Air Pollution

When looking at air pollution, we can see that there are many types, one type is acid rain. Scientists have discovered that air pollution from the burning of fossil fuels mainly in power stations and industry in countries such as Germany, United Kingdom and other economically developed countries is the major cause of acid rain. Acidic deposition or acid rain as it is commonly known occurs when emissions of sulphur dioxide (so2) and oxides of nitrogen (no) react in the atmosphere with water, oxygen and oxidants to form various acidic compounds, sunlight further accelerates this process with the introduction of heat. These compounds then fall to the earth in either wet form (such as rain, snow, and fog) or dry form (such as gas and particles). The wind then blows these acidic particles onto buildings, cars, homes and trees. In some instances, these gases and particles can then eat and corrode away the objects which they settle on. There are many effects of acid rain all of which are very negative for the environment, one of these affects is the acidification of lakes and streams and trees at high elevations (for example, red spruce trees above 2,000 ft). acid rain primarily affects sensitive bodies of water those which rest atop soil. There are more social effects of acid rain one is that the health of the general population of a country seems to be worsening due to the air born acidic particles, so2 has now been regulated by the clean air act in 1990,when sulphur dioxide interacts in the atmosphere to form sulphur aerosols, which may be transported long distances through the air, most of these aerosols then being inhaled and lung conditions e.g. asthma and bronchial conditions are a result of the so2 emissions. In 2010 when the benefits of the clean air act have been realised then there will be decreased mortality, hospital admissions and emergency room visits. The clean air act is an international agreement which is set by the environment council which meet and discuss global environmental issues e.g. air pollution, then come up with strategies to combat these problems. Another air pollutant is the production of smoke and smog from the industrial countries mainly containing ash and other lung disorder causing chemicals and materials so governments especially the united kingdom have had to fit filters such as limestone filters on chimneys to restrict the amount of sulphur dioxide emissions which eventually leads to acid rain, they have been made to do this with the introduction of regulation brought forward by the European union (EU) in Brussels which have given the united kingdom targets of reducing its sulphur dioxide emissions by %60. As the united kingdom is seen to be the main causer of the acid rain in scandanavia, however this can never be proved and unless this can be proved fines and court cases cant be brought against the Britis

Air and water is what separates our planet earth, from any other plant we know, without these two vitally important forms of matter no living organisms would be able to survive. For millions of years, diverse communities of plant and animal species have managed to survive without dramatically affecting the atmosphere in any way. That was, until humans began technologically advancing to what we are today. Since about the eighteenth century, when people burnt coal for central heating, humans have been gradually polluting the atmosphere. By doing so they have been putting their own health at risk as well as the general wellbeing of the earth itself. G.D. Tillman from the Environmental Protection Agency comments on the issue, The concerning factor is, that the majority of people dont know just how much of a threat they are placing on the environment. Studies conducted by the CSIRO Atmospheric Research Team in June 02, sho wed that road traffic was responsible for just over one third of dangerous and often toxic chemicals found in the Australian air. It was also found that cars were the main producer of the harmful chemicals, carbon monoxide or CO (91%) and nitric oxide or NO (82%). By not considering the environment, hum

environmental prob-lems such as photochemical smog and acid rain. NO2 can also have direct effects in large bodies of water by a process called eutrophication. This process occurs when a body of water suffers an increase in nutrients that leads to a reduction in the amount of oxygen in the water, producing an environment that is destructive to fish and other animal life. A decline in soil moisture in many regions

What right do humans have to fill the air with such dangerous and volatile chemicals threatening the existence of diverse communities of plant and animal species? Why do we drive when it is not entirely necessary? What is wrong with walking to the beach, riding to the shop or catching the bus in to town? Each of these forms of transport is beneficial to the environment and can reduce the concentrations of the atmospheric pollutants emitted by cars. ourselves is, why do we produce so much CO and NO, and what can we do about it? Carbon monoxide is the result of incomplete combustion of carbon containing materials, found in motor vehicles. It has the ability to react with other naturally occurring gasses in the atmosphere to form the most commonly kno

The amount of gases that are being released into the environment are causing a number of environmental hazards such as damage to the ozone layer, global warming, smog, and acid rain. When looking at air pollution, we can see that there are many types, one type is acid rain. Scientists have discovered that air pollution from the burning of fossil fuels mainly in power stations and industry in countries such as Germany, United Kingdom and other economically developed countries is the major cause of acid rain. Acidic deposition or acid rain as it is commonly known occurs when emissions of sulphur dioxide (so2) and oxides of nitrogen (no) react in the atmosphere with water, oxygen and oxidants to form various acidic compounds, sunlight further accelerates this process with the introduction of heat(Miller). These compounds then fall to the earth in either wet form s uch as rain, snow, and fog or dry form. There are many negative effects of acid rain for the environment, one of these affects is the acid in lakes and streams and trees at high elevations. Acid rain primarily affects sensitive bodies of water those which rest atop soil with a limited ability to neutralize acidic compounds (called buffering cap

There are also economic implications to acid rain, acidic particles are known to contribute to the corrosion of metals and deterioration of stone buildings and paint on cars . The corrosion seriously depreciates the value of buildings and goods which are a value to society e.g. old buildings which have to be maintained more due to the increase and effects of acid rain, like statues features becoming less deformed and rounded(Miller). Some manufacturers of motor vehicles have had top paint their cars with acid resistant paint which can protect the car against the corrosive effects of acid rain, at an average cost of 5 per car produced in the Scandinavian countries which is a total of 61 million per year on top of all new cars sold in the Scandinavian countries. However certain regulations have been introduced to prevent future increases in damages to materials, the acid rain program will try to reduce emissions of so2 ,the benefits of this program are measured, by the c osts now of repair or damage since the program was introduced. Another air pollutant is the production of smoke and smog from the industrial countries mainly containing ash and other lung disorder causing chemicals and materials so governments especially the united kingdom have had to fit filters such as limestone filters on chimneys to restrict the amount of sulphur dioxide emissions which eventually leads to acid rain, they have been made to do this with the introduction of regulation brought forward by the European union (EU) in Bru

Each time you drive to work or school, use your heater, clean your windows or even gel your hair, you create air pollution you make choices that can reduce pollution. You are not expected to not make any air pollution, (even though that would be good). You are only expected to reduce it by not making too much waste. When more people make clean air choices, we'll all breathe easier. About 7 tons per day of smog-forming gases and almost a ton of inhalable particles are spared from the air we breathe due to use of bicycles rather than motor vehicles. People choosing to pedal rather than drive usually replace short automobile trips that are disproportionately high in pollutant emissions. Many newer vehicles are designed to produce even lower levels of emissions. These vehicles are called "low emission vehicles. The ARB carries out a non-regulatory Indoor Air Quality and Personal

Exposure Assessment Program that includes sponsored research, exposure assessment, development of indoor air quality guidelines, and public education and outreach. The goal of the Indoor Program is to identify and reduce exposures to indoor air pollutants. Today, because of industrial pollution, everybody carries in his or her body over 500 chemicals that would not have been in a person living in the 1920's. It's not really surprising then that over the same time period cancer rates have risen to such an extent that one in three people alive now will be diagnosed with cancer at sometime in their life. Scary, but it lies within our grasp to change things. Industrial chemicals in the air, in the soil, in the water and in our food are not the only cause of cancer, but they are almost certainly a major one. Amazingly. a clean, toxics free world is now in sight. Politicia

Air pollution is actually the addition of any harmful substances to the atmosphere, which causes the damaging of the environment, human health and the quality of life. With the development in industry, came along the increase in air pollution, which occurs inside homes, schools, offices even in the countryside. Consequently there has been an increase in the death rates resulting from various diseases caused by air pollution varying from breathing problem to lung cancer. Air pollution does not only affect people but it also damages the whole ecological system in which plants and animals are harmed as well. Air pollution has reached such a critical stage where it affects the earth's atmosphere as it lets in more harmful radiation from the sun. Consequently, our polluted atmosphere is becoming a better insulator, thus, preventing heat from escaping back into space. That is why there is a global rise in temperature which scientists refer to as " global warming". As a result of this rise in temperature the world food supply and sea level will be affected, also there is the probability of increase in the tropical disease. If we try to investigate the major sources o

If people use public transportation instead of driving, this will reduce pollution by limiting the number of pollution emitting cars. Indoor pollution control must also be accomplished threw proper ventilation, then banning smoking in public rooms. Sealing foundations and installing special pipes and pumps can also prevent radon from going into buildings. 3] Instituting air quality monetary of CAIP activities

It is important to point out that these measures helped stem the increase of global pollution emission levels. Air pollution c0ontrol is a race between the reduction of pollution in the fast growth of sources. At the same time, developing countries are building up their own industries. New efforts to control air pollution will be vital as long as these trends continue.

Air Pollution
Ill go out for a breath of fresh air is an often-heard phrase. But how many of us realize that this has become irrelevant in todays world, because the quality of air in our cities is anything but fresh. Air pollution is a serious problem in our society these days. We come across it indoors, when people have been smoking, and outdoors, where motor vehicle exhaust pollutes the air. For years scientists have been warning us that polluted air is a hazard to our health. It seems these warning are not being taken acutely enough. The truth is that air pollution is growing worse, especially in compactly populated societies. We must for that reason take instantaneous action to progress the quality of air we breathe. The moment you step out of the house and are on the road you can actually see the air getting polluted; a cloud of smoke from the exhaust of a bus, car, or a motor vehicle; smoke billowing from a factory chimney, flyash produced by thermal power plants, and speeding cars causing dust to rise from the roads. Natural occurrences such as the eruption of a volcano and even someone smoking a cigarette can also cause air pollution. Pollution is the infection of the earths atmo

The task of cleaning up air pollution, though difficult, is not believed to be impossible. The shift to less polluting forms of power generation, such as solar energy, wind energy, geothermal, tidal and other forms of renewable energy in place of fossil fuel can be used for controlling pollution. These are some of the things we can do to help prevent air pollution. Every least bit of effort counts. Then maybe, we might be able to save our earth from falling apart. But for now its just a maybe. Trees give out oxygen and take in carbon dioxide and thereby clean the air around us. It is therefore our duty to take care of them. Look after the trees in your neighborhood, along with your friends, begin a tree watch similar to a neighborhood watch. See to it that trees in your area are looked after. Plant more trees and tend to them too. atmosphere with materials that obstruct with human health, the feature of life, or the natural performance of ecosystems (living organisms and their physical environments). Although some environmental pollution is a consequence of natural causes like volcanic eruptions, most is caused by human actions. Pollution is altering the earths environment so that it lets in more dangerous radiation fr om the sun. At the same time, our contaminated atmosphere is becoming a better insulator, averting heat from evading back into space and leading to an increase in universal average temperatures. Scientists

Dust from the cracked, dry earth mists the sky. The horizon supports the afternoon sun. In the distance, two silhouettes come walking forward. The closer they two figures get, the more clearly distinguishable they become. It is a father and daughter dressed in shorts and tee shirts. They are ready for summer, only one major problem. The two are in gas masks because the air is toxic to humans. Everywhere the turn there are deep cracks in the surface of the earth. These stretch on for miles in every direction. Desolation and abandonment encompass this scene. The daughter questions her father, What happened? He replies, We did not keep our air clean and free of pollutants.

This was a commercial when I was a young girl. It was extremely effective in bringing to the foreground a problem that is widely overlooked by society as a whole. Air pollution is a serious matter and one that needs attention. Before we can address air pollution, we must first define pollution. Pollution has its origins in the Latin word polluere, which means contamination of any feature of the environment (http://hk.geocities.com/xavier114fch/01/01-content.htm). Pho

fuels either in the home, by industry or internal combustion engines. With pollutants so rampant in our society currently, how are we to inform and interest people? There needs to be more education on the subject. Schools, newspapers, media, etc. all can help to inform and educate the public on ways to work towards cleaner air not just for their sake but the sake of future generations. The problem in todays world is that quantity is valued more than quality. The more of a product that can be marketed, the better, this is the policy for most industries. Big industries cutting corners and smaller companies not held to the same standards can contribute to the growing air pollution predicament.

Air Pollution
Air Pollution is addition of harmful substances to the atmosphere resulting in damage to the environment, human health, and quality of life. One of many forms of pollution, air pollution occurs inside homes, schools, and offices; in cities; across continents; and even globally. Air pollution makes people sick, it causes breathing problems and promotes cancer, and it harms plants, animals, and the ecosystems in which they live. Some air pollutants return to earth in the form of acid rain and snow, which corrode statues and buildings, damage crops and forests, and make lakes and streams unsuitable for fish and other plant and animal life. Pollution is changing the earth\'s atmosphere so that it lets in more harmful radiation from the sun. At the same time, our polluted atmosphere is becoming a better insulator, preventing heat from escaping back into space and leading to a rise in global average temperatures. Scientists predict that the temperature increase, referred to as global warming, will affect world food supply, alter sea level, make weather more extreme, and increase the spread of tropical disease. Most air pollution comes from one human activity: burning fossil fuels, natural gas, coal, and oil to power industri

An ongoing problem around the world is the pollution of our air. There are unlimited sources that produce these air polluting chemicals daily. This often scares people because pollution of this kind leads to global warming.

To help with air pollution problems you need to understand that the quality of the air we breathe matters. After all, if you have kids then you may one day have grand kids and it will only get worse for them. So, you need to make up your mind that you will do your part and do it as soon as you can. Recycling is a great way to help reduce air pollution. Instead of throwing everything away find ways to reuse it. Check out the recycling programs and centers in your area and get involved. You might even make a few dollars, since some places give small cash rewards. Get busy and recycle today.

Trade in your fume throwing gas lawnmower for an electric one. Or get one of the old fashion push mowers that also provide exercise. Some of the gas lawnmowers people are using are like baby smog monsters. This is an easy way for you to help reduce air pollution problems. Ride with a friend or take public transport; the less vehicles running around the better. Anytime you get a chance walk or ride a bicycle instead of driving. Do all your errands in one trip such as the store, bank, cleaners etc. Oh and drive a vehicle that gets better mpg instead of a gas guzzler.
3

Get rid of toxic chemicals at home. There are plenty of non-toxic household products on the market to choose from these days and while painting use a brush instead of a sprayer. These are a few ways that you can help reduce air pollution problems with very little effort. While you're at it reduce energy use. There are many small things you can do to help pollution problems. For example, use energy efficient appliances and unplug them when not in use, keep heat down in winter and A/C in summer, insulate well and seal air leaks at windows and doors.
4

Plant trees and keep the trees you have healthy. Trees reduce air pollution problems. They do this by producing oxygen, providing shade in summer and blocking cold winds in winter, thus helping us be energy efficient. Lastly, know that there are many other ways you can help, however, this short list will get you started. So, don't delay and do your part today.

By choosing to use eco-friendly building materials and non-toxic paints; installing energy efficient appliances and devices in our homes; using renewable technologies; eating organic, locally grown foods; and recycling and reusing products, we can each have a positive impact on air quality. Since vehicle emissions are a major source of pollution, we can also help by adopting clean fuel technologies such as electric, hybrid or biofuel cars, and also by walking, cycling, car sharing and using public transport. Air pollution is a major global issue, with huge impacts on our health, our communities and the wider environment. It is imperative that we address these concerns, before it is too late. Each of us can take action on this, and remember, no matter how small these steps may seem, it all adds up to cleaner air. * Recycle: While it's hard to believe in the 21st century, many households still don't recycle. During the production of items such as plastics, glass bottles, cardboard, and aluminum cans, harmful emissions are produced and sent into the air. By recycling, fewer of these items need to be produced, and that will lessen the damage done to the air. * Carpool to work: With the ever-increasing prices of fuel, carpooling to work has never seemed such an attractive option. Not only will you help the pocketbook by sharing the weekly gas tab with at least one other person, but you'll substantially decrease the amount of harmful emissions vehicles send into the air each day. If you carpool with three other people who are all used to driving to work in their own cars, you've cut the amount of emissions the four of you would normally produce by 75 percent. * Take care of your car: Several things impact how efficiently a vehicle will burn fuel. Tires that aren't properly inflated, a dirty air filter and even your own driving habits can have a negative impact on the efficiency of a vehicle. Rapidly accelerating burns more fuel, as does a lot of stopand-go driving. A dirty air filter makes the car work harder and reduces fuel efficiency, as do poorly inflated tires. Keep up with all manufacturer guidelines.
* Turn the lights off: Believe it or not, most people leave extra lights on throughout their home. This is both bad for the environment and bad for the utility bill. Turn the lights off in rooms you're not using, and put a dim light bulb in any exterior lights you keep on overnight
