The New York City Montessori Charter School (NYCMCS) will open its doors in Community School District

7 in September, 2011. All children who will be entering Kindergarten or 1st grade in September are invited to apply. The NYCMCS will provide families with an alternative for the education of their children, offering an educational program that will reach a broad range of students supplemented by educational programs for families. What is a Montessori school? Montessori schools follow the ideas of Maria Montessori. She was the first woman to receive a medical degree in Italy, an anthropologist and a pioneer educator. Her educational ideas are based on her observations of how children learn in diverse cultures. Among others, she discovered that: Children are naturally motivated to learn. All children are different. They are interested in different things, they are different stages in their development, and they learn in different ways. Some learn best by listening, others by watching. Others learn by interacting with things around them: observing, touching, building things, moving things around, smelling and even tasting them! Some learn very quickly and others work slowly and deliberately until they master something. On the basis of these observations, Dr. Montessori developed an approach to education in which teachers: Use childrens natural motivation to learn, and stimulate it. Respect and value individual differences by preparing different learning activities for each child activities that take into account the childs individual needs, interests, and learning style. Allow children to progress at their own pace, regardless of ability level or age. Encourage children to help one another and collaborate. Today, Dr. Montessoris findings influence teachers in schools throughout the world. In the United States alone, some 200 public schools and close to 5,000 private schools trust in the proven success of the Montessori approach. Maria Montessori was twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for her work with children. What is a Montessori classroom like? Montessori classrooms are attractive, bright, inviting spaces. Attractive learning materials that appeal to all the senses and stimulate logical thought and discovery are laid out on shelves around the room. Children work with these materials on their own or in collaboration with a friend. One teacher goes round the classroom observing and helping them as they work. A second teacher works with small groups of children to give them lessons on particular topics. Is Montessori right for my child? All children are welcome in Montessori classrooms. The Montessori approach works with all kinds of children and all kinds of learners, English language learners, and children with special needs. How will the Montessori approach benefit my child? What is a charter school ? Charter schools are public schools that operate according to a five-year performance contract or "charter." They are held accountable for students academic performance and specific goals set forth in their charter. Like all public schools, charter schools must meet state standards, as well as state and federal laws regarding health, safety, civil rights and student assessment. Also, charter schools are open to all students and cannot discriminate in their admissions' process. Often there are more interested students than available slots, in which case charter schools must by law choose students through a random lottery. NYCMCS will hold its lottery in mid-April. We will notify all applicants of the date and location.

Algunos aprenden rpidamente mientras otros trabajan lenta e intencionalmente hasta que dominen la tarea. Basndose en estas observaciones, Montessori desarroll un mtodo educativo en el que los docentes: Usan la motivacin natural de los nios hacia el aprendizaje y la estimulan. Respetan y valoran las diferencias individuales al preparar actividades de aprendizaje diferentes para cada nio/nia tomando en cuenta sus necesidades individuales, intereses y estilos de aprendizaje. Permiten que los nios/nias progresen a su propio ritmo, sin importar su nivel de habilidad ni su edad. Propician que los alumnos se ayuden entre s y sean colaboradores. Hoy en da, los hallazgos de la doctora Montessori tienen una gran influencia en todas partes del mundo. Slo en los EEUU hay aproximadamente 200 escuelas pblicas y 5.000 escuelas privadas que confan en el comprobado y reconocido xito del mtodo Montessori. Mara Montessori fue postulada dos veces para el Premio Nobel de la Paz por su trabajo con nios y nias. Cmo es un aula Montessori? Las aulas Montessori son espacios atractivos, luminosos que atraen a los nios. Tienen materiales atractivos colocados en estantes alrededor del saln que estimulan todos los sentidos y fomentan el pensamiento lgico de los nios/nias. Los estudiantes trabajan con entusiasmo, ya sea individualmente o con un compaero. Una maestra recorre el saln observando y ayudando a los alumnos mientras trabajan. Otra maestra rene pequeos grupos de nios/nias para darles clases sobre tpicos especficos. El mtodo Montessori ser bueno para mi hijo? Las escuelas Montessori dan la bienvenida a todo nio y nia. Qu es una escuela charter? Las escuelas charter son escuelas pblicas que operan segn un contrato con el estado, llamado un charter, el cual define los requisitos de rendimiento. Como todas las escuelas pblicas, las escuelas charter tienen que cumplir las metas del contrato y regirse por las leyes federales y del estado con respecto a salud, seguridad, derechos civiles y evaluacin de los estudiantes. Las escuelas charter admiten a cualquier estudiante y no pueden discriminar en su proceso de admisin. Frecuentemente hay ms aplicaciones que cupos, y en esos casos, las escuelas charter estn obligadas por ley a seleccionar a los estudiantes por lotera.
