AIRCRAFT Air India incident resulted in loss of life of all on board, together with explosion at Narita Airport (Japan) during transfer of baggage to Air India aircraft. Pan Am 103 incident resulted in death of 259 persons on board aircraft, as well as 11 persons on the ground at Lockerbie (Scotland). UTA 772 incident resulted in death of 171 persons on board aircraft after leaving Ndjamena (Chad). Xiamen Airlines (China) seized, during landing aircraft went out of control, presumed pilot attacked, collided with another aircraft, killing 127 persons and injuring 53. Air France aircraft seized at Algerian airport by four persons dressed as airline staff - three hostages killed. Aircraft flown to Marseilles (France) where four hijackers killed. Ethiopian Airways B-767 destroyed in an attempt to ditch in the sea as it ran out of fuel following seizure shortly after take-off from Addis Ababa Airport (Ethiopia). One hundred and twenty-five persons killed, including the hijackers, and 50 people injured. Ariana Afghan Airlines B-727 was hijacked after take-off from Kabul Airport on 6 February 2000. After stops at Tashkent (Uzbekistan) and Aktyubinsk (Kazakhstan), it arrived at Sheremetyevo Airport, Moscow (Russia). After refuelling, the aircraft departed across Europe and landed at Stanstead Airport, London (United Kingdom). Following negotiations, all on board were released on 10 February. Sabena Airbus Flight SN877, on approach to Bujumbura Airport, Burundi, was shot at by machine gun fire. Damage to the aircraft was considerable. A flight attendant and a passenger were slightly injured. American Airlines flight AA11, a B-767, departing Logan Airport in Boston at 0745 hrs. for Los Angeles, was hijacked by terrorists who crashed it into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York at 0845 hrs. Eighty-one passengers and 11 crew were killed. In total, 1592 persons were killed. United Airlines flight UA175, a B-767, departing Logan Airport in Boston at 0758 hrs. for Los Angeles, was hijacked by terrorists who crashed it into the south tower of the World Trade Center in New York at 0905 hrs. Fifty-six passengers and nine crew were killed. In total, 1565 persons were killed. American Airlines flight AA77, a B-757, departing Dulles Airport in northern Virginia at 0810 hrs. for Los Angeles, was hijacked by terrorists who crashed it into the Pentagon at 0939 hrs. Fifty-eight passengers and six crew were killed, together with 120 people at the Pentagon.

United Airlines flight UA93, a B-757, departing Newark Airport in New Jersey at 0842 hrs. for San Francisco, was hijacked by terrorists. It crashed in Stony Creek Township, Pennsylvania at 1003 hrs. It is believed the aircraft was headed for the White House or another prominent Washington, D.C. building, yet passenger action taken against the hijackers caused the aircraft to crash in an empty field. Thirty-eight passengers and seven crew were killed. Arkia Airlines (Israel) shot at by shoulder launched surface-to-air missiles on departure from Mombasa, Kenya. No casualties.

AIRPORTS 1972 Tel Aviv (Israel): Thirty killed in attack at Lod Airport, one person from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and three members of the Japanese Red Army killed. Weapons hidden in airside toilet. El Al aircraft targeted, but was delayed, so Pan Am aircraft attacked, together with Lufthansa aircraft hijacked to Athens (Greece); 30 killed. Approach to El Al check-in. Three Arabs with machine pistols spotted by police and killed. Benigno Aquino assassinated at airport.

1985 Rome (Italy) and Simultaneous attacks at airports. El Al passengers targeted at check-in area. Vienna (Austria): Grenades and assault rifles used. Twenty-two people killed and 110 persons injured. 1986 Seoul (South Korea): Bomb in airport arrivals hall killed six persons and injured 30. Designed to disrupt Olympic Games. Airport bombing and off-airport ticket office, nine killed and 123 injured.

1992 Algiers (Algeria):

1994 Johannesburg (South Africa) Explosion in a car parked outside the International Departures Lounge - 17 injured. 1994 London (U.K.): Several mortar devices fired at airport runways causing extensive disruption to airport operations. Explosion in a rubbish bin in the Departure Lounge - 35 injured. Explosion at the airport - four killed and 70 injured. A group of Tamil Tigers conducted suicide attacks at Bandaranaike International Airport and adjacent Air Force Base. Several military aircraft and eight civil aircraft were destroyed or damaged. Fourteen perpetrators and seven military guards were killed in the attack.
