What is Concrete?
{ {

{ { {

Rock, Sand, Cement, Water Most used Building Material on earth - 1 cu. Yard per person/year. Its a Liquid Rock! Most people ignore it Others complain about it

Cement-a Key Ingredient

{

{ { { { { {

Made from Limestone-very common material 3,400 degrees Kilns burn waste tires, haz. wastes 1 ton of cement = 1,800 lb CO2!!! Per person about 750 lbs./year US Demand is over 100 million tons 85 Million tons is US produced 23% of cement is imported

Cement is to Blame!

Or Is It?

Cement is to Blame!
{

Or Is It?

Since 1975, the cement industry has improved energy efficiencies by 33 percent. Today, the cement industry accounts for less than 1.5 percent of U.S. CO2 emissions, well below other sources such as electric generation plants (33 percent) and transportation (27 percent). According to the Department of Energy, U.S. cement production now accounts for only 0.33 percent (1/3 of 1 percent) of energy consumption the lowest level compared to petroleum refining at 6.5 percent, steel production at 1.8 percent, and wood production at 0.5 percent

Washingtons Biggest Polluter

THE CAR
1 gallon of fuel produces 20 21 0.952 lbs CO2 MPG lbs CO2/mile

Oh Excuse me.

MPG for SUV leads to

THE COW
methane production Methane traps meaning equivalent in CO2 which is approx. At a unit weight of leads to in US that is 550 25 13750 613.839 44 27008.93 59.5439 L/day times more heat than CO2 L/day moles/day grams/mole grams/day lbs CO2/day

Therefore driving an SUV

62.5

miles/day has the same CO2 production as a cow

I do specify Green Concrete. I request 40% Fly Ash. I was told

10/10/2007

What about the Fly Ash?

{

{ { {

Lowers Heat of Hydration Increases density Increases durability Decreases permeability Ready Mix Industry has been using ash for 25 years.

In 2001, the Concrete Industry used 11,400,000 Metric Tons of Fly Ash

HVFA Mixes:
{ { { { { { {

Sticky Slow setting and slow strength gain Not best choice in Winter builds C Can affect ff t critical iti l path th Additional Care in specifying the places to use HVFA Mixes Admixtures increase costs. What is the Goal? Is the goal met?

Hard pavement collects runoff and sends it downstream. Concentrated Runoff is created.

Pervious pavement keeps rainfall on site by Infiltration & Dispersion No Runoff is created.

Designing Pervious Concrete Pavement Structure

{ { {

Define loading condition Assess soil support value Select thickness based on flexural strength (MR=375 psi) Check against overweight loading
z

thickness increase can increase strength and life expectancy by 33% to 50%

Storage Capacity
{ { { { {

Storage capacity typically governs design Depends on porosity of pervious pavement and subbase 1 of pavement with 15% porosity can store 0.15 1 of #67 stone base with 40% porosity can store 0.40 4 pavement on 6 subbase can store 3 of rain

Myth
{

Use of pervious concrete will somehow change the soil beneath, or the stormwater falling on it. Fact:
z

Use of pervious concrete surfaces effectively replicates an undeveloped condition. Period. Pervious concrete is a material, a tool. It is not a product, not a system. Pervious concrete is a hard flat strong durable surface that allows water to run through it.

Fact:
z

13

10/10/2007

What Does it really have to do?

{

The most extreme storm event in recorded Puget Sound history had a net rainfall of about 1 per hour.
z z

Greater intensities, shorter duration Longer durations, lesser intensities.

Hurricane Katrina off the coast of New Orleans was measured by NOAA at 0.98 per hour. Measured permeabilities of pervious concrete specimens range from around 200 per hour to over 1,000 per hour.

Frank Lloyd Wright

My buildings will last at least 300 years! Began using concrete as early as 1889. Concrete is so flexible and simple as to be almost unbelievable.

As the design & construction professionals recognize that operating a building over time is far more energy intensive than developing it, demand for durability and energy performance is growing. Architects, engineers and builders are choosing concrete for its durability, recycled ingredients, and energy efficiency not found in other building materials like steel or wood. When compared with other building materials, concrete is a responsible, wise choice for sustainable development.
