INSTRUMENT TRANSFORMERS

CTH
Current Transformers 72.5 to 765 kV

For years, tens of thousands of CTH have been installed all over the world. In all types of climates and under even the most severe conditions, our units give complete satisfaction to the most exacting customers. The CTH operates both as a sensor and an essential interface between the high voltage transmission network and the low voltage systems. The great success of this series is the achievement of a very careful design entirely focused towards addressing two major goals : security and long life.

Linking the Power Chain

TOP CORE DESIGN AND PRIMARY WINDINGS

The "inverted CT" design, with active parts in the head offers particular advantages for large currents. The primary is normally a straight bar type conductor. A series-parallel primary arrangement is also available, utilizing external links to change the ratio. This maintains the output and accuracy of secondaries at all ratios. The top core design also has the advantage of spreading the primary winding in an uniform and symmetrical way around the cores, avoiding local saturation and reducing the leakage flux.

PAPER-OIL INSULATION
The insulation between the primary and secondary is made by winding multiple layers of paper which are situated between two armatures, namely the low voltage shell and the outer conducting screen connected to the high voltage side. The high dielectric strength paper is dried and degassed. Afterwards, it is impregnated with a high grade mineral oil. This process is accomplished through a strictly controlled protocol, under vacuum in a heated tank. To protect the paper-oil insulation from the ambient air, the CTH is closed by a stainless steel bellows which can withstand the effects of both ambient air (ozone) and mineral oil. Due to its corrugated construction, this bellows can follow the changes in volume of the oil without producing the slightest increase or decrease of the internal pressure. As a consequence, the paper-oil insulation is perfectly protected against ageing. Two other facts which contribute to a long life : > The temperature rise of the inverted current transformer is very low under normal service conditions. > AREVA T&D's instrument transformers have no partial discharges well above the operating voltage.

CORES AND SECONDARY WINDINGS

The cores are made of ring-type high-grade silicon steel for protection and metering current transformers, or high-grade nickel iron for high accuracy metering current transformers. Low remanence air gap air gap cores or linearized characteristics cores can also be supplied.

INSULATOR
The head of the current transformer is mounted above a porcelain insulator suitable for the required voltage and environment. The standard CTH resists medium intensity seismic events. For highly active seismic regions, the design is adapted accordingly (special porcelain insulators, damping device at the base of the transformer). Custom design options also include the utilization of composite insulators which can be quoted on request.

MAINTENANCE
The CTH current transformer is a reliable apparatus that requires only a limited amount of maintenance operations. Its role of sensor and interface is essential for effective and secure network operation. However, preventive maintenance carried out by experts is recommended to ensure the longevity of your installations and the safety of your personnel. We offer you a full range of services, from preventive maintenance, to corrective maintenance to " la carte maintenance" or replacement of material. As instrument transformer experts for many decades, you can always count on our expertise and our spare parts stock. We have the necessary resources to help you keep your installations operating efficiently, reliably and without risks for your employees

EXPLOSION-PROOF DESIGN
In case of an exceptional catastrophic failure (direct lightning strike for instance), the CTH current transformers reduce considerably the consequences of such failure, thanks to the following design arrangements : > Reduced oil volume, > Internal ground conductors with sufficient cross section for handling the fault current, > Tank head designed to prevent projection of parts in case of fault, > Special design to prevent the transmission, inside the porcelain insulator, of the over-pressure wave that originates in the head at the time of the fault. The efficiency of this design has been tested in various laboratories and the porcelain remains intact.

CTH maintains accuracy with minimal maintenance during a life-time of at least 30 years.
