Small description of the match (extra-ordinary incidents etc.): Second semifinal at this edition of FIFA Under-20 World Cup, played in Trabzon, Turkey, in front of a crowd of approximately 3000 supporters. Iraq performed well under defensive aspects but failed to create chances to score a goal. Uruguay however were dominant in most parts of the match but were lucky to score a late equalizing goal leading to extra time and the decisive penalty shoot-out. The match never was unfair and revealed only a couple of challenging situations for the match officials from Sweden. The referee had to deal with a normal level of difficulty.

Basic Observations (refer to the general application of the LotG, highlight the referees tactical approach, personality, match control, management of the teams and players, teamwork etc.). Please deploy short but precise and detailed sentences! Positive Points Card management. All cards issued were correct, specially the yellow card in the 1. 106th minute of play was well spotted (the elbow was deployed in a reckless but hidden manner). Management of additional time. One very long injury of the Iraqi goalkeeper 2. lasted more than five minutes (54), so that he correctly added eight minutes of added time. Man management and his ability to clearly and understandably explain his 3. decisions to the players. He earned respect for his decisions by that. Good verbal warnings. As soon as they did not work anymore, he issued cautions 4. (starting in 56). 5. Alertness for wrong throw-ins (57). 6. Match Control during the whole ~135 minutes.

Points for Improvement Although Eriksson seems to be relaxed and friendly in his player management, he sometimes just whistled and looked grimmy at players who partly had already 1. turned their backs to the referee. He should improve this way of dealing with players. He should improve his movement on the pitch (more diagonal) and stay a bit farer 2. way from play. He once nearly interfered with it (84). The referee repeatedly allowed the players to steal some metres at throw-ins 3. (e.g. 82).

Further observations (peculiarities of the referee revealing his character) A friendly and calm referee who however has the ability to adapt his style to the requirements of the match if needed. His man management was very good, can be improved in one facet though.

Assistant Referee 1
Please assess the first assistant referees performance. Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the ARs behaviour 33 36 65 68 105+1 Very tight offside due to contrary movements, well seen. Correctly flagged a foul leading to the 1:0 goal after a free-kick. Correct offside (URU player gained advantage from a rebound by the Iraqi goalkeeper having been positioned offside). He talked to the Uruguayan coach and calmed him down. He protested because of some longer injuries which he classified as time-wasting. AR1 made him clear everything will be added on top of the regular time. Correct offside, not easy. Very good performance overall.

Assistant Referee 2
Please assess the second assistant referees performance. Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the ARs behaviour First involvement in the match: he missed an offside (interfering with an 116 opponent), as an Iraqi player who was positioned in offside obstructed the Uruguayan goalkeepers line of vision before his save. Correct and very tight offside. The replays were blurred but one may conclude it 117 was a good call.
