Church
he history of humanity teaches us that human mobility is a universal phenomenon of all ages. He moves in search of new goals, from the imperfect to the perfect, and from inadequacy to sufficiency. Hence migration has become a symbol of the existence of man. The Bible is basically the history of man on the move. It was hunger that first forced the Hebrews to migrate to Egypt (Gen 12:10). The exodus of Israelites proves that migration from one place to another in search of better life situation is to be seen in accordance with the plan of God. As Christians we are followers of a man on the move who had nowhere to lay his head (Mt. 8:20). Church envisages the whole Christian life not merely as a migration but rather as a pilgrimage. Church is a pilgrim community here on earth.

Human Mobility and the Concerns


Migration on an unprecedented scale is taking place all over the world. Many nations, in fact, would not be what they are today without the contribution made by millions of immigrants (Erga migrantes, No. 5). In the context of India, especially that of urban areas, migration is a significant reality. Indian cities have witnessed increasing presence of migrant Christians. The life of these migrant Christians is exposed to many problems and difficulties in the new sociocultural atmosphere. Migration has many implications due to demographic, religious, political, cultural and economic changes. The Church, sign and instrument of unity among people, has been closely involved and has pondered over the demands of the migration. From the ecclesial perspective, migration invites special pastoral care in the field of ritual, liturgical, cultural, social fields. The Church is to be instrumental among the migrants for the promotion of human dignity, human identity and universal communion. There are numerous families who have settled down in different cities of India and abroad. Usually the first generation of the migrant

families is reluctant to go to the local parish community except perhaps for an occasional Mass and services such as those in Lent or Christmas season. They may not have much contact with the local parish either. Language and culture are big barriers because most of these migrants often have very little knowledge of English or the local language. The fear whether they will be accepted by the local community also distances them from the local community. Financial situation also may be a hindrance to their integration in the local community. Many may be getting just enough money or barely enough to make both ends meet. Such people may not be able to give much to the parish by way of monetary contribution. Difference in liturgical celebrations and pastoral style of the parish priest also work as a great hindrance for many to integrate themselves to the local Catholic community. Even the reception of sacraments becomes difficult because many are not able to make their confessions in English or in the local language. There are several thousands of students belonging to SyroMalabar Church pursuing various courses in institutions run by

Catholic as well as non-Catholic agencies in the big cities. The number of employed bachelors also is big in these cities. Since they have come for studies or for temporary work, and will go back after a few years, they dont take interest in learning the language of the place nor do they get integrated into the local community. Most of them will like to be anonymous and would not live their faith unless they get proper attention in their own language and tradition. In many a case the non-Christian authorities of the educational institutions in which they study will not allow them to go out for religious services. Therefore the local Church authorities will have to take special interest and contact the educational institutions for permission. The overburdened pastors of the Latin Church who do not have much interest in these youngsters may not be in a position to undertake such ministries. This is the case in most of the metro cities of India, and

in the cities abroad. It is needless to say that Churches have the duty to give due pastoral care to their faithful wherever they are. It is urgent because the slower the pace of action the more the time required to bring them back to the consciousness of the identity as belonging to an Oriental Church. The first generation migrants who are uprooted from their cultural and geographical background are totally estranged in the local situation. They often become anonymous in the large majority of the faithful of other Churches who surround them. That may lead them even to the loss of faith. Some, on the other hand may join non-Catholic communities because they are influenced very much by them. The second generation of these migrants may not even have the awareness that they once belonged to another sui iuris Church. The reality that the faith dies out if proper care is not given for the

nourishment of faith life of the migrants in their unfamiliar situations has motivated the Church to be actively involved in pastoral care of her children. The lack of proper pastoral care for the migrants has several consequences such as: the loss of sense of oneness with the Mother Church, lack of proper liturgical life, lack of proper religious instruction, a feeling of isolation from the rest of the community and steep decline of priestly and religious vocations. Hence the pastoral care within the same country or abroad has been one of the growing concerns of the different churches both Catholic and Non-catholic, in the modern times. Let us all bear in mind that pastoral care and evangelization are also co-related. When we think about the spread of Syro-Malabar Church, we understand that often it is the Syro-Malabar migrants who paved the way also for evangelization work of the Church. Priests followed the migrants to their places for pastoral work. Wherever there were the presence of the members of our Church we adopted also as fields of evangelization. So the migrants of our Church can be considered as the first missionaries of our Church. Migration necessitates the pastoral ministry and together with it, it helps our Church to spread our missionary activities. Thus the migration of the SyroMalabar faithful to different parts of the world offers our Church new prospects and new challenges to work for the spread of the Kingdom of God.

But lack of job opportunities there, may be considered a blessing in disguise, has paved the way for the global migration. The presence of Keralites is felt in every part of the globe. The Marthoma Christians, sociologically a very outgoing community among the other Indian communities, did not have any difficulty to get settled in various corners of the globe. This was the reason for the

Rather even in the search for basic needs of the body, divine intervention is sought. This phenomenon existed in the history of humanity from time immemorial. growth of the Syro-Malabar Church which was confined mainly to the Kerala territories to grow to a global Church in 20th and 21st centuries. This generation is blessed to see and enjoy its growth, to be a global one. Reaching Mumbai, Pune, Nasik cities empty handed and with no one to contact, the stories of the first migrants were not that great. But with hard work, they started earning their livelihood. They did not neglect their spiritual life which was deeply rooted in their very being. The existing Latin Diocese of that time, Bombay Archdiocese and Pune Diocese opened their arms to welcome the migrants and later appointed chaplains for the special pastoral care within the limitations. Also in view of taking care of some spiritual needs of the migrants, the faithful under their own initiative started new associations such as Kerala Catholic Association in Bombay and St. Thomas Catholics of India in Pune. The migrants were able to set apart their might for the spiritual needs as well as for some infrastructures. For the migrant Syro-Malabar

Catholics, the Church was a zero Church in all senses. Many migrant faithful did not know even to spell the name of the Church. They neither had bishop, nor priests, sisters, seminarians. There were no churches or other infrastructure. At this juncture, in 1978, Mar Antony Padiyara was appointed Apostolic Visitor to study the situation of the migrant Syro-Malabar Catholics. He reached Mumbai, conducted 18 meetings from 4th to 18th February 1979 and a report was submitted in 1980. After lengthy discussions in Vatican, CBCI, SMBC on 30th April 1988, the Kalyan Eparchy was erected. Immediately after the inauguration of the Eparchy, in order to cater to the spiritual needs of the faithful, priests were appointed who came from various dioceses of the mother Church as well as the religious congregations. The new eparchy tried to pave strong foundations for its pastoral development. Keeping the same territory of the Latin parishes, the new Eparchy also tried to organize pastoral activities for the SyroMalabar faithful with the help of the existing Latin Churches and dioceses. Some priests and

seminarians ascribed to the new eparchy in the early years. In order to make sure of the Christians presence and service in all 15 districts of the Eparchy, 10 of them were entrusted to MST, VC, MCBS and CMI religious congregations. Many religious women came forward to start educational and other social charitable institutions and to assist in the pastoral work. The faithful wholeheartedly accepted the new set up with lots of enthusiasm though there were a few incidents of initial troubles. A minority of the faithful even objected to its establishment and growth. Long Holy Qurbana, new ecclesial set up, financial burdens to maintain parishes and priests and the frightening face of the zero church were enough for them to raise their eyebrow(s). part of Latin communities was more painful than the bifurcation of the diocese in ecclesiastical level. But the lay persons, who were thirsty for spiritual nourishments, accepted all the initial sufferings joyfully with the great hope of having the ultimate joy and reward. The faithful were really generous in their contribution to the needs of the church. Now they are proud to be part of it. The liturgical celebrations are now moments of spiritual nourishment and source of strength. All the more, coming together and standing strong as an ecclesial community with some special identity has become part and parcel of life. The family prayer, a strong tradition of the mother church is practiced in the metropolis in spite of the day-to-day difficulties. The activities of Youth, Sunday Catechism, Mathrusangam, Pithruvedi, Kalyan Kumbakoottayma, Social Action department, Charismatic groups, etc. are going on in full swing.

The zero church has grown to a Syro Church. The bifurcation did not attach to it any structural, financial shares. It was to begin from the scratch. Now, in 169 places, Sunday liturgy is celebrated; that too in 80% in own small or big structures. Now the Eparchy has 64 ascribed and 6 other diocesan priests work zealously in the pastoral, social, charitable, education, health care and mission fields. 5 men religious congregations with their 120 priests and 375 sisters from 32 congregations in 82 convents serve in pastoral, educational, health care and other charitable fields. 66 seminarians are in various stages of formation. 50 schools and about 50 other educational institutions, 25 boardings and hostels, 15 other social charitable institutions and 3 seminaries are some of the institutions through which divine love to the humanity is witnessed. Apart from Malayalam, liturgy is celebrated in Hindi, English and Marathi. In 15 districts of Maharashtra, Kalyan has jurisdiction in 145,000 sq.

kms. The Kalyan Eparchy caters to the spiritual needs of around 1 lakh Syro-Malabar faithful and more than one crore other faithful benefits one way or the other. The mother Church can be proud of its growth as Kalyan stood together with it, in the implementation of all its decisions. Other Ecclesial and ecumenical relations are fostered. Strong bond is created as a small minority community in these vast cities. Universality was upheld strong in all respects to the Pope and his offices, practicing all the directions and instructions. The prime duty of evangelization is taken with due seriousness. The Eparchy of Kalyan which has been going ahead from strength to strength as proud Catholics and as deep rooted Syro-Malabarians inculturated in the soil of Maharashtra now deservingly stand at the threshold of its silver Jubilee celebrations!

God has revealed His will to His people in various ways at various times. Redemption of mankind is accomplished by His son Jesus Christ who was the pure and sublime manifestation of His will. Therefore to obey His son means to obey the Father and to obey the Father means to obey His commandments, which is the person of Christ Himself. To enter the kingdom of the Father one must keep the commandments. God is the supreme God and the source of all good. Jesus too shares in the supreme goodness of the Father. Therefore Jesus is the commandment. Hence one is obliged to love the Lord his God with all his heart, with all his soul, with all his might and with all his strength. To obey the commandments means to care for the neighbor. That is why one should not kill, commit adultery; steal and bear false witness. One must honor his/her father and mother. (Mt 19:16-19) Following Jesus involves keeping His commandments. Following Jesus closely will finally lead us to sanctity of life and the perfection of the Father. Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect is the exhortation of Jesus. But to be perfect one must sell all that he/she has and give to the poor. This is a prerequisite for us to follow Jesus and also to enter the kingdom of heaven. (cf Mt 19:21) Christian life involves keeping the commandments. Jesus has not abolished the law (cf Mt 5:17). Jesus is the perfect fulfillment of every minute law. For not even a letter of the law shall be removed but fulfilled in him. The power of the spirit is at work in the words of the law and the law of the Word. The words of the law are contained in the sacred scripture. The law is contained in the person of the Word i.e., Jesus Himself. Hence the one who hears the word and practices it will become worthy of the kingdom of God. Our righteousness must therefore exceed that of the scribes, pharisees and the gentiles. (Mt 5:20:46-47). The righteousness of the Pharisees has been limited to the external law. The righteousness of the people of God consists in loving the Lord their God with their whole heart, mind, soul and body and loving their neighbors as themselves (Cf Mt 22:37-40, Deut 6:5, Lev 19:18). All the law and the prophets can be concluded in this one message. Fulfillment of the law is keeping the commandments of love. Love is the fulfillment of the law. (Rom 28:9-10) The Ten Commandments place before us the fundamental duties towards God and towards our neighbors. There is a grave obligation to obey these rules which are oriented towards our redemption. Since they are engraved on human hearts they are immutable and oblige always and everywhere. RECONCILED
The Command of Christ at Last Supper do this in memory of me (1 Cor 11:25) reminds us that our Qurbana is in fulfillment of His command. Besides, it reminds us of other commands given by Christ in relation to the Eucharist. Jesus said, Where two or three are gathered together in my name I am there among them (Mt 18:20). The hymn let us gather in His holy Name reminds us that it is His love that brings us together around the altar. Therefore, love, unity and forgiveness are indispensable elements of the Holy Qurbana. Whenever we gather in His name there is the presence of the living God among us. Church is a community gathered together in His holy Name to offer Qurbana in unity and love. As the Fathers of the church teach us, it is the church that makes the Eucharist and the Eucharist that makes the church. Through the sacrifice of the cross Jesus brought together the

scattered children of God. Church is the people of God gathered together by the Holy Spirit in the name of Christ to worship the Father. Jesus has taught us that first we must be reconciled with our brothers and sisters and then come and offer our gifts on the altar (Mt 5: 23-24). We are reminded of it as we sing let us be reconciled and prepare a new altar. A new altar is the reconciled heart where God dwells and it is there that the Qurbana becomes real. Through the sacrifice on the cross, Jesus reconciled us to God the Father (Eph 2:16). As the prodigal son got reconciled with his father, the father prepared a banquet for him. (Lk 15:23). Holy Qurbana is the celebration of our reconciliation with God and an invitation to get reconciled with one another. When Jesus prepared a meal for the disciples on the shores of Galilee, he told them to bring some of the fish that they had just caught (Jn 21: 13). Even today He is inviting each of us to bring at His feet the fruits of our toil. Remaining in His love one should offer the sacrifice. Love comes from reconciliation and forgiveness. It is the love of God that should motivate us to offer a new sacrifice. Everyone who is in the state of sin shall experience liberation only through the sacrament of reconciliation. Even if children fell into temptations once in a while, parents could easily spot the mistakes and correct them in time. But today, the situation has dramatically changed. The temptations have moved into the personal space of the kids. Today temptations are coming in from the same mobile phone they use to keep in touch with their parents, the Internet they need to use for their academic work. Today's children are being exposed to these temptations at a much earlier age. Studies have shown that one in three children is exposed to pornographic content before the age of ten.

How will parents deal with this situation? The traditional way of dealing with these temptations was to deny physical access to these sources of temptations. In the past it was easy to block access to the sources of temptations because they were in the public space. But today the same tactic will not work. Children who go to school need not possess a mobile phone. But even if parents rightfully deny their kids a mobile phone, they have access to their friend's and relatives' mobile phone. Internet too is easily available. It is often said that 'true character is what you are in the dark'. For the first time we have to build a generation who have to be fully live up to these words. Today in many homes both parents are working. Most of the homes have

only single child. Most of the kids do not spend time on outdoor sports with other friends. So today's child is a loner, with lot of time to spend in his privacy. How do they spend these private moments with all the modern gadgets at their disposal? Today's parents have many new questions about their 'job' of parenting for which the answers from the previous generation might not be of much help. To build a new generation with strong moral values, parents surely need new sources to provide new answers. are reservoirs of strength and brain. There is no doubt that todays young generation is perhaps the smartest of all time youth, especially in much technological advancement. Some of our youth, the way they carry themselves, the professionalism, the fine balance between work, fun and faith, their display is admirable. Not only do they work hard but also work smart. Pope Paul VI years ahead had said, Human society is sorely ill. The cause is not so much the depletion of natural resources, nor their monopolistic control by a privileged few; it is rather the weakening of brotherly ties between individuals and nations (PopulorumProgressio, 66). Our efforts to bring the youth together will be geared to develop in them the art of Christian loving. To go

to those who are suffering and those who are searching, and to give them the joy that Jesus wants to bestow. Unfortunately the elders often criticize the youth ministry for being heavy on fun and light on faith. Its fired up entertainment and watered down gospel. But we need to strike a balance between them. And so through creative, youthful prayer sessions and youth catechesis we look forward to successfully compete with the world and time of our youth. For it is a crucial time to continue planting those seeds of Gods Word into their lives as the KEY Army 4 Christ will precisely help us do that. There is also a danger, todays generation is more worldy than previous ones. They know more, and at an earlier age. They have so much information so easily accessible. For all the new things they know, there are a lot of things they do not know that previous generations would have considered common knowledge. The ministry for the youth must aim to develop the personality of youngsters. To have firm faith,

determination and confidence in oneself and to be sure of their decision, so that they will put their best efforts to achieve their goal and then nothing can stop them from stepping the stairs of success. Often youth ministry is seen only as a means to attract and sustain the youth within the Church. But it is much more; in fact it aims at the holistic development of our young friends. These are the dreams that one should see for the youth of our diocese. It seems an uphill task, but somebody has to plunge to lead our youngsters. St Thrse of Lisieux lived in this world for only 24 years leading a very simple and hidden life but, after her death and the publication of her writings, she became one of the best-known and best-loved saints. Little Thrse continues to help the simplest, little, poor and the suffering souls who pray to her. She illumined the whole Church with her profound spiritual doctrine to the point that Blessed John Paul II chose, in 1997, to give her the title Doctor of the Church, in addition to that of Patroness of Missions, which Pius XI had already attributed to her in 1939. Blessed John Paul II described her as an expert in the scientia amoris (science of love). Thrse expressed this science in the story of her life, published a year after her death with the title The Story of a Soul. The book immediately met with enormous success, it was translated into many languages and disseminated throughout the world. The Story of a Soul is a marvelous story of Love, told with such authenticity, simplicity and freshness that the reader cannot but be fascinated by it! But what was this Love that filled Thrses whole life, from childhood to death? As Pope Benedict XVI puts it, this Love has a Face, it has a Name, it is Jesus! The Saint speaks continuously of Jesus. Her religious profession, on the Feast of the Nativity of Mary, 8th September 1890, she told, What a beautiful feast on which to become the Spouse of Jesus! It was the little new-born Holy Virgin who presented her little Flower to the little Jesus. For her, being a religious meant being a bride of Jesus and a mother of souls. Thrse died on the evening of 30th September 1897, saying, My God, I love you!, looking at the Crucifix she held tightly in her hands. These last words were the continuous breathing of her soul, the beating of her heart. The simple words Jesus I love you, are at the heart of all her writings. In her last Letter, on an image that represents Jesus the Child in the consecrated Host, the Saint wrote these simple words: I cannot fear a God who made himself so small for me! I love him! St. Raphael is an angel of God who is cited in the Bible. In the Book of Tobit, he is mentioned as having assisted Tobias (Tobits son) on his travels to Media. Tobit is described as a man of good faith who suffered from blindness and poverty. He sent his son, Tobias, to a distant city to collect money he had deposited there, and hired a companion to accompany the youth. The companion was actually the archangel Raphael in disguise. Their journey was successful: not only was the money recovered, but a medicine made from a monstrous fish Tobias encountered along the way cured Tobit's blindness. For this reason, St. Raphael is called upon to protect all travelers on their journeys.
(Here we may include the prayer which we say when we set out a journey, in which St Raphaels name is there. This short prayer is there in the prayer book published by St. Pauls.)

George Rajendran SDB for Thuckalay and Mgr. Jacob Muricken as the Auxiliary Bishop of Palai. The XX Synod (2012), Session 3 of the Bishops of the Syro-Malabar Church assembled at Mount St. Thomas elected them and the Major Archbishop through his decrees, appointed them. They had received the prior assent of the Holy Father. The See of Thuckalay fell vacant when Mar George Alencherry assumed office as the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church on 9 May 2011. Fr. George Rajendran, is the second Bishop of Thuckalay. He was born on 14 April 1968 in the parish of Padanthalumoodu, of the Eparchy of Thuckalay. He was ordained a Salesian priest on 29-12-2003. Presently he serves as the Vice Rector of the Minor Seminary and Principal of St. Anthonys Higher Secondary School at Shillong. He has degrees of I.T.I (Electronics), B.Sc., M.A. (Education), B. Ed. and M. Ed. He knows English, Tamil and Malayalam. On 16th September he is Consecrated a Bishop. Mgr. Jacob Muricken belonged to Muttuchira Parish where St. Alphonsa grew up. He was born on 16-6-1963 to the family of the Saint. He has M.A. in economics. After his ordination in 27-12-1993, he served as Asst. Vicar, Vice Rector of Minor Seminary, Professor at Good Shepherd Minor Seminary, Secretary to the Corporate Management of Schools and Parish Priest. At present he is the Pastoral Co-ordinator of the Eparchy. The new Auxiliary of Palai is assigned the titular See of TINIS by the Apostolic See. On 1st October he is Consecrated a Bishop.

The Israeli Government would sponsor the Holy Land pilgrimage of some poor Christians from West Bengal starting this November. The Consul General of Israel in Kolkata Harsh Neotia informed this to vice-chairperson of Minorities Commission in the state Maria Fernandes, according to Archdiocesan catholic paper The Herald. Fernandes said that an ecumenical committee has been formed to felicitate the sponsored pilgrimage. The maiden trip on Nov. 14th will have 25 pilgrims, who would be required to pay 66,000 rupees for a five-day trip to the Holy Land. Another 25 pilgrims sponsored by the Consul General will travel with them.
