Glenn Gillis:The Field A Little town in the north west part of Quebec Canada (1978)

Chapter 1 The Ball Game For a month of May, the weather was most pleasant. There was a warm gentle breeze coming from the southwest. After such a long and cold winter, it was pleasant to notice people sitting on their front porches exposing their faces to the sun in hopes of getting a tan, while others were taking walks, visiting neighbors. This was definitely a sign that summer was just around the corner. At the southern edge of town, a plow was circling the old ball-field. It was tonight that the new season games were to begin. It was a serene little town, and thats the way the people of Golden-Valley liked it. Everybody knew each other and for the most part got along just fine. Tonight, the Val-dOr Beavers were opposing the Sullivan Wild Cats. In a town such as this one, there were not much activities going on. The carnival returned every summer in July. Now that was enough to attract people from small villages near by. During the winter, there was hockey, of course, this was the sportsmans obsession, but baseball was very popular every summer in Golden-Valley, much more than any other summer game. In back of the old bleachers, cars were being parked long side the gravel road. At 8:00pm, the high lampposts were already shining bright above the field. Although there was a small canteen, which furnished hot dogs chips and beverages, some folks enjoyed bringing along a little flask of alcohol, while others preferred a thermos filled with hot coffee in case it got a little chilly during the evening. The old baseball bleachers needed more than just a few coats of fresh paint. Now that there was a new baseball field neighboring the arena at the northern part of town, the old one was being neglected. Eventually this old one would have to be replaced by some new project. , but for the moment, the same Faithfulls that came every year were still enjoying it. *** There were new houses being built on both sides of the road bringing to the ball-field, eventually, these houses would surely reach the ball field. As of now, surrounding the field was miles and miles of forest. 3

Glenn Gillis:The Field At the far end of the field within the placid forest lurked a mysterious presence. No one had the slightest idea that they were being carefully watched. This mysterious presence was monitoring their every movement with the utmost caution. Not even the sound of a cracking twig could be heard. Their ominous aspect seeks the tranquility of the night. Tonight something strange was accruing. It had startled them as the bright lights went on above the ball-field. Their natural sensors probed the humans as they arrived at the field. The worm blooded beings startled them, knowing that warm blood meant week and easy to manipulate. However, these warm-blooded beings did have the means to defend themselves with primitive, but still deadly weapons. These warm-blooded beings were much taller and stronger than they, but never as fast. This was not the first time they experimented on the warm-blooded. Eventually, they will get what they are missing. The enticement device was sure to function. They would wait. New attempts would have to be done, but in due course, they would test it on the bigger worm blooded beings, but for now, the weakest were the young. *** Approximately one hundred feet to the left hand side of the field, crossing the gravel road, was a primary school. The schoolyard was in the back of this. Two swings and a small sand pile were available for children to enjoy. The school subdivided the ball-field from the schoolyard. Generally, when there was a ball game, some of the parents would bring their children to the schoolyard with a baby sitter. Alan Beaudoin, his wife Elizabeth, and young five-year-old son Charlie arrived in a hurry that night. Knowing that they were late, Alan parked the Ford pickup in a hurry just by the school yard. As Alan gets out, Elizabeth picks Charlie up from the passengers seat, and puts him down beside her then closes the door of the truck beside them. Alan grabs his bat and met from the back of the truck, puts his mitt under his armpit and bat on his shoulder then looks at his wife. Honey, you sure Barbara could make it tonight? Shed better, replies Elizabeth with a little tone of sarcasm in her voice. Suddenly Charlie is excited. Mommy mommy look, its Barbara. Hi! the sitter says as she approaches. The teenager parts the long blond hair from her face blown by a sudden wind. Before leaving Charlie with the sitter, Elizabeth kisses him on the cheek. 4

Glenn Gillis:The Field Charlie, you be a nice boy now, mommy and daddy will be back to pick you up after the game. At that instant, Charlies attention turns towards the small playground. Maybe he wont be alone tonight to play, as he caught a glimpse of other children just near the park. Too excited, he just nodded his head, showing that he understood the warning and pulls on Barbaras hand impatiently. The sitter takes Charlies hand and is about to enter the park with him. Waite! shouts his mother as she turns towards the truck. His toys As his mother comes back, Charlie grabs his toys and begins to run towards the playground dropping a few on the sidewalk. Barbara picks up the fallen toys and proceeds towards the park. Have a nice evening. Barbara offers. Thank you Barbara. replies Alan as he hurries towards the field. Charlie enters the park, but is surprised, he was sure that he had seen more children there just a moment ago. Two were good enough for there would be more toys to share. *** Although their accurate camouflage, they sensed that the smallest of them might have noticed their presence. They would have to be more cautious. Slowly they moved back into the woods. Maybe the worm-blooded would leave with their lights and ways of transportation later on. The enticement device would have to be used on one of the weakest of them. As they probed the warm-blooded, they concluded that only the taller ones could not see their camouflage, in the nervous system in youths activates a natural un-cloaking device in the brain which you lose during growth procedures in life. Now they knew, that the smaller beings were the young and weak. *** Elizabeth wasnt in what you could call the best of moods. First of all, she didnt care much for baseball or any other sport for that fact, but she just didnt have the guts to tell Alan. The hobby that she preferred the most was "fashion, shopping and makeup" to hide the few freckles that she had.

Glenn Gillis:The Field Five foot two, slightly chubby with short brown hair made her bright yellow dress stand out, but thats the way Elizabeth liked things; flashy. As she walked in the rough gravel long side the road, she was hoping she wouldnt break a heel. She certainly didnt want to dirty her dress either. She was proud of her dress, but then why shouldnt she, it cost her a fortune just like most of her wardrobe. It sure was taking a considerable amount out of Alans paycheck, but most of it came from her mother dearest. No one would ever find her in jeans or sandals like everybody mostly wore; oh no, she always thought of it as paltry, pathetic. She was frustrated as she slowly walked towards the ball field bleachers. She had to carry the Damned cushion again. The least he could have done was walk with me, and carry this Damned cushion. *** Charlie is happy to see that his two friends are there. Little Normand Chass and Linda Cardinal smile as they see Charlie enter the small playground. Barbara Adams leaves Charlie in the sand pile and walks towards one of the swings. A book is in her hand: a novel of romance. Barbara loves reading love stories and will try to finish it tonight, if she can. She tried desperately to wrap it up during the week, but was always interrupted by something or another. She is about to sit on one of the swings when something distracts her. She looks towards the woods near by. What was...? Shes a little confused. She could have sworn she just saw children, but that is impossible children playing at this time in the woods; however, it gave her the creeps. Come on girl, theres nothing there; it was just your imagination playing tricks on you again. *** Elizabeth finds a place on one of the lower bleachers, puts the cushion down and sits on it. Just a little higher among the crowd she notices Helen Chass and Jennifer Cardinal is waving at her. She waves back, but turns her attention to the game which just started. Impulsively, both Jennifer and Helen look at each other with a slight grin. I wonder if the snob brought along some beer, asked Jennifer with a chuckle. Helen couldnt help herself, but laugh. Definitely not she replies. 6

Glenn Gillis:The Field Helen and Jennifer got along together very well, as if they were sisters. In the early seventies, they hung around with the cool gang. They both dropped out of school before the twelfth grade and eloped with two of the coolest dudes around. One was a musician and so was the other. Just about everyone their generation knew who Hubert Chass and Jessie Cardinal were. Jessie and Hubert were only two of the six members that played in one of the best jazz bands around. Many girls tried their chances with them in the past, but without success. There were only two girls that attracted their attention and they considered them to be the prettiest around. After dropping out of school, both couples finally found equitable apartments. Their parents were very displeased with the idea, but after numerous arguments, they finally gave in. Two years later, both couples were married, but contrary to Elizabeth and Alan, they got married at the town hall. It was cheaper and just as legitimate, but Elizabeth had a different opinion about marriage and so did her parents. She would never think of getting married at a courthouse, it was considered a disgrace to her, but mostly to her family. To Elizabeths family, it was everything or nothing, period. Money was no problem for the wedding, for the Carters were wealthy people. Today Jessie works for a construction company. After a few years of trade courses in mechanics, Hubert is now working for (TEXACO) garage down Main Street. Alan Beaudion is always doing his best to please Elizabeth. With the help of his father-in-law, Alan found himself a job working for (ABITIBI TRANSPORTS) and is always sure to have a promising offer as assistant manager. Jennifer and Helen are still the best of friends, but raising children sure takes a lot out of a person, so that stabilized them a bit, but they buy back the lost time whenever theres a ball game. *** Cheers coming from the ball field could be heard on the playground. The children are having fun sinking their tiny hands into the sand making trails and everything they can imagine. Little Normand Chass suddenly catches a glimpse of the other children in the bushes beside the small park. He thinks that maybe they are playing hide and seek. He looks at Barbra to see if she too had also noticed, but her mind is in her book and she is totally consumed by LORD EDWARD who is trying to convince the princess of his passionate love for her. Normand takes another glance to the edge of the woods, but nothing. He decides its unimportant and just carries on with what he was doing. After a little while, Normand touches 7

Glenn Gillis:The Field something in the sand, he pulls it out and the children look at it with awe. It seems to be a small triangular object. The side of the small triangular object is a very bright red, the center of it is a light blue which for some strange reason begins to flash and glimmer. *** Lurking in the obscurity of the woods, they are now agitated as their red vision scans the young beings near by. Although their technology is light-years ahead of us, compassion is inconsistent to their species. Just like cold-blooded reptiles, their young hatch from eggs. Their large circular black eyes are just as sensitive to the light as that of a bat, but are highly superior to that of the owl at night. Their insect like legs permits them to move as swiftly as a chipmunk. Their body structure and substantial matter are very complicated, half reptile and half insect. They have the incredible capability of camouflage, closely imitating other beings. They sense that their enticement device is functioning; new experiments will be vital with their new bait. Again, they know that one of the beings thinks he noticed their presence. They will have to be quick to act now. *** The little object begins to vibrate in their hands and is easy to make the children laugh. Their laughter attracts Barbras attention. She looks at them with a smile, closes her book, gets out of the swing, and walks towards the sandpile. Hay-, whats so funny? asked Barbara as she joins the children in their laughter. Suddenly Barbara can see why the children are having such fun. She takes the strange object from their hands and examines it with awe. The object is so light as if there was nothing in her hands at all. She wonders what it could be. She never saw anything like it before. As she examines it, the object begins to vibrate. Surprised by the sudden movement, she drops it in the sand. At that precise moment, a sudden twist of the wind slowly circulars the sand pile, then faster and faster lifting up the dust, twigs and leaves like a mini tornado. The children are afraid as they hold onto Barbara for security. Strangely, the wind and dust do not enter the sand pile. Panic overcomes the sitter as she examines the small object, which is glowing even brighter now. A flash of blue light discharges from the object striking the four of them where they stand. Like static electric, it follows the current through the veins 8

Glenn Gillis:The Field paralyzing them. The stun provokes a strange effect upon them. Their eyesight is blurred and can only distinguish but shadowy movements around them, but slowly their eyesight returns revealing the horror that is observing them. *** It was 11:30pm when the ninth round came to its end. (The Golden Valley Beavers) had won. Soon the old bleachers will be deserted once again. Vehicles parked long side the gravel road, were slowly leaving the field. The lampposts above the field will be kept lit until the grounds are completely empty. Alan and Elizabeth were already walking towards the park. Alan was carrying the cushion. Hubert Chass and his wife Helen accompanied Jessie Cardinal and his wife Jennifer. This year, contrary to last years game, Hubert was very good at striking the ball, which surprised Jessie. Two straight home runs, now that sure was something else. Hey Hubert, wailed Jessie from behind. If you keep hitting the ball the way you did tonight, were liable to be playing against the big leagues. Laughter Thanks for the compliment Jessie, but a-- Hubert looks over his shoulder towards Jessie with a large smile. I think I will keep playing against our little home teams for the moment. Chuckles Alan threw his bat and mitt behind the pickup truck and headed with Elizabeth towards the playground. As all three couples entered the small playground, they noticed that it was empty. There was something very strange in the sand pile. A large black circle surrounded the sand pile, and in the center was a book: still smoking. WHERE AER THE CHILDREN? exclaimed Jennifer in shock. Elizabeth looked at Alan with concern. Where on earth could Barbara have gone with the children? BAARBRAAAH! Alan shouted. They began shouting their names, but there was no answer. Jessie began examining the half-scorched book, which remained in the center of the sand pile. Why was this book burning? The sand felt warm, almost hot. Something was very wrong here. He let go the book and joined the others as they shouted the childrens names. They searched the entire schoolyard, but nothing. Near by, empty swings were gently swaying from a gentle wind. Moments later they had decided to inform the police. As they were about to enter their cars, suddenly Alan spotted something moving at the far end of the field. Over there! Alan cried out pointing towards the end of the field. 9

Glenn Gillis:The Field They hurried toward the edge of the field. Elizabeth lost her temper after stumbling over one of her high heels while trying to keep up. As soon as they reached the children they tried questioning them, but it was useless. They would only cry and mumble something about a toy that had been taken away from them. Alan somehow tried again. Charlie, Charlie its OK mommy and daddy are here. Charlie-, listen, what happened, and where is Barbara? Dont (sniff) know. Charlie repeated weeping. It was no use; Charlie could not stop himself from sobbing. All three in fact complained about having a headache. Elizabeth was more than steaming with temper. Not only was she pissed at Barbara for leaving Charlie alone while running off with... some presumed boyfriend of hers, but the new dress that she had bought had grass stains on it. This was just a little too much, as for Barbara the police could take care of her. If she thinks she could get away with this... First thing Elizabeth had in mind would be to call the police as soon as she got home. I dont think she will be baby-sitting anywhere anymore. Two and a half weeks after the incident, there was still no trace of Barbara Adams. The inquiry was going on its third week. Speculation had it that Barbara Adams had run off with a new boyfriend; however, the investigation would go on further. There was still no logical explanation found concerning the burnt book found in the sand pile.

Glenn Gillis:The Field Chapter 2 Bad Dreams June 15-1985 The snow accompanied with its cold relentless northern winds had at last receded three weeks ago. Sand and dust remain in several parts of streets and sidewalks in town. The branches of the trees were already beginning to bud. A spring shower had engendered a fresh scent of verdure into the air. Followed by the shower was a warm breeze coming from the south that offered high hopes for a wonderful summer. In mid afternoon, there was the beginning of an eclipse that attracted the towns attention. Two hours later, it was over, but not the chatter, for this was something interesting to talk about. Near the southern edge of town, the gentle wind blows throughout the old abandoned ball-field twisting and turning up tiny whirlwinds of dust. Old graffiti carvings remained on the bleachers. At nine oclock pm, the northwestern horizon was a bright color of pink as the sun gave off its last appearance. The Ooooh of an owl could be heard in the forest nearby. At ten oclock pm, the field is in pitch darkness. At the far end of the field, a faint blue light glimmers. Zooming in closer and closer towards the end of the field, large black eyes are watching, waiting. *** Saturday: June 16 Things have not changed much in twelve years. The old part of town which was called The Village because of it being mostly log cabins, were still being preserved by those that still lived in them. Today the village is a historical tourist attraction sight. In the northern part of town, on main street, Henry Heinz still opens his little ice-cream parlor as he does every summer every summer, and as usual, picks the prettiest girls in town to work for him. They all looked very sexy in their short orange jumpers. Henry Heinz was going on fifty-four years of age and even with the hairpiece, everyone knew that he was bald. He really thought he looked attractive. The oldest of the girls working for him was Brenda Waters, Mr. Heinz favorite. Of course that is on cause of the little secret affair they were having. Brenda was twenty-eight and worked there the longest. She really did not care for the old fart, as long as her salary was higher than the others, and that he kept giving her presents she would give him what he wanted.

11

Glenn Gillis:The Field The youngest of the girls was sixteen going on seventeen. Cardinal. The other three girls were about the same age as her. Her name was Linda

Down forth-avenue the old LAVOIES RENT A BICYCLE sign was still hanging. Its been there ever since 1960.The rust was eating its way at it, but the old man Lavoie still fixes a bike or two every once in a while. It used to be a real gold mine back in the sixties and seventies, but the style changes through the years, and so do bikes. Now trail bikes were in so things began to slow down for Lavoie. Nobody wanted ten speeds any more; besides, there were other bicycle stores popping up here and there with newer equipment. The SIGMA mine, just a mile out of town, could still be heard blowing its whistle at four pm which meant that a days work had just ended and a new shift was about to begin. Now that there was an industrial park with a prefabricated housing factory Unit, and a plywood factory, many new faces could be seen in town. There was a new part being built at the western edge of town. Except for some small modifications, every new building seems to be identical to the other. There still was no lawn surrounding the prefabricated house that Jessie Cardinal had just bought three weeks earlier. Although every yard has been plowed and leveled, two large spruce trees had been left in the front yard. The streets would be paved soon. Many of the new foundations were waiting for the houses to be deposed on. One of the back upstairs screen windows was still open. Linda Cardinal was cleaning up her room as her mother Jennifer told her to clean up the mess before it got worst. The wall-to-wall carpet matched the pink and purple designs on the wallpaper in her room. Still after a week, the smell of fresh paint remained lingering. It was 8:15pm when Linda had finished cleaning up. A cool summer breeze entered the room. As she proceeded to close the window, she suddenly felt an odd sensation. Far out in the western horizon, the sky was of a bright light orange color. Like a pious painting, beams of sunlight spreading across the large cotton white clouds almost to announce the coming presence of God. She just stood there staring at the light beams across the clouds as if, it reminded her of something long ago. Although the scenery was beautiful, she was afraid. It could have been a, a dream, and a bad dream, yes; maybe that is what it was, but she knew that she was not the only one to have such dreams. Once at school, Charlie Beaudion had come up with the subject as a couple of friends were talking about their dreams, but what astonished her the most was that it resembled the same kind of bad dream as hers. He said that in his dream Normand Chass and herself accompanied him. It had to do with a beam of light that immobilized them. Although they all tried desperately to escape from it, they could not. She wondered if Normand Chass could have had the same dream, but if he did, he never said anything about such a dream. 12

Glenn Gillis:The Field Suddenly she felt the dampness coming from the window that brought her back to her sciences closing the window. She jolted as she heard her mother calling for her. She headed towards the hallway bringing to the stairway. Descending the stairs, she stopped half way and leaned her arms on the side railing. She observed her mother down below that was watching his favorite soaps on TV. Whats up mom? Did you finish up with your room? Yes mom, I did. Your father says that he fixed the flat on your bike. As Jennifer was talking to her daughter, her eyes kept fixed on the television set so that she would not miss anything? On Saturday afternoons, there was nothing to make her miss the afternoon movie. And as usual Jessie would be over at Maxs tavern with a couple of friends drinking draft and watching the ball game on the little TV screen in the upper corner of the ceiling. Within the years, Jessie had lost a considerable of hair on the top of his head and the rest of it was now turning salt and pepper. After seven years working for his own account, in 1978 he was hired at the new housing manufactory and today decided to buy one of his own, but for a very reasonable price. After hearing what her mother had just said, her feelings automatically changed. Great! Replied Linda as she ran down the stairs and out the front door. As she approached the garage door, she noticed what a beautiful night it was. It was warm, and soon the sky would be filled with stars; perfect for a bicycle ride.

13

Glenn Gillis:The Field Chapter 3 A New Bike The Signe read SPORTS EXPERTS, which sold every kind of up to date sports article on the market. Charlie Beaudoin was trying to decide which bicycle to buy. He could have purchased one three weeks ago, but he thought that if he kept his weekly salaries, he would be better off buying a good eighteen speeder that just a ten speed. The colors varied. After half an hour, he finally made up his mind. There was no doubt about it; he picked the one that he had spotted a few weeks earlier. The color was of a bright red and yellow, soft rubber handles, a padded seat and a water gourd. Charlie left the store feeling very proud. This was not just any bike, oh no; it was a professional eighteen speeder, and he just could not wait to show it off to Normand. As he mounted his Bick, he headed up 7th street. It was no problem at all going uphill into small gear. He felt just like a cowboy riding the planes with a new purchased pure breed horse. If it werent for his summer job as a theater ticket holder, he probably would not be riding his bike this moment. He also knew that he had to save his money. He was going to graduate next year and go to college to learn a trade in computer science as a computer analyst. As he thinks back, he could still hear his father giving him advice: Computers son, thats where all the money is these days and the years to come. Why if I could start all over again, thats what Id be instead of riding my old rig from town to town Maybe it was good advice, but all Charlie could think of for the moment, was to try out his new bike. *** Normand Chass was lying down on the living room couch, his sneakers half untied watching TV a little uninterested. He thought that he should try to call Charlie on the phone one more time. He went to the phone and dialed his number once again. After three rings, there was still no answer. Wonder where the heck... He surely must have bought that bike by now? From where he sat, he could hear the close line pulley squeaking. He put down the phone receiver and headed towards the back door. Just as he was about to open the door, he came face to face with his mother. Helen gasped as she saw Normand appear at the door at the same time. Normand! his mother said as she held her breath. 14

Glenn Gillis:The Field I just hate it when you do that. Sorry mom. replied Charlie opening the door for his mother with a little laughter. Whats the hurry now? she said entering with a full basket of clean close. Here mom, I will carry that for you. By the way mom, did Charlie call earlier? Yes, as a mater of fact he did call... ...Well, what did he say, He said he would call you back later...Oh yes, he said something about a bicycle. Well then, Normand thought as he bit at his nails. That must mean that he bought the bike. What was that? Oh-, nothing, just talking to myself. Suddenly the phone rang. I will get it mom. Hello? Normand, its Charlie. Hey man, did you buy the bike? Yes I did, and shes a beauty. Ten speed? Nope, its an eighteen speeder. No kidding, an eighteen hunh. What do you say we meet later on? For some odd reason he sensed that he had to go to Dennison Boulevard, it seemed to be the best place. Sure Charlie, where? Dennison Boulevard. On Dennisons Hun-, why Dennison? Charlie had no specific reason to offer him and wondered why himself. I dont know-, just Dennison thats all. OK then, lets say we meet there at around 9:00pm. See you later. click Rrrrrrrrrrrrrr ***

Glenn Gillis:The Field Fifth street had an angle of 25 and the length of three blocks. At the top stood the towns water tank with (Golden Valley...POPULATION: 30.000) written in giant black letters. Although Linda had a good head start, she was beginning to slow down. She was starting to feel the pull in her legs and her breathing was heavier. Sweat was beginning to flow down her temples. The night was maybe just a bit warm, but she knew that once she would reach the top, there would surly be a gentle breeze. The STOP Signe was approximately another hundred feet ahead. With one last sprint, she gave everything that she had, and within no time at all she reached the top. Her back was wet with sweat. The sweat trickled down her armpits and between her breasts. Feeling uncomfortable, she had the urge to take off her T-Shirt and ride around only in her bra. The thought made her chuckle. There was a cool breeze playing through her long blond hair. She was happy it was Saturday, since she didnt work Saturdays. It wasnt that she did not like her job at the ice-cream stand; it was her horny old boss always looking at her as if she was made of ice cream. She knew that the old bugger would just love to get his hands on her and thats what she hated about the job. As she rode, she noticed a tennis court up ahead. The lights went on as she approached. A young couple was getting ready to play. Large willow and pin Cherrie trees filled the park that surrounded the tennis court. She gazed up at the bright high lampposts and as she did so, a faint memory consumed her. Memory flashes were coming and going of a heavy mist of fog and a strange humming sound. A language she could not understand. Then it left just as fast as it came. She noticed that her pedaling had increased. Her adrenaline was rising. As she came back to her senses, she realized she was on another street going downhill. Confused, she stopped, looked around wondering what had happened. Im on-, Im on Pins street, what am I doing on... There was no traffic and it was a good thing. She wanted to turn back and go home, but something kept her from doing it. It was odd, suddenly the idea was favorable. She followed her instinct and was on her way. *** After Charlie had finished talking with Normand on the phone, he was back on his bike. Fifteen minutes later, he reached the intersection of Lvis street and Forest Boulevard. He came to a stop and wondered which street he should take next? It wasnt Forest Street, Forest was much steeper, and anyway, he had to meet Normand on Dennison Boulevard, which

16

Glenn Gillis:The Field joined Forest Boulevard. As he glided downhill, he looked up and noticed that there wasnt a cloud to be seen; that is when he noticed it. Wow! Northern lights. Waves of green and purple light swiveled from side to side. Suddenly he had a good idea where he could enjoy looking at the phenomenon without them being distorted by the lights of the town. He looked at his watch. It was ten to nine. He remembered that he was supposed to meet Normand at nine. It was on the same way so they would both be looking at the northern lights he thought. *** Somehow, Linda was still trying to get her memory straight. Although there was no reason for her to go down Dennison Boulevard, that strange sensation kept pulling at her. There was no way she could counteract it. It felt as if she was being summoned. She began pedaling faster although her reflexes were minim. Lights were coming her way, getting stronger by the second. There was a loud horn. Lights past her about just a foot. "You crazy or something!" the car driver cried out as he passed him by. Linda jerked, and suddenly came back to her senses. She stopped, took a deep breath. Whats wrong with me, that car could have hit me. She got off her bike, and walked to the corner of Dennison Boulevard. She took another deep breath, and mounted her bicycle keeping her route. She felt a sudden headache in the back of her skull. "I'm not feeling well-not at all, she thought, but there were only two more blocks to reach the old ball field; she decided it would be a good idea to relax there. She was just about to mount her bicycle, when she heard a voice call her name. "LINDA! ...Hey Linda!" a voice shouted from behind. She recognized Charlie Beaudoin; she pleased her to see him. She placed the side of her hair, trying to look descent and attentive hoping he didn't see what just happened. "Hello Charlie, she smiled as he approached. "Hey Linda, where are you heading?" "Oh, I was just...just riding around, thats all. "Wow, fancy bike Charlie. "Han...oh yeah, nice isn't it". "I just bought it, ...trying it out." "Ah, where were you heading? asked Linda 17

Glenn Gillis:The Field "I was...well, look up there! Linda was fascinated to see such natural beauty. "I was going to have a better view of the lights up at the field, want to come along? It was so romantic of him; of course she couldn't refuse. "Sure, I...you know, thats exactly where I was going too." she replied smiling. Somehow, she felt she had to go there too. Was it for the lights, or because Charlie asked her to? - She wasn't sure. , but she was happy to see Charlie tonight; in fact, she had a little something for him, a very big crush was more like it. Just last year, Linda would never of thought of Charlie in such a manner. She really wasnt interested in boys that much then, but now... She wasn't the little blond freckled tomboy that lived around the corner anymore, but a very attractive light blond seventeen year old women. Charlie Beaudoin on the other hand was unaware of Linda's interest for him. He already had an eye for a new girl in his class by the name of Cindy Tramblay. Cindy was a pretty brunette, maybe a little shorter than Linda, with a very impressive pair of breasts that caught the eye of everyone at school. Charlie often imagined what it would be like to grab those big knockers. Oh yes, it surely had to be fun. The only problem was that Cindy had a boyfriend. Charlie always thought of Linda as being just a friend. Maybe it was that she never really approached him in the right way. The truth is that he never saw the slightest spark, but maybe tonight was her chance. There were other boys already tried dating her; for instance, Normand Chass. Normand Chass was what you could call the typical macho type. His five foot six inches, curly black hair, made his features very close to that of an Italian. Always trying to come on to every girl he met. Sometimes his charm would succeed. Once he even tried using his charm on Linda, but without luck. Linda applauded him for such a good try. Normand never took it as an insult; he sort of knew that it wouldn't work with Linda. They knew each other too long, but with Normand, if you don't try, you will never know. That stunt would have maybe worked if it had been someone else... With a little luck, Linda might light that spark in Charlie. One more block, and they would reach the field. *** Normand Chass got tired of waiting and riding up and down Dennison Boulevard. He decided he would wait for him by the old bleacher long side the old baseball field. If Charlie were coming, he would be sure to see him from there. He wished he too would have a new 18

Glenn Gillis:The Field bike just like Charlie. If he had a bike like Charlie's, he would invite Lisa Peltier to ride around with him, but not with this old thing, she would just... He suddenly turned his head over his shoulder looking towards the far end of the field. There was...he could have sworn he saw a blue light flashing? He turned his attention back towards the street. No Charlie! Then Lisa Peltier came back to mind. She was very pretty indeed, but no, not with this bike, she would only laugh at him, that's what she would do, but surly Charlie would be kind enough to... Again, something at the far end of the field attracted his attention. Something glimmered, like a faint blue light. "What the? "Someone camping? Nhaaaa. He mounted his bike and started pedaling towards the far end of the field. *** Charlie noticed that Linda had on a pair of tight shorts. Her legs were not thin, nor too fat. She had a nice tan. He took a quick gimps and noticed that her front features were very eye-catching. Yes-she was a woman now, and a very pretty one too. Linda could sense that Charlie was scanning her, and she enjoyed it. It made her feel proud. Linda suddenly stopped and looked at Charlie. Charlie also stopped and saw that Linda was looking at him, it made him feel uncomfortable. "What?" asked Charlie beginning to blush? "Are you still working at the theater?" Charlie wasn't sure he wanted to answer "Ah...yeah, I am, why do you ask?" "Because Lora said that she saw you there." "So its true then." "That bike must have cost a lot? "My bike...oh yeah, thats how I bought it." "Are you still working at the ice cream stand?" "Heinz ice cream, the best ice cream in town." Linda answered wavering her head. "Yeah, I guess I am, but if that old bugger of a Heinz tries to lay one of his hands on my butt, that's it." 19

Glenn Gillis:The Field Charlie couldn't help, but chuckle. "By the way, I don't see you round there very often!" "Yeah well, you will, you will." Once they reached the field, they started walking towards the center. A few seconds later, they were both Laing on their backs in the center of the field staring towards the sky. The Aurora Borealis kept changing from light green to purple, then pink and so and so. "Isn't it wonderful, said Charlie. A free light show." The smell of woodland around them allured their nostrils as it flowed through the soft breeze. As they lay there, only the sounds of frogs croaking and the busing or insects could be heard. "Isn't it just wonderful." said Linda "Yup, like I said." Charlie replied, his hands behind his head. Charlie suddenly felt Linda's head lay gently upon his arm. He then turned to face Linda that was smiling. Their hearts began to beat faster. Her worm touch and dark blue eyes aroused his need for more than just a smile. Their lips approached. They kissed passionately This time I won't let him slip away. The shyness had disappeared as their lips touched. They began to roll on their sides, but then Linda felt something hard and uncomfortable against her back. "Wait Charlie, there's something...I feel something...? She turned around and tried to distinguish what she was lying on. "A bicycle...? She said surprised. "Wait a minute, said Charlie, isn't that... He was sure he recognized Normand's bicycle. "Normand's bicycle!" "Are you sure? Linda asked. His eyes were now adjusted to the dark. He was sure of it; it was definitely Normand's bike. Then he remembered that he was supposed to meet him near here. They both got up and started looking into the darkness of the ball field. They shouted out his name, but there was no answer. Something dark was hovering above the field. "Charlie! Linda said worried. Whats that? Suddenly a hot surge of wind circled round them followed by a humming sound. A very bright beam of blue light came upon them. 20

Glenn Gillis:The Field "Charlie, whats happening here, I'm afraid. "Don't know." Charlie shouted his hand in front of his forehead trying to hide the light. A very large sphere was hovering above them. The sides of the sphere were of a bright red, and the center a bright blue. They were beginning to feel very strange. Things seemed to be moving in slow motion. "Lets go Charlie!" Charlie couldn't help, but look at the strange thing. "Where did that thing come from?" Charlie asked. He grabbed Linda's arm and tried to run as fast as he could, but somehow their escape was suddenly seized by something. They were trapped, they couldn't move. It was a stun that paralyzed them. Now they were very relaxed, like a floating sensation. The humming sound became louder. A fog distorted their vision. The temperature changed, it was almost cold now. They could hardly distinguish what looked like little shapes moving around them. Reality was mistaken for a dream; however, there seemed to be large black eyes examining them. There were Little creatures around them, moving. That sound; that humming sound, suddenly a far away memory hidden in the back of their minds had awakened. It was when they were young when they were little. NO! NO! Not again pleeeaase not againnnn, Linda thought. CHARLIE...please help me, but Charlie could not hear a single word, only stare motionless. LINDA ...COULD YOU HEAR ME! But Linda was like a statue staring at nothing. A flash of light leaves the ball field in just a few seconds. The Field was quiet and dark again. Only the soft sounds of buzzing insects and the chattering sounds of frogs in the distance could be heard.

Glenn Gillis:The Field Chapter: 4 Abduction Jessie Cardinal was sitting in his lazy-boy looking at the sports section of the (GAZETTE) newspaper. However; his mind wasn't straight, it was late and he knew it. The large coco clock indicated that it was a little past twelve. Jennifer tried ignoring the time, but it was no use, she had a strange feeling that something wasn't right. "Jessie, I think... Before she had the chance to finish talking, Jessie cut her speech. "Yes honey, I know." he said putting his paper down. "Now don't worry Jen. I'm sure that Linda is old enough to know what she's doing. Besides, she's probably at MacDonald's right now having fun with a couple of her friends. You know how time passes when youre having fun." "Oh I suppose your right." she replied as she looked out the front window. "For peat sakes Jen, will you come and sit down, youre making me nervous. Look...give her one half hour, if she's not home by then well..." Jennifer knew that Linda was seventeen going on eighteen. She was old enough to do things that girls her age do. There always was a first time to fall in love, and--Waite a minute, Linda doesnt even have a boyfriend, she doesnt take any alcohol. No no, I have to calm down; maybe she is with friends. Jennifer joined Jessie on the couch and tried to concentrate on TV. Although Jessie seemed to be in control, he had back thoughts. Linda dont make things any worse, and please come home. *** Alain Beaudoin was shifting into low gear as he parked the rig long side the sidewalk in front of his house. Descending the low step of the van, his attention went towards the house. He noticed that there were no lights on. He took a glimpse at his watch. It was 12:30 h. He found it strange, Charlie can't be sleeping, its too early and around this time he would be playing on the computer up in his room? Then he remembered Charlie saying something about buying his new bicycle today or rather yesterday, but even if there was a new bike involved, Charlie didn't have the habit of staying out that late. He walked up the front driveway, opened the side door of the house and entered the kitchen. He switched on the light and hung up his jacket in the closet. He then sat at the kitchen table and pulled off his cowboy boots. 22

Glenn Gillis:The Field "Charlie! You home?" there was no answer. Thats it then, he's still out biking with Normand, he thought He walked towards the fridge, opened it and took out a cold can of beer. He snapped it open, and went into the living room hopping by chance he could catch the last TV sports final about the ball game yesterday afternoon. (1:15 am) Hubert and Helen Chass were looking at the clock, which was just above the kitchen table. "What if something happened to them?" Honey if I were you I'd call the police." "Hold your horses Helen, lets- lets not lose our nerve now- over something you're not sure of." Then Hubert thought of Alain Beaudion. "What if he's over at Charlies?" "Shouldn't he of at least called!" "Well, I guess your right Helen, I will call Alain, he must be home by now." *** The scenery was odd. The sky was clear and it was cold. She looked around only to see snow everywhere. A mountain, yes...she was on a mountain peak. She felt something, something holding on to her hand. She turned around and noticed Charlie's face. He was in panic because the only thing keeping him from falling off the cleft was the grip of her hand. HELP ME LINDA, he kept shouting. It was so cold. She couldn't believe this was happening. MY GOD CHARLIE HOLD ON PLEASE. She tried her best, but her grip let go and Charlie fell, fell downwards deeper and deeper. NOOoooooooooooo Linda woke up still shouting from the broken nightmare. Her heart was beating faster and she was breathing heavily. She looked around and was confused. The room in which she was in was abnormal. Was this another dream? She was pulling on the strap like materials that tied her hands down. She now noticed that she was stripped naked lying on her back on an odd table. It resembled a metal table except it was not cold to the touch. In the background, she could see the walls of the ...room? 23

Glenn Gillis:The Field They were grayish, nebulous, almost transparent plastic like walls. Someone or something was moving on the other side. There were tubes and wires coming from everywhere. Some debris like objects was floating in the background, but how can that be, she wondered? Suddenly not too far from her she recognized Normand, then Charlie. They too were strapped down naked on tables. Their clothes were...also were floating around close by. No gravity...what is this place? "Hey Charlie, Normand-wake up, WAKE UP! "HAY-YOU GUYS...WAKE UP! Charlie's eyes opened, but he was still feeling very drowsy. "Whats up wha...? He turned his head to face Linda. She was lying there completely naked. She was so very beautiful. He could see the lump of her pubic hair and those beautiful breasts. They were a lot bigger than he imagined and...and she was strapped down. Why? "Linda...why are you...? She was crying, in shock. "Charlie, what are we (sob) doing here?(sob) He was slowly coming back to his senses. He began looking around. "Where are we...where...? Normand heard their conversation, looked at them, and suddenly began laughing. "What do you find so funny, creep!" said Charlie frustrated. "Why are we all naked (chuckle) never tried this game before? "Normand will you wake up, come on, step out of it!" Charlie looked around, and then it was coming back. "Now I remember." He looked at Linda. "We were at the baseball field looking at the northern light, and... "Yes I remember too." Linda replied. "I was waiting for you Charlie, Normand said. I decided to wait for you beside the old bleachers when I saw the light." There was a brisk movement coming from behind them. Children, no not children. They were around them, examining them. Then they remembered. It was long ago, in this very same room. "No not again, Linda cried out, please not again." The odd instruments above them were beginning to descend like an octopus after its prey.

24

Glenn Gillis:The Field They moved swiftly and unnoticed. The humans were only a different living species, which they had to restrain and control. High-pitch grunts could be heard. Long tentacle like fingers brutally moved Linda's head to one side. One after the other their screams were suddenly interrupted by a small stun, and then everything seemed inert and deserving. An instrument was attached to their heads from which another was inserted in the back of their necks to replace the tiny object, which was there too long. The old summoning device had to be recycled. They had to be quick not to alert the adult species. Soon they would be back on the planet. *** Before Hubert Chass could dial the phone, it began to ring. "Answer it Hubert." Helen said nervously. "That could be Normand." "Hello Hubert, this is Alain, sorry to wake you at this hour, but would Charlie be at your place by chance?" "Why no, he isn't, I was just about to call your place to find out if Norman was there." "No, he's not here Alain." "Why thats strange? said Alain. Jessie just phoned me, he said that Linda isn't home either." "Hubert? "Yes...I, I..." Hubert couldnt think straight, what was going on, why the three of them?" "I don't know about you Hubert, but I think we should call the police." OK then Alain, we'll keep in touch if anything new turns up." then Hubert hung up the phone. "Whats wrong Hubert? Helen asked worried. "Normand isn't the only one missing, Linda Cardinal and Normand are not home either." "Call the police, now! "Thats what Alain is doing right this minute." *** By the time the big hand hit five past three the next morning, all three parents were in the new part of town at the Cardinal's waiting for the phone to ring any minute. The newly 25

Glenn Gillis:The Field constructed home still had a slight odor of wood and paint. The patio screen door was left open to let in the fresh air. Rectangular decorative designed mirrors were stuck to the wall above the fireplace. Alain Beaudoin was leaning against the fireplace drinking his third cup of coffee. Hubert was sitting on one side of the living room couch, while Helen sat just beside him on the arm of it. Jessie and Jennifer Cardinal were sitting at the kitchen table drinking coffee as well. Alain was trying desperately to recall the last conversation he had with Charlie. The only thing that came to mind was the new bicycle. Although things seemed normal between Charlie and his father, Alain was having selfreproaches. There was a scar in their life. It's healed now; at least thats what Alain hopes. After Alain had divorced with his wife Elizabeth seven years earlier, Charlie never sort of got over it, nor has he forgiven his parents either. He still hasn't accepted the fact that his mother could just leave for some stupid reason. The fact that neither of his parents were not talking to each other, not even just as good friends, that; Charlie couldn't accept. Alain knows that his son suffered plenty, and maybe is he still. One day, maybe soon, Charlie will know the real story, for Alain has all the answers. When Alain first met Elizabeth, it was at a baseball game of course. Alain was a pitcher for the team. Elizabeth was very fussy in her ways; extravagant you could say. She really didn't have an interest for the game, nor any other game for that fact. If it was for going out on a date, it was just like the close she bought, she had to be sure that the boy fits her standards. Except for that one time, nature had betrayed her and meeting Alain was love at first sight. Coming from a very wealthy family, her parents would have preferred their daughter marry a doctor just like her father was, or someone that would qualify up to their expectations. Her parents always tried to convince her in marring Steve Marleau who was finishing his doctoral just before Elizabeth met Alain. Elizabeths parents and the Marleaus were old friends and also good neighbors. Alain on the other hand was only assistant manager for ABITIBI TRANSPORTS. His salary was far from that of a doctor, but Elizabeth loved Alain, at least that was what she thought. Until the age of five, Charlie was just fine, but after the incident of the disappearance in the baseball field, everything went downhill. A few weeks afterwards, Charlie began acting strange. His compartment was changing. He started having trouble concentrating in school. Sometimes Charlie would just completely lose track with the rest of the world. Often, he would seem to be in some kind of trance. He 26

Glenn Gillis:The Field often complained of having headaches, they had him see a doctor, but nothing showed up after the diagnosis so the doctor suggested he see a psychiatrist...thats when all hell broke loose. Elizabeth couldn't accept that at all. What would her parents think? They kept it a secret A year had past. Alain was having a crisis. The transport company that he worked for was losing ground by a new competitor: ALIANCE TRANSPORT. Finally they had no other choice, but to sell. Alain was out of a job. Later he was hired as a simple truck driver for the new company. Elizabeth just couldn't accept that fact that Alain was degraded as simple trucker and that her son was now seeing a psychiatrist, it was just too much. A separation was evident. Today Charlie is a perfectly normal kid. His grades are very encouraging and both Alain and his father get along just fine...at least thats what he hops. "Anyone for a fresh cup of coffee?" Jennifer asks as she comes out of the kitchen with the coffee pot in her hand. Helen looks up at Jennifer wondering if another cup will just make her nerves worse than they already are. "No thank you Jennifer." "Yes, I think I will have another, Alan demands. Alain approaches the living room window, takes another drink of coffee and gently moves the curtains about six inches. The street is brightly lit. Moths and different flying insects attracted by the lamppost fly dizzily in circles. No one passes by. Dam it son, where the hell are you? "We'd think we were in some big city or somewhere." Hubert suddenly wails. "How long is it going to take them to find our kids?" Before Hubert could say another word, Alain interrupted him trying to calm him down. "Hubert, Hubert calm down now, were all in the same situation, so lets not panic now and just; just try to keep our calm OK. I'm sure the police are doing the best they can." Helen returned to the kitchen thinking about what Hubert had just said. Jessie was walking into the kitchen floor. Jennifer could see the sadness in his eyes. "Honey stop worrying, it isn't helping me." "Oh...I know Jennifer." replies Jessie as he puts his arms around her. " They'll find her Jen, don't you worry." Helen was going through one of Jennifers magazines without really being conscious of what she was seeing. The only thing she could think about was Normand. She was trying desperately to remember the conversation that Normand had with Charlie on the phone yesterday afternoon. Thats when it suddenly struck her. "Waite a minute!" Helen said as she stood up. 27

Glenn Gillis:The Field "I'm pretty sure I heard Normand say something about...meeting Charlie--yes, it was on Dennison Boulevard, he said he would meet him there."

Glenn Gillis:The Field Chapter: 5 The Unsolved Case Constable Mark Mnard was on the phone talking with a police officer from Montreal concerning the auto-portrait of a wanted suspect related to two different corner store holdups. "OK you say that he might be around here...we will receive an auto portrait this week...ah Hun...OK we will be distributing them as soon as they get in... OK Thank you, Goodnight." Mark Mnard was one of the oldest police officers at the station besides Frank Bruno. Then there was the youngest Paul Rose. Mark had a couple of months left until his retirement, which he wasnt looking forward to. His wife Martha on the contrary, was looking forward to that day. She was making plans for both of them to travel with some of their savings plan that Mark had put aside. She encouraged her husband telling him that after thirty years it would do them good to relax a bit and maybe travel to the Bahamas. They didnt have to worry about the children; they were all grown up and had their own families now. Mark wouldn't disagree with his wifes idea, but after all those years as a police officer, it would be difficult. The authority always made him feel good, all the arrests and investigations would be something of the past. What would he do? Paul Rose was doing his fifth year with the department and Frank Bruno was going on his seventeenth. They both enjoyed teasing Mark about his retirement, but also encouraged the motive telling him that they too were looking forward to their retirement, but deep down inside they were just as worried. Mark was just about to go to the coffee machine when the phone rang. "Municipal police department, can I help you? "This is Mrs. Cardinal speaking." Mark recognized Mrs. Cardinal's voice and suddenly remembered that he still hadn't had any call in. He wondered why no one had found the missing children yet. "Yes Mrs. Cardinal...I...it certainly would help...I'm all ears." Mark replied picking up a pencil and paper. "...You say Dennison boulevard...OK I will send out a call immediately and I will call you back as soon as we have something." As soon as Mark put down the phone, he sent out a call indicating where the teens could maybe be found. He then headed towards the next office where Paul Rose was filling in reports. Frank Bruno was off for the night. 29

Glenn Gillis:The Field "Paul, Mrs. Cardinal called again." "Theyre still not home?" "Nope. Listen I want you to check it out, there's something fishy going on." "Sure thing sergeant, but what makes you so suspicious?" With all the years of every kind of investigation, there was only really one that hasn't been solved yet, and that goes back thirteen years back. The strangest thing about the case is that it involves the same kids. Mark sits on the corner of Paul's desk. There was a large window separating both Mark and Paul's office. From where he sat, he could see the file drawers in his office. He took a sip of coffee then rubbed away the itch from his chin as he was thinking. "Well what makes you so suspicious Mark?" "I don't know, I just have a bad feeling." "Well, whatever you say Mark." Paul replies as he puts on his cap. Paul gets up from his desk, puts on his coat uniform and just as soon is out the door.

30

Glenn Gillis:The Field Chapter: 6 Waking Up The flashing colors of the patrol cars suddenly interrupted the darkness of the night. The cars slowly moved up the Boulevard lighting the ground with their flashlights untie the reached the field. Alice Prince was assisting Paul Rose in the next patrol car. Alice was new at the station. She enjoyed her new job as a police officer. She always wanted to be a police. Earlier, after years of competition, she finally received a martial arts instructor diploma, and finely made it with the police force. Suddenly Paul's voice came on the intercom. "Alice, see anything?" "No, not yet, maybe they... Before she could finish her sentence, Paul interrupted her. "Over there." Paul said pointing his beam towards an object. Alice pointed her beam upon the same object as Paul was. "OK, Alice replied, I can see it." A small lump of something was lying at the far end of the field. *** Mark Mnard sat down at his desk. He was thinking about Mrs. Cardinal's phone call. Just beside his desk where the file drawers, which contained all the investigations going back to the year 1969. He opened the bottom drawer, and found what he was looking for. (Unsolved) was stamped on the front cover (Presumption of abduction) May 1964-June 1968 Eight years later the search continues. The same three kids for the same strange reasons. His intuition tells him that the three kids will eventually appear at the same spot they disappeared. Why was it the old baseball field he wondered? Suddenly he jerked as he heard a screechy voice coming from the radio intercom. "Number four calling in answer." Mark puts the files back on the desk and went to answer the call. "Mark here." "Mark we just found three bicycles lying on the ground up here at the old ball field." 31

Glenn Gillis:The Field Again...the darn field, what is it about that field? "Yes Paul, bring the bicycles in, I will phone Mrs. C to come down and see if one of them belongs to her daughter. "OK serge (over)." Mark opened the file drawers and put them away, although he had a hunch he'd be taking them back out soon. *** The large grandfather clock above the fireplace indicated that it was 3:30 am. Helen got tired of reading magazines, nothing seemed to interest her. She kept fondling nervously with her hands. She also was tired of seeing Jessie walking the kitchen floor. She stood by the phone, waiting. Alain just couldn't sit still and decided that he had about just enough. "Well I don't know about you people, but I'm going to pay a visit at the police station to see if anyone is working down there!" Just as he was about to go out the door, the phone rang. "Hello, Jenefer said the phone already stuck to her ear. "Hello, Mrs. cardinal, this is sergeant Bernard...we just found three bicycles lying on the ground up by the old ball field. Jennifer felt stunned just hearing those words. "Do you think some of you could come down to the station to identify them to see it they belong to the kids?" "Yes...yes, we'll be right over sergeant." It was easy to see the troubling expression on Jennifers face as she put the receiver down. "Well? Jessie asked, what did he say?" "The sergeant said that three bicycles have been found lying on the ground at the old baseball field. Alain couldn't believe what he just heard. "My God, I just hope they don't belong to them." Alain replied Up until this day, all three families kept the secret, but unfortunately, it was dissolved. Yes, the thing that taunted them most in their lives was suddenly coming back to haunt them again. It wasn't only Alain that had these problems before; the Cardinals had their share of the darkness as well. 32

Glenn Gillis:The Field Four years earlier, in the summer of 1983, after enjoying a pleasant day at the beach with their daughter, the Cardinals decided to have a barbecue in their back yard. Jessie decided to have a couple of friends come over and have supper with them. Linda was excited and suggested they buy chips and pop. Jessie on the other hand was thinking of cold bear he had bought earlier that day. Linda's idea wasn't bad so he also asked his daughter to bring dessert to. After giving her the money, she mounted her bike and was on her way only to come back six hours later. The police that said they found her walking in circles in the baseball field, accompanied her home. They tried to question her, but she seemed as if she was drunk. She couldn't provide them with any logical reason. The only thing she kept saying was: the lights are too bright, big eyes, the eyes, big black eyes. Unfortunately, there was someone else that knew of these strange occurrences. The Chasses new too much about these events; whatever they were, because that same night their son Normand was missing also. He had come home very early the next morning wondering where he had come from. He had no explanation to give. It was a mysterious shroud. The field, the damned field had something odd about it. As the years would pass they had learned to forget, and life went back to its normal course...untie today. *** The blinding lights had disappeared leaving the three of them laying flat on their backs in the center of the field. Water sprinkled their faces making them gain consciousness. The sky above was a sad gray and it was raining. Their clothing was wet. Slowly they sat, and then they got up on their feet. Not a word was said. They began to leave each in different directions. A few minutes later, Linda was coming out of it. She found herself walking, staring at the sidewalk. The close she had on stuck to her skin. She looked up and noticed that it was raining. Her T-shirt wasn't put on right. She put her arm through her right sleeve, the other one was OK. Her sneakers were untied and the top, button of her jeans wasnt snapped. She stopped walking and dressed herself properly. She started examining the surroundings and noticed the old log cabins. She was up in the southern part of town. "Wha...what am I...?" She wondered what time it could have been...where was her bike. Panic overcame her and she began to cry. She was wet and cold. She needed comfort, someone to explain what had happened. *** 33

Glenn Gillis:The Field Charlie realized that he was walking down Ninth Street. Normand wasn't too far behind. "CHARIEEE! a voice called from behind. Charlie looked over his shoulder to see that it was Normand's voice. Normand's face was almost white and his expression was adrift. Although Charlie himself was very disoriented, he was concerned for Normand. "Normand! Are you alright?" Charlie asked lightly shaking Normand's shoulder. "Yeah I guess, but...whats going on, what happened?" Charlie would have liked to answer, but as hard as he tried, he couldn't find an answer. Suddenly he felt very sick. An unpleasant sensation coming from his abdomen went to his head and made him disgorge a mucky gray substance. He was sweating. He wiped his mouth with his hand. He felt a lot better and got back up. Normand was gone. It didn't matter, he would contact him later. All that mattered now was to go home... but what would he say to his father? He looked at his watch. It indicated 10:15am, but that was impossible. He shook his watch and put it to his ear, it was ticking. His thoughts were traveling, wondering, trying to remember, but only to come against a wall. Later he thought, for now I have to get home. Later that afternoon many questions were asked by the police and by their parents. The only one that had vague flashes was Normand. Flashes of a strange lit room and the humming sound was impossible to explain. As the weeks and months would pass, again the memories of the past would have to be put aside so that they could try to live a normal life again. , but every once in a while their parents would try would ask, but wouldn't persist if the teenager would get upset. After a year had past everything was forgiven and forgotten, but there was one person that didn't forget and needed answers. Sergeant Mark Mnard kept studying the unsolved files every once in a while. There were no traces of aggression found, but slight scratches behind each neck. This time Mark kept the files open. He went up to study the field once a week just in case he would find something that could give him a lead. Next year Linda and Charlie would graduate except for Normand Chass that had seemed to have lost interest.

Glenn Gillis:The Field Chapter: 7 The Accident Wednesday-August 25 (1992) The ambulance siren could be heard from quite a distance throughout the city. The ambulance was carrying two people involved in a collision in an intersection on highway twenty leading to the city of Montreal. The other vehicle involved was a cement truck. The right hand side of the truck had a big dent, but the driver got out without a scratch. Unfortunately, for the little dodge colt that tried to pass in front of the cement truck so that it could reach the right hand intersection, didn't have enough speed. It was hit from behind, colliding into an overpass wall. The passengers are in critical condition. Despite the heavy traffic, the ambulance was quick enough to make it in time. Arriving at the hospital, the doctors and nurses were all ready to intervene. One of the assistant nurses to help as the patents were carried on stretchers to the operating room was Linda Cardinal. One of the patients, a young girl of about ten years of age had blood on her head and face. The second patient was in her teens, maybe sixteen or seventeen at the most. She was still conscious and moaning, calming to have pain in her side. The middle-aged man was still breathing, but not regularity. Dr, Simons automatically diagnosed multiple fractures to the rib cage, left and right arm as well. The second Doctor, Dr. Robison estimated that the teenager might have injuries to the head, a fractured rib or two, and injuries to her hand and wrist. The youngest was very agitated and was trying to say something. As the nurses began to undress her, Linda was there to try and calm her. Linda knew that she would be receiving an anesthetic by injection any minute, which would put her to sleep, but for the moment, the young girl was trying to speak. Linda approached her ear to the young girl's mouth so that she could try to understand what she wanted so desperately to say. "Ma...my father... father, his pills...hh...heart...bad." "Don't worry, Linda replied trying to reassure her, he will be alright." Linda felt bad for her, knowing that her father was in critical condition. She informed Dr. Simons of the information that the young girl had given her. After the patients had been put to sleep, Linda left the operating room with the identification papers that she needed to inform the family. Two hours later, the girls were moved into a room on the second floor. Unfortunately, their father had died of cardiac arrest due to his multiple fractures. After the operation, Linda had met Dr. Simons who had operated on the girl's father.

35

Glenn Gillis:The Field "Linda, you said that you heard the girl's father tell you that her father had heart trouble." "Yes Doctor, thats what she told me." "Poor kid." he replied as he took off his rubber gloves. He didn't make it. Has anyone notified the family?" "Yes Linda replied, they arrived an hour ago, there in the waiting room." He threw his gloves in the trash can and headed towards the waiting room. After everyone had left the operating room, it was Lindas job to clean up. Some days were difficult like today, but she loved her job and couldn't wait to be a real nurse. Her term as assistant nurse was reaching its end. She had all the qualifications necessary to be a full-time nurse now. Only three months left before she would be wearing the white uniform. After cleaning up, she was about to leave when suddenly she felt a sensation of dj-vu. The operating table and the strong light above. A sudden chill came over her. A picture of another place flashed through her mind. The room suddenly changed, she was in another room, a strange place, and suddenly the actual room reappeared. Whats happening here, she thought. The flashes of the strange room resembled this one in some ways except the instruments that were very odd and the walls were not flat, but oval. The flashes left as they came. It was quiet, very quiet. She noticed that she was sweating. Her hands were moist. It must be the fatigue, she thought as she started walking towards the door. Once she was in the hallway, she looked at her watch, which indicated that it was (4:45pm). In just a few minutes, her shift would end and she would be on her way home. *** Sitting in the back of the wheel of her Ford Escort, Linda drove up Hudson Street, and then made a right turn on St. Catherine's street. From there, she would head one mile north towards the locality of Outremont. The city traffic was always miserable on the way back home from work. Door to door, bumper to bumper. Traffic was slow. She began to think about the strange flashes earlier that made her start biting at her nails. Could it have been a movie she had seen...? Maybe. It left her mind as she now thought what she would prepare for supper. She wasn't very fond of the big city. It was stuffy, noisy and too crowded, but this was where she worked and it is true that everything is available here. She did promise herself she would spend her next vacations with her parents and that would be Christmas. 36

Glenn Gillis:The Field It was amazing to see how some people could ride their bicycles through this heavy traffic. It was so dangerous and surely one of these days one of them will end up entering the emergency entrance. As she looked in the back view mirror, she noticed that a young man was approaching on his bike. He passed her by and crisscrossed two lanes then kept going. Somehow, she thought she recognized that person. That face...? Suddenly the slow traffic started to accelerate. It was hot and sticky. What I need is a good hot bath...and? A smile appeared on her face as she thought of the young hansom man on his bike. The ford escort followed traffic until it would eventually reach the intersection leading to Outremont.

Glenn Gillis:The Field Chapter: 8 Mountain Bikes Saturday August 28 If the weather were nice on Saturday mornings, Mont Royal would be crowded with joggers and trail bike fanatics. The trails were steep and rugged to climb, but it was the ultimate test for back and leg muscles. The uphill was very difficult, but downhill is when skill had to be used. John Perry was a skilled trail bike climber and almost after three years of practice, he never missed a weekend on the trails. The sun glimmered throughout the leaves and trees as he drove his bike. Among the constantly chanting birds gossiping away, a mockingbird could be heard every once in a while. John was very good at climbing and descending the trails, he was sure he could even enter a professional team. , but sometimes too much confidence can play nasty tricks. After half an hour of going uphill, it was now downhill all the way. It was more relaxing, but it took skill. Carefully holding onto his brakes, he let him self-roll down the hill. He noticed that behind him were others slowly catching up, but if they got too close he would let go of his brakes. The curves were very steep around these parts of the mountain. Knowing the path by heart, he knew that about fifty feet up ahead the trail would be fairly horizontal. He stood up on his paddles arching his back and head forwards. The trails were so worn down from the constant passing bikes, that the roots of the trees were almost Omni present. Suddenly his bike was vibrating from the roots. Others were approaching; he knew he had to go faster. The vibration stopped. He lifted his head looking up ahead and could see the horizontal part of the path. His front tire struck a low cut stump and John went flying five feet landing in the bushes to the left hand side. He rolled into a large tree, which stopped him. His head hurt from hitting the tree. He had a few scratches and bruises, but thought he was all right until he tried to get up. He felt a sharp pain in his lower left leg and foot. One of the bikers that was just behind, stopped to see if he was all right. "Hey man, hey, are you alright?" "N...no I...I think I broke something." "Don't move, I will be right with you in a Sec." The man was wearing tight stretchy green and yellow bicycle shorts. He had slightly long light brown hair. John was lying on his side when the young man reached him. A little out of breath, the man said: "Hay...that was some leap you gave back there." 38

Glenn Gillis:The Field "Yeah, I know, I shouldn't have distracted my attention by looking up ahead." "Well, if it will help, youre not the only one that had that similar accident here, many others did too...including myself. Here...put your arm around my neck and hold on, I will help you go down the path." "Yes , but what about our bikes, how will...jeez that hurts! "Take it easy... "John, my...my name is John." "Right John, don't try to put any weight on your foot." "I tied my bike to a tree, I will tie yours with mine and come back for them later. John was surprised by the young man's hospitality. "Thank you by way ah...?" "Charlie. the young man replied. "Thanks Charlie, I will owe you one." Luckily, the parking lot wasn't too far. Charlie deposited John in his Honda Civic, and then went back for the bicycles. A few moments later Charlie was back with the bikes. He put the two bikes in each car. "John, do you think you could use your right foot to drive?" "Yeah, my right foot is OK I guess. "Just follow me to the closest hospital, I will help you when we get there OK." "Got it." John replied Once they reached the emergency, Charlie helped John into a wheelchair. Charlie tried asking for help, but everyone seemed so busy. John was impatient, he couldn't wait with the rest of the patients in the waiting room, this was too urgent. They found a nurse, but she was busy assisting a patient. "How does a person get help around here anyway? John asked. There was a nurse coming out of a room, but she was heading the opposite direction. Charlie waved his hand. "Ah...nurse...nurse, can you help us please?" The young nurse stopped and turned around. As she walked toward them, she noticed the man in a wheelchair. "Yes sir, can I..." She recognized the face. She was just as surprised as he. Charlie couldn't believe it. Was it really Linda? She looked so pretty in her white uniform. Her smile was just as captivating as ever. "Cha...Charlie, Charlie Beaudoin...what on earth..." "Linda...?" 39

Glenn Gillis:The Field They both rushed into each others arms. "Why...Linda, I'm so happy to see you again. Youre; he stood back and looked at her. Youre . . . a nurse! "Why, yes I am...well, almost." "Sorry to interrupt you two, but..." "Oh, I'm so sorry sir, its just that...well, follow me, (chuckles)" As they walked the corridor, both Charlie and Linda had a lot to say. "How long have you..." Charlie asked "Well...its been two years that I finished the course, and now I'm finishing my term as assistant nurse." "Here sir, wait in here, I will notify the doctor, he will be with you soon." "Thank you nurse, and thanks a lot Charlie, man I owe you." John shook Charlie's hand before he left and thanked him again. As Linda and Charlie walked down the hallway together, Linda asked Ah, where did you . . .? pointing towards John room. Oh John, yeah well you see, there are these trails Linda was interested in Charlies story. After he finished explaining where he worked and how hed met John, he proposed that they have supper together sometime. Why not tonight? said Linda. Charlie was surprised by the sudden proposal. Tonight, great! What time? They made arrangements and both agreed on (6:30) pm at a well-known restaurant. As Charlie said goodbye and was on his way, Linda noticed the very tight stretchy shorts that Charlie was wearing which reveled a well-formed pair of, buttocks and muscular thighs. She started walking towards the emergency front desk as a smile appeared on her face. God, what a hunk. She thought *** The heavy rain was tapping on the side of the large window obstructing the outside view. He knew he was a little early, but better early than late. He also felt a little tense, but that was normal after all these years. Are you ready to order Sir? He jolted as the waitress caught him off guard. Ah no I, I will just have a coffee for now thank you.

40

Glenn Gillis:The Field The rain persisted and he was beginning to wonder if maybe she had changed her mind. A sudden smile appeared on his face, she hasnt changed a bit, well maybe. , but then there were also other memories of his old friend Normand. The expression was changing to concern. There was something strange he couldnt pinpoint. Although they were the best of friends, that friendship had dissolved. Just before he left Golden Valley to go to college, Normand's compartment was changing. Whether he phoned him or went to his house to talk to him, his parents would always say that he didnt have the time or wasnt really feeling good that day. It was a complete mystery. He suddenly felt someone beside his table. Charlie. Linda was looking just splendid. Her smile was so friendly. Linda, hi. He was awestruck to the refreshing smell of perfume. She wore a black low cut blouse which revealed a little of her firm breasts. Tight blue jeans, her light straight blond hair hung over her shoulders. Linda you look stunning. Why thank you Charlie. Sorry if Im late, but just look at that rain, isnt if awful. Right, it took my almost half an hour just to find a parking. That my friend is the city life. So Charlie, what shall we have? said Linda rubbing her hands with anticipation. As they waited for the pizza to arrive, Charlie had so many questions to ask. So, how long have you been a nurse and how long have you wanted to become one? She chuckled the way Charlie asked his questions. OK, its been exactly two years and two weeks altogether, its hard work, you always have to be alert, the shifts can be outrageous, but I love it. Hun, look at that. Linda exclaimed looking out the window. It stopped raining. Suddenly she noticed something familiar in the street. A young man passing through traffic with his bike, then she remembered. Wait a minute, now I remember, it was you the other day? Me? What do you mean? She explained that she thought she had recognized him in traffic on his bike. Could be, I always go to work with my bike, I find it faster than my car. Well I wont disagree, that slow traffic after work drives us all crazy. , but Charlie please be careful. Dont worry, Im always careful. 41

Glenn Gillis:The Field Their pizza was ready and they helped themselves without timidity. So. Youre in the computer business now? Aunhun. Charlie replied swallowing his last bite and wiping his mouth with a napkin. He went on explaining what his job consisted of and the name of the company he worked for. Hum, sounds like fun. Linda replied. Well, not that interesting. Charlie replied with a grin. The thought he had had earlier, was bothering him, he just had to ask Linda about it. Linda when was the last time youve heard from Normand? Linda stared at Charlie for a moment before saying anything. Normand, Normand Chass? Yes. Let me see, mother wrote me a couple of times and Charlie noticed that the expression on her face was changing. It made him feel uncomfortable. She said that something had happened to him; Charlie, Normands in a mental institution. A mental institution, what happened to him? I dont know, all mother said was that he had some kind of depression. Thats strange. Charlie replied looking out the window at the street traffic. Well enough of this sadness, look, Ive got a great idea Linda, why dont we go see a movie? A movie. Linda replied with a big smile. It amazed her to see how his ways havent changed, always ready for something new. She loved everything about him; you could say the perfect match. Well, why not. She replied excited. The sun slowly gave way as darkness overlapped the big city. Every kind of light sign brightened saint Catharine Street. Tourists invaded the streets, restaurants, cafs and boutiques everywhere. The odor of every kind of food allured their nostrils. There were many choices of movie theaters to choose from, but they finally agreed for one with an interesting film to see. Two hours later, they were both having coffee at a caf shop on St- Denis Street. The atmosphere was pleasant, low chatter could be heard around them. Charlie was thinking of what to do next as he did not want the evening to end. Linda was so attractive and interesting to be with. Thoughts were going through his mind, she surely had to be single because she wouldnt be alone with him tonight. He also wanted to visit her apartment, her room. He wanted to know everything about her, her pastimes, who her friends were. Yes; it

42

Glenn Gillis:The Field was obvious now, Charlie was in love. He was dying to kiss her soft lips, to hold her in his arms. Linda could sense that Charlie was thinking of her, what could he be thinking of, she wondered. He was so handsome with his slightly long hair combed back and light brown Swede sports jacket that matched with his tight blue jeans. Should she ask him over to her apartment? She imagined Charlie in bed with her and it excited her. She remembered when they were both young, the first time Charlie kissed her, however; she could not remember where it was, but she was sure of it. Later they both arrived at Lindas parking lot just beside the block apartment. They ended the night with a passionate kiss. She was so beautiful; he never wanted this moment to end. Goodnight Linda, he said with another kiss. See you tomorrow Charlie, she replied with a pretty smile. Once he reached the highway intersection, the traffic was much quieter than during the day. He couldnt wait to see her again, to hold her in his arms tight, to make passionate love to her. Then he thought about what Linda had told him about Normand being in a mental institute. What could have happened? He would have to know and the only way would be to go back to his hometown in Golden Valley.

43

Glenn Gillis:The Field Chapter 9 A Bright Star (Four years earlier) Although he thought he would enjoy his retirement , and that he would relax by going fishing with his wife and friends; but no, it was oppressive. Paul Rose and Frank Bruno would go over to visit every so often. They would play cards and talk just about everything, but their job. Mark would act as if he enjoyed himself, but that illusion didnt work on his long time bodies. They knew Mark much too long and could sense the loneliness he tried to hide. Once he asked Paul how Alice was doing and if there was anything new. Paul knew that Mark was referring to the case of the missing children. His retirement was driving him crazy. No one was surprised, to see Mark come back on the job, not even his wife. Paul, Frank and Alice knew that there was something bothering him and that thing was the mystery of the field disappearances. Although a year had past, Mark still couldnt understand what had happened to those three kids on the night of their disappearance. A few weeks after the event, everything was forgotten and the kids as well as their parents went on with their lives as if nothing had ever happened, or as if they didnt want to remember. Mark did go up to search the field, but there was nothing there except when he searched the back woods and bushes. He discovered what looked like to him as if the bushes were crushed by something very heavy in a circular form. He thought a drilling company could have made it or a loader could have deposited snow there last winter. What really ignited his curiosity was that a rumor went around that someone had seen a strange dim blue light coming from the bushes at the far end of the field the night the kids had disappeared. That was exactly where he found the circular form. So every once in a while Mark would drive up long side the field at dawn and waited. There had to be a simple reason for those lights, maybe some nut with an oil lamp trying to scare someone or abduct him or her by putting them asleep with a cloth filled with chloroform so that he could rape them after. At least that was his hypothesis. One night he parked his car long side the field and waited and waited until he was starting to fall asleep when something caught his attention. He wasnt sure, but he thought he saw a star move. He blinked his eyes and looked again. The star was still there, but not moving. I think I should go home to bed, thats what I should do. He was about to look at the field when he noticed the star jerk away bringing along with it a short tail of orange fire then it disappeared. He kept staring at the sky until suddenly the tail appeared again for only a second or two landed with the speed of a shooting star at the far end of the field. He was stunned. He didnt know what to make of it. A dim flashing blue light 44

Glenn Gillis:The Field was coming from the woods. He quietly got out of the car, but then looked around to see if there was anyone around that might have seen what he just saw. There wasnt a soul in sight. What the hell was that? He wondered He shut the car door, unfastened his gun case and proceeded to walk towards the far end of the field. Closer and closer, he approached until he was half way there. He stopped and noticed that the dim light was not flashing, but rotating and sort of fading and getting brighter as if the light itself was breathing. As he approached, a sudden light lit up on the side of the circular object. My God, is this what I think it is? he thought to himself. His heart was beating faster and faster. The large ball shaped object was changing its form. The closer it got, the more its shape began to flatten. As all this was happening, the large object kept rotating, and Paul noticed that there were some sort of air vents moving to the sides of the now flattened object. The low humming sound seemed to be coming from the speed of the rotating object. As all this was happening in front of his eyes, two beams of light coming from the object appeared in the bushes about fifteen feet from the circular object. Suddenly Mark though he saw movement in the bushes. He pointed his gun toward the movement in the bushes. His heart felt as if it was to explode. Hey WHOS OUT THERE Come, COME OUT SO I CAN SEE YOU! He noticed two little creatures with large black eyes staring at him. Mark was horrified. Something stunned him and he felt it go all through his body, like an electric charge. There was ringing in his ears. There were small creatures around him the size of children; but no, these were not children, they had horrible large eyes staring at him. They were picking him up, studying him. Mark Bernards body was discovered the next morning. No trace of aggression was found on the body. Later the autopsy showed nothing except that Mark died of a cardiac arrest. Frank and Paul would miss him terribly. They both found that there were a few questions that were unanswered. What was Mark doing at the far end of the field with his gun out of its case beside him? One day the police station had a visitor that said that he knew the answers to those questions and that person was Normand Chass. He tried to explain to his parents and the police that it was the little creatures with large black eyes that killed the sergeant. His parents thought that their son was having a depression. Normand would constantly talk about it. His parents thought it would be best he see a psychiatrist. A week later Normand was signed into a mental institute. As the days past his depression degenerated and Normand went silent

Glenn Gillis:The Field Chapter 10 H-X-Tech At 3:00pm, the smell of fresh percolated coffee filled the Hospital cafeteria. As usual, Linda was sitting at a table with another nurse eating a croissant with her coffee. Their conversations would generally be about wages or strictly medical. Laura Morelli took the habit of sitting down with Linda at every break. She found Linda to be very sociable and took a liking to her. Laura was five foot two, in her forties, large hips and, buttocks and a large thick pair of breasts she also was very talkative. Linda was friendly with the Italian woman, but sometimes had a hard time keeping up with her conversations, which were mostly about her family. Sometimes Linda would find the womans conversations somewhat interesting, but then there were times she got on her nerves, but whatever the conversations were about today, Linda had a hard time concentrating. There was only one thing on her mind today and that was Charlie. As the woman was explaining what a hard time she had lived with her first husband, Linda slowly started losing all contact with reality. She was seeing herself in Charlies arms. She was thinking about the movie, the restaurant and about how he kissed her last night. He hadnt changed that much through the years. He still had some of the freckles on his nose and upper cheeks. Linda. said Laura. Are you listening? she said with a chuckle. Whats the big smile on your face about? Hun smile, oh nothing, its just something I remembered. Well, I will see you later Linda. Then Laura walked away. Linda looked up at the clock on the wall and noticed that her coffee break was up. She sipped the rest of her coffee and proceeded to leave the cafeteria. She couldnt wait to see Charlie again. *** Monday was hard starting off at the office, but now that wasnt anything unusual at H-XTech-Com. Non of the sixteen employs were allowed to smoke outside or inside, no friendly phone calls of chatting on the job. That was Mr. Higgens policy the boss of H-X-Tech inc. The last time the office building had a paint job was seven years ago and to this day the light green and white color still looks as if its just been painted. Charlie was what you can say satisfied with the job, or almost. He didnt like it as much as when he had first begun, but he was satisfied with the salary. Somehow, the job was getting to him. It seemed to be the same 46

Glenn Gillis:The Field thing day after day after day. He was thinking seriously of working for another company doing other work than building programs. There were many other things you could do on a computer, graphic designs full of passivitys. Charlie knew that whatever other job there was to do on the computer; he would be good at it. He had many programs to finish by the end of the day and by the end of the week as well. If he put his mind to it, he would surely finish it, but his mind was elsewhere today. He was thinking of Linda, he wanted to be close to her. He was thinking of yesterday, how beautiful she is. He imagined making love to her for hours. Enough of this, he thought, he was beginning to get an erection. He had to concentrate on his work. He looked at the small screen. OK, where was I? His fingers started tapping on the small keyboard, but then he was surprised with all the work he had to do. He stopped and looked around. He wondered why the others didnt have as much to do as he did and it frustrated him. This was only his second year working for the company. It was true that the others were here longer than he, but that didnt give them the right to throw most of the hard work to him. Anyway self-pity wasnt going to help him finish his work, so he started tapping at the keyboard again hopping he could keep his mind to it. At the back of the office, was a small room with its door always kept open. That was Mr. Higgens office. In eight years, things sure have changed. H-X-Tech wasnt always as flourishing as it is today. Eight years ago, H-X-Tech started out as an idea in a small four and a half apartment on the corner of Tupper and Sussex Street Atwater. There was only two employees working for him at the time and in only two years H-X-Tech, has become a real gold mine. Although he thought he always got along with his staff, he could sometimes be a real pain in the neck, but things have really changed in two years. There were progressing and things were going along much faster. Two years ago, Mr. Higgens hired a new hand and that person was Charlie Beaudoin. He found Charlie to be very accurate with the computer, as a matter of fact, a lot better that most of the other employs. Higgens knew that he could count on Charlie to do the most sophisticated analysis and programming and that was why most of the other companies rather have Charlie do the job. Higgens knew that eventually he would see Charlie come into his office asking for a raise. ***

47

Glenn Gillis:The Field It took Linda an hour to get home from work. As usual, the pavement was being repaired in certain places, which slowed down traffic. She entered the parking lot and parked her car then headed to the front entrance of the apartment building. She reached the elevator, but she noticed a note stuck on the door. (OUT OF ORDER) -Damned, not again. This was the second time in two weeks. Luckily, Lindas apartment was on the third floor and not the tenth. As she reached the apartment door, she could hear the phone ringing from inside. She hurried to unlock her door and rushed to answer the phone, but as she said hello, the other end had hung up. Damned, she said frustrated letting herself fall seated on the couch. Her feet were killing her from the hard day's work. She pulled off her white shoes and felt total relaxation as she massaged her feet. After stretching out a bit, she got up again and went to hang up her coat. What I need is a hot shower She entered the bathroom, unzipped the back of her white dress letting it drop to the tile floor as she did with her bra and panties. She entered the shower and adjusted the temperature of the water, but then again the phone began ringing. She closed the shower curtains and hurried to answer. Hello? Hello Linda, its Charlie. Charlie, how are you? Great, just great, you just got in right? Why yes, how did you was it you that just called a while ago? Yes, why didnt you answer? I did , but you hung up on me. Oh, sorry about that Linda, I thought you hadnt arrived yet. As she turned around she could see herself in the mirror completely naked and it sort of amused her talking to Charlie in this manner. If only he could see me now Charlie didnt know what he should say, but he just had to hear her voice. Ah, how was work today Linda? Oh, just as usual, busy as hell. Chuckles Linda, would you like having dinner again tonight? said Charlie crossing his fingers. Well; OK, but why dont we have supper here. That even pleased him more. 48

Glenn Gillis:The Field Great then, your place it will be. Do you like Chinese? That would be fine. She could view her hardened nipples in the large mirror. She imagined it was Charlie that was caressing them. OK then Linda, see you later, bye. As she hung up the phone, she headed towards the shower in a hurry as she remembered it was still running. *** The kitchen table had been abandoned after a rewarding supper. Only a few leftovers remained in two plaits and one empty wine bottle. Their dream had finally come true. Both naked and engulfed in desire never wanting this moment to end. Charlie looked deep into Lindas beautiful blue eyes. Linda, I love you and have loved you ever since I met you. Suddenly a large smile appeared on Lindas face after hearing Charlies feelings for her. And I love you so much too Charlie. They both resumed what they had begun until they both fell asleep. In the early hours of the morning, Linda began to have a strange dream. In the dream, it was a very foggy night. Echoes could be heard coming from a distance. A light, a very bright light was glowing above. Strange low grunt noises could be heard around her. Suddenly the thick fog was sucked away from every direction. She could see clearly now. She was not outside, but in a sort of what looked like a dungeon, no, not a dungeon, but a very large craft. There were strange creatures moving about; they were horrible looking errors of nature. Little beings the size of children were pushing and pulling them toward a sort of confinement quarters. Suddenly she sensed a close presence. She lets out a scream of panic as she sees a pair of large black eyes looking at her. Something was crawling up on her, she couldnt distinguish exactly what it was, but then she did. A hand; a hand with long thin tentacle like fingers fondling her. Nooooooooooooooooooo! Something was shaking her. Linda, Linda, wake up. She opened her eyes and seen Charlie sitting beside her. She put her arms around his neck for protection. Its alright Linda, Charlie reassured her. 49

Glenn Gillis:The Field It was just a bad dream, youre alright now. Oh Charlie (sob) its that dream again. What dream Linda? She felt reassured in his arms, as her nightmare was slowly dissolving. Charlie was worried seeing how afraid she was. Linda everything is alright now, its over, it was just a bad dream. He gently wiped the tears from her cheeks and kissed her. He lifted her chin with his finger and an innocent smile appeared on her face. It was strange Charlie, it was in an odd place, there was? But Linda suddenly couldnt remember anymore. The dream had completely dissolved leaving no memory. Thats strange, I cant seem to remember anything? Well, it couldnt have been that bad a dream if you cant remember it anymore, he reassured her. Charlie, please make love to me again. He gently kissed her lips, then he moved her long blond hair to the side kissing her neck, but then something had caught his attention. Behind her neck, were three tiny scars. , but how could that be, he too had the same scars in the same place. He lets the thought pass as he lay her down he took his time. He wanted this moment again and again.

50

Glenn Gillis:The Field Chapter 11 Normand His room was filled with loneliness. He sat on the side of his bed looking out the window. The last time he had permission to leave the institute, he had refused. Despite his illness, his mother never let him down. She always trusted her sense of integrity thinking that one day Normand would come back to his senses. She never missed a birthday; and would gladly open the presents she had bought for him knowing that if she didnt, they would just stay in his room unopened. After three years, Hubert Chass had lost faith that one day Normand would be normal again. The psychiatrist kept telling him to keep hope, but he couldnt keep looking at the uninterested expression on his sons face. It has been almost a year that Normand has seen his father. Deep inside his heart, he missed him, but what was it worth. His father just like everyone never believed his story. Again today, he had permission to leave for the weekend. His mother was coming to get him. She would be here any moment. He was afraid, really afraid. It wasnt the fact that he would be going home, no, he knew that if he put a foot outside, he would be exposing himself to danger. They were surely out there just waiting for that chance. If he went home, they would summon him through the night abducting him again so that they could do all those horrible things to him again. The medication that he was receiving would sometimes help him forget, but the thought was always there, those large black eyes staring at him. He sat on the edge of the bed staring at the door. He loved his mother very much, but he would have to refuse again. *** December 10 As soon as Jennifer Cardinal had put down the receiver, she knew that she had to have preparations made. She was pleased to hear from her daughter again; not that she didnt hear from her as often, no; every two or three weeks Linda would phone home. Jennifer was pleased to find out about Linds little secret that her that she had been going steady with Charlie Beaudoin and that they were going to spend Christmas with them at home. She couldnt wait for Jessie to come home to announce the good news. Christmas would be different this year. Alain Beaudoin would be with them this year as well. There would be many friends to see again, but then she remembered Charlies poor friend Normand. She felt sorry for him. Maybe it would be better if Charlie didnt see him. She would talk about it with Linda. Jennifer looked around the living room trying to figure the best place to put the tree this year. In the corner of the room by the fireplace seemed to be perfect. 51

Glenn Gillis:The Field Now where did I put those boxes of decorations? She thought, holding her right elbow while her hand held her chin. *** December 13 At three oclock, the hospital cafeteria was filled with chatter. Linda needed another strong cup of coffee. A few moments earlier as she was returning from the operating room, the odd flashes had come back, the same as in her dreams. What could it mean? Why was she constantly having these odd dreams, these flashes? She would have to talk about them with Charlie. Maybe it would be better to consult a PSY. No, that was for other people, but then she remembered Normand. What could have happened to him? Could the same thing be happening to her? She could still recall the flashes she had earlier. She was going to the operating room to clean up and pick up two bottles of antiseptic needed in the emergency room when it hit her. She couldnt move, as if a mirage was appearing around her. The room resembled a cold dark oval dungeon. Strange gray flexible tubs were hanging from the ceiling. In the center of the room, people were tied down naked to a sort of metallic table. There was a presence in the dark room; children maybe, but she wasnt sure. The people were screaming. For an instant, she thought she recognized the voices. The little children no, these were not children, their shape, it was different, it was ugly. Suddenly one of the small creatures noticed her presence and was slowly turning around to meet Lindas gaze. She wanted out, wanted this to end. There was a hissing sound. It was getting louder as the thing was turning, turning to meet her gaze. Horrible large black oval eyes blinked like that of a reptile. NO! she shouted. The thing was zooming in on her. The loud hissing sound was intolerable and the eyes were closing in on her. She shouted putting her hands to her face. Tranquility took hold of the room. She slowly removed her hands from her face. Nothing. She was alone in the hospital operating room. The aroma of fresh coffee filled the cafeteria. Linda was still shaking, but it was over, she had to relax now. She decided that she would have to forge an explanation to finish the day. After giving an explanation to the head nurse, she headed to her locker room. She took off her uniform and changed into regular close. She put on her winter coat and boots, closed the locker door and proceeded towards the hallway. She was just about to reach the entrance when Dr. Simpson crossed her path. He smiled when he saw her.

52

Glenn Gillis:The Field Dr. Simpson, she thought. He would have an explanation for these spells Im having? Linda was just about to turn around and catch up with him, but she reconsidered. She who was supposed to be a healthy and competent young nurse. What would he think; what if it was mental. They wouldnt hesitate to lay her off. Wait a minute, what am I thinking. This is absurd. No one is going to lay me off. All I need is a hot bath and two Tylenols. Linda! a voice called from behind, it startled her. My, you sure are jumpy today young lady. She relaxed as she noticed the friendly smile on Dr. Simpsons face. You must be wondering why Im leaving so early. Nurse Henley tells me you're not feeling well. Well, yes I He gently laid his hand upon her right shoulder. Its alright Linda. His voice was soft. You go right ahead Linda, youve must have had a rough week. Listen, I want you to come in only when you are feeling top shape you hear. It reassured her hearing those comforting words. I- I will be fine Dr. Simpson, it must only be a cold coming up. Well, he replied with a smile. If it gets any worse, you come see me you hear. As she gets closer to the entrance doors, the magic eye catches her movement and the doors open letting the cold winter air in. She covers her face with the collar of her coat and walks to the parking lot. She would have to talk to Charlie about her spells. *** Large snowflakes fall gently and bluntly. Christmas carols could be heard in almost every store in the large city. People fill the stores like ants looking for the best presents to offer. The atmosphere is spirit lifting. Charlie is pleased with the present he just purchased for Linda. He couldnt wait for their Christmas holidays to begin on the weekend. They both were happy about spending Christmas back home in Golden Valley this year. Charlie was heading towards his car when he felt a sharp pain he recognized. A sharp stinging pain coming from the back of his right ear. He stopped and held onto a parking meter, and waited for it to pass. Dammed, not again, he thought as he held onto the cold metal. Usually the headaches would emerge early in the morning, but this was the first time he had them during the day. He kept it a secret from Linda, but eventually he would have to see a Doctor. He squinted his eyes 53

Glenn Gillis:The Field and put his hand to the back of his head. Suddenly it would pass. Slowly he began walking to his car when a little jewelry boutique attracted his attention. A sudden smile appeared on his face as he spotted something through the window.

54

Glenn Gillis:The Field Chapter 12 Christmas December 15 OK bye, have a nice holiday and Merry Christmas. said Linda to one of the nurses leaving the Hospital. Every once in a while, Linda would turn her attention towards the clock. It was 3:35pm and her off was at 4:00pm. Linda, you know what? said Laura. Linda was now at the photocopying machine when she heard Laura talking to her. Pardon me? Linda asked uncertain. It's a my husband, hes a calla me yesterday night you know. Not again, Linda thought, dont tell me she is going to talk about that mean husband of hers. He asks me to forgive. You know Linda, the woman explained with a swaying of the hands while looking up at the ceiling with an almost spiritual expression. Maybe its a better to forgive for Christmas, yes? Linda did not know whether to answer with a yes or no, but judging the circumstances, she thought it would be better to say yes. Ah yes Laura, I suppose. You know Linda, my a husband Rudolf, he was not a always so bad, its a just because Before Laura could finish what she was going to say, Linda found an excuse to do something else. She didnt need to hear the tiresome story of how her husband used to be such a good person before he started beating her every time he got drunk. Im sorry Laura, but I have to bring these copies to the desk before four oclock, I will be right back. Its OK Linda, we a talk later. Laura was thinking of calling her husband to invite him over for supper tonight, but what if he was drinking that afternoon. Who was she kidding, why should Christmas change him, it never did before. Suddenly an emergency code was announced on the intercom. A commotion was coming from the emergency room. As the doors opened, the ambulance team was trying their best to revive an injured woman. Laura hurried to call Dr. Simpson on the intercom. Linda was almost at the front desk when she heard Lauras voice. Automatically, she turned back in a hurry knowing there was an accident and a patent was being brought in. The sir rum bags held by the ambulance team were swaying. A right arm was hanging loose from 55

Glenn Gillis:The Field the side of the stretcher. Blood was dripping from the fingers onto the floor. In no time at all, nurses were attending the Dr. in a well-equipped room trying to reanimate a pulse from the patient before carrying her to the operating room. Apparently, from what the ambulance team explained, the middle-aged woman had just gotten off a local transport bus and proceeded to cross the street. She had not noticed that the lights had changed. Another local bus was coming downhill towards her. He honked his horn repeatedly. The woman saw the bus and panicked. She was quick enough to turn back, but as she did, she slipped and fell hurting her knee. She screamed seeing the bus in her direction. The bus driver kept honking. A man seen the woman and was about to help, but it was too late. Suddenly the woman lay beneath the bus. The man, but his hands to his face and walked away. Linda was somewhat nervous thinking that surely she would have to assist back in the operating room. What if I have flashes while assisting? No, I have to do this and do it right, come on Linda girl, get a hold of yourself. Precious time was passing and though they tried everything possible to revive the woman, it was too late, she died from multiple injuries. Linda felt a little guilty, but why, nothing could be done. It was now 4:00pm. Her shift was over at last. She needed a vacation; yes, a good and long rest. She needed time to figure out what her problem was. Something was missing. A few moments later, Linda sat behind the wheel of her small Ford Escort. She was on the Cte des Neige street heading towards Mount Royal. The car windshield wipers were flapping left and right clearing the view from the heavy snowflakes. As usual, traffic was slow. She was thinking of Charlie, the last time they were together. She treasured the memory of every moment. Zooming out of view, the little Ford Escort was one of thousands of vehicles moving through traffic in the big city.

56

Glenn Gillis:The Field Chapter 13 The Long Trip December 20 Linda checked and re-checked the luggage and everything was there. At last, their holiday has begun. Charlie left the building and walked towards the parking lot with one last satchel in his arm. OK Linda, we're ready to leave. I hope this nice weather wont change. Of course not Linda, Charlie replied with a smile. Look, said Charlie spreading his hands to the sky. Its not snowing today and I say it will be a beautiful day. Linda looked up at the sky with doubt. Charlie noticed the little grin. Oh come on Linda, lets get going, Im telling you its going to be a beautiful day. I know Charlie, Im just kidding. (Chuckles) Charlie switched cars and parked his Honda Civic in Lindas parking space. Fifteen minutes later, they were on the highway swarming with traffic as if everyone had decided to leave all at the same time. Once they past the sky- scrapers, manufactories and publicity signs of the busy city, they finally reached the limit of the city on highway 15 heading towards the serenity of the country. The music coming from the radio was from the 60s Under the boardwalk, I found the sun Under the boardwalk, we were having fun Linda cuddled close to Charlie laying her head on his shoulder and holding onto his right arm. They both were thinking of home and were impatient to arrive. Suddenly Linda noticed a smile on Charlies face. Whats that smile about? Oh, I was just thinking of something that happened at the office yesterday. Well, what happened? asked Linda Charlie didnt say anything. He enjoyed teasing Linda in that manner, knowing she couldnt stand guesses. He kept the smile. She knew he was teasing her and she loved him for doing so. Charlie! she exclaimed gently slapping his leg. Tell me or I will scream. OK, OK, he said with a chuckle.

57

Glenn Gillis:The Field Richard, one of the co-workers, he gets a kick out of playing tricks on people every once in a while. Well, you see, Carole Marchand is one of the girls in the back office, you know the one Ive been telling you about that thinks that she really is something else. Ah hem. Linda replied Richard bought a you know, one of those flat rubber cushions that make a funny sound when you sit on them, he put it under Caroles seat cushion. No! What happened? Well, that morning everyone knew about it and sat at their desks quietly waiting to see what would happen. You should have seen her face after she heard that funny noise. (Chuckles) Linda was already giggling. Hahaha, what was her reaction? Well, when she saw everybody laughing, she caught on, she started laughing and even sat on it again and again. She did have a good sense of humor after all. That was close though wasnt it. Yeah well. (Chuckle) What about you Linda, what was your last day at work like? Not very funny, I can tell you that much. We had a patient in the emergency room that died on us, and Laura started talking about her husband again. Charlie felt cornered for Linda. He couldnt remember a day that she came home with a smile on her face, or feeling satisfied with her work. It was mostly the expression of stress. Maybe being a nurse wasnt made for her. If it continued, she would seriously have to think of starting a new career. Linda, maybe your job is too hard for you Linda. Linda felt uncomfortable with Charlie had just said, yet she knew he wasnt blind. No, it couldnt be her job; she loved being a nurse and always wanted to be one. I love my job Charlie, its just that . . . Maybe this was a better time than any to talk about it. She had to tell him. She had to let it out. If he loved her, he would understand. Linda, what about your nightmares, maybe its more than just a vacation that you need? No Charlie, no, my job has nothing to do with it, its this strange sensation of how can I explain dj-vu. 58

Glenn Gillis:The Field

Charlie, ever since I was just a kid, I sometimes kept having strange nightmares, but now I have them, but even when Im awake. The strangest thing is that I only have these flashes when I enter the operating room. Charlie, I dont know what it means, but after I have these seizures, they are always followed by headaches. I keep seeing myself in a strange place that always involve the same children and ugly looking little creatures with large black eyes. Charlie had a difficult time analyzing what he just heard; however, there was something she had said that struck him. Linda you say you have bad headaches? Yes, but only after the flashes. Where does it hurt the most? Linda looked at Charlie wondering why he wanted to know. Linda, tell me. She put her fingers behind her ear. Right around here, in the back of my neck. What was this all about? How could she have them in the same spot as he? Linda, I have the same headaches and at the very same spot as you. I also had the same flashes once or twice. Linda looked at him without saying anything. Was he laughing at her, but there was no smile on his face. You you have? Yes Linda, I never told you before because I Before he could say another word, Linda cut short his words. What does it mean Charlie? I dont know, but maybe it has something to do when we were kids. Linda, maybe we should consult, it already crossed my mind. I dont know Charlie, Im not sure. She replied with an uncertain expression. OK, lets forget it for now Linda, we are on vacations, well talk about it later. He laid his hand upon her knee and she leaned her head against his shoulder. As the Laurentians came into view, they caught a glimpse of the sky slopes filled with hundreds of skiers descending the slopes. Their next stop was in a little town called Mount Laurier where they had a poutine for lunch. *** 59

Glenn Gillis:The Field There still were many things to prepare. Linda and Charlie would be arriving in just a few hours and although Jennifer thought she had everything ready, there was still a doubt in her mind. There was a debate about whether the children should sleep at their place or Alains? They both had commodious houses, but finally came to a decision that the children were old enough to decide on their own. At one oclock that afternoon, the Ford Escort had parked in the Cardinals front driveway. Jessie had stayed home that day to greet their guests. Alain Beaudoin was delivering a shipment of mining supplies out of town, and would be back by five oclock. Before there was time to knock on the door, the front door had opened. Jennifer looked at her daughter with joy. Jessie was right beside her. Linda honey, said Jennifer hugging her daughter. Although they both knew of their arrival, they were surprised by the sudden appearance. Jessie hurried to shake Charlies hand. They both accepted him as if he were their son in law. Although Charlie had changed into a young man now, he still had a little of that baby face. Jessie, take their bags upstairs. said Jennifer. Oh, thats OK Mrs. Cardinal, Charlie replied. I will bring them in, there arent that much. Now now Charlie, Jessie replied in a cordial manner tapping his shoulder. Youre our guests here and I would be pleased to help. Let me look at you, said Jennifer taking a step backwards. Her daughter was a woman now and a qualified nurse. She was proud things had changed for the better. Mother, you only seen me last year, I couldnt have changed that much. Oh, but yes you did, her mother replied with a chuckle. Charlie came back with the luggage, Jessie followed not far behind. This is all there is Mrs. C. Charlie announced entering the front door. Jennifer was surprised with the way Charlie had just called her, but it did sound much friendlier. Here, let me take that up stairs. Sure you dont need help? said Charlie. No no, make yourselves comfortable, you both had a long trip. As they both entered, Linda automatically recognized the familiar odor. It reminded her of her childhood and she felt secure. After helping with the luggage, Jessie decided to ask them and get it over with. Ah, Jennifer and I were wondering, will you be staying here or at Alains? We prepared a room upstairs and 60

Glenn Gillis:The Field Linda and Charlie were smiling knowing that surely they would ask that question. Mom, replied Linda smiling, we talked about it on the way down and well, Charlie felt it would be better if he slept at his fathers for a few days, and I stay with you for a few. They both looked at Linda and Charlie surprised, but finally accepted their decision. Well, whatever you say, said Jessie with a smile showing no offense. *** She felt content bringing Normand his Christmas present, but that was not the only reason. Normand had begun talking again. It wasnt every day normal talk conversation, but at least he was talking to her again. Sometimes he looked so sincere and sure, of himself she could almost want to believe what he was telling her. When? She wondered, when would her son come out of it. Why did it have to happen to him and not his friends? Normand was such a healthy young boy. She held back her emotions, this was not a day to be sad and this was a day to celebrate. She was sure Normand would be happy to receive his gift. *** Christmas eve was special this year at the Cardinals, family and friends were reunited once again. Alain Beaudoin was proud of his son and just like Helen and Jessie, he expected Linda as if she were his daughter-in-law. Charlie couldnt wait for midnight to come. There was still half an hour left. Linda would surely be surprised with the little gift Charlie had to offer her. He could not wait for her to open it. In the living room beside the fireplace, presents of all sizes were placed beneath the Christmas tree. Hanging just above the fireplace, pinned on the large wooden beam, were large red stockings inflated with surprises. Charlie and Linda were sitting close together chatting with relatives, but every once in a while, Charlie would look at the stockings which reminded him of when he was just a child his father would do the same. It felt good to be home again, but there was something missing, something precious, his old buddy Normand. He would have to see him again, what could have happened to him. He thought about it and decided he would have to see him. It was almost midnight and everyone was eager to open their gifts. At 12:01 am, every gift was being unwrapped. After opening the gifts that Linda had for Charlie, it was Linds turn to open hers. There was only one, a very tiny one. Everyone gazed with wonder, could it be what they were thinking? Linda opened the tiny gift with excitement hoping it was what she was thinking, but no, it couldnt be, but what she found was unbelievable. She was shaking with excitement. It was a tiny engagement ring.

61

Glenn Gillis:The Field Her heart skipped a beat, tears rolled down her cheek. Everyone was overjoyed and applauded the young couple. Oh Charlie, said Linda crying with joy. She put on the ring and rushed into Charlies arms. Everyone was emotional. OK people, said Jessie as he headed towards the kitchen and was back in no time with a bottle of Champaign. This needs a toast. Glasses were served and everybody celebrated. *** December 25 The next morning as Linda woke up, the first thing she did was look at her left finger. He actually proposed She hurried out of bed and headed into the shower. A few moments later, she got dressed and went downstairs to join her parents that were already having breakfast. Hi mom, hi dad. she said with a smile, and then went to the phone. Jennifer was already preparing another batch of fresh pancakes. Linda, dont you think you should have something to eat first. Yes mom, this wont take long. Alain was just about to go out the door when he heard the phone. Hello. No Linda, Charlie isnt here, I was just about to drop by your place. Charlie said he will be back, he said he wanted to see Norman. Normand? Linda replied. There was a pause at the other end. Alain knew about Normand, he also knew that maybe this wasnt the best time for Charlie to see his friend, but Charlie insisted anyway. Linda, are you still there? Yes, she replied Dont worry Linda, he said hed bed back in no time at all, I will see you in a few minutes. OK Mr. Beaudoin. Jessie and Jennifer could see the disappointing expression on their daughters face What Linda, whats this about Normand? Oh nothing, its just that Charlie- well, its been bothering him for a while now, so he went to pay Normand a visit, he will be back soon. 62

Glenn Gillis:The Field Went to see Normand, but? Jennifer exclaimed. Linda sat down at the table a little disappointed, but willing to accept Charlies sudden decision. But. . .? Said Jessie waiting for an answer. Yes dad, we know about Normand and thats whats been bothering him. Well dont you worry Linda, said Jennifer offering Linda some hot pancakes. He will find out what he wants to know and that will be the end of it. I guess youre right, she replied taking a look at her new ring. Entering the parking lot, Charlie found a place to park. He stopped the engine, but did not get out right away. He sat there staring at the building. It was a small mental institute. What would he say to Normand, how would Normand react when he would see him? He got out of his car and headed to the front entrance. As he entered, he noticed a middle-aged man standing straight and saluting him like an army officer. Another had his hands on the top of his head talking to himself. Charlie hurried to the front desk where a woman dressed in a nurse costume greeted him. Yes, what can I do for you Sir? Ah, Im here to see Normand Chass. Are you a relative? What should he say; maybe only close relatives were allowed to visit? Yes, Im his cousin. Room 45 down the hall to your left. Once Charlie found the door number, he was very nervous. He gently knocked and entered. Normand was sitting on the side of the bed staring out the window. Normand turned around and looked at him. Normand, its me Charlie. His expression was peculiar. Charlie found Normands complexion to be pale. Charlie, your, your alive. Why would Normand say he was alive, did he think he was dead? Why yes Normand, sure Im alive. I thought that they had you disappear just like they did the sergeant. What was he talking about, what sergeant? Normand got off the side of the bed and walked up to Charlie putting his hands on him. Charlie, what about Linda, is she still alive? Of course she Normand and Charlie, do you ever have these aching headaches and strange hallucinations?

63

Glenn Gillis:The Field Charlie was surprised with what Normand had just said, how could he possibly have known about his headaches or could it be just a coincidence. Normand, Linda and I are Charlie, cant you remember; no, of course not. Normand said discouraged as he walked towards the window. When we were younger Charlie, the UFO that abducted us--those bastards implanted some little device in our brain. No one will believe me, but you Charlie. He precipitated towards his friend. You believe me, dont you Charlie? I told them it was those little creatures that killed the sergeant. Charlie was completely overcome with discouragement. What was his poor friend talking about, UFOs and who was the sergeant that was killed? My God, Normand, what are they doing to you here.: Its not here Charlie, here Im safe, they cant get me here, but you Charlie, you and Linda are not safe out there. Normand, we are just fine. Although the words didnt seem true, there was something about what hed said concerning the strange headaches and Lindas hallucinations that intrigued him. No- just a coincidence, this was a mental institute. It wouldnt do any good to announce his engagement to Linda. Normand returned to the side of the bed, his face showing no expression, his gaze looking out the window. Charlie didnt know whether to stay for a few more minutes or to leave. Charlie, dont ever go back to that place again. What place Normand? The field Charlie, the field. The eyes, the large black eyes that stare at you, reading your mind. Charlie felt it was time to leave. Normand was alone in his world. There was nothing he could do for him. I have to go now Normand, I will be back sometimes. Charlie opened the door and as it closed behind him, he looked over his shoulder. Goodbye my friend. Normand wouldnt say a word, but only kept staring out the window. Charlie closed the door behind him and walked towards the front desk. As he walked towards his car in the parking lot, he tried to make some sense out of what Normand was trying to tell him. Did he really know what he was talking about? It seemed so absurd.

64

Glenn Gillis:The Field The weather had changed to gushing winds, blowing snow making it hard to see. Ice formed on the windshield sticking the wipers to the glass. After scraping the windshields, Charlie got into the car and waited for the engine to warm up before leaving. Through his windshield, he could vaguely see Normands silhouette staring out his window.

65

Glenn Gillis:The Field Chapter 14 The Day Of The Eclipse Late that night, both Charlie and Linda were lying in bed still awake. After thinking it over, they had finally decided to sleep together at Alains house because Charlies room was upstarts and his fathers was on the first floor. At Lindas parents house, all rooms were on the second floor. Charlie had a difficult time telling Linda what he had heard Normand say that afternoon. Im telling you Linda, those are his exact words. But Charlie, how could he possibly know of our headaches, how could he know about the flashes? Charlies expression showed concern. Its as if there was a part missing? We only remember riding our Bikes up Dennison Boulevard, but what happened after that? He tried desperately to recall, but the more he tried the headaches would persist. II was supposed to to meet someone that night; I think. Meet who? Linda said. A vision of Normand came to him. Normand? he said surprised. Suddenly tiny pieces of the puzzle were beginning to unfold. He could see a little object, a little blue object. Linda, I can remember a little blue object, we were playing with it. At that very moment, a sharp cracking pain came from the back of his head. Linda hurried to grab Charlies unbalance gesture. Charlie, whats wrong? Charlie bent down his hands against his head. Linda held him in her arms trying to comfort him. A minute later, it was gone. He felt better. Its OK now, its gone Linda, he said worried. We have to see a Doctor. She agreed as she held him tight. The next day Linda had changed her mind; it was just too difficult for her, what if they did find something in her brain, in both of them. Things were too good for the moment and the future seems promising. Maybe in the future, but for the moment . . . *** 66

Glenn Gillis:The Field May 30th 1994, the day of the eclipse. Now that they were engaged, they both decided to stay together. Lindas apartment was the largest. After a week of packing and unpacking boxes, they were finally all installed. Charlie entered the small parking lot, and parked his red Plymouth Voyager just beside the Ford Escort. It was strange seeing the afternoon in pitch darkness. Everyone at the office was talking about the eclipse this morning, but it was about three quarters to the end and the afternoon was getting brighter. As he got out of the drivers seat, he took another look at his new minivan. It wasnt new, but only two years old. With the exchange of his Honda Civic, he got a very reasonable price for it and now they would have much more space if ever they were to go on vacations. He had already thought of purchasing it, but the engagement ring had cut his finances back. As he headed towards the building, he suddenly stopped in his steps. He found it strange that Linda should be home this early. He looked at his watch, which indicated 2:30pm. Whatever the reason for her absence at work, the timing couldnt have been better. *** Linda had come home earlier than usual. This morning just like every other morning for the past month was supposed to be perfectly normal. She went to work feeling propitious, but after an hour on the job, the strange sensation that she had almost forgotten had emerged once again like a fearsome predator. She hoped that it would eventually disappear, but it did not. She hurried to the womans room. Once there, she approached the sink, turned on the cold-water tap and splashed her face with water. Unfortunately, it did not help. She felt a light pressure mounting to her head. Her vision was beginning to blur. The room around her was changing. Obscure visions of another place appeared. The foggy vision was dissipating and clearing. She was at the place again, a large dungeon like room. Something grayish was dripping from the ceiling. There were large tube like structures stuck to the walls and they were covered the grayish substance. Even the dark tubular gray walls were sluggish with the substance. In the center of the large room were two-rectangular metal like platforms that resembled Embalmment beds. She had a sensation of levitation, and being placed on the metal bed by hands. Oh no, noooooooooooo Linda puts her hands to her face trying desperately to shake the vision away. Once the hellish hallucination had vanished, she left work finding an excuse to give to the head nurse. Once she reached her apartment, she took a hot shower and tried to relax. As she was drying 67

Glenn Gillis:The Field herself with the bath towel, she noticed strange red dots on her arm. There were four of them aligned one beside the other. She examined herself in the large mirror. There were four other dots on her abdomen. What was the meaning of this, they looked just like little scorches, she tried to recall what had happened at work, but the more she tried the more her head would ache. This cant go on any longer, she thought. She would have to stop delaying or it will never stop. She and Charlie will have to see Dr. Simpsons. She covered herself and entered the living room. She lay down on the couch. It was quiet now. There were only faint sounds coming from outside the building, the sound of hissing winter winds blowing against the window. From inside the building, she could hear the elevator being used by someone followed by the sound of a ding. Footsteps seemed to be approaching in the hallway. From the style of walk, she knew that it had to be someone young, for it was a fast and smooth walk. There were not that many people on her story that wore sandals or running shoes. It surely had to be Charlie. It was easy to recognize his walk, but something was different. She looked at the clock above the bookstall that indicated 2:31pm. What was Charlie doing here so early? She knew he had his key. She closed her eyes and pretended to be sleeping. Charlie took out his key unlocked the door and called out her name. Linda, you home? No answer. He walked towards the bedroom, looked inside. She was not in her room and the bed was not undone. He turned towards the living room, thats when he noticed Linda asleep on the couch. Linda had a difficult time pretending to sleep. He knelt down beside her and undressed her while admiring her beauty. She twitched and he knew that she wasnt sleeping, but only playing with him. Unable to hold back any longer, she opened her eyes and let out a burst of laughter. You actress, I thought you were asleep. How can I sleep with you beside me. She put her arms around his neck and kissed him repeatedly. Come on, get dressed, I have something I want to show you. Whats the hurry, what is this all about? Come on, you will see. She hurried to the room, dried herself in a hurry and slipped into a pair of jeans and red T-shirt. ***

68

Glenn Gillis:The Field Linda was quite excited and amazed to see the red colored Van. Well, what do you think? asked Charlie with a big smile. Charlie, you didnt. Yes I did. She focused on the van. But why a Van? she asked with a grin. You dont like it. He asked. Well yes, but why a Van and not a car? Well I thought about that yes, and and. What should he answer? Space, its the space, lots of space. How much? said Linda. Take a look for yourself. Thats not what I meant Charlie. Oh, well, not that much you know. Charlie, how much. Alright, I paid one grand for it, can you believe that. Charlie replied with a grin. Its a 1982 Plymouth Voyager and the dealer said it was in good condition, lots of space Linda. She looked at him still smiling. Well what are we waiting for Charlie, lets try it out. Tre try it out, sure. He replied pleased with Linds reaction. They spent the rest of the afternoon driving throughout the city each their turn until they decided to stop at a restaurant for supper. It was surprising how easy it was for Charlie to help change Linds ideas and anxieties. The spicy smell was pleasant as they entered the Italian restaurant. Charlie chose a table at the back just beside a window. While they waited to be served, they chatted about car brands, but were very satisfied with the deal Charlie had made on his car. Linda, do you remember the first time we met here in Montreal. Yes Charlie, it was at the Hospital. What I meant was the first time we had dinner together. Of course I do, it was she looked around and had a sensation of dj vu. Charlie, this is the place we Yes it is Linda. He replied with a chuckle. She looked deep into his eyes. There wasnt any change in him since the first day they met. He always was so charming and loving natured. 69

Glenn Gillis:The Field Charlie I love you so much. Linda, how did you know I was just going to say the same? Oh, by the way Linda, why are you home so early this afternoon? Slowly her expression began to change. She turned her attention towards the large window. Linda, whats wrong, asked Charlie in a soft voice. I-I had them again Charlie, I was there again. Charlie was sad with what she just said, but on the other hand, he too was hiding something from her. Earlier, he too experienced a part of her daunting world. He now understood what she meant when she said it was a cold and dark place. They needed help and fast. Linda we have to. May I take your order now, said the waitress suddenly interrupting their conversation. She took their order in a hurry and went to the next table. Linda, I thought you were. No Charlie, I didnt yet, I didnt think it would happen again. Linda you have to, we have to. Charlie, Im afraid, Dr. Simpsons is almost my boss, he has a great deal of confidence in me. He took her hand and held it in his. Everything is going to be alright Linda, we have to find out what the meaning of this is. She thought of every word he said, she knew that Charlie was right, but she was afraid of the consequences. A few minutes later, their pizza arrived and was savored until the last piece.

Saturday June 27th 1994 Charlie decided to stop by the SAQ to buy a good quality bottle of wine, it was the perfect match with the steaks they were having for the evening meal. An hour later Linda was sitting at her table on the patio while Charlie arrived with their meals. Looks delicious Charlie. Yes, wait until you bite into this steak, cost me a fortune, but its worth it. Although Linda was feeling a little nauseous, she forced herself with a good serving. Charlie waited for Linda expression. Well . . . What do you think? 70

Glenn Gillis:The Field After she swallowed the first bite, she felt miserable and couldnt keep it down. She felt nausea and threw it up. This was the second time this week. Linda, whats wrong. He hurried to clean up. Charlie, Im not sure, but I think that I might be pregnant, I havent had my period in three weeks. Charlie couldnt believe what he just heard. What! Did you just say that you are pregnant? Charlie was so happy he couldnt stop kissing Linda. He couldnt stay in place singing: Im going to be a father, Im going to be a father. His childish humor made Linda laugh. This calls for a celebration Linda. No Charlie, Ive had enough, but you go right ahead. *** The next morning Linda stopped by the pharmacy to buy a pregnancy kit, a few moments later she knew she was in-fact pregnant.

Glenn Gillis:The Field Chapter 15 The day of the eclipse. November 5th One month earlier At the end of the second floor corridor, extremely bright lights could be seen coming from inside the door-frame of one of the patents rooms. Suddenly there was a scream coming from Normands room. One of the patents cried out for the help. Interns followed the security personnel as they rushed towards the room. As they opened the door, they noticed that Normand was missing. They searched the building including the premises; Normand was nowhere to be found. Three hours later that evening, Normand reappeared in his room, naked. His eyes were bloodshot, and he was shaking with shock. He was carried to the hospital where he was thoroughly examined. A few hours later, Normand was OK and was free to go. The next day, Normand was feeling much better; in fact, he hasnt felt this good for a very long time and asks permission to visit his parents. Two weeks later, Normand acts normal again. He is signed out of the psychiatric ward and is back living with his parents for the moment. His parents find it a little odd that Normand has suddenly recovered so fast, but are so happy that their son was back to his senses again. *** Their vessel is immobile camouflaged within the clouds. Their stealth radar hindrance system is kept on. The inner craft is airless and filled with the only gas they need to survive. Air is lethal to them; however; once they visit the planet, they wear special suits that are molded perfectly resembling their own body, they carry the gas they need to breath in special pouches. When warm-blooded beings are beamed to their space-roving vehicle for their experiments, so is a percentage the air around them. They can only keep the warm-blooded beings for so long, the amount of air around them diminishes as they inhale it. One hour at the most is sufficient for their work. However, one of their experiments has worked. They have finally succeeded in possessing one of their warm-blooded guinea pigs. They have some of his DNA just like the three others; but so far, their experiences trying to mix their own DNA have failed. The beings that have hatched did not resemble any warm-blooded nor their own, but strange creatures that they have to dispose of.

72

Glenn Gillis:The Field They have tried for centuries to add one element that the warm-blooded own that they do not. They can see it within them all their life and after the warm-blooded die; energy leaves the body into another detention that they cannot identify. That energy could change everything for them if only they could grasp it. In the meantime they still have two other important warm-blooded. The female one is expecting birth soon, maybe this time they will succeed. *** Charlie couldnt wait to get on the job early Monday morning to announce the good news. His boss and coworkers congratulated him. Of course, he would have to tell his old pal Normand. He could still recall when they were teenagers he always was a step ahead of Normand. He could still recall the day he bought his first ten-speed bicycle and proudly showed Normand, then after that, they would take a ride up at the old field where Suddenly Charlie began having miserable migraines again. It was strange; the same thing happens to Linda whenever she recalled things in the past. He seriously thought of talking to Linda about seeing Dr. Simsons. Of course Linda felt very uncomfortable about the idea, but something has to be done about these strange headaches. *** As Normand woke up, he sat on the edge of the bed and probed the room. He did not recognize the place, but then he did. He got up, walked to the washroom, and turned his attention towards the mirror. He observed himself with fascination. He opened his mouth and made grins watching his facial expressions. Mrs. Chass cries out: Normand, are you up son. Would you like to have breakfast now? Normand still staring into the mirror, his eyes suddenly changed color to dark black. He smiles. Yes mother. *** July 10 1994 The waiting room at the Dr. Simsons office was fairly quite Monday morning. Linda had taken an appointment with Dr. Simsons the week before. She told him that she was

73

Glenn Gillis:The Field pregnant and that she wanted him to be her Doctor, but she also explained the problem both were having, which made her very uncomfortable. Besides Linda and Charlie, three other people were waiting to hear their name called. A young woman in her teens maybe seventeen or eighteen at the most was reading a Womans Day magazine. By the size of her abdomen, she was obviously seven or eight months pregnant. The other two were elderly people. Just like them, the others were staring at the paintings on the wall, looking at the secretaries talking to each other about their work and the patents. Suddenly one of the office doors was opened and a Dr. was bidding a couple good day. Another name was called, the young girl got up and walked towards the office door. Charlie and Linda were alone in the waiting room. Charlie looks at Linda and asks: Linda what was it that you told Dr. Simsons again? I told you Charlie, I told him that Their conversation was interrupted as Lindas name was called Dr. Simsons was happy to see Linda. His expression wasnt of concern, but almost complacent. You really couldnt tell whether he had a smile on or not. They both sat in front of his desk. Dr. Simsons sat at his desk checking a file sheet. Linda never knew exactly what his age was, but looked to be in his forties. His hair was almost all white, but was not bald. His skin was soft with no wrinkles at all. His chin was strong and square. With a humorous expression, he looked at them and said: Now whats this I heard you tell me on the phone last week, you say that you both are having severe headaches and you Linda are having flashes? I know it might sound strange Dr. Simsons, but let me start from the beginning. It was difficult for Linda to explain everything in detail. She held her courage and went on explaining as much as there was to say. What would he think of her afterwards? What would the odds be of keeping her job after that? He listened to both of them with the utmost apprehension. After a while, he examined the back of their necks and indeed noticed the tiny circular scars. For a moment he did not say a word, but just put on his glasses and started studying a page or two in a large medical book on his desk. Well Dr? said Linda feeling a little anxiety. Have both of you ever had surgery while in your adolescence? Charlie was wondering what the Doc was trying to get at. Why- no Doc, not to my recollection. What about you Linda? Linda was just as baffled as Charlie with Dr. Simsons question. Linda slightly wavered her head from side to side before answering. No, why? 74

Glenn Gillis:The Field Oh, nothing too important, just wondering. After hearing both their stories, he found it strange that both of them had memory losses of their adolescence and both had the same kind of scars at the same place. This intrigued him and was willing to find out more. He picked up a prescription pad and began writing on it. Having finished, he gave both the paper. Heres something Ive prescribed for both of your headaches, and this is a blood test and the scanner I want you both to pass at the hospital this week. I dont think theres anything to worry about, but I want to be sure. In the meantime Linda, I want you to take a little vacation, just until I get the results. OK Dr. Simsons. They both got up and walked towards the door. As they opened the door Dr. Simsons gave them an appointment for in two weeks. Thank you Doc. Charlie said shaking his hand. Dr. Simsons walked to his desk thinking what he just heard them say. His assistant nurse had a serious problem and so did her fianc. He would have to go through their medical files and find out more. He had already seen patients having had bad L.S.D trips and never recovered because of shock syndrome. What was strange about these cases was that they both had the same kind of scars. He picked up the phone and dialed the Golden Valley Hospital. Not a word was said as Linda and Charlie left Dr. Simsons office. They left the medical clinic and walked towards the minivan, which was parked long side the sidewalk a block further up ahead. Suddenly Charlie wondered if he had put enough money in the parking meter. Unfortunately, there was a piece of paper under his windshield wiper. Crap! I guess this is not my day. Charlie found it strange that Linda still hadnt said a word ever since they left Dr. Smisons office. They entered the Dodge Plymouth and embarked the heavy traffic. It was bothering Charlie seeing Linda being so silent. OK Linda, let it out. For a moment, she didnt say anything, but suddenly looked at Charlie. Im afraid Charlie. Linda dont, everything will work out fine. But did you see the look on his face when we left, He told me to take a few days off Charlie, thats not fine to me. Linda, that doesnt mean hes you got it all wrong Linda, he told you to take a few days off untie he gets the results of the tests thats all.

75

Glenn Gillis:The Field His words reassured her. Maybe she was making too much out of it; nonetheless, it did bother her a little. Why were the scars there? One thing was sure; they were going to find out soon. I guess your right Charlie, she replied letting out a sight of relief. The density of the traffic was like a trail of ants.

76

Glenn Gillis:The Field Chapter 16 Three years earlier July 1991 A year after Mark Menards death, Alice Prince was still looking for answers. Alice was aware of the fact that Mark Menard was studying the unsolved field files before he died, which was the exact place that he was found. What was it with that field? What was he looking for? After going through the files herself, she studied the case for little more than a year after his death, but came against a brick wall. There were too many missing clues. Finally she let go and put more time in her job and her new fianc, Paul Rose. Two weeks later the station had received a few phone calls reporting seeing strange lights up by the field. That was more than enough to enhance Alices curiosity. She and Paul both started investigating. There was something going on and she wanted to get to the bottom of it. What really opened the case of the field again, was that that same year; a missing person search warrant was put out. A two-year-old child was missing for twenty-four hours only to be found later crying alone at the far end of the field. Alice sat at her desk studying the report of the missing children. The missing children were found in the field. Mark Menards body was found in the field. Everything corresponded. The children that were found said something about a little blue toy that made them laugh. Somehow, that rang a bell. She hurried to the file drawers that were in the next room. Opening the last drawer, she came upon what she was looking for. (Unsolved) was stamped on the front. (Presumption of abduction) May 1964 June 1968 Turning each page, she came upon something odd. The deposition that was given corresponded with the childs Apparently; the three children only remembered playing with a toy they said were theirs. She went on further reading more. Four years later, the same thing happened to all three. This time, two of the children talked about seeing a bright light, a blue light. The same blue lights that have been sighted by people. As she read on, an uncomfortable sensation gave her goose bumps. She closed the files and put them back in the bottom drawer. Suddenly she remembered something that happened back a few years back. Normand Chass, one of the abductees came into the station saying that he knew who killed The Sergeant Mark Benard. It was the UFO that killed him. The UFO?

77

Glenn Gillis:The Field Chapter 17 The Encapsulation Device Regrettably, Normand Chass has no idea of reality; he is in a controlled coma. The one that is replacing him is very cautious. Its true identity must not show. It must walk, speak, eat and replicate everything the real Normand does. Sleeping is impossible, for their species never sleep, so it must wait quietly in Normands room for at least ten hours because the real Normand wakes up overdue. It finds many human actions somewhat difficult and unnecessary. For example; eating, communicating by sound is unnecessary to their species. The weight of their body is much too heavy, so movement is sluggish. One thing that it does find pleasant is the warmth of the body, which they do not have. It can sense the energy within and around Normands body guiding him. Its mission is to capture this energy. They once owned such energy, but it was taken from them in a lost battle. The new encapsulation devices that it possesses will surly function, but first he has to find Charlie and Linda. Linda is expecting birth. The fetus is vital for their experiment. *** As Dr. Simsons sat at his desk, the fax machine came on. Medical files were coming out one by one. It was Charlie and Lindas medical files. He began studying them, and just as he thought, there was no record of any operation; however, similar symptoms beginning from 1976 to 1985 had already accrued. In 1976, Charlie was consulting a psychiatrist for oddity, but a few weeks later, a quick rehabilitation had ended the consultations. In 1977, Linda had been prescribed anti-psychotics. He was surprised by the prescription used. Antipsychotics are usually used to control depression or oddity symptoms. Two weeks after that the treatments had ended. In 1985 they both were proscribed Valium due to a severe case of shock. He put the files down and recalled what he had heard Charlie and Linda say a few days back. Doc. When we were going to school together, theres things we cant seem to remember, a real blackout. But I thought it was only me, but Linda cant either. The only thing I we remember, is riding up the Dennison Boulevard on our bikes one night, after that the only memory is being at home a week later taking pills for something that happened to both of us we have no recollection of. Surely something must have happened to them during those missing hours. Linda keeps having strange flashes of a dungeon like room and seeing children being tied down on steel 78

Glenn Gillis:The Field beds crying for help. She says she sees little creatures with large black eyes. Obviously, their story was too far fetched to be true; nonetheless, maybe there was an abduction involved, even rape. What intrigued him the most were the tiny circular scars they both have behind their necks. Eventually he would find out. *** He sat at the kitchen table eating the toast that was offered to him by Normands mother. How much chewing was enough so that he could swallow? The porridge was too soft for chewing and too thick to swallow, how should he proceed? Mother Chass, would you know how I could find Charlie Beaudoin and Linda Cardinal? Mr. Chass found it peculiar the way Normand was talking and let out a chuckle. Whats with that nonsense Normand, whatever happened to Mom son? Its mind was racing, what was mom, who was mom, mom: abbreviation for mother. Why Normand, look at your plate, youve got half the food on the table, whatever happened to your manners son. Do you know where I can find Charlie and Linda mom. Why theyre living in Montreal now, Helen replies as she takes away the plate and wipes the table. Lindas a well established nurse and Charlies working in the computer business somewhere in Montral, you know he always was crazy for computers and stuff, Montreal, where and what is Montreal? It would not ask for any more information about Montreal because it would sound too suspicious. For the moment, he would do as usual and watch the - what mother Chass called TV. It would surely find the information it needed eventually. *** July 17th 1994 Charlie was off for two days, so he took the opportunity to go bike path riding on Mount Royal near Cte des Neige. The path is usually for hiking, but Charlie and a few experimented mountain bikers enjoy the ride down. It was a beautiful day. He had to be careful in these trails. The last time he used this path he had to help an injured man to the hospital, thats where he had met Linda again. The day was perfect for cross-country bike riding. The air was filled with the fresh scent of foliage. The aging roots that invaded the path

79

Glenn Gillis:The Field in some places are now nude and worn down. Charlie keeps a firm grip on his brakes. He remembers all the curves and hills where to slow down and where he can speed up. Twenty five minutes later he reaches the bottom of the mountain, from there, he rides in his van that is parked long side the sidewalk a little further up ahead. He puts his bike in the back of the van, gets in the driver's seat, and drives on. Today they are supposed to get news from Dr. Simsons concerning the x-rays they both had taken last week. It made him a bit nervous, but at the same time, he was intrigued to find out what the scars revealed. *** Dr. Simsons was examining the x-rays of both Linda and Charlie. It revealed that they had both had surgical operations done on the back of their necks, but their medical records show no such surgical operation what so ever. He was stunned by what he was looking at. How could this be? The scanner revealed something ever stranger. There was some kind of little object implanted at that same spot. What on earth atrocities have they been through. By the way that the tiny operations were made, it surely had to be made by very experienced hands. *** Linda was assisting doctors operate on a patient that lasted for an hour. After the operation, she took off the latex gloves and was heading towards the cafeteria for her break when she heard Dr. Simsons call her name from behind. Linda, could you come to my office, I have something I would like to talk to you about. *** July 22 At four oclock in the afternoon, Linda and Charlie woke up feeling very drowsy from the sedatives. They didnt know that they were just beside one another in the recovery room. A nurse came by every ten minutes to check on them. Slowly they began realizing that they were in a hospital room. Linda probed the room and noticed Charlie was in a bed just beside her. Charlie looked at her and they both smiled.

80

Glenn Gillis:The Field How are you Linda? Im OK I guess, you? Were going to be fine Linda. They both closed their eyes and fell asleep. At 5:00pm, Dr. Simsons stopped by to check on both of them. He noticed that they were already having a long chat. So, how are my love birds feeling? Dr. Simsons explained the extraordinary situation about their operation. We removed two tiny objects from your necks, but it was a very delicate operation. The little objects had some kind of tiny tentacles attached to your cortex cerebrum and that was most probably the reason for the memory blackouts. He looked at both of them before he spoke. I never would have believed it if I didnt see it with my own eyes, I do have to admit, you both were abducted by who? I guess it has to be by a UFO because we dont have that kind of technology - anywhere. *** The huge vessel has been mobilized one hundred feet just above the chassis has. It is cloaked from view and radar. Only a slender humming sound coming from the energy side vents can be heard. They are agitated. They have lost connection with their human subjects. Lindas unborn is vital to them, for their new metamorphoses. New orders are sent to the human bait. Normand stops looking at the television set and sits straight. He understands the orders given to him, but is somehow contradicted. The real Normand within is now awake and tries to intervene, but is quickly controlled. *** August 5th Two weeks later, Linda and Normand are feeling much better. No more nightmares or bad headaches, but now their memories are slowly returning. Earlier during the afternoon in the operating room, Lindas flashes had returned. She recalls being in the womens washroom one afternoon after an operation and seeing a flash of light invade the room. She feels very drowsy. She is suddenly vanishing right through the building wall. Then she recalls seeing herself in the other operating room, a very large foggy 81

Glenn Gillis:The Field room. A constant low humming sound could be heard coming from every direction. She recognized the familiar odor that surrounded her; it was the odor of her own perfume. Suddenly there was movement near by. She turned toward where it was coming from. The movement was closing in on her. Now she can clearly distinguish what it was. Little creatures with large black eyes were surrounding her, observing her, telling her to be quiet. Long tentacle like fingers holding an instrument that looked like a syringe. She is pleading with them to stop, to let her go. Large black eyes look at her; they blink like that of a reptile. The skin is gray and seems firm. It has no mouth except for a little opening above its chin, but she can hear it talking to her in her mind. Everything is under control, do not be uncooperative. One of them is holding the syringe, her legs are being spread apart and the syringe needle enters her vagina. A gray reddish substance is being injected into her vagina. Suddenly everything is slowly fading away. She wakes up Lying on the floor of the womans washroom.

Lindas mind is racing. She tries to recall when this event had accrued. She suddenly remembers it was the day of the eclipse. Oh my God no no no please dont let this happen to me. Should she tell Charlie? *** Charlie and Linda sat at the dinner table eating call out Pizza. Every once in a while Linda would glance at Charlie that was enjoying every bit. Once they had finished, Charlie was about to serve dessert when Linda interrupted him. Linda told Charlie what she had remembered earlier this afternoon. Charlie was furious with what he had just heard. He got up from the table and began slowly walking in every direction. I cant believe what I am hearing, no no this cant be happening to us. Charlie said with his hands to his head. Charlie stop, everything will show on the scan. Linda, you have to call Dr. Simsons as soon as possible. Yes, yes Charlie I will, but please calm down.

82

Glenn Gillis:The Field Linda stood up and walked towards Charlie that was looking out the living room window. She took a hold of his arm and then took hold of the other. She gently pulled him towards her and looked Charlie in the eye. Charlie, please dont be like this. He slowly smiled and held her close to him. Im sorry Linda, well be fine. *** September 20 While Mrs. Chass washes dishes and bakes cupcakes, she walks back and forth from the kitchen to the living room to chat with Normand if he needs anything. The fake Normand is getting impatient with her questions and asks for information Mother Chass, I need to contact Linda, please give me the, the, the suddenly Normand is stuttering and his coordination is awkward. Son, are you OK? asks Mrs. Chass The real Normand is fighting back and tries to gain control, but is quickly contained. Im OK mother, he replies with a big smile. Please give me her information now. Well, I will have to ask Helen Beaudoin after supper, she surely must have her number. He looks at the clock on the living room wall, which indicates that it is 4:35pm. He will have to wait another hour. He returns to the couch and stares at the television set again. *** Early the next morning, Linda is in a hurry to meet Dr. Simsons. As she enters the staff locker room, many other nurses are changing into their uniforms. Most of the chatting is coming from Laura Morelli, she suddenly notices Linda. Linda, hi my good friend. Oh geez Linda, youre putting on a little weight I see huh, she says with a wink. Well you were just a little on the thin side, anyway it fits you better Linda, Laura smiles. What is your shift schedule today? she asks. Linda takes off her skirt and hangs it up in her locker. This morning at the lad and this afternoon operation quarters as usual.

83

Glenn Gillis:The Field Before Laura has a chance to talk about her weekend with the family, Linda interrupts her. Laura, I am in a hurry, I will catch you later OK. Laura is almost insulted, but as usual forgives her and goes back to chat with the other nurses. *** Charlie sits behind his desk trying to concentrate on the new software the company is building. Four of his coworkers are also working on the same project and it has to be finished in two weeks, but there is only one thing on Charlies mind now: Lindas scan. What have those bastards done to her? Could they be trying to make hybrids with humans? He desperately hopes that the tests will show positive. *** Linda lies back calmly as Dr. Simsons takes a scan of Lindas abdomen. She looks at his facial expressions, then looks at the monitor. Well Dr.? Linda asks nervously. Well, from what I see, everything looks just fine. Are you sure? Yes Linda, Im 100% sure. By the way, do you want to find out what sex it is? He just said that everything was normal. Ah, pardon me D., what did you just say? Do you want to find out what sex it is. Yes please Dr., she replied excited. Well Linda, you are having a healthy boy. A, a boy, Linda replied with emotion. Congratulations Linda. Thank you Dr. Their experiment didnt work, at least not with me. ***

84

Glenn Gillis:The Field Charlies concentration was better now and the software pieces were all matching. The phone started ringing suddenly and startled him. Hello H-X-Tech can I help you. As he listened to the other person on the phone, a very big smile appeared on his face. Charlie stood up and shouted, Its a boy! Applauds from his co-workers filled the room. As he put down the receiver, he sat down and decompressed. His thoughts were positive. This was the beginning of a new life for both of them, a new departure. The abductions and nightmares were now a thing of the past. They had to celebrate. Charlie was wondering if they should go out for dinner or just have a cozy evening dinner at the apartment. He opted for the second idea. He would stop by for steaks and a good bottle of wine on his way. *** The lights were turned off in the dinning room, only the dim light of three candles performed dancing shadows on every wall. Linda, guess why three candles. Linda smiled knowing what the answer was We will be three soon wont we Charlie. Yes Linda and I propose a toast. As they both approached their glasses, the phone was ringing. Stay right where you are Linda, I will get it. As Charlie answered, a smile appeared on his face. Why; Normand, what a surprise. Linda was smiling as she heard Charlie pronounce his friends name. The conversation lasted nearly half an hour. As Charlie hung up the phone, Linda wanted to know about all the news. So Charlie, what did he say? Well, he seems just fine and he is living with his mother for the moment. And? Well he says he would like to see both of us again and that he has something important he wants to tell us. He seemed a little Charlie was trying to find the exact word. He seemed what Charlie, Linda said rolling her hands in front of her. 85

Glenn Gillis:The Field He was stuttering, Normand never stuttered before. Thats normal Charlie, its been such a while that youve both talked he was nervous. Charlie was still smiling. Linda, we have to go visit him, what do you say this coming weekend Linda approached Charlie with a gentle kiss. That would be fine Charlie. *** September 25 Saturday morning and no clouds in view only clear skies. As usual, the highway was swarming with traffic. Once they passed the skyscrapers, manufactory buildings and publicity signs of the busy city, they finally reached the limit of the city on highway 15 heading towards the serenity of the country. As they reached the Laurentians, the mountains displayed wonderful colors of red, green and yellow. Charlie seemed to be focusing on the road, but actually; his mind was elsewhere. He was thinking of Normand. He couldnt wait to see him again, but something was troubling him, he was wondering what it was that he had to say to both of them that was so important. Linda observed Charlie as he was driving and knew he had his mind on something else. Charlie, keep your mind on the road. Huh. he replied with an innocent expression. I said keep your mind on the road, I could tell you are thinking of something else. Before he could say a word, she interrupted him. Youre wondering why he wants to see us huh. Linda knew Charlie like reading a book. Linda do you think he knows anything? Well, he also was abducted just like us. Do you think Transplants, could be, but I sure hope not. Replied Linda with a worried expression. *** After eight hours, they finally entered the Cardinals driveway; Jennifer Cardinal was there to greet them both. Linda hurried to hug her mother while Charlie took care of their luggage. Im so happy to see you honey. Said Jennifer hugging her daughter. 86

Glenn Gillis:The Field As Charlie approached the front door, Jennifer also gave Charlie a hug. Waite Charlie, let me help you with those, you two must be completely exhausted after such a long ride. Wheres dad mom. Your father will be here any minute; he went to buy some T-bones. Oh great, Im starving. An hour later, everyone was sitting in the back patio enjoying a scrumptious meal. Charlie and Jessie Cardinal were drinking cold beer while Linda and her mother preferred red wine. So Charlie; hows work. Asked Jessie Well, very good as a matter of fact, we just finished the last touches on Star City which is a new software game weve been working on for the past few weeks. Although Jessie had no idea what software was, he acted interested. Great Charlie; seems interesting. My goodness! exclaimed Jennifer lifting her glass of wine. We are going to be grandparents soon Jessie can you believe it. Yes, I am very proud indeed. Jessie answered. This owes a toast. Jennifer said with her glass of wine held up. Their friendly conversation went on all through the evening meal. After the sun gave its last appearance, it was getting chilly, so everyone moved inside. Charlie, Alan should be getting home soon, you should ask him to come over. Suddenly Jennifer interrupted their conversation. Charlie, you are asked on the phone. Normand was trembling; he was fighting hard to gain control of his body. Huh, hi Chaaaaarrrrlie, its . . . Me Nor-maned. Charlie found Normands voice to be very strange. Normand, are you OK? Although Normand tried his best, it was no use. Why of course Im OK Charlie, Im just a little emotional, its been a while Charlie. Charlie, we have to see each other again. Why sure Normand, thats why we came down, I will stop by your place tonight with Linda and No no, Charlie, what do you say we meet at the field, Ive got something important to tell both of you, lets say 8pm. Charlie was wondering why he insisted they meet up by the old field, he didnt particularly like the place, but if it was important. 87

Glenn Gillis:The Field OK Normand buddy, see you at eight. Normand hung up the phone, stood up and looked around. Mrs. Chass was lying unconscious on the floor; he would have to tie her up like Mr Chass. *** The field was obscure. No one would have had the slightest idea what was about to happen. The large craft was immobilized and well hidden within the forest. The invaders were impatient. They made strange noises to communicate. Their plan must not fail this time. For centuries, they have tried different experiences without success, but this time they think they just might have found a way by capturing what the humans possess and that is their inner energy they call the sprite. The unborn that the female is carrying could be the rise of their new spices. There is one problem, they can only possess their human bait, the others are no longer under their control, and they will have to be re-stabilized. *** Normand stood close to the invaders waiting for Charlie and Linda to arrive. Every once in a while, he would struggle to gain control, but the invaders would take notice and calm him down with hypnotism communicated through the control mechanism attached in the back of his neck, which connects directly to the brain. They still cannot figure out how the other humans have succeeded in neutralizing their control mechanism, this was not supposed to happen; they will have to make new improvements. *** Alice sat behind her desk studying the new teaser gun that they had received two weeks ago. They all have been trained how to use them. This new method could indeed save the life of a person that is a threat and people like those, she has seen many. She attaches the Taser gun to her belt and is about to do her nightly round when the phone rings. She picks up. The caller tells her that she has just seen a strange light land in the old baseball field about fifteen minutes ago. The old baseball field suddenly rings a bell. The mysterious disappearances. OK miss, well check into it.

88

Glenn Gillis:The Field As Charlie and Linda drove up towards the field, they both had bad memories and a bad feeling about this. Charlie, why does Normand want to meet us there for all places? I dont know Linda, but it sure sounded important, maybe he remembers something he wants to tell us. But couldnt he just invite us at his place and talk to us there? Dont ask Linda, anyway well find out soon enough. The invaders stood hidden a little ways behind Normand. They were impatient. Suddenly lights were approaching. Normand was holding a knife in his right hand. Once they arrived, Charlie parked the car and both got out. They looked around, suddenly Normand appeared. Normand was trying desperately to gain control. Helloooooo Ouch Charlie, Hello Linda. They were both pleased to see him. As they approached, Normand lifted his right hand. They both noticed he was holding a knife and stopped. Normand, what are you doing man, Charlie said nervously. Suddenly they noticed fast shadowy movement around them. As Alice got closer to the field, she noticed something strange was happening. She put out her headlights, parked the car and walked towards the field. Normand, put down that knife. Charlie shouted. Normand was making strange movements, putting down the knife then lifting it up again. I, I cant HELP MEEEEEEEEEEE! Linda then noticed the little creatures close by and she was in panic. Those large black eyes staring, both of them. Alice could see what was happening. She slowly approached. She also noticed that one of the little creatures also noticed her. She took her gun and fired at it, but it was fast enough to elude the bullets. She fired at it again. Suddenly it stopped and fell. She took out her Taser gun and pointed it at Normand. Put down the knife son. Normand approached closer and was about to stab Charlie. Alice used her Taser on him and he fell to the ground shaking and yelling in pain. One of the invaders picked up the wounded one and disappeared into the forest. Charlie and Linda knelt down beside Normand. Alice removed the stun darts. Normand, Normand, are you OK. Charlie asked in panic. Normand slowly turned his head and looked at both of them kneeling beside him. 89

Glenn Gillis:The Field Yes Im OK now. Charlie puts his hand in the back of Normands neck and noticed a large scar. Suddenly a loud humming noise was coming from the forest at the end of the field. The huge silvery sphere slowly lifted into the air revolving. Vents detached from the sides of the large object moving like fish gills. All four were almost blinded by the glow of the object. The sphere began its movement upwards and without any making any noise suddenly disappeared in mid air. It doesnt have any control over me now. Normand said. Alice called for an ambulance. She looked at them and said: How will I explain all of this. *** August 5th, 2000 On a pleasant Saturday afternoon, friends and family have been invited in the backyard patio to celebrate little six-year-old Ashley Beaudion. Normand Chass takes a beer from the cooler filled with ice, walks over to the large table filled with hors-doeuvers and goes to sit beside his old friends Linda and Charlie Beaudoin. Can you believe that Ashley will be starting school next month. Yes, shes so adorable. Linda replies, looking at her daughter playing with the little puppy they got her. I will drink to that. Charlie exclaims. Suddenly Ashley walks to her parents with the puppy in her arms. Can I bring Cody up to my room. Linda looks at her daughter and smiles. Sure honey, but dont be too long, we will be blowing out the candles soon. Ashley runs up to her room with the little puppy in her arms. She deposits the dog on her bed. Cody, you have to be quiet now, I have something very important to do. The little girl takes out one of her brushes and beginnings to brush her long blond hair. While looking at herself in the mirror she repeats: Change now, change now. Suddenly her beautiful blue eyes change to a very dark black. Now she is smiling. END.
