Statistics Chapter 3

Data descriptions and Measures of Central Tendency Mean, Median, Mode Standard Deviation
Quick View The most familiar way to look at data is to take the average of the set of numbers. In chapter 3, we will delve into numerous other ways to look at data. The level of mathematics has increased with these new topics, but you will nd our step by step approach easy to use.

Objectives After completing Chapter 3, you will be able to: Summarize data using measures of central tendency such as mean, median, and mode. Describe data using variations such as range, variance, and standard deviation. Identify positions of data using percentiles, deciles, and quartiles through the use of z-scores. Explore data using box plots.

Activity 1
Mean, Median, Mode, & Mid Range Class Activity Section 3-1
Mean The sum of values divided by the number of values. The mean should be rounded to one more decimal place than occurs in the raw data. Median The midpoint of the data. If there is an even number of values, the median is the average of the middle two terms. Mode The value that occurs the most. If no value appears more than once, then no mode exists. If more than one value occurs the most, then you may have multiple modes. Midrange Average of the lowest value and the highest value.

Mean, Median, Mode-Activities

Video Activity Please create an infomercial selling mean, median, and mode for a fth grade student to watch. The video should be entertaining and informative enough for students to understand how to use mean, median, and mode. Groups for the project: Jake, Rose, Chloe Rachel, Laura Katie, Brittany, Kyle Trent, Corey Excel Project Use the information on page 113 of your textbook to calculate the mean, median, and mode of: 10,11,15,21,13,13,15,15,17,21,11

V ariance Standard Deviation

Overview Sometimes statisticians need more than mean, median, and mode to describe data accurately. Range Highest value minus lowest value. Variance -For Population The average of the squares of the distance each value is from the mean.

Standard Deviation-For Population The square root of the variance.

Example Find the range, variance, and standard deviation for: 35, 45, 30, 35, 40, 25

Reading Questions
