Live and learn in one of the most popular student cities in the world
As the worlds first industrialised city, Manchester has its roots firmly in innovation and business.
The unique, cosmopolitan character and varied ethnic mix give the city its unofficial title of the best student city in the UK. The city attracts students from a broad range of backgrounds and countries. A celebrated city of culture, Manchester offers something for every taste. Whether its world-class museums, international cinemas, theatres, opera, ballet, comedy, music, sport or shopping, its all here. Music plays a major role in the city, both historically, and through the international bands that constantly visit the city. It has many music venues from intimate clubs and bars to the 21,000 capacity Manchester Evening News Arena. The shopping is spectacular too, from large malls to independent and boutique shops selling unique clothes and vintage treasures. As you would expect, there are many cafs and restaurants to suit all budgets and tastes. Youll find a wide selection of restaurants with menus from around the globe, including the famous China Town in the city centre, and the Curry Mile in Rusholme, which is home to over 150 Asian restaurants and businesses.
Manchester is such a great city; really good shopping, lots of art galleries, great night life, and fantastic libraries and sport facilities. Theres so much going on.
Helen Butterworth BA (Hons) Design and Art Direction
The Millennium Quarter in the city centre is great for shopping, including The Triangle shopping centre, Selfridges and Harvey Nichols selling luxury brands

Experience Cheshire
Experience Cheshire
Our Cheshire campus, situated in Crewe, offers a lively, friendly community set in safe and relaxed surroundings. Renowned for the excellence of its educational, dramatic and sporting programmes and facilities, our Cheshire campus is situated just 36 miles (58 km) south of Manchester city centre.
The campus itself is within easy walking distance of the mainline railway station, with direct services to London, Birmingham, Manchester and towns in Cheshire. A 70 million campus development programme has just been completed, with brand new facilities including the Cheshire Contemporary Arts Centre with drama, dance, music and sound recording studios, and a world-class Exercise and Sports Science Centre including state-of-the-art laboratories, sports and fitness facilities and 3G football pitch. Students at MMU Cheshire experience the best of both worlds with nearby National Parks, as well as access to several cosmopolitan cities. Crewe is a thriving town with theatres, cinemas, and lively pubs and bars, with the surrounding areas in Cheshire offering everything from modern shopping, trendy cafs and bars to heritage gardens and houses. While the campus is large enough to provide an impressive range of facilities, it is sufficiently compact enough to ensure a close and friendly community atmosphere. The majority of new students are guaranteed on-campus accommodation in our range of halls of residence. Crewe is one of the cheapest university towns for private accommodation and if you need to find part-time work youll find local jobs advertised through our campus Jobshop.
The Crewe campus has been a really good place to come to university. Its quiet enough to study, but the social side is really good because everybody knows each other. There are loads of sports teams to join and the lecturers are all really approachable.

Learning support
Learning support
We work very hard to provide you with an outstanding student experience
Teaching styles
On most courses, your learning will consist of a mixture of formal lectures, seminars, practical classes and tutorials. Lectures are a series of timetabled talks to provide a starting point for a subject matter, which is then followed up with your own independent study and attendance at seminars. Seminars are usually made up of smaller groups than in lectures, and you have the opportunity to discuss topics in more detail with your tutors and fellow students.
Study support
We have a range of support services to help you with your learning and get the most out of your studies. This includes personal support from your tutor, advice and guidance from student support officers, and our online resource Skills Online, which provides resources in time management, help with assignments, group work, writing, giving presentations and note taking. There is also free English language support for international students in every faculty.
12

Liam Downes BA (Hons) Marketing Management, now employed as Branding and Operations Manager
The University found my placement for me, and this placement has been one of the best things about the course. Ive been getting a lot of contact from the University and always getting emails about opportunities, which is really helpful. The department is really supportive too, you can tell them what you want and theyll always point you in the right direction.

Our sports facilities include basketball and volleyball courts, fitness studios, squash and badminton facilities, as well as two Olympic-sized swimming pools. Our Crewe campus also has a fantastic, brand new 10 million Exercise and Sports Science Centre, providing a world-class facility at the heart of the campus.
16
Ive had the opportunity to try lots of new things such as different sports, and new cultural activities. Theres a wonderful choice of sports and other clubs, which are relatively cheap to participate in, and Ive joined quite a few. There are lots of other students here, and so many events to take part in, so you will never be bored. Ive participated in or volunteered for lots of different events. The student population is so diverse, and Ive made so many friends from all over the world, who I can visit after my studies!

Nicola Ross
Immigration and Welfare Manager, MMU International Im based in the All Saints campus in Manchester, but I also work in Crewe. My role is student facing, so I work on student orientation and on welcoming new students, making sure they are settled in Manchester, and helping with visa issues. It is essential for us to have international students at the University so that we internationalise our education, and so that local students have a global education. Manchester Metropolitan University Internationals support is important so that students dont have additional barriers to their academic study; to make sure they get all the support to achieve whilst here, and to ensure they can make the most of their time in the UK. I would advise international students to do their research before they arrive; the more information you have, the more comfortable you are going to feel. It may be difficult at times but remember, no question is a stupid question. We want you to come to us with your questions whatever they are. Were here to help, and youll be happier with the answers you need.

University accommodation
University accommodation
Dont worry, theres plenty of accommodation in Manchester and Crewe for everyone but we suggest you apply early
Most of our accommodation is on campus, or a short walk or bus ride away. All EU and overseas students in the first year of study will be able to secure accommodation in halls of residence, either in university or private halls, provided you are studying for the full academic year, hold a firm offer and submit your application by 15th August.
University halls of residence
Youll find an excellent choice of residential accommodation in our six university-owned or leased halls in Manchester and a further two halls at our Crewe campus. We offer a choice of both en-suite and non en-suite bedrooms in shared flats and traditional style halls, that are self-catered. Broomhurst Hall of Residence in Manchester is catered from Monday to Friday during term time. Our halls of residence are large apartment blocks with single-study bedrooms and either private or shared bathroom facilities. All study-bedrooms are equipped with beds, wardrobes, desks, chairs, drawers and bookcases. Towels, bedding, crockery, cutlery or similar items are not provided and so you will need to buy these when you arrive. If youre self catering, youll share a kitchen with several other students. These kitchens are well-equipped with cookers, refrigerators and kettles, as well as cupboards and lockers for food storage. Its a good idea to cook and eat with other students its cheaper and a good social event. Our catered hall provides 10 meals a week from Monday to Friday during term time only and at set times. These are based on British tastes and diet, so they may be a change to what you normally eat. All our halls of residence have a 24-hour security presence, so that you can feel safely at home in your new space. Staff are also available during the day to help you with any queries and all halls have a warden, supported by assistant wardens, or residential advisers to provide support in the evenings and at weekends.
I live in Cambridge Halls. There are 10 people in a flat which means that I have got to know lots of different people from different places. The security is really good and I feel well-protected.

When considering the cost of your studies, it is not just tuition fees that you have to take into account. You will also need to cover the cost of accommodation, food and other basic expenses
Cost of living
The cost of living in the Manchester region is considerably lower than London and many other world cities. Also, many shops, restaurants and services offer special discounts for students which can help to keep costs down. In addition to your tuition fees you will also need to budget for the cost of living during your time at university. The North West is one of the cheapest regions in the UK; you will need approximately 7,500 a year to cover food, accommodation, transport and other basic expenses. Please bear in mind that the cost of living in the UK rises by about three per cent each year, and if you bring your family youll need to bring additional funds.
Scholarships
Vice-Chancellors International Scholarship The University has a comprehensive scholarship programme for full-time students paying overseas fees. In 2011 we allocated around 200,000 to international students. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of: academic merit what you expect to gain from the course you are taking what you intend to do after completing the course. Further details and the application forms are available at: www.mmu.ac.uk/international/scholarships
Family discount
If you are paying full-time overseas fees and a member of your immediate family is also studying at the University, or has recently graduated, then you may be eligible for a five per cent discount of your fees. Biology
Biology includes many areas of study to interest and excite, all of which impact upon our lives and the wellbeing of everyone around us. Biology is the scientific study of living organisms and covers a wide range of disciplines. Our courses will teach you to think and behave like a scientist and as a student of our school you will benefit from new laboratory facilities with state-of-the-art equipment. The majority of routes will give you a thorough education in all aspects of biology and typical areas of study include biomolecules and cells, comparative physiology, introductory microbiology, genetics, populations and biodiversity, DNA changes and disease among other topics. Our graduates may go on to develop their careers in a range of subject-specific roles in the biological, pharmaceutical, clinical, medical, public health and other associated industries.
Manchester Metropolitan University provides all of the elements needed to be successful in research. The tutors are very accessible and committed to their fields of expertise, and the labs are so well-equipped that I can tailor my research in whichever direction I choose.

Fashion
We offer a range of courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level covering the complete fashion supply chain and our fashion courses have a history of producing highly successful graduates. Our awardwinning BA (Hons) Fashion degree has in turn produced many award-winning graduates, including Rebecca Thomson who won the first prize Gold Award at Graduate Fashion Week in 2010. The University houses fashion and textiles equipment of a standard found in industry and our dedicated technical teams and academic staff help students to get the most out of these facilities. Our academic staff are specialist practitioners and researchers and many of them have a wealth of experience of working within the industry. Graduates of both our creative and business fashion courses find employment in all sectors of the industry from high street chains to independent design houses. Recent graduates are enjoying successful careers around the globe with companies such as Dolce & Gabbana, Viktor & Rolf, Abercrombie & Fitch, Topshop and Puma. The optional placement year, available on some of our courses, also helps students to gain great experience.
The tutors on our course are all industry experts and event managers themselves, so the course content is very relevant and embedded with real life experiences. Its been a challenge balancing study with full-time work but being able to relate the course directly to my role has been really effective. The support Ive received from day one has been excellent and my route leader has been there every step of the way. The technical staff in the workshops are brilliant and very knowledgeable, which makes it easy for us to learn a new technique or how to use a new piece of equipment.

Mechanical Engineering
You will gain a broad, in-depth understanding of the principles of engineering by studying the design and manufacture of engineering systems, learning practical engineering skills and carrying out a range of laboratory experiments in brand new, state-of-theart workshops. From here you will specialise in your own area of interest and have the option to transfer between courses as many of our BEng degrees share a common first year. Our courses are professionally accredited by both the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Successful completion of an undergraduate programme could take you on to one of our postgraduate courses where you will be given the opportunity to gain excellent work experience on the Formula Student racing car project.
Sport Science
The Universitys outstanding sports facilities and expertise in sport science led to Manchester Metropolitan University Cheshire being named an official pre-games training camp for the 2012 Olympic Games. You will be taught in the new 10 million Exercise and Sport Science Centre. The Sport subject area is designed to offer you a rounded education experience of sport which will give you a range of subject-specific and transferable skills that will greatly improve your job prospects when you graduate. You will also benefit from our involvement with the national governing body of sport coach awards, sports coach UK, coaching workshops and there will be the opportunity to engage in professional training in sports development.
I can honestly say that being pushed intellectually, really using my brain and having to apply ruthless logic to solve complex problems has been more rewarding than anything Ive ever done. Ive been heavily involved with Formula Student, the University competition where student teams from across the UK and the world design and build a single-seat racing car and race them at Silverstone. Not only has this given me extra practical engineering experience, but Ive been able to develop my project management, team-working and leadership skills on a real, live project which is excellent preparation for entering the job market.
Ashley Sinclair BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering
Manchester Metropolitan Universitys Cheshire campus has a friendly, small community feel. Everybody knows each other and the tutors know us by our first names which I really like. As an international student, studying with students from all over the world, you will be able to build-up increasingly independent viewpoints that are not tied to a specific culture. You will learn new ways of looking at the world, both from your experiences inside and outside the classroom. Studying in an internationally-renowned city, you will have a unique experience which will prepare you for life, and you should seize this opportunity with open arms and mind."

*In line with UKBA regulations in order to progress to Manchester Metropolitan University students must meet the overall English language requirements as detailed in the above table with no component below grade D.
62
"INTO Manchester provides an opportunity for international students to really experience student life in a smaller, more caring environment before they become full-fledged university students. However we also treat our students like young adults and so they have greater responsibility for their own progress; rather than being spoon-fed, as happens in many other schools. All of our students have a desire to learn from the students and I like their innovative approaches to memorising articles several of my students have taken photographs of my whiteboard when they want to note information of use to them."
63
I have made new friends from different countries and improved my English skills. My confidence is better from studying this course. We had to do at least one or two presentations every week in front of the whole class, which helped me to be able to speak to lots of people at once and my confidence in English-speaking generally is better. I have gained a lot!
Yu-Ning Huang, Taiwan English for University Study
64
Giving you the academic English skills you need to study effectively on your INTO course and university degree.

You will develop your English language and academic study skills, as well as research skills at higher levels. Through studying a range of modules, you will develop a greater command of written and spoken English, as well as the academic study skills that are critical for successful study. You will initially focus on developing core English language skills, developing your knowledge and confidence in: speaking and pronunciation listening reading writing grammar vocabulary. As well as developing your core skills, you will focus on skills relevant to your study. These include: teamwork problem solving critical thinking time management quantitative and qualitative data analysis.

Assessment on the course is based on the different modules you have taken during your course and will give you a clear indication of your progress. Methods of assessment may include: written assignments presentations research projects reading, writing and listening examinations.
65
Class sizes are small and provide the opportunity for you to ask questions and get more personalised support from your teachers
Modules
Language Development
The emphasis of this module is upon developing your understanding of grammar, increasing both your general and academic vocabulary, as well as improving your accuracy in spoken English. The aim is to ensure that you can communicate your thoughts clearly, both in writing and speaking.
Course outcomes
Successful progression
Assuming you have met the academic entry requirements for your chosen programme, success on the English for University Study course offers assured progression to the following courses: International Foundation* International Diploma in Business* Graduate Diploma*
*S ubject to meeting Tier 4 student visa requirements.
Project
At the higher levels, you will be asked to work on a project which will prepare you for university-style teaching and learning methods, as well as the importance of independent study. Forming part of the overall assessment for the module, you will undertake an extended research project making use of both primary and secondary resources. Through directed self-study and tutorial classes, you will work with your teachers to identify key areas that need to be developed in order to improve the quality of your project. You will also be required to deliver a presentation on your work.
Academic Writing
This module helps develop your academic writing skills through the study of sentence structure, vocabulary and academic writing conventions. By looking at different texts, you will learn how to construct a clear and logical argument within a piece of written work through appropriate organisation of your ideas, adopting a suitable writing style and taking into account the needs of the reader. You will learn about the importance of avoiding plagiarism and how to incorporate the idea of others while using your own words. An important part of academic writing is process writing and as part of this module, you will produce written drafts with feedback from your tutor and, as your level increases, work on your writing in individual tutorials with a tutor.

Emma Williams
Head of Student Services, INTO Manchester
"The most important thing I have learned over the years is that a genuine smile is the simplest way to put someone at ease, make them feel safe and help them to feel more confident in their communication. All of my team have travelled, have children or know how much their own parents have worried about them in the past, so we can empathise with the students and parents. I am very proud of the work we do at INTO Manchester and we would welcome anyone to come and join us."
Travelling to Manchester
If you are arriving in the UK for the first time, we strongly recommend that you fly directly to Manchester or pickup a connecting flight at one of the other international airports that have direct links with Manchester, such as Amsterdam, Dubai and Paris. These routes are preferable, as you will avoid the hassle of transferring through London and the additional travel time. For students arriving at Manchester International Airport, we offer an airport pickup service from the airport to your accommodation, at an additional charge. If you want to make use of this service you will need to provide the INTO Admissions Office with your full flight details in advance of your arrival date. Full details of the pickup service are provided with your confirmation documents.
Pre-departure guide
You will receive a pre-departure guide containing practical information which will help you prepare for travelling to the UK, arriving in Manchester and enrolling on your course of study at the Centre. The pre-departure guide is also available as a mobile app enabling you to find useful information, upload and view photos and videos, access Google maps and find your way around the campus. The guide and mobile app also includes information to help you adapt to living and studying in another culture, booking your airport pickup and confirming your arrival details. www.intohigher.com/mmu/pdg

Social activity programme
While the main reason for coming to Manchester is to study, involvement in non-academic activities is also important to help you adjust to life in the UK and develop a network of friends. The city of Manchester offers a wide variety of options for socialising, experiencing the arts or taking part in sports. INTO also organises a regular programme of activities designed to help you make the most of your time in the UK. The programme includes trips to places of interest in Manchester and other parts of the UK, as well as visits to the theatre and cinema. Full day excursions cost between 1540 per person, depending on the activity. Other social programme activities are charged at variable rates ranging from free to 25 per person.
Orientation programme
When you arrive, you will attend an Orientation programme, carefully designed to introduce you to life and study in Manchester. It is important that you attend the orientation, which includes a formal academic induction where you will register for your course, take an English language placement test, receive your timetable and select your modules for academic programmes. A tour will introduce you to your new home including the INTO Centre and the nearby city centre and public transport and amenities. It will also include social activities, which are a great way to meet new friends and explore the city of Manchester.
24-hour support
The Centre is dedicated to ensuring that you feel totally safe and supported. Upon arrival, all students are issued with an emergency telephone number which can be used to contact Centre staff outside of office hours in the unlikely event of an emergency or urgent situation. Within the halls of residence, 24-hour support is provided by our Residential tutors.

Live as part of a vibrant student community in one of our single study-bedrooms. All of the rooms benefit from an en-suite bathroom and access to shared kitchen facilities
Homestay accommodation
Homestay accommodation provides students with a home-away-from-home. INTO Manchester has a network of carefully selected homestay hosts who welcome international students into their homes. You live as part of the family, in a single study-bedroom, sharing mealtimes (breakfast and evening meal) and all the other facilities in the home that you need. Homestay accommodation gives you first hand experience of British family life and culture and is an excellent way to develop conversational English.
Standard homestay
You are expected to keep your room clean and use the laundry facilities. Internet access is not always available (although it is available at the Centre) and specialist diets such as vegetarian and halal are not always catered for.
Homestay:
single study-bedroom shared family bathroom two meals every day to include breakfast and one main meal with lunch at weekends access to laundry located in and around Manchester.
Superior homestay
This kind of homestay has all the facilities of standard homestay except it has guaranteed Internet access within the house and most specialist diets are catered for. Students have two loads of laundry washed and ironed and their bedroom cleaned each week. However, you are expected to keep your room tidy.
Living in New Medlock House was the best experience for me. First of all, I made many international friends and learnt about their countries, and living with so many students also helped to improve my English. As the accommodation is located in the city-centre, it was a very convenient and comfortable place for me to live.
