Hearing postponed until July 17 for women accused of running house of prostitution
By Ben Baird

ROMULUS Four women who allegedly ran and operated a house of prostitution at Holistic Touch and Gifts in Van Buren Township appeared briefly July 3 in 34th District Court. A two week adjournment was granted and the preliminary examination of the evidence against the defendants is now scheduled for July 17 before Judge David Parrott in the Romulus court. According to Van Buren Township police, Kimberly Qualls, owner of Holistic Touch and Gifts, 41015 E. Huron River Drive, along with employee Lena Worrell from Monroe and two other employees operated the massage parlor as a front for prostitution. Qualls and Worrell were arrested May 23, while Andrea Romano, Westland, and Amanda Wolford, Wyandotte, were arrested the following day. Qualls, Romano and Wolford were arraigned

on felony charges of keeping a house of prostitution and prostitution. Worrell was arraigned on charges of keeping of a house of prostitution and disorderly conduct in a house of prostitution. The attorneys representing the women met with Judge Brian Oakley in his chambers before the new hearing date was officially set. Joseph Delaurentiis, the attorney representing Wolford, said the adjournment will allow for additional time for discussion as talks continue with the Wayne County prosecutors office. When the defendants previously appeared in court June 5, he said they waived the right to have the hearing within 14 days of their arraignment. Seymour Schwartz, the attorney representing the other defendants, said during the June 5 hearing that there was still extensive discovery needed and he requested a 30-day adjournment at that time. Police have been seeking a fifth woman with

an active arrest warrant in connection to this case. The Van Buren Township building and zoning department revoked the occupancy permit for Holistic Touch & Gifts by the time of the arraignment, prohibiting the business from reopening. Township police first received information in February indicating the massage therapy business was operating as a front for prostitution. The Police Departments special investigations unit began an investigation involving both undercover operations and keeping the business perimeter under surveillance. After completing the investigation, police forwarded the investigators report to the Wayne County prosecutors office for review. Austen Smith contributed to this report. approval from the City Council July 1 to close a portion of High Street along Horizon Park from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 20 for a boat show. The closure will permit the first Belleville Lake and Land Sports Show to be held from noon to 5 p.m., and to allow vendors to set up and take down booths and exhibits. Wolters said that I-94 Marine and Cabelas will display boats and boat accessories for sale. He added that the CBC is allotting 10 additional spaces for residents to display or to sell their boats during the show. Janet Millard, Belleville Area Chamber of Commerce representative, said the Belleville Rotary Club and the Huron River Watershed Council would support the event, which also will feature a disc jockey, face painting and a bounce house for children. A&W and the Twisted Rooster restaurant will sell food at the event. Police Chief Gene Taylor said he didnt expect a problem closing a part of High Street, rerouting traffic that normally follows High Street to other adjacent streets.

In other business, the council unanimously approved a change to the procedure for resolving departmental issues brought up for a vote. The change requires that all future actions for the administration of city affairs shall not be decided by the council until after City Manager Diana Kollmeyer has reviewed the item and has prepared a recommendation on the proposal. The summary describing the reason for the change in procedure says: On numerous occasions, requests have been brought forward to the council without a recommendation from the city manager. Mayor Kerreen Conley said the purpose of the new procedure is to ensure the city manager had had an opportunity to review and to recommend agenda items coming to the council for a decision.
