BRITISH HIGH COMMISSION HANDOVER OF SECURITY EQUIPMENT AT JKIA ON 18TH JULY 2013 SPEECH BY KAA CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD,

PROF. MUTUMA MUGAMBI, MBS His Excellency Dr. Christian Turner, the British High Commissioner to Kenya Vickie Hutchinson, Regional Aviation Security Liaison Officer, Representatives from the British High Commission, Nairobi, KAA Staff and representatives of other GoK departments, Invited Guests Ladies and Gentlemen,

It gives me great pleasure to host you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport this morning. This event establishes another milestone for a collaborative project to enhance the capacity of our airports to run safe and secure operations. Your Excellency, allow me, to give apologies of Eng Michael Kamau, the Cabinet Secretary for Transport and Infrastructure who would have wished to be here today but was engaged in another important State function.

Your Excellency, allow me to convey to the British High Commission KAAs sincere and deep appreciation for the cooperation and continued support to the Authority and the aviation industry in this region as a whole. Todays handover of Standard Test Pieces for X-Ray machines, Walk- through Metal detector Test Pieces, Hand Held Metal detectors and Screening Trays is evidence of your commitment to the up grading of security at our airports.

Distinguished guests, KAAs mandate is to ensure the growth of Civil Aviation in the country through the development and management of airports. In so doing the resultant commercial activities are expected to contribute to the expansion of our national economy. It goes without saying that we cannot achieve these developmental goals without mitigation of the ever present security threats. Here we do recognize that one of the major challenges faced by the aviation industry world over is terrorism. As a partner in the global airport systems one of our key objectives is to put in place reliable airport security and safety systems that meet the global standard. To this end we have in the past two years been implementing a heightened security regime, which focuses on an optimal mix of man and machine, to ensure a return on investment in airport development. Airport development is highlighted as a key driver for accelerated economic growth envisaged in the Governments Economic Blueprint - Vision 2030. For public information substantial support with regard to airport security has been offered to the Government of Kenya by the British Government through the Kenya

Airports Authority. In the last two years alone we have been beneficiaries of support which includes: Training of; 37 security Managers in Aviation Security 18 participants for Train the Trainer Course, 36 participants for Supervisors Course, 100 participants on Explosive Trace Detection and 8 technical security staff in Trace Detection Equipment.

Additionally, in 2013, four (4) of our management staff have been sponsored by the British Government to attend an Aviation Security Seminar in London. We also have an ongoing mentorship program at Jomo and Moi International airports. Further we are recipients a of several Explosive Trace Detection Equipments which have been deployed in JKIA and Moi International Airports.

As we know security cannot be achieved by one Individual, department, or organization. Security is a collaborative effort of individuals and agencies. To this end I would like to acknowledge the good relationship KAA enjoys with the law enforcement agencies including the regular Police, Admin Police, the GSU, NSIS and CID. Thanks to you. Once again allow me to thank the British High Commission and by extension the British Government for the continued assistance to the Authority. It is now my pleasure, to call upon Your Excellency, the British High Commissioner to Kenya Dr. Christian Turner, to give your remarks.
