PROJECT NO. 01 (2013)

PROJECT TITLE

The Last Odeon, Lisbon

An Odeon abandoned by its Community is in disrepair and a proposal to reinhabit the cherished building with cultural activities and products is put forward to satisfy the petitioners.

02 (2011) 03 (2010) 04 (2009)

London Zoo
Proposal for an Amazonian and Aquatic Research Institute in the heart of London

Ramillies Street: Oxford Street Antidote

Bringing the public closer to the process and technique behind the products they often consume on a daily basis without thought of its origin or creator.

Meanwhile Gardens
An urban garden in London disregarded by its community. My proposal creates a landmark for the green, a fantastical facade of literature that invites passersby to climb through genres and read them on the green.

PROJECT 01

THE LAST ODEON

Upon discovering The Odeon it became clear that there was an opportunity to reintroduce the neighbourhood into its abandoned buildings. Especially in the case of The Odeon; a building of historical significance and value to its community. The Petition started by the neighbourhood in December 2011 aims to prevent The Odeon (the last of its kind) from being eradicated and turned into a shopping centre - complete with underground parking. Instead the neighbourhood demands that it be restored or reinvented in a carefeul and inventive manner. This project aims to look at the potential of The Last Odeon to reignite the populations interest in embracing - and most importantly - using their buildings. In so doing the project seeks to reaffirm a sense of inhabitation into a seemingly broken and unused city. The petitioners and owners have proposed a new brief for The Last Odeon, one that satisfies both parties. The new purpose for the Last Odeon is to display what Portugal has to offer in wine, literature, food and art. The result is a cultural hub where both tourist and local can tap into the many products that Portugal has to offer. All the while the balconies and stage are kept in place as a haunting reminder of the past programme. The remaining stage and viewing pitt are functional too as they provide an arena for wine, art and 1st Edition auctions to take place. Not only this but readings and town meetings can take place after hours in the heart of the building. Just as the Odeon once represented a new and exciting place for visitors, once again it is reinvented to excite and invite its neighbourhood within. Now that cinema has become an ordinary ritual of life, The Last Odeon transforms its innards to a new and much needed purpose. A place in which both tourists and locals can meet, browse and escape to. Whether for literature, art, food or wine. The building can also simply serve as a meeting place in which the public can be observed wandering through its new programme.

Skylights in Roof Because of the change in program, the buildings heart has become the opposite of what it once was. There is a need to flood the heart with daylight, allowing the balconies to remain the more dimly lit spaces. Upper Floor An opportunity to install the bar / cafe at the lighter level, where the contemporary music store will also occupy. Upper Terrace Gallery 02 Gallery 01 First / Second Floor An observational floor, allows views down into the viewing pit where screenings may be taking place, or if not readers occupy it comfortably. The films can be watch from the balconies as cinema patrons are equipped with headphones. Ground Floor A level that appears a continuation of the street, by placing the lobby and commercial spaces around the periphery it means the building always appears inviting and occupied - even during screenings. The lobby entrance will provide views right through to the North Wall where the books and wine will be on display - immediately allowing people to see the other occupants now inhabiting the Odeon.

The Galleries The Galleries provide an opportunity for visitors to escape the more dimly lit spaces within and experience the sunshine and daylight. Their occupancy of these galleries will also bring life to the building for the pedestrians. Once again informing the neighbourhood of its occupancy and rescue

Gallery Screens The iron masonry with coloured glazing original is in need of repair. The masonry will be kept - but the coloured glass will not. Instead they will be offset from new, separate walls of glazing to provide a screen for the strong sun from the south.

Lower Ground The two cellars that exist in the Odeon can be converted into the wine cellar where wine tastings can take place alongside it. The back of the Theatre will also run down to this level and share the space. There is an opportunity to install a second projection room which will serve as a conference space as well, but as a screening room when the cinme ais being used for live performances

The New Structure To be slotted within the Old Odeon to reinforce and form new spaces within for the new program

Columns 2 Pins are structurally linked by the use of horizontal elements that essentially turn the two pins into a unified column. These elemetns occur more regulary on the outer columns and become less regular on the inner columns to lessen any visual disconnection.

Floor plates The columns are used to form horizontal elements which support the old and new floorplates. These horizontal elements conprise of 3 levels depending on their position and function (which dictates the load they need to take)

Structuring Voids When a void in the floorplate is created the necessary stronger level horizontal elements are adopted to ensure structural integrity for any cantilevers and larger spans.

LONDON ZOO

Proposal for an Amazonian and Aquatic Research Institute

Altering London Zoo Mappin Terraces / Altering the face of Zoos

A shift from anthropocentrism to biocentrism

The fundamental objective of the project is to reconsider the Zoo and its standing in society. The London Zoological Society, north of Regents Park, began as a place designed purely for scientific research. When it was eventually opened to the public, in a bid to generate income for its upkeep, it quickly became about entertainment and profit - with no regard for the animals wellbeing. Today, in an effort to regain approval from the public and mark a shift to a more concerned attitude towards the earth, there is evidence that Zoos are looking to become biocentric.

17

DESIGN INTENT
The project proposes the magic mountain is stripped of its unused skin to reveal the listed beams as part of a new frame. Within the high rising corridor of frames grows a large tropical biome, with a research institute feeding directly off it. Complete with labs, walkways and viewing decks for both researchers and visitors, the institute is dedicated to seed regeneration, research and education of all that we can benefit from the Amazonian biome. The researchers are very much a part of the attraction, the work and effort that so often goes unseen can be the most interesting to observe. Feeding off the base of the biome, on the other side of its river, remains the London Zoo aquarium. A labrynth of tanks and labs that maintains the darkly lit atmosphere that has come to define the ZSL aquarium. As in the biome, visitors are shown the process and research going into such work as regenerating communities and preserving coral. The key to this design is the sense of freedom visitors will have to wonder through its spaces and will continually be drawn on to the next intriguing space.

RENT A BOOT[H] Affordable Designer Studios
Bringing the public closer to the process and technique behind the products they often consume on a daily basis without thought of its origin or creator. A place in which independent young designers, inventors or even tailors can showcase their process by renting a boot[h]. Visitors are relieved of their shopping/handbags upon entry by the handbag halt that runs along one side of the building. Visitors wander amongst the designers workshops and pause within the spaces.

SECOND FLOOR PLAN

The boot[h]s create a sense of personal space for the designers. They function both as a studio and advertisment for their products as their space is on display for all visitors to see (both above and below). Some of the lounging areas are upstairs amongst the studios allowing visitors to socialise and watch as the designers work. The wall that filtrates the water for the fish pedicure can` be heard and viewed from nearly throughout the whole building. The green wall that filtrates the water runs up to the top floor, confirming the floors to be very much connected. Even those that leave their baggage at the ground level just for storage wil be able to hear the interior of the structure through the void created by the handbag halt.

1 ATRIUMS
The atriums are a result of the negative spaces created by the pathways and studios that intrude on the central space. Each one is different in size and creates thresholds to make moving through the structure more interesting and to create a sense of adventure and unpredictability after walking the monotonous length of Oxford St.

The plants provide an injection of green and the movement of water can be seen from Oxford St. Bringing an element of nature into the antidote that this building brings to Oxford Street. The green within connects the interior with the atriums outside. The studios and the wall are very much a part of the same space.

2 STUDIOS / BOOT[H]S
Visitors walk amongs the studios and are able to pause in the spaces between. The artists work-in-progress hangs above them. As if they are clothes for sale but in fact they are unfinished products. If one is interested in the product they are forced to engage with the designer.

5 SUMMER OPEN MARKET

Railings retract from floor plane to provide hanging for Summer markets. The space below becomes more inhabited and no longer just a dark and dingy pedestrian route. Even in winter the shelter provides enough space and seating for smoking employees to gather in a more inviting environment where they too can get a glimpse of the designer up above hard at work.

3 CAFE
The cafe provides a place for visitors to remain longer in the space. Often eating on Oxford Street is just a continuation of the chaos and noise. Views to the back of house offer intriguing and vastly different views of the area. A reminder of the process and work that goes on behind the seemingly perfect act of consuming.

MEANWHILE GARDENS
An urban garden in London disregarded by its community. My proposal creates a landmark for the green, a fantastical facade of literature that invites passersby to climb through genres and read them on the green.

DESIGN ADAPTABILITY
These graphics were produced in order to represent the flexibility of the design and its ability to change with the curriculum and methods of teaching. The key to the design was the connection to the outside and the encouragement of outdoor learning.
