Homestay Dept. (Building #4, 3 floor) ILAC offers this optional service to students who want to live with a Canadian family while they are studying at our school. Your homestay provides you with a first-hand experience of Canadian home life and is a good place for you to practice your English. Despite the cultural differences you may come across in your new temporary home in Canada, try to be open-minded about these differences. Both your host family and you can learn a lot from each other. If you have any problem concerning your homestay, contact the Homestay Coordinator of our campus. As we also appreciate your feedback about this part of our services and we encourage you to fill out the homestay evaluation form after you have been with your family for a week. We are interested in knowing your opinion about where you are staying. It is important to us because it will help the Homestay Coordinator monitor and improve the homestays that we provide to our students. Please fill out the homestay evaluation form after you have been with your family for a week and have had a chance to settle into your home. Please be kind to your host family and respect their rules. Some of the basic things you must have in mind are the following: - You are responsible for paying for any long distance calls that you make. Please buy a long distance phone card like those we sell at the Activities Department. - No guests are allowed to stay overnight, unless your host family gives you authorization for that. Please ask your host family first before making arrangements. - Host families usually eat dinner at a specific time every day and they might expect you to join them. If you are not planning to be back home before dinner, please call to inform them. - Do not pay the family for your homestay. Make your payment to ILAC only and then ILAC and the Homestay Department will pay the family! Payments are made at the front desk with the Homestay Coordinator. Each homestay payment covers 4 weeks of accommodation and meals. Please make your homestay payments to the ILAC Homestay Coordinator at least 2 weeks before the end of the current 4 weeks session. This guarantees that your room is reserved for you. - If you are moving out of your homestay, you must give at least 2 weeks written notice to ILAC before you move out. The first 4 weeks of homestay are non-refundable. - You are expected to leave your homestay as soon as you complete your study at ILAC. If you wish to stay longer, please see the Homestay Coordinator immediately to inform them of your departure date. Extra nights of homestay after your scheduled period are charged on a daily basis. For more information, please contact amontilla@ilac.com.

Student Policy book This short guide book has been created to remind you of the essential rules that all students should follow in order to maintain a respectful and peaceful environment at our school. We are glad to count on your cooperation and we will also be happy to get your feedback during and after your stay at our campus. At ILAC we have an open door policy, which means you are welcome to come and talk to the Executive Directors whenever they are free to talk. If no one is available at the time you wish to see them, please make an th appointment with the ILAC staff at the front desk (4 floor). Our International Counselors are also here to make sure you have a great time in Canada.

Passing levels ILAC has 17levels from Introduction to English to High Advanced English. Each level is based on a 4-week cycle, with Cambridge tests in the second and fourth weeks. Students must achieve a minimum score specific for each level on their tests and have a high level of attendance in their classes including electives - to pass to the next level. If students fail, they will remain in the same level for further practice and ESL skills development.

Class changes Class changes can be made depending on the availability in other classes. If you wish to make changes to your main classes, you should take a Change of Class Request form beside the Director of Studies office. After you fill it out and attach it to your schedule, leave it in the collection tray. Class changes can be requested every week between 2pm. Wednesday and 3:00 p.m Friday. These changes will be processed as soon as possible. Changes to your schedule will be made where possible by the Director of Studies at the time of request. Program changes Students wanting to change their program must speak to an International Counselor. It is the students responsibility to know what program they are registered in including all lessons, times of classes and duration of program. It indicates the total number of lessons you studied per week, the length of your study, results and attendance. Please request this through an International Counselor. Requests should be made at least 48 hours in advance. Respect each other At ILAC everybody should respect each other - considering the differences of nationalities, preferences, religions and opinions. Please be kind to your classmates, homestay family, teachers and other staff members. If you ever feel bad about being mistreated, harassed or bullied by anybody at ILAC or elsewhere, please let us know immediately

Only English Students must speak English at all times at ILAC. If you speak English all the time, you may get green cards and win prizes. If you do not, you may get yellow cards. The first yellow card means youll have a meeting with an English Only Policy (EOP) Counselor. The second yellow card will lead you to a 1-day suspension. An eventual third yellow card will lead you to further suspensions from ILAC with no compensation for missed classes. Students responsibilities and participation You can maximize the classroom instruction you receive at ILAC through your cooperation and active participation in and out of class. One way of doing this is by taking advantage of the varied resources and programs offered by ILAC. ILAC has computers that you can use for additional practice of class material. Along with these resources, the school offers a wide variety of extra-curricular activities and services. Your class at ILAC is the first step in learning to speak, read, and write in English. Your instructor will present and explain certain grammar structures and vocabulary in class. Your cooperation is needed to help make the classroom experience productive and pleasant. Your instructor will use only English in class. Speaking your native language in class will only slow down your learning, especially at the lower levels. Remember: if you, your classmates, and your teacher work together as a team, your class time will be very productive. Academic integrity International Language Academy of Canada is committed to a high standard of academic integrity in the academic community. In becoming a part of the academic community, you are responsible for honesty and independent effort. Failure to uphold these standards includes, but is not limited to, the following: plagiarizing written work or projects, cheating on exams or assignments, collusion on an exam or project. Plagiarism includes submitting a paper, report, or project that someone else has prepared, in whole or in part. Collusion means inappropriately collaborating on assignments designed to be completed independently. Your teacher will talk about these guidelines in class

Student Handbook Toronto, 2013

Be on time ILAC teachers only tolerate from 0 to 10 minutes of delay after classes start. Beyond that point, classes cannot be interrupted by students arriving late. - Students cannot enter their morning classes more than 10 minutes after they begin. - Students cannot be late from the break. - Students cannot enter the elective or super-intensive classes more than 5 minutes after they begin. Attendance ILAC teachers will keep a record of your class attendance each day. To pass the course, students must attend class regularly and complete all assignments. Missed tests and incomplete assignments will be counted as zero unless arrangements have been made in advance. Because it is so important for you and your classmates learning, it is essential that you come to class every day, on time. If you are more than ten minutes late to class, you will be marked late and you will have to wait until the next session begins. This will count as a partial absence. If all students are on time, learning begins, and no ones time is wasted. Regular absences will result in a lower certificate being issued and repetition of the same level. Students involved in extracurricular activities must be in attendance and on time of that event. The only exception to this rule would be a medical appointment with an accompanying note from the doctor. Smoking is strictly prohibited at ILAC. Smoking is prohibited in all public buildings, elevators, lobbies, stairwells, shopping malls, cinemas, restaurants and sports facilities unless a sign says that you may smoke. Smokers are required to stand outside a building 9-12 feet from main entrances or on the roadside away frompublic access. If you are blocking the main entrance to the ILAC building whether you are smoking or not, you will be asked to move. Remember that only people who are 19 years or older are allowed buying cigarettes, as well as alcoholic beverages in Canada Use the stairs Since there are many other offices and people in the Main Building, we appreciate your selfjudgment and cooperation in taking the stairs instead of the elevators. Sometimes, ILAC staff will direct you to use the stairs.

No loitering Anti-loitering policy Loitering by students in the front of ILAC buildings is not permitted at any time. Hanging out in front of any ILAC building is not permitted Students may pass through these areas briefly while going to and from school but may not loiter in these areas. During break times and after classes students are allowed to hang out only in the areas designated on the campus map . Please do not block the sidewalk or the entrance to the main building. People need to be able to enter the building and pass on the sidewalk.

Respect for School Property Vandalism in any form will not be tolerated and is punishable by suspension. Students found guilty will have to pay for any damages and replacement costs. WRITING ON WALLS, desks, tables, chairs or in elevators and washrooms, etc, is considered vandalism. Student Integrity When walking on the sidewalks, stay to the right so others can pass. Leave and enter the class quietly, as other classes are in session. Dropping, throwing, spitting things on the school property or the sidewalls is not allowed by law. Use the bathroom quickly and quietly. (No loitering in the bathroom.) DO access the second and third floor only via the stairway. Loitering (hanging out) is not permitted in and around the lobby and front of the Main building; students can hang out only at the areas designated on the campus map. Students will be responsible to pay for any damage they may cause to school property and/or personal property. Illicit drugs Drugs are not tolerated and are taken very seriously in Canada. Getting caught under the influence or in the possession of any illegal drugs will result in the immediate contact of police and notification of your parents or guardian (where applicable). You may be fined, arrested, jailed (if convicted) and/or deported from Canada. At ILAC or in your homestay, any use of drugs will result in immediate suspension or expulsion. Other consequences may apply with no refund of fees. Respect for Community Please show respect for our neighbors. Please do not block the sidewalk or the entrance to the buildings. People need to be able to enter the building and pass on the sidewalk.

Fire alarm Students may only activate the alarm if they see a real fire in the building. You will see fire alarms and emergency exits in all buildings including ILAC. The misuse of the alarms is a serious issue since all buildings have to be evacuated and firefighters will arrive as soon as the alarm goes off. Misuse of fire alarms in any building whether it is private or public property will result in fines of $500 - $1,000 and upward for repeat offences. In case of fire, the alarm will go off and all students have to follow the staffs instructions to evacuate the building using the stairs only.

Safety Canada is a very clean and safe country. However, use the same caution that you would take in your own country. Be aware of the people around you and of your surroundings. Try to appear as though you know where you are going, even if you do not. The following tips may be helpful: Do not carry large sums of cash. Try to plan your cash needs so that you use the bank machine during daylight hours. If you must use the bank machine after dark, go with someone you know. When you are in a restaurant or outside the school, keep your purse or backpack beside you. Use caution when you travel on public transit at night. When you go out at night, go with another person. Stay on streets that are well lit. If you are going out alone, tell someone where you will be and what time you will be home. Call if you are going to be late. Do not give your address or phone number to strangers, such as people you meet in bars or on the street. Students are responsible for their own belongings left behind or forgotten at school.

Immigration Canada If you are studying on a student visa or a tourist visa, the law says you cannot work legally in Canada. Exceptions may be made in the case of internships or work& study programs. See International Counselors for more information. Not all students need a student visa. It is important to know this because it can save you time and money. 1) Tourist status: If you are studying at ILAC for less than 180 days, you may attend as a tourist. 2) Student status: If you intend to study for longer than 180 days, you must obtain student authorization. If you are on a student visa, you must attend classes for the period of studies indicated on your Letter of Acceptance. If you leave the school before the end of the period of studies indicated on your Letter of Acceptance and remain in Canada, you must change the status of your visa. If you do not do this, you may be reported to the Enforcement Branch of Canada Immigration.

The ILAC office can provide the application form you need to extend your student visa. When you have completed your application form, be sure to bring it to the ILAC office. We can check it for you to make sure everything is in order. Canada Immigration charges a fee of approximately $125 (subject to change) to process your application. If you currently have a tourist visa and would like to change your status to a student visa, you must leave Canada in order to do so.ILAC students with tourist visas usually visit the nearest Canadian Consulate in the USA. You may need to apply for a US visa well in advance because the application process takes several weeks. For more information visit www.cic.gc.ca/ or call 1888-242-2100 For USA visa contact: United States Consulate in Toronto Non-Immigrant Visa Unit 225 Simcoe Street (Saint Patrick Subway Station) Tel: (416) 595-1700 Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:45 am 12:00 pm APPLY ONLINE FOR AN APPOINTMENT http://www.consular.canada.usembassy.gov/toronto.asp
