Rosa recalls Pioneers glory days

NATHAN DOLE
A LOT has happened in the 14 years since Simon Rosa first travelled from Brim to play his first match for the Bendigo Bank Pioneers Football Club.
Its been a road well travelled in which Rosa has played for the Pioneers, Carlton, Bendigo Bombers, Peel Thunder in WA and now Golden Square. Rosas play as a midfielder in the Pioneers from 99 until 2001 has him in the running for selection in the 30 greatest as the club celebrates 21 years. The first instalment of six in a series being run by the Bendigo Advertiser is the Selwood twins Adam and Troy, the silky-skilled Nick Dal Santo, ruckman Hugh Foott, and wingmen Rick Ladson and Simon Rosa. A dozen years after they played in Bendigos only appearance in a TAC Cup grand final, Ladson and Rosa are now team-mates at Golden Square. Ladson is a first-year coach at the Bulldogs, who are striving for a fifth consecutive premiership victory. There have been a lot of They were challenging times, but great times. I played a couple of matches for the Pioneers as a 16-year-old in 99, and then had two full years with the club. Like many Pioneers over the years, Rosa and his family racked up many hours and kilometres travelling for training and matches. Warracknabeal is two hours away from Bendigo, so it was a big strain, not just for me, but the family. In the second half of the 2001 season, Rosa boarded with Pioneers regional manager Ray Byrne and his family. The support network was fantastic, not just from Ray, but also from Neville Strauch, as well as coaches Rod Macpherson, and my first coach at the Pios, Brian Walsh, said Rosa. The 2001 team had many players kick on to play AFL, while others have made their mark in the Bendigo FL and other leagues across the state. It was a great team to be part of, Rosa said.

Simon Rosa
matches, a lot of highs, and some lows since those days, said Rosa, who will play a key role for Square in tomorrows battle of the BFNLs Bulldogs at Gisbornes Gardiner Reserve. Among the many highs have been premiership victories with Golden Square the past three years. Rosa said playing for the Pioneers helped develop his football in many ways.

ROUND 12 SNAPSHOT
MATCH OF THE ROUND
HARD to go past the battle of the Bulldogs at Gardiner Reser ve where fourth-placed Gisborne hosts fifth-placed Golden Square. The winner will most likely become favourite to grab third place, while the loser is probably destined to battle for fourth and fifth place. The pain of last years after the siren grand final defeat to Golden Square still lingers at Gisborne. To rub salt into the wounds Golden Square pounded Gisborne by 11 goals in round three this year. The return of James Bristow to Golden Squares line-up add spice to the game. The last time the star forward played at Gardiner Reserve he then had star on-baller Justin Wilson throw in an 11th-hour clearance to Bears-Lagoon Serpentine. A war of words followed. Hardly a good lead-up to a potentially season-defining clash with arch-rival Sandhurst. On a positive note, the Wilson off-field drama might just galvanise the Bloods on the field. A backs-to-the wall win over Sandhurst might just be the tonic to reignite Souths season. season against the Roos. The young Magpies won their first encounter this year by 17 points and will go into tomorrows clash at Beck Legal Oval confident of causing another upset.

THE FINAL WORD

Strathfieldsaye should have little trouble in defeating Maryborough which would see the Storm take top spot off Eaglehawk. The winner of the Gisborne and Golden Square game will be hoping South Bendigos misery continues against Sandhurst. Theres a strong chance that by 5pm tomorrow well have just two games seperating third and sixth place on the ladder. At the other end, Castlemaine must win to have any chance of avoiding the dreaded wooden spoon.

almost single-handedly won the game for Square as his seven goals helped turn a five-goal deficit into a five-goal win.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
For the first time in six years Castlemaine has the opportunity to score a season-sweep over Kangaroo Flat. Not since 2007 has Castlemaine won both matches in the same

Massive task for Gold on the Boroughs ground at Port Melbourne. Last weeks performance against Frankston was one of Golds best this season. Will be important to get the ball to the teams most skilful players, especially going into attack, to capitalise near goal. Port Melbourne by 55

FIRST and second on the ladder, Bendigo Thunder and Sunbury Lions meet in this Sundays 12th round in the Victorian Womens Football League season.
Thunder will be aiming for a 12th consecutive victory in its final home game of the season at Kangaroo Flats Dower Park. The versatile Emma Grant marked her return to Thunders attack by kicking five goals in last Sundays win against La Trobe University. Grant will be a major threat to the Lions defence. A talented Thunder midfield and onball brigade is led by Hayley Trevean, Jess Kile, Abbey Hay, Tish Stewart and Jess Blake. Key defenders Lil Waters and Michelle Barkla have been in great form throughout Thunders run. The Russell Jeffrey-coached Bendigo won hard-fought contests with the Lions in rounds two and seven. Fans can expect another great game as both clubs continue their build-up to the finals in a few weeks time.

Pioneers glory days

From Page 19
An awesome line-up included Troy Selwood, whose career of more than 180 games for West Coast include the 2006 grand final victory. Adam Selwood was among five Pioneers drafted to AFL clubs in 2002. He played 75 games for the Brisbane Lions and is still playing a key role with Geelongs team in the VFL. Dal Santo recently played his 250th match for St Kilda. Among the many highs of his career were grand finals for the Saints in 2009, and 2010 (twice), and selection in the All-Australian Team three times. Rick Ladson played 125 matches for Hawthorn, which included the 2008 grand final victory against Geelong. Hugh Foott was one of the Pioneers best in the 2001 grand final and is starring for Swan Hill in the Central Murray Football League. The clubs draftees from 2001 were Ladson and Daniel Elstone to Hawthorn, Dal Santo to St Kilda, Foott and Ashley Watson to North Melbourne. The Pioneers grand final opponent 12 years ago, Calder Cannons had the likes of Dane Swan, James Kelly and Jordan Barham star in the Cup decider on the MCG. While memories of 2001 are bittersweet, Rosa said playing TAC Cup was a great opportunity. He still takes a keen interest in the Pioneers and goes to games when he can. Bendigo is home for Rosa and wife Kristi and children Jake, 3, and Beau, eight months. Most of the Rosa clan Simons parents Col and Leanne, and older brother Luke and his young family now call Bendigo home. The youngest of the brothers, Matt is playing f o r We s t C o a s t w h e r e team-mates include Adam and Scott Selwood. Away from the football field, Simon Rosas landscape gardening business is flourishing, just like his football for the blue and gold.

YCW
ANOTHER dautning task for the Eagles as they try to hit back from last weeks 33-point loss at Mitiamo. Its been a difficult season for YCW, although young gun Nicholas Waterson continues to fire in every game. Will need experienced players such as Joe McKern, Steve Turner and coach Pat Jess to do well against a red-hot Pyramid Hill line-up. Best last week: Nicholas Waterson.

Pyramid Hill
ACHIEVED a brilliant win against Bridgewater on home turf at Mitchell Park last week. The Paul Grayling coached Bulldogs will be determined to build on the momentum gained from beating the Mean Machine. Marking power of Leigh Davies and Grayling will test YCWs defence all match, while James Pietromonaco is a key figure in a strong back half. Best last week: James Pietromonaco.

Bridgewater
WILL be desperate to bounce back from just their second defeat of the season. The Mean Machine was outran and overpowered by Pyramid Hill and will be determined to make amends against the Panthers. Key targets Brad Rohde and Alex Collins are likely to cash in on the chances set up by the likes of Zac East, Deon Jones and Callum Prest. Best last week: Jayden Exell.

Marong
AFTER a 77-point defeat at the hands of the ladder-leading Bears Lagoon-Serpentine, the Marong Panthers face another of the competitions powerhouses. The Corey Gregg-coached Marong has played brilliant football at times this season and still holds fifth place on the ladder. Marongs onball and midfield players will have to harass their opponents all match. Best last week: Corey Gregg.

Inglewood
THE Blues put in one of their best performances of the season to be within 26-points at the end of last Saturdays clash with Calivil United. Its match of the round status on Inglewoods turf as two clubs chase their second victories of the season. Inglewood beat the Roos in round four, but have had a seven match losing streak since then. Best last week: Joel Stevenson.

Mitiamo
CELEBRATED a long-awaited and hard-fought victory on home turf against YCW last round. Its been a long time since the Superoos have gone into a game with a great chance of achieving consecutive victories. The Dennis Grinton-coached Mitiamo will look to the likes of Alex Chapman, Brayden Baines, Mick Galvin to play well and beat the Blues, a feat it has achieved many times over the past 15 years. Best last week: Brayden Baines.

Newbridge
HAD the bye last round after a 105-point victory the previous week against Inglewood. An on-ball division led by ruckman Paul Pellegrino, the versatile Chris Belz and classy Simon Davies should set up plenty of scoring chances for the Maroons. Was pushed all the way by Calivil United back in round four, so the Phil Birchmorecoached Newbridge must be switched on from the start. Best last week: Bye.

Calivil United
WON a tough battle with Inglewood last week by 26 points. A talented midfield for the Demons includes Anthony Dennis, a winner of the Neville Strauch Medal as club champion at the Bendigo Pioneers. The play of Dennis, Henry Miller and Lloyd Maxted will be crucial to Calivil Uniteds hopes of beating Newbridge this time. Best last week: Jay McDonald.

Elmore
COMPLETED a recruiting earlier this week and will have former Sydney Swans Team of the Century player Darryn Cresswell line up in the centre tomorrow. Cresswells experience and skill will be a huge plus for the Tony Southcombe-coached Bloods. Elmore will be determined to play a lot better than last weeks 17-goal loss at Huntly. Best last week: James Drake.

North Bendigo
WAS pushed all the way by Mount Pleasant, so the Bulldogs cannot afford to relax in this match on Elmores turf. Named in the centre, North young gun Jordan Ford will gain a lot should he be opposed to Cresswell. An attack led by Michael Spooner, Aarryn Craig and Elliott Massina will be tough for the Bloods to hold over four quarters. Best last week: Jordan Ford.

Leitchville
THE Bombers will be fired up as they aim to bounce back from a 58-point loss at Lockington. Theres plenty at stake in this match on Leitchvilles turf as fourth takes on fifth. The Bombers teamed well to score a four-goal win at Heathcote when these clubs last met. Heathcote has improved a lot since then. Best last week: Bye.

Heathcote
AN exciting run of wins was ended last week as Lockington-Bamawm United proved to be too skilful, slick and strong for the Saints. The Grant Ford-coached Heathcote will be fired up as it knows its hold on the fourth rung is in jeopardy. Will need players the calibre of Ford, Marc Millard and Condon to win their share of contests as the centre ball-ups and stoppages. Best last week: Dallas Middleton.

LBU
THE Cats are on a seven-game winning streak and a formidable opponent on their home ground. Although coach Kahl Oliver is still on the sidelines, Lockington-Bamawm United has plenty of scoring power. A classy midfield includes Matt Bongiovanni, who was best afield in last Septembers grand final victory. Best last week: Liam Main.

Huntly
VICTORY in round two was just the second time Huntly has beaten LBU. The Stacy Fiske-coached Hawks showed no mercy as they beat Elmore by 105 points last round, but pressure from the Cats will be much greater on every line and will last all match. A Hawks half-forward line of Klein-Bretler, OToole and McErvale looks to be one of the strongest in the league. Best last week: Josh Harris.

Mount Pleasant
ALTHOUGH beaten, the Blues put in a fine performance to be within 16 points at the end of last Saturdays clash at North Bendigo. Its been a scenario thats happened quite often this season in which Mounts has not gone down by much. The Shaun Young-coached Blues will be desperate to break the trend in this match. Best last week: Chris Black.

Colbinabbin
PLAYED well to beat White Hills by five points last round and will be confident of achieving back-to-back victories. Form and ladder position mean little when the Blues and Grasshoppers meet. Although it will start favourite, Colbo must work hard in every quarter to ensure it takes the points. Best last week: Jacob Weppner.

MARYBOROUGH-CASTLEMAINE DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE Round 10
ROYAL PARK v CARISBROOK Royal Park rst-year coach Greg Stewart has transformed the Tigers from easybeats to a side capable of entertaining and attacking football. Would be upset of the year should Park win. Carisbrook the unbeaten Redbacks should add to their streak. Nathan and Nick Wright are in superb touch in attack, and the defence is strong. ROVERS v MALDON Rovers a winless season for the Magpies, who have had many injuries. A key for Rovers it keep the core playing list together for next year and chase a victory against one of the leagues more lowly clubs. Maldon the Dons have had a topsy-turvy season, so the return of gun midelder Tom Cain is a huge plus. LEXTON v DUNOLLY Lexton the fourth-placed Tigers are not totally reliant on Matt Brown to kick a lot of goals each week. Rob Mosby, Dan Chester, James Templeton, Jordan Phelan and Michael Jennings hve been standouts. Dunolly has lifted in recent weeks, and despite just two victories this season, cannot be taken lightly.

Birchip-Watchem: Does not become any easier for the winless Bulls after a 66-point loss to the in-form St Arnaud last round.

Donald: Teamed well to finish within 10 points of Wycheproof-Narraport after scores were level going into final term. Drew 82-all the previous round against Wedderburn.

Boort: The Magpies confidence is soaring after a seven-point victory against Charlton. An attack led by Rick Easton, Mitchell Buchanan will be tough to hold.

Wedderburn Crucial clash for the Redbacks as they fight to regain their place in the top four. A bye followed the 82-all draw at Donald in the previous round.

Wycheproof: Was pushed all the way by Donald last week. The second-placed Demons have the likes of Corey Jones, Matt Dillon and Brock Bish to set up or finish off attacks.
