The public sector in which building designers gain employment include housing and building facilities departments of local, state, and federal governments. They are in high demand by other allied professions like Architects, Engineers, Town Planners and Builders for their expertise. Building designers can also work as sole traders under various state licencing requirements.
Qualifications
Building Designers in many states need formal accreditation. The qualifications that TasTAFE offer are nationally recognised. In Tasmania, the qualifications relate to the following levels: Level Building Designer Architectural, Domestic Building Designer Architectural, Limited Qualification Diploma of Building Design Diploma of Building Design

Delivery Modes
All courses are delivered through the Clarence Campus by flexible delivery (a mixture of Web and digital based resources). You will be assessed on assignments that you mail to us in hard copy. In some units you will be required to sit exams in your local area.
Academic Year
The academic year starts from the time enrolments are taken in early February until mid November. All assignments for non-examinable units must be received by the Built Environment by the end of October. However, if your unit of study includes an exam, all assignments for the unit must be received by mid October.
Exams
Exams are held annually in November. Information is sent to all students in July explaining the examination process and listing all units with an exam. Students must apply to sit exams and are accepted on the condition that assignments for the applicable unit will be submitted by the due date.
Course Duration
To be effective, study should be regular and consistent. Each student should plan their own study program so that they proceed at a pace that will suit their individual needs and goals. The table below provides indicative timeframes for study at each level. However, courses offered will vary between subject areas. Students may complete a course in a shorter on longer timeframe depending on their individual circumstances. Course Certificate III Certificate IV Diploma Advanced Diploma Duration 6 months 1 year 2 years 1 year (after completion of Diploma) Study per Week 20 hours 20 hours 20 hours 20 hours
Use of Computers
Students will need to have access to a computer with an internet connection. You will also need to have an email address either at home or at work (with your employers permission).

Entry Requirements
The entry requirements are competency based in communication, language, skills, literacy, numeracy, computing, attitude and personal qualities. Building industry experience may be an advantage. Course Diploma Requirement Successful completion of year 12 OR Students without formal entry requirements as described above, who can demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills and have the potential to complete the course.
Work Experience
Working within the industry will help in your understanding of the course. We realise local employment in your chosen field of study can be difficult to obtain but dont be put off trying. Any practical experience is valuable. Make sure you keep a log or diary of work experience and obtain references wherever possible; these may even qualify you for recognition. With a course such as this, you are required to gain your own practical experience. Remember, this is extremely important. Whilst some subjects require you to do specific practical tasks, students who actively seek practical experience usually perform better in assessments. This relates to their ability to apply their new working knowledge. Another advantage is that you become known within the industry which greatly improves your future employment prospects.

Course Outlines
Introduction
The following table suggests a study path. When enrolling in units, students should refer to the suggested study path to determine the sequence in which to undertake each unit. Changes to the suggested study path can be made in consultation with a teacher. Note: a selection of units will be available to study in this academic year. A teacher will advise you on the available units for enrolment.
Enrolling
Introduction
Enrolment counselling days are held in Tasmania prior to the commencement of the academic year. Dates are publicised on the TasTAFE web site at: www.TasTAFE.tas.edu.au Interstate student are counselled either on the phone or by email. All courses delivered via distance education are self paced. With the assistance of a teacher, you decide how many units you wish to tackle during the academic year. These are the units you will enrol in. If you find you have time to undertake additional units, you can enrol in more units later in the year. Refer to Studying at TasTAFE in this booklet for the academic year time frame.
Prior to Enrolling
The programs are available to anyone who meets the entry requirements. Refer to About the Course in this booklet for entry requirements. All applicants should submit a current resume/CV and copies of any academic transcripts they may hold prior to enrolling. This is to ensure that you meet the entry requirements. A desktop assessment will be prepared for you to identify units for which you may potentially obtain recognition. It is important to note that this is an informal process and you must still formally apply for recognition once you have enrolled in the applicable unit. The results of your desktop assessment will be posted to you. This letter will give you an indication of what units you should commence with as well. For more information on recognition, refer to the Recognition of Existing Skills and Knowledge handout included in the information pack.

Enrolment Forms
You will need to fill in the following forms: Enrolment Form including documentation required as proof of identity and, if applicable, proof of concession Tick Sheet lists all units available in the course and associated costs Sponsor Form if your workplace is paying your fees Forms may be emailed, faxed or posted to the Built Environment team. If you post your forms, please mark the envelope Private and Confidential.
Recognition
Recognition will allow you to be formally assessed in a unit based on relevant skills and knowledge you have gained from your previous studies and work experiences. To apply for recognition, you must enrol in the unit for which you wish to be assessed. For more information on recognition, refer to the Recognition of Existing Skills and Knowledge handout included in the information pack.

Cost
Fees Fees can be paid by credit card (Mastercard or Visa), cheque or money order (payable to TasTAFE) or cash. Each unit has a standard fee of which the total of all units in which you enrol for the academic year is capped. Commercial fees are listed on the Tick Sheet. Refunds Please note that you should not enrol in units you dont think you can finish within the academic year, as once you have activated the unit on WebCT, no refunds are available and you will need to re-enrol in the unit when you decide to continue your studies. Interstate clients are not eligible for refunds once they are enrolled. If an interstate client re-enrols in a unit in consecutive years, the commercial fee is not payable. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Fees are payable for units which are assessed for recognition, except for units where a Credit Transfer is applicable. Interstate clients are not required to pay a commercial fee for units that they have had recognition recommended as part of a desktop assessment.
