Mark 9:14-29

Mk 9:14 (NIV)
When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around
them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. Mark 9:15 As soon as all the
people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.

And he asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?”

And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son
to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. Mk 9:18 (ESV) And whenever it seizes
him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So
I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.”

And he answered them, “O faithless generation, how long am I to be with
you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.”

So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the
boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the
mouth. Mk 9:21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?”
“From childhood,” he answered.

Mk 9:22 (ESV)
And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if
you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” Mk 9:23 (ESV) And Jesus
said to him, “‘If you can! All things are possible for one who believes.”

Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my
unbelief!”

When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the
evil spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him
and never enter him again.”

The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy
looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.” 27 But Jesus took him
by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.

After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why
couldn’t we drive it out?” Mk 9:29 He replied, “This kind can come out only by
prayer.’”
