How much time do you spend on Social Network Site (SNS)? We are living in 21 st century, generation of technology.

Most of students in the United States have some kinds of technology-electronic devices such as smart phone, computer, and laptop. As technology is developing, students are spending more time on their electronic devices. As technology developed, the SNS developed together. There are many SNS like Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr. These SNS are very easy to access and easy to use. People can communicate people who know or does not know. There are also many attractions and games in SNS sites. Students spent too much time on SNS (Facebook), SNS gave negative impacts on student academic, physical, and emotional abilities. According to University of California, Berkley, SNS is a site that can construct public or semi-public profile, share with users who have same connections and view the list of users in same site. It is also fast growing social media. SNS has main six functions, which are identity management, expert finding, context awareness, contact management, network awareness, and exchange (Alexander Richter, Michael Koch. Functions of Social Networking Services. Cooperation Systems Center Munich (CSCM) Bundeswehr University. Web. April 24, 2013). All of these functions are begin with creating profile. SNS also offers entertainment such as online games. These factors are attracting teenagers and other users in to SNS world. One of the main negative effects is academic disturbance. Since the students spending too much time on Facebook, they spend less time on developing their academic abilities. According to the survey conducted by some people argue that SNS does not directly harm students academic abilities; however, SNS is a big distractor, the contexts and games of SNS

attract students to spend lots of time on it. People might think SNS have many helpful contexts and I do agree with that. But student is not amateur enough to find out helpful information in harmful information. .According to survey conducted by Pew Research Centers Internet & American Life Project, 95% of teenagers go on online and 80% of them have access to SNS and have account (Rainie, Lee. "Teens, Kindness and Cruelty on Social Network Sites". Nov. 09, 2011. Pew Research Center's Internet& American Life Project. Web. March. 05, 2013.). Americans are spending about 7 hours and 30 minutes per year according to Nielsons March 2012 report. This rate has been increased due to development of mobile SNS applications. Students now days can easily access to SNS anytime and anywhere. That cause problem of smart phone in school. Guam Department of Education (GDOE) has established Guam Cell Phone Policy, because there were many incidents students go on their SNS in their class and that distracted students academic ability and class. SNS effects students academic ability as well as their reputation as students. Jeff Cain mentioned in his journal Posting inappropriate contexts and pictures build bad reputation as student and that effect in school life (Cain, Jeff "Online Social Networking Issues Within Academia and Pharmacy Education" Feb. 15,2008. US National Library of Medicine/ National Institute of Health. Web. March 05, 2013.)
