Library offers childrens programs during summer
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Haddonfield Sun
Keeping children involved in
summertime activities might be
easier than getting them to pick
up a book or go to the library. The
Haddonfield Library offers pro-
grams during the summer that
keep children involved in educa-
tional activities, while making
sure they are having fun.
According to childrens librari-
an Dorothy Peppard, the same
number of story times are offered
at the library with the addition of
the summer reading program,
drop-in story times and activities,
as well as educational computer
programs.
We do what we can, Peppard
said, adding the size of the chil-
drens library may be small, but
the librarians try to make it as
welcoming as possible.
As soon as parents and chil-
dren walk down the steps from
the main library and into the chil-
drens library, they see shelves
filled with books on the left and a
computer station and a room
filled with books, movies, DVDs
and audio books.
Peppard said the computer sta-
tion, or the Early Learning Cen-
ter, is set up for children of all
ages to enjoy educational activi-
ties. There are two computers
parallel to Peppards desk and a
few more that soon will have pro-

We try to keep the library
very welcoming, she said.
Peppard said all activities, in-
cluding the reading program, are
meant to attract children to the li-
brary, and keep their minds
going during the summer.
The librarys summer reading
program, for children in pre-
school to eighth grade, is called
Dig into Reading. Students
read books and mark it on a sum-
mer reading sheet.
Preschool students parents
read books to their child and
record it at the library. The teen
reading program, Beneath the
Surface, is for students in
grades eight to 12.
Children and teens must read
six books before the end of sum-
mer to receive a prize.
Summer reading participants
will join in an end of the summer
party on Aug. 29, from 7 to 8 p.m.
at Borough Hall.
The celebration will include
refreshments, entertainment and
more. Peppard said the Dino Dig
themed party would also have an
archeologist present showing off
a fossilized head of a Tyran-
nosaurus Rex.
During the school year, chil-
dren have to read assigned books.
During the summer, they may re-
ceive assigned summer reading,

but the librarys program is a
way for children to explore their
literary options and pick a book
of choice.
Its their choice during the
summer, Peppard said, adding
the library also takes special re-
quests from the children if they
are unable to find a book.
Haddonfield resident Aimmee
Powers said her daughter, Bella,
is involved in the library Story-
Search program a program
where children ages 9 to 12 read
Holes by Louis Sachar at home
and meet with a librarian to dis-
cuss the book.
She said they come to the li-
brary once per week during the
summer, but when they go on va-
cation, she said she makes sure
the kids stock up on books to read
while away.
Bella Regina was sitting at the
Early Learning Center while her
mom, Lauren Regina, was ready
to check out a few DVDs.
Lauren Regina said she takes
her daughters, Bella and Bria, to
the library once a week to rent
books, movies and join in on
story time activities.
Both Powers and Regina love
taking their children to the li-
brary during the summer.
Its very valuable for kids to
keep building literary skills,
Peppard said. If they think the
library is a fun place and feel
comfortable and welcomed, they
will take advantage of that.

The quality and care you expect from a family owned business
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Haddonfield Sun
A twisted, rusty piece of steel is
sitting in the Haddon Fire Compa-
ny No. 1 station. On the surface, it
is an unattractive chunk of metal,
but it acts as a memorial for the
lives lost during the attacks of
Sept. 11, 2001.
Four members of Haddon Fire
Company No. 1 set out to New
York on Wednesday, July 17, to
transport the steel that was once a
part of the World Trade Center.
The plan is to mount the steel out-
side for all to see, reflecting on the
tragic loss of 2,996 civilians and
first responders.
Ever since that day, we have
been trying to do something to
memorialize the lives lost. Its our
way of showing that through the
fire department and the bor-
ough, Butch Brees, president of
the Haddon Fire Company, said.
According to Brees, 13,000
pieces were awarded to various
companies through the U.S. He
said the Cherry Hill Fire Depart-
ment acquired a piece of steel and
aided the Haddon Fire Company
in the process.
The company waited six to
eight months before receiving a
phone call for a transfer approval
from the Port Authority of New
York and New Jersey and finally

T
he Internet is quite a powerful
tool, but, sometimes its power
can be used for bad instead of
good. Information as harmless as
facts, someones opinion or pictures of
people having fun can turn harmful in
a second.
Inappropriate comments on a photo;
attacking someones character, race,
religion or sexuality; cyber-bullying;
or straight mis-reporting facts all take
advantage of the Internets power to
do bad.
Social media sites such as Facebook,
Twitter and Instagram make it easier
to connect people all over the world,
and even easier to do so in a negative
fashion.
But, luckily, there is some good
going on in the digital world.
The state recently released its Uni-
form Crime Reporting rates, and local
police departments have attributed
significant drops in crime to the their
utilization of social media.
In Evesham Township, for example,
crime dropped 21.7 percent. In
Moorestown, crime dropped 36.9 per-
cent. Officials from both departments
say their presence on Facebook and
Twitter has helped tremendously.
Both of those departments use the
social media sites, as well as informa-
tion sharing service Nixle, to not only
notify residents of crimes, alerts and
issues, but also as communication
tools for residents to submit their own
issues and concerns directly to the de-
partment.
Theyve found that its much easier,
and more efficient, for residents to
submit information on the computer
than it is to call in or stop by their of-
fices.
Its great to see that police depart-
ments at a local level are utilizing the
latest technology to make their jobs
easier and more efficient, and provid-
ing more avenues for residents to feel
safe and communicate with their local
police force.
Evesham and Moorestown arent
the only towns with police depart-
ments doing this; they are just exam-
ples.
To those departments that are doing
the same, bravo; keep it up. To those
that arent, its time to step up and go
out on a limb. Its worth it.

Residents want to bring concerns
to borough commissioners
The neighbors of Maple, Bryn Mawr and
Beechwood avenues wish to call the bor-
ough commissioners attention to the fol-
lowing concerns that we believe are nega-
tively impacting the quality of life and
property values in our neighborhood and
the Haddonfield community at large:
Zoning board process and accounta-
bility The zoning board has ignored irreg-
ularities and inconsistencies in the vari-
ance requests for 645 Maple Ave. and a prop-
erty on 412 Hawthorne. We believe that the
integrity of the zoning board process is in
question.
Character of neighborhoods and the
Haddonfield community The zoning
board is not protecting the setback ordi-
nances and continues to ignore the master
plan.
Environmental concerns (trees, open
space, noise, air quality) The zoning board
decisions in permitting builders to increase
square footage to maximize profits is exac-
erbating the environmental impacts to the
neighborhoods and community as a whole.
The loss of healthy mature trees is con-
tributing to lower air quality, increased
noise (filter sounds, planes increasing),
greater flooding and drainage problems.
Haddonfield as a historic community
with unique and diverse housing stock of
colonial cape, Dutch colonial, Victorian,
Georgian, American craftsman, cottage
and ranch, which is dramatically diminish-
ing with atypical developer housing stock,
many of low-quality.
If this continues, Haddonfield could look
like the farm field development housing
stock of surrounding towns and be more a
transitional community, no longer stable,
desirable nor historically preserved.
Impacts personal property equity
and costs Adjacent property owners and
neighborhoods are incurring greater water
problems, flooding and drainage problems
from these overbuilt sites, lowering the
value of their properties, while increasing
tax burden.
Deteriorating infrastructure and
safety Without adequate storm water
roadway drainage, Maple Avenue is sinking
in places and flooding is worse: Prior sink
hole at Maple and Bryn Mawr has stress
fractures; there are sinking spots that re-
tain standing water (breed mosquitoes); the
road is dropping, asphalt is pulling away
and damaging sidewalks; and Maple Court
continues to have potholes, flooding and
erosion of yards.
The residents of Maple, Bryn Mawr and
Beechwood avenues

Steel to be placed on a brick pedestal
with a bronze plaque for memorial
picked it up from John F. Kennedy
International Airport in Queens,
N.Y.
Its a very careful process they
go through in the scenario of re-
trieving an artifact from the
World Trade Center, Brees said.
The steel will eventually be
placed to the left of the emergency
vehicle entrance on a brick
pedestal. A bronze plaque will be
included as part of the memorial.
But it might be a short while until
the project starts to take form.
Brees said the borough must ap-
prove the project before moving
forward.
Ideally, it would be ready for
Sept. 11. Its a possibility but we
cant be sure yet, fire chief Joe
Riggs said, adding he would like
to see a reveal ceremony on Sept.
11 or fire prevention night.
In the meantime, the steel will
remain on display in the fire-
house, Brees said.
We got it at the right time. We
wanted to do this for awhile, for-
mer assistant chief and volunteer
Will Schaub said, adding this
might be the last year for anyone
to receive an artifact.
Schaub was one of the four who
went to transport the steel. It was-
nt the first time he went to New
York on a World Trade Center re-
lated expedition.
At the time of the attack,
Schaub was working at Virtua
Health System as a paramedic su-
pervisor.
Its kind of ironic because on
that day they had a disaster drill
planned in Camden. We had two
extra units come in and all of this
went down at 9 a.m. We ended up
keeping the two crews, sent a five-
truck contingent to New York and
staged in the Meadowlands. We
were expecting a lot of injuries
and we had nothing, he said.
Schaub remembered the
smoke, ash and those who were
safely huddled in the stadium.
He said adding the artifact to
the firehouse not only adds to the
history of Haddonfield, it will
serve as a constant reminder for
all who pass by and remember, es-
pecially Haddonfields first re-
sponders. Commissioner Neal
Rochford said the children were
not born to witness Sept. 11, 2001.
That will be perfect for their
parents to tell them about the
tragedy that happened that day,
bringing our nation together,
Rochford said.
Its going to be a constant re-
minder of the risks that fire fight-
ers take. A constant reminder in a
memorial of those that passed
that day, Riggs said.

The Little Shop where she was
presented with a quilt as part of
the Quilts of Valor program.
Nicole serves in the Army and
served in support of Operation
Enduring Freedom and Opera-
tion Iraqi Freedom in 2003.
Quilts of Valor asked The Lit-
tle Shop to provide a quilt for
Pierce, and a group made the
pieced top for her while on a quilt
retreat in March.
Japan Exchange
organizes visit to town
Beginning on July 27, you may
notice some visitors strolling the
streets of Haddonfield with local
teenagers. It is likely that these
visitors are from Kasukabe,
Japan. The Haddonfield Japan
Exchange has organized this visit,
and the students are the guests of
Haddonfield host families. From
July 27 until Aug. 8, daily activi-
ties have been planned, including
events such as trips to Washing-
ton, D.C., Baltimore, Md.,
Philadelphia and a day at the
beach in Stone Harbor. Also on
the schedule will be tubing on the
Delaware, Cowtown Rodeo, a visit
to the Mabel Kay House to enter-
tain the seniors, bowling, shop-
ping and a pool party.
Please make sure you give a
warm Haddonfield welcome to
these 17 young ladies and two
chaperones when you encounter
them. In Japanese yokoso
means welcome. Don't hesitate
to try out your new Japanese
word. You just might make a new
friend.
If you would like to be involved
please contact Bill Brown at bill-

The Haddonfield Sun
After 30 years of service, Had-
donfield Police Chief John Ban-
ning is hanging up his hat and
badge at the end of the month.
I worked for a good group of
people, Banning said at the July
16 commissioners meeting where
his retirement was announced. I
appreciate the opportunity to
serve [Haddonfield].
Mayor Jeff Kasko, along with
commissioners Neal Rochford
and John Moscatelli, thanked
Banning for his service to Had-
donfield.
He kept the department pro-
fessional, Rochford said.
Before slowly making his way
up the rankings, Banning served
as an officer in Wildwood for less
than a year.
He said he heard about an
opening in Haddonfield from a
fellow academy member.
In 1983, he started out as a pa-
trolman and spent the last four
years of his career as chief.
As times went on, I moved up
in the rankings from lieutenant,
captain and finally chief. I en-
joyed being on the street most of
all, he said.
His most memorable moment
was when he saved someones life
performing CPR.
It was the first time I ever
saved a life using CPR, he said.
He said he had the opportunity
to see his career in the depart-
ment from start to finish.
Banning said the best part
about his job was the people I
have met over the years, includ-
ing the people in town and com-
missioners.
