Being architecture students, we had to find ways in which we could improve their way of living as well as to make the place environmentally friendly. Below are some factors, which we considered after discussing critically with our group members. Before we look into the problems, these are visual conditions of Agathians Shelter.

Firstly, we will look into varies issues that we have encountered and these include the following: Environmental issues 1. Rainwater Harvesting 2. Garbage Disposal 3. Growing more crops 4. Cleanliness and good health of the children 5. Accentuating the beauty of the orphanage Social Issues 1. Sensitizing the children 2. Helping the management to improve the system We have chosen to tackle their leaking problems and use this to our advantage, which would help them. This proposition would be environmental issue No. 1. We have chosen to investigate rainwater harvesting because this will help utilize their leakage and cut their cost of water. Visuals of the leakage

West leakage from the roof

East leakage from the roof

East leakage from the roof Secondly, after debating over which issue we wanted to tackle. Our group pinpointed out some solutions that would help to solve this issue. As leakage was found from the Gutter/extension of the roof, rainwater was found being wasted along the entrance of the shelter. We discovered that capturing it would be an advantage for them, as it would be in good use. This is why we decided to use piping to capture the rainwater and run it along the sides of the house so that it can be filled into various water tanks. At different sections, it will serve a different purpose for the shelter. This will tackle two more points from the environmental issues. First of them would be No.3. Other than using the rainwater as a hub for them for washing, may it be for dishes, flooring or just dirt along the walls, we propose to pipe the water along the roof along with the gutter to water the plants that we will want to grow onto the gate. This will also accentuate the beauty of the house. Please look below at figure 1 to see the area of utilization.

The second point we are able to tackle is No. 3. This will enable the children to drink filtered water during/after a long day of sporting activity out at the backyard. How this will work is that an independent pipe will come from the Gutter/extension and flow along to the East side of the house. Please look below at figure 2 to see the area of utilization.

Option 5:

Option 5 involves 3 dispensers, where the main pipe is cut on the west front of the roofing into a twin piping system. One pipes follows along the walls to meet the side of the house, the other runs along the roof to connect to the gutter where water from the roof can also be collected together so that it can be send to water the plants. If not it will be transferred back into the tank. On the east side of the roofing, water will be collected and used as drinking water that will flow to a separate tank. This is the finalization of our idea Our group has an alteration on the final design (6a) whereby it was shifted and changed to suit the area. Simplifying the design helped ease the physical work on the pipes and work around the area to give the workable access for the residents living at the shelter. Our group has chosen option 5 as our final design. This is because it is the simplest design out of the 5 stated. It uses the advantage of gravity to help flow the rainwater towards its target, which is the tank. Mechanisms are not needed, it would make things more complicated with the design so we decided to keep it simple and stick with this. With this our cost will also be dropped in which we are able to spend more on the growth of the plants.

Additional relating research - Material Research Piping System for Rainwater Harvester PVC (recommended): Polyvinyl Chloride is a plastic made from abundant resources, such as Salt. These pipes can last for about 10 years, which helps reduce the use of salt so for it to be diminished in the coming years will not be possible. PVC Pipes: Known for its wide array of characteristics, they are relatively light weight, making it more transportable by truck per trip compared to metal pipes. Pipes made from this material can whistand acid form corrosion better than metal pipes, even salt can corrode metal pipes while PVC pipes can whistand them. On the long run, farmers and home owners will save much more money in terms of replacement as they are very tough built pipes, and can last them for a decade or more. It is also resistant to thermal increase, which completes its all rounded and well protected characteristics. PVC pipes are easily accessible in hardware stores so it can be the most ideal material to use for this Rainwater Harvester project. The best size to use for this project is 2. Available in sizes from 1/2 to 2. White in color

Copper: This mild corrosion resistant metal has been the dominant material in piping around the world since a millennium ago before plastic was introduced. It can be shaped when it is fitted in certain areas, and it is heavier than plastic. They can last a long time like plastic but are more open to other types of corrosion. Copper Pipes: Heavy, strong and fire resistant, can be subjected to hydrothermal heat but is proven to be beneficial in colder climate countries, as the heat from the hot water can travel pass the copper pipes to heat the house. More working skill is needed to assemble a copper pipe system than a Plastic system. For its effectiveness, the price of copper pipes are much lesser than PVC pipes for example, but copper pipes are only most effective with neutral acidity water. Copper pipes do not support bacterial growth. It is also a popular choice as they are easily accessible in hardware stores and they are recyclable. Common sizes are: 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4. Water Collection Polyethylene Tanks (Poly Tanks): They are a popular choice of plastic tanks used in the Rain Water Harvesting communities, made from food grade polyethylene so it is safe for water storage, and they are affordable. This material is strong and lighter than other alternative materials such as metal tanks, they do not rust like metal tanks and they come in a wide array of colours and shapes to fit your own taste. For this project, these tanks are the most practical for use given our restrictions on expertise, man power, funds and time. Two tanks are needed for the shelter so that water can be collected at different areas. Sizes go from 50 Gallons to 1000 Gallons.

Add-ons Wire Mesh Leaf Eater: They are pipe openings that are fitted with stainless steel wire mesh that traps leaves, mosquitoes and large debris from redirected rain water. This is used as a First filtration mechanism before the water is completely filtered by the water filters. PVC Gutter Pipes: Basically they are normal PVC pipes but cut in half and placed horizontally on the end of the steel shelter at the Agathians Children Home. The

openings are fitted with Wire Mesh to keep the leaves and unwanted debris running down the slanted roof. Water is redirected to a Poly Tank. Pipe Joining Methods Slip Couplers: A short Pipe bigger in size than the two adjoining pipes, each smaller pipe is fitted tightly in both ends of the coupler. Slip Elbows ( 90 Degrees): Like the couplers, they join two pipes together when facing a length issue, but is only used for corner fittings. PVC Three-way Joint: Used for Junction Joints, where one pipe separates to two.

Reflection outcome within the group (a) Phases: Through the start of this project our team had fixed different segmental phases. This was to ensure the efficiency level would be met with our deadline. As we started this project, many things had to be taken into account. It was divided up as: (i) Inspection. (ii) Deliberation. (iii) Interrogation. Whilst discussing as a group upon choosing a location, we needed to find a suitable place where we could adapt our architecture and environmental skills together. (i) In this first phase was the Inspection period. Having chosen the Agathians Shelter, a search through the premises was first done to ensure their needs upon what we would like to place there. As a group, we took down problems that they faced into our own hands. We were more pleased that problems the shelter had be some sort of an environmental gift. Not just using old recycled parts as a way to help the place but using the environment into our favor. Unpleased with problems of leakages that the shelter had we planned to use Mother Nature and save it at the same time. Thus, using a rainwater harvesting technique, we used the leakage to many summoned tanks to help them with their problem as well as utilizing it. As a group we thought that this would also cut cost for the purposes of cleaning, mainly floors, driveways and dirt that gets in their way. Instead of using water from the pipes, they would now have this. As we deliberated about this problem, our main focus was on how we were going to capture this water and flow it. Many plans were made as to how we should flow the water down, where it should connect to and from, and how many we wanted to place them. This discussion went on for 2 weeks, finally a number was made and the process was finally getting into place. What we had done now was planning for the flow. Some didnt agree, some did, but at the consensus and advise of the lecturer, we found a joint agreement with the group to find the

best solution possible. After this was done, we needed to interrogate this further for conformation. (iii) At this final phase, the interrogation begins. Each group members came together to question each other and each plan for a purpose, to ensure the correct answer. Many disagreements had finally arrived and this was the means to our progress. As we overcame this, we started to overcome problems together rather than individually. Solutions from each member was voiced out and put to paper. Our plan had finally come together and we became all for it.

(b) Problems and solutions As we headed into the physical aspect of this project, we faced many problems. These included the: (i) Materials used. (ii) Placement of pipes that interfered with the building itself. (iii) Placement of water tanks. (iv) The installation technique. (v) Shortage of pipes/gutters. (vi) Lost of expertise. (i) Material problems that we faced were minor as it was for the gutter material and water tanks. As we had researched about the materials for the gutter system, we found of from a source of expertise that the width of the gutter we bought were not big enough to take the amount of water from the roof. Thus involving into an overflowing source of water at the gutter even before entering the tank. We had new gutter being brought for installation. Initially, our gutters were too narrow and small for the water intake. As to the water tank issue, what we thought to have the best tank was useless for this purpose. A further research had to be made so that we could ensure it would be properly fulfilled. Finally, the proper material was found and could be used for this purpose. It came to the conclusion of a polythene water tank. This second point was one that complicated the design thoroughly. Being a problem with the case of a leak from the pipe itself, electrical lines and wire would be a dangerous effect from it. i.e. placement of the pipes over a florescent light might spur unwanted and avoidable

short circuit in the shelter. It is because of this very precaution, we decided to re-shift the lines of pipes to a different angle and position. Thus interrupting with the progress and lost of working days. (iii) Different to the piping placement, this issue caused up spurs to the accessibility of the shelter and the walkway of those who passes by. i.e. we had a pipe being run from the top floor to the corner of the front gate. It is an ideal placement but not so accurate. As we placed the tank, we found that it got in the way of the water tap next to it. That gave us grief, as we had to re-shift it about 20 cm away from the wall where the pipes were already placed. After much work and redo, it was nicely shifted away from the pipe and also giving the gate space to open wide to its normal positioning. We had problems even before the installation of the pipes, gutters and tanks. What we failed to realize was that we did not know a single knowledge about plumbing. This stirred up aches and malfunctions that we thought could be overcome. Pipes were not properly joined and were vulnerable to leakages. A call for someone with proper experience was needed. As a group we decided to call upon a source of expertise the installation technique that we so needed. With the direction and advice given by our plumber, we managed to learn how joints needed to be joined together that we successfully as a group joined up. Materials were insufficient at one point, this gave us the chance to remeasure what was needed for the rest of the project. As we drew to the end of the installation, our plumber had gotten himself into an accident. Thankfully he is all right and well but is not answering our calls. This meant that the gutter system had yet to be installed with this loss, which called for a desperate measure of new expertise. Our group discussed about it, came to many consensus. Some thought we could figure it out ourselves, and some didnt. As a group vote was made, majority called for a new source of expertise as the project was coming to its deadline and we could not afford to waste perfectly good gutters. We had gotten a new source and is willing to direct and teach us his ways of installation, also he came to decision to do it for charity to by helping out for free.

(c) Teamwork As we worked through the problems and solution of this project, we went through hardship as a group where disagreements were found. This would have been see through the design process, materials and physical activity on the project. As a group we managed to shape up our individual problems, fixed and worked together as a team to provide the necessary resources to tackle these problems together. Without this, we wouldnt have mended the bond for the process of this project. Minutes spent on project

Progress documentation: (i) Week 1

We had listed down different shelters to look into (Places including Asrama Cahaya - Rumah Wanita Cacat , Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus - CHIJ, Boas Home, House of Joy And Rumah Hope). After deliberating on a location we found Agathians Shelter. Then after we decided that was our place to work on. We looked into Agathians and critically found specific problems that arose. The person guided us told us not only what they want but they would find useless. Problems have been listed as environmental issues and Social Issues on the Word Document. After much deliberation we proposed an idea of Rainwater Harvesting. (ii) Week 2

Rough designs were made on how we could utilize the problem. Researches on the piping and construction were made. This then gave us our inspiration for how the design would come up (advantages and drawbacks were found during this process. We proposed and met the council member, which was then please with the idea but not entirely sure about the design. We drew more designs and had it brought back for deliberation. After the design was made, we then looked in-depth about the method of construction method and most importantly the utilization of this Rainwater Harvesting. Most of our time was spent on what we should use it for and where to place it. As the design was still rough after finding out that we needed to find the proper placement, we then planned our next journey for the following week.

(iii)

Week 3

After much though on the design and placement of this utility, we then headed forward to the Shelter for another meeting with the council member. He accepted this design and gave us more ideas on where and how they would like it to be placed (the water tanks). This then gave us the opportunity to interact with the council member further as we walked around to find the comfort of the Shelter. As half of the groups were set and stone on this, we then got the measurements of the walls, also the house to start sketching this up. Now as the

design was taking place in our best manner, detailed sketches were made upon the fitting and joints. We then sat down to talk with the council member about their place in detail as we want to find sponsors, so we found out many things we could make a write up about so we can advertise and draw in sponsors. (iv) Week 4

On this week, the soil has already been bought as well as the plants. We then cut up the bottles using knife cutters so that the plants can rest in the soil in the bottle. Pots of plants were also planted separately from the bottles. This method ensures the recycling of the bottles. A number of 15 bottles had been done that day. As this was going on, the other side of the group was on a survey mission to find the pricing of the pipes, gutters, joints and water tanks. A listing of prices was made and later that week, these materials were bought. (v) Week 5

By this time, the materials had already been bought except the water tanks. An amount of 30m worth of PVP 50mm diameter pipes were bought along with 15 Straight joints, 15 Elbows and 5 T joints. We transported the pipes to the shelter and began work on the physical pipings. With the help of the plumber we were able to understand how to join and see what best method to do. He set an example and we then carried on the rest with help of hand from him. We connected both piping from each side of the Rectangular block of the leak, one going to the first floor and the other going to the second floor. Putting the pipes together was done and typing of them was followed. We faced a problem whereby we did not have enough gutter to be put it so we postponed it to our next visit. (vi) Week 6

We got to Agathians at 5pm in the after noon, after waiting for an hour we realized our source of expertise wasnt going to come so we decided to improvise and do what we can. We fixed the pipes into the tank, drilling holes and mending it all together. 2 tanks were done. Since our experience on gutters is at a 0% we didnt touch that and yet postponed it. Nevertheless we took time to play with the kids for a while and also we planted more plants that day too. After the planting of them, we found to have 7 more bottles/pots of plants being made.

Week 7

As we got to the shelter, 2 weeks prior to the last visit. We had finally completed our journey as we fixing the gutter on to the roof. This process took more time that the piping combined as it was tricky and a job that requires ladders and confidents to fix it. After we had completed this, we finally went through to shoot individual shots of how we felt about this whole journey. Once by one we had something to talk about though the children kept of shouting and moving the camera, we managed to finish it all by 6pm that day. We left Agathians shelter thanking the member of council in charge at that particular time and with sadness, as it would be one of our last visits there. Next week, after submission we will be heading there to check up on our work just to see if everything is working out and play with the kids. Emission Of CO2 and Other Toxic Fumes By The Materials Used Leading To The Completion Of Our Project PVC plays a major role in delivering and sustaining the quality, comfort and safety of modern life-styles. Its impressive ratio of cost to performance also means that people of all income groups can enjoy these benefits. High living standards are not just about the present, however. Future generations also have the right to material and other benefits. This is the foundation of the concept of Sustainable Development. PVC products are already helping every day to improve peoples lives and conserve natural resources in a world that is growing in population, with ever-increasing demands for water, food, shelter, sanitation and energy.

A well Understood Material PVC is a synthetic material derived from natural resources (oil and salt) like CO2 emissions from production. Many others used in our modern world, and is one of the most scientifically investigated substances on the planet. Investigations have consistently found that far from being the problem material that some NGOs have portrayed it to be, science indicates that It is not very different from other materials and indeed possesses some interesting natural advantages.

Energy consumption up to the production stage of plastics

Low Carbon Footprint The magnitude of CO2 emission for the material we use throughout its lifecycle, Comparative rate of heat loss from production to consumption and disposal, is an important factor when considering the global warming issue. PVC is proven as a material with minimal environmental load in terms of CO2 emission, when compared with metal or glass products of the same application.

PVC products also contribute significantly to energy efficiency through low thermal conductivity. PVC window profiles have three times the heat insulation efficiency of aluminum profiles. They cut down energy consumption for heating and air conditioning.

That uses less natural resources to make 57% of PVC is made out of chlorine, which is derived from common salt that is abundant on earth. Therefore PVC contributes significantly to saving oil or gas, which are non renewable resources, in comparison to other plastics whose composition depends entirely on oil. Usefully durable and 100% recyclable Plastics are often perceived as symbols of throwaway or single use. However, in reality plastics are durable materials that do not rust or corrode. PVC is an exceptionally durable plastic, used for instance in water supply and sewage pipes, which can last for over 50 years. Most of PVC products are used in durable applications. More than half of all PVC products are long life products with service lives of over 15 years.

Service life of plastics PVC is a material well suited to recycling. It has the longest history of recycling among plastics, and it is most advanced in mechanical recycling. For example, in Japan about 68% of end-of-life agricultural films (agro-films) was recycled in 2005 and used for flooring, etc. In Europe, more than 260,000 tons of postconsumer products were recycled in 2011 through industry-sponsored schemes. The accumulation of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere is considered a major contributor to climate change. Consequently, it is essential to control the emissions generated by human activities to protect the environment for future generations. Greenhouse emissions from Virgin PVC resins are comparatively low when compared to other materials. However, what the data from The University of Manchesters Carbon Footprint tool Calculator shows, is that recycling PVC can help to reduce carbon emissions to one sixth those of virgin PVC. Recycling PVC offers a great opportunity to produce low carbon products, Most PVC is used in building products such as pipes, walls, floor coverings, cabling and window frames. Improving recovery of PVC waste and identifying where recycled PVC can increasingly be used in such applications will help improve the carbon footprint of buildings and our lifestyles.

Upon completion of this project, I have learnt so many things as well as I have got the opportunity to help for charitable works. I was very fortunate to find myself in suck a group in which everyone of use collaborated and came with such good ideas, which we eventually turned into a reality even though we had many ups and downs. Going to the orphanage every week made us emotionally attached to the place and the children as well. This particular project will always be remembered by many of us and I feel so proud to have done such a noble work. No matter what grades we get, I think that it is high time that the coming generations know about the human touch. I would like to thanks Mr. Sivabalan, our lecturers who helped us enormously, my group members and the plumbers without them whom this project would not have been a success.

This project spoke to me louder than I thought it would. Its really not about the project, its more than the project. I feel like its a lifetime memory that we can be proud of for generation. Almost like, we actually made a 'difference' for once in our lives. Its everything all together, experience, the teamwork, and the memory, the feeling of willingness to help for the better, just to see the smile on their faces. Touches the heart really. Because imagining how and what the children have to go through, constantly being reminded that they have absolutely no parents, makes us feel bad, sad and taught us to appreciate our own parents more than we already are, and it pulls my heart to give them whatever possible help to put a smile on their face, and to light up the burden. I believe that, even small things can make a difference. Its really a life changing opportunity.

We had the chance to interact and work hand in hand with those less unfortunate than us, and I think it is a big eye opener towards the hardships they go through everyday to make it. Apart from minor problems such as technical difficulties and delays, I believe this project went smoothly and successfully.

Sponsorship As brief, we are the middle party for this charity work from chain of company, us and the shelter. The sponsorship for this project is from Telekom Malaysia apart from our own personal budget. This sponsorship helped us a lot in this charity work especially for the piping items and other miscellaneous. Furthermore, its enhanced morality for all of us in a group in completing this charity work. Our sponsor:

CONCLUSION During and after all of the project done, we felt that this charity work is more towards emotional feeling rather than the importance of getting marks for the subject itself. The involvement of different outsider for example the plumber gives us the meaning of true charity value which is happiness of people surrounding especially the kids. Apart from that, we achieved the awareness of relationship of architecture and environment can contribute to positive value for community and people that need attention from capable society which is us. This kind of activity also should be done continuously from time to time, always be update and be able to serve community through our own capabilities. Once again, this charity works gives us happiness and good experiences and be able to set example for the future students and volunteers. Lastly, we would like to appreciate and very thankful to our lecturers and university for giving us the chance to perform this charity works.
