Foreword
The material in this refresher course has been designed to enable you to prepare for your university mathematics programme. When your programme starts you will nd that your ability to get the best from lectures and tutorials, and to understand new material, depends crucially upon having a good facility with algebraic manipulation. We think that this is so important that we are making this course available for you to work through before you come to university.
Level
This material has been prepared for students who have completed an A-level course in mathematics.

5. Surds
Roots, for example 2, 5, 3 6 are also known as surds. A common error cause of ab = a b but is misuse of expressions involving surds. You should be aware that a + b is NOT equal to a + b. 1. It is often possible to in equivalent forms. For example 48 can be write surds written 3 16 = 3 16 = 4 3. Write the following in their simplest forms: 180 b) 63 a)
