LAWRENCE AREA SCHOOL

Community Newsletter

Dear Parents and Friends of the School The recent SNOW was indeed a significant event. The winter wonderland appearance belied the damage that was happening. Like many residentces and businesses in Lawrence the school suffered damage to spoutings and trees. The closure of the school for two days is equally damaging as it negatively impacts students learning, something that should not be under estimated. We are never-the-less one week further through winter - the optimist would proclaim that SPRING is just around the corner.

As a school we have recently joined the Fonterra Milk for Schools programme. Students in Yr 1-6 have the opportunity to enjoy 180ml of chilled milk each day. The nutritional benefits of milk for children are well known. Mrs Hughes Year 5 and 6 students have the responsibility for organising refrigeration and distribution. They also play a role in recycling of all containers; Recycling is an important aspect of this programme. We are indebted to the generosity of Fonterra. Kind Regards

REPORTS and PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS:

School Reports for all students will be posted home at the end of this week. Parentteacher interviews are scheduled for Week 2 of the new term. Forms for these are attached to the reports. We are hoping to meeting with 100% of parents, so please return these forms at the start of the term.

Thank You: At the recent Board Elections two long serving members
decided to stand down. The school community is indebted to both Mrs Victoria Crawford and Mr Keeley McLaughlin. Victoria Crawford served six years on the Board as a parent trustee. Her focus in the last three years was finance as well as policy and procedure. Victoria helped the school manage its budget in tough financial times. She helped rewrite and improve a myriad of policy documents producing sensible guidelines for the schools operations. Thanks Victoria for your commitment and sage advice has been most appreciated. Keeley McLaughlin served three years on the Board. Keeleys focus was school property, capital works and maintenance. He liaised with contractors as they completed projects such as the Room 1 upgrade and the Home Economics Room upgrade. He took real pride in ensuring that students had attractive classrooms. Thank you Keeley for your excellent work on behalf of the school.

Gifted and Talented Education at LAS At Lawrence Area School we are committed to meeting the needs of each student. We are currently undertaking professional development in identifying and catering for students who have exceptional talents or abilities in any number of areas. As a part of this process we welcome parents to contact either the classroom teacher or the GATE co-ordinators at any time to discuss the learning programme of their child. The Gifted & Talented Education co-ordinators at Lawrence Area School are Gillian May and Rachel OConnell. We also have the book Nurturing Gifted and Talented Children - A Parent-Teacher Partnership available to parents to borrow. Please contact Gillian or Rachel. We plan to hold parent information evenings later in the year and will welcome all parents to attend.
