destined or called to undertake this field. She believes that if you want to teach, youll do this by heart and at the heart of a teachers role is the promotion of learning for all pupils. That is the challenge for all the teachers. Those who dare to teach must never cease to learn. We often hear her saying, morally upright, civic-minded, and integrity, discipline, always reminding her students. And as a teacher, she wants them to be transformed into highly productive individuals. She also said that good teachers practice their craft not for the money or because they have to, but because they want to and they truly enjoy it. In teaching, hindi ka yayaman pero may reward. Mayaman ka sa mga estudyante at kakilala. Isa yun sa mga nakakatuwa. Dedicating herself to this school has so many reasons, and when asked why she chose to stay here, she said, Theres something here na hindi ko kayang iwan. Simple words yet so meaningful

he complaint filed by academics and bloggers with the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges against Senator Vicente Sotto III for alleged plagiarism in his speeches seems headed to the backburner now that the Reproductive Health bill has already been passed by both houses of Congress. Sotto has been accused of copying parts of his speeches from Internet blogs with proper attribution. Moreover, he has been accused of quoting parts of US Senator Robert Kennedys speech, again without the proper attribution. Ironically, Senator Pia Cayetano, who is from the other side of the RH debate, was also accused of violating intellectual property rights in her speeches defending the bill. It seems a shame that while ordinary students like us strive to identify all our sources in our research, public figures are just lifting phrases from others works as if these are their own. There could actually be more to the controversy regarding Sottos and Cayetanos speeches than either the RH bill or the issue of intellectual property rights. This incident reflects the Filipino copy-paste mentality and our propensity to just duplicate what has already been proven to work by others. Parang sari-sari store lang na kapag pumatok ay gagayahin na rin ng buong barangay. Even the national government exhibits this mentality. For example, the K-12 basic educational system is used abroad, so we copied them without even bothering to check if these are really applicable to the local setting. Who needs preparation and pilot testing when we could just copy the whole thing? And how about the recently passed Reproductive Health bill? Isnt it a mimicking of the population control policies implemented more developed countries? Never mind that those same countries are now experiencing aging populations as a result of these policies. There is nothing wrong with adopting policies that are being used by other countries. But the government should at least adapt these to the local conditions. One would do well to keep in mind that not all who have joined the sari-sari store bandwagon, have succeeded as well as the original.

hen I was a newly- enrolled student in the College of Education, I was looking forward to see myself get better. I was excited to learn more, hone my skills and let myself improve. Explore the unknown to see what else I can do. Dare discover another skill hidden from within. Let myself know me even better. I was enthusiastic about meeting new people, making friends and enjoy the college life. A little just like you, young and hopeful. But it proved difficult. Classes were hard, activities were gruelling and most of all, the adjustments were harsh. I never knew that college life would be this taxing to me. How come I was not informed that college was this cruel? I thought to myself. It felt like suddenly finding myself in a rocky boat over an angry sea and panicking, as a result, I plunged face-first into the bitter coldness of the water. I made a lot of mistakes in my freshman year. I brought my personal problems to school. I carried the happygo-lucky behaviour with me. I was so unprofessional, so unpredictable and so unrefined you could not distinguish me from a student who belongs to the lower section. I admit that I was wild then, yet to be tamed. How could I say I was not? My, I even picked fights! My classmates are the living testimonies to what I have been. I never knew the intricateness of the course I have enrolled in. I never understood how noble the goal before me was. Yes, I may have participated at school, but I regret that I could not say satisfactorily That was then, until our school slowly changed me. Moral ethics and professionalism came like a cold breeze in the night, soothing and refreshing, coursing through me. I found myself get better over time, knowing where I got faulty in my past so as not to reiterate my unsightly blunders again. I felt myself be a better person than I was, and was striving to be a better person than I am today. What was funny was that whenever my classmates and I compare what we have been and what we are now, we note a significant change. We can see the embarrassing mistakes, and hope to cancel it out by being better today. We have finally trodden the path to venerability. To date, I am currently enjoying my course and I am happily adjusted to college life, though there is more to be adapted to, as there is more to be achieved. What I am now, is thanks to GJC. I have written this for you freshmen, whatever the course you have chosen, so that you will be guided in your adjustment period, and that you will be a better batch than we were; that you will not repeat the same errors I did. It doesnt matter if I belong to the Education Department and you from another, but we, the batch before you, have been there too, in the freshman stage, and we know its hard, for we have experienced what you might be experiencing now. I find it funny that even if I dont know you personally one by one, but I feel compassion to tell you to hold on, strive on and keep on. Always give your best shot at every subject or activity, also, never miss any competition or seminar you can join in, grasp all those opportunities along the way and most of all, I encourage you to live our schools vision and mission from early on, especially the line: DIE for God and Country, for sooner or later you may regret that you havent, as was my case.

Noon pa man ang Pilipinas ay nasa ilalim na ng pamumuno ng iilang makapangyarihan at kilalang pamilya. Pangkaraniwan na sa mga anak, asawa, kapatid o iba pang kamag-anak ng isang pulitiko na tumakbo sa kaparehas o iba pang posisyon sa gobyerno. Ang kasanayang ito ay tinatawag ngang Political Dynasty at Oligarchy naman sa Political Science. The 1987 Constitution

of the Philippines states in Article II Section 26, The state shall guarantee equal access to opportunities for public service, and prohibit political dynasties as may be defined by law. Samakatuwid, ang konstitusyon mismo ang nagbabawal sa kasanayang ito. Subalit paano nga ba ipagbabawal ang bagay na walang malinaw na depinisyon at diskripsyon? Kung ating pag-iisipan ang dynasty, walang duda ay tumutukoy sa pamilya at ayon sa Article 217 of the Civil Code at Article 150 ng Family Code, Family is already defined as referring to husband and wife , parents and children, ascendants and descendants, and brothers and sisters. and expressive. Brief answer yet gives me a sense of admiring her for committing herself and for her faithfulness to this school. Newly promoted as the schools registrar, Dr. Gallardo shared some of her realizations. According to her, in achieving something that one wants to achieve, theres a process. Success takes time. Its not just about studying well but also improving and upgrading yourself professionally. Its a continuous learning. And every promotion not just comes from who you are but from persistent and hard-working effort in doing something. There is no accomplishment without determination. Handling her position as a registrar is not so easy. Yes, there are so many responsibilitieskeeping the records of the students, being responsible with all the documents needed, etc. And according to her, one of the challenges in her profession is: Every day is a challenge to me and one of the challenges is the adjustment. Its my first year to be positioned in this work as a registrar at wala akong background kaya at first, mahirap. But in spite of the challenges she is dealing with, she wants to express how delighted she is in her line of work. She considers that it is a great privilege for her to be a part of this school, to work with people whom she treated as her second family. Through thick and thin, kasama ko ang General de Jesus. that a man carrying guilt over his heartthat is a perfect torture. That was one of the best revenge; imagine a man suffering from guilt everyday of his lifeso much better than her plans. Each time they talked, she tried to add more guilt so he would be more miserable. Later on, she realized, the satisfaction fades, and she started to feel the same miserythe guilt of not giving him the chance to explain, the guilt of enjoying his suffering and the guilt of not forgiving. The feeling was dark and heavy. That night, she decided she should hear it all. It was another phone call. She threatened him that she will never answer his calls again if he will not tell her everythingthe whole reason why he betrayed her. After much argumentation that it was not safe to talk on the phone, shes convinced him. It was around 11:00 p.m., everyone was asleep, she was standing at the open front door as she listened. A woman knows when a man lies, and she knows he was telling the truth. After hearing the story, she broke down and cried like a child. Plain and simpleblack mail. He did everything to protect the targets of harm Allie and his family. It was a tough decision for him, but he did the best that he could. And when everything was over, he came backbut it was too late. Promises were broken, trusts were crushed, plans were ruined, Allies family no longer trusts him. She understands him, but she knows it would be too difficult to explain everything to her family so they would accept him again. Revenge breaks not just the person whom one wants to get even with, but the person who inflicts it as well. Life will let you know why remorse cannot be coercedit can only be discovered. If you are seeking for revenge, ask yourself, what good will it do to you, in the long run? It will not give you real happiness; and by carrying that dark passion of revenge, you are punishing yourself for the other persons mistake. Let it go. You still have a life to live. By imposing revenge she broke him, and in the process she broke herself, too. They saw each other after that call, several times, and there he related the story again. She gave him her forgiveness, which was long overdue. And with bitter tears they consoled each other why it can never be the same again.

Naranasan mo na bang makaramdam ng lungkot o inggit dahil matapos mong bisitahin ang account ng friend mo, nakita mo ang mga magagandang bagay at pangyayari sa kaniya at tila wala siyang problema? Badtrip, dahil ang buhay mo, hindi kasing engrande ng sa kaniya, and worse, alam mong mayroon kang mga kinakaharap na problema. Unfair, di ba? Ang totoong problema, masyado tayong nagiging dependent sa kung ano yung nakikita natin. Ateng, hindi lang picture ang pwedeng i-enhance. Pati kwento ng buhay, pwede na ring i-photoshop. Yung akala natin perfect ang istorya sa facebook, sa totoong buhay, hindi pala. Wag tayong mabuhay sa mundo na hindi natin alam kung ilang porsiyento ang totoo. Maraming advantages ang facebook na talaga naming napapakinabangan natin ng husto, pero may mga downfalls din ito. Ang totoong buhay, wala sa cyber space, kundi nasa kalye, nasa jeep, nasa kanto ni Caridad, nasa bahay mo at bahay ko. Ang totoong buhay, may mga problema, hindi ka laging maganda at hindi dahil gusto mo, makukuha mo (source: Sari, The Mistress). Ikaw, saang mundo umiikot ang buhay mo?

And to his confessions that he couldnt sleep at night, couldnt concentrate on everything, and was very miserable thinking that hes caused her pain. He asked her to forgive him. No, he BEGGED her to forgive him. She told him to explain what happened and why they ended up that way but he said he couldnt say it over phone and asked if he could see her so he could explain personally. She said, No, you cannot see me, and no, I will never forgive you. She smiled, said bye, and pressed the end call button. It was more satisfying than she thought. She knew he wasnt lying, and the thought that he was guilty, and was miserable because of what hes done gave her the sweetest pleasure of revenge. And those calls happened several more times. He, begging for forgiveness, and she, saying she will never forgive him. Each time it has given her satisfaction, and she knows

Revenge, in the long run, is hurting two persons: the sinner and the one who sought revenge. When it comes to giving trust, Allie tries not to give it fully to anyone. She always doubts people, and yes, it makes life harder, but safer. When she is to involve herself into someone, she doesnt give her full confidence, unless her family backs the person up. And then she met this man, who gained not just her trust, but her familys as well. It was his amazing personality that drew her to himshe can see herself in him, they were so much alike that sometimes it both scares and excites her. He is a young businessman and hes got intelligence developed by experiences and observation. no explanation coming from him. Shes expecting that even though she does not communicate with him anymore, he will at least send a text message that explains it all, just for her peace of mind. His text messages are all about apologizing, but with no further details. She was guessing, and shes always assumed in the most conservative manner, which is the worst possible scenario that could have happenedbetrayal. That was a big down fall for her. It could have been less dreadful if she did not involve her family. She kept in mind not to let them see how devastated she was. And this man, who broke her trust, should receive the best revenge ever created. She knows things about him and his familyknows ways enough to break him. In just a blink of an eye, the once beautiful relationship turned into a nightmare of woven revenge. Day and night she was plotting ways on how to get evenchoosing carefully where and when to start. She visualized how miserable hell be when her plans become successful. She laughed thinking how very simple everything will be, and how great the damage it would cost him. Hell regret the moment that he betrayed her, maybe even the moment that he met her. She wanted to hurt him, twice, thrice the pain that she felt. Planning revenge was easy, but thinking of doing evil things to another personit was actually one of the hardest things to bear. It consumed herconsumed her whole being. It turned her into a monstera wailing monster. And she knows that even though anger flares out from her, a small part of her still longed for a clear explanation of what really

idol ko naman si Winnie Monsod. Nagkataon na sama-sama sa isang line yung Economics, Finance at Marketing kaya napakahaba talaga ng pila. Yung kasama kong mag-enroll, inaya ako sa mas maikling pila. Dahil tanghali na din at gusto kong makauwi agad, sumama ko. Maikli lang yung napuntahan naming pila, pangatlo na agad kami. Nong nagfifill-up na ng subjects at magbabayad na, non ko lang nalaman na Accountancy pala yung napilahan namin. At dahil sayang yung pila, at nandun na ko sa harap, wala nang back out-back out. Surprises and big changes awaited in college. Nung nagcollege na, nakakashock kasi magkaibang-magkaiba yung kultura ng General at Wesleyan. Doon, hahayaan ka talaga. Kaya kapag hindi ka nag-aral, kawawa ka. Ang isang naging challenge sakin, yung nakikita kong hirap na hirap kami sa Accounting ng mga kaklase ko, tapos yung teacher, ngingitian lang kami. Even though he is focused in academics, Mr. Franco still managed to practice his leadership skills during college years. He founded an organization, the Young Accounting Executives which the school approved and recognized. It became an active organization for Accountancy students, aside from the existing JPIA. He ran as the student governor, and unlike the past years, surprisingly, no one competed against him. Thus, he was elected. At that time, he was in fourth year college. He graduated in 2003, and received the award Magna Cum Laude. Right after graduation, he started working in GJC as a teacher in the subjects Management, Marketing and Finance. When asked why he did not take the board exam after graduating, his response was: Pressure. Ibang klaseng pressure. Kapag kinain ka ng pressure, ikaw mismo ang magda-down sa sarili mo. And what made him decide to take the exam? Yung pakiramdam na kapag hindi ka pa CPA, parang may kulang. Yung iba kasi, medyo nalalansi kapag may trabaho na, hindi na lang nagte-take dahil nga sumusweldo na. Aside from that, a deeper reason was revealed. May pangyayari na naging dahilan para magpursige ko. At one point habang nagtatrabaho, naospital ako, almost a month yun. Ang dahilan, depression. Kung anu-ano nang tests ang ginawa ng doctor, dahil sinusubukang i-trace kung ano yung sakit ko. Alam ko naman na wala. Ang pakiramdam ko lang kasi non, parang ayaw ko nang mabuhay. Hanggang sa kinausap ako ng doctor at sinabi sakin, Kapag hindi nagbago ang isip mo, ang paggaling mo, nakadepende na lang sayo. At yun, yun ang naging turning point ng lahat. Para kong biglang nagising at narealize kong may buhay pa pala kong pwedeng harapin at marami pa kong pwedeng gawin. October 2005, nagtake ako ng board exam. He got married in 2007, and is now enjoying fatherhood as he watch his two sons grow up. His leisure time is usually spent reading books about leadership and economics and bonding with his family. So far, the greatest challenge he has faced regarding his work is the whole preparation for the board exam of the pilot batch. Limang taon naming iniintindi yung board exam na yan. Habang nagrereview yung mga graduates natin, siyempre dapat nandun kami, dumadalaw, nagaalala. Habang nageexam sila, kasama kaming kinakabahan. Yung pagaabang sa result ng board exam ang pinakamahaba at pinakamahirap na paghihintay sa lahat. After all the hard work, there is no doubt the dean and the whole department is now earning the fruits of their labor. At siyempre, ang pinakarewarding, yung naging result ng board exam. Naalala ko pa yung sinabi ng isang professor ko noon, na sa tatlong anak niya, ni isa walang naging CPA, pero proud siya kasi yung mga estudyante niya, naging CPA. Nakakarelate na ko ngayon. Kahit papaano pwede nating ipagyabang na yung siyam

Natutuwa ka bang maraming tao ang ikinakahiya ang kanilang mga sarili dahil sa ginawa mong panlilibak? Alam kong sa huli, magsisisi ka at hihingi ng tawad sa mga taong pininsala mo. Pero isipin mo na lang na para akong isang puting damit na tinapunan ng pintura. Alam kong kaya kong linisin ang aking pangalan sa mga taong naging iba ang tingin sa akin. Pero ang totoong kulay ko hindi na maibabalik sa dati, samakatuwid, hindi na babalik ang tiwala na ibinigay nila sa akin. Ang mga paninira mo na sinabi laban sa akin, nakatatak na sa isipan ng mga tao,
