CIRCLE, BANGALORE Details for the 6th protection sub-committee meeting on 19th May-2009 in the conference hall of SRPC, Bangalore. A. Major Generation Loss: 1. Varahi 1 & 2 units and Tannirbhavi 2 units on 31-12-08 at 13.09Hrs due to tripping of 220kV Varahi-Shimoga 1 & 2 lines on distance protection line-line fault Both 220kV Varahi-Shimoga lines tripped on distance protection at Varahi end and not tripped at Shimoga. Fault location was 0.3KM with line-line fault indication. 2. Kaiga 1 & 2 units on 29-01-09 at 05.55Hrs due to Jumper cut of Bidnal-3 line at Hubli station resulting in grid disturbance . At 220kV receiving station Hubli: 220kV Sharavathi-1 line was faulty from 3.34hrs of 29-01-09 due to decapping of insulator.. 220kV Sharavathi-2 line tripped at 5.46Hrs on 29-01-09 due to decapping of insulator. 200kV Nagajheri-1 line tripped on temporary fault at 5.46hrs on 29-01-09. 200kV Nagajheri-2 line tripped on temporary fault at 5.46hrs on 29-01-09. 200kV Nagajheri-3 line was faulty due to decapping of insulator at 12.03Hrs on 28-0109 itself. 200kV Nagajheri-4 line tripped on temporary fault at 5.46hrs on 29-01-09. 220kV Bidnal-1 line tripped at 5.46hrs due to insulator decapping on 29-01-09. 220kV Bidnal-2 line was in charged condition. 220kV Bidnal-3 line tripped at 5.46hrs due to insulator decapping and ground wire snapped on 29-01-09.

220kV Narendra-1 line was in open condition from 27-01-09 due to breaker trouble. 220kV Narendra-2 line was in charged condition.

At 220kV receiving station Narendra: 220kV Hubli-1 line was kept open due to breaker trouble at Hubli end. 220kV Hubli-2 line tripped at 4-20Hrs itself on 29-01-09 due to heavy fog. 220kV Ambewadi-1&2lines hand tripped due to tripping of both the lines on fault at Ambewadi. PGCIL ICT-1 & 2 tripped at 6-01Hrs.

At 220kV receiving station Bidnal: 220kV Hubli 1 & 3 line tripped at 5.44Hrs on 29-01-09 due to decapping of insulator. 220kV Hubli-2 line was on closed condition at both endss 220kV Harthi-1. Harthi-2 and Mahalingpur lines were faulty from 3.34hrs, 4.17hrs and4.48hrs on 29-01-09 due to insulator decapping. Due to multiple line faults on the same day and at the same time, there was total Bus shutdown at Hubli, Narendra and Bidnal. 3. Nagajheri 1,2,3 & 4 units on 29-01-09 at 12.38Hrs due to grid disturbance in KPTCL system causing tripping of all units at Nagjheri, Kadra and Kodasalli. Bus become dead at Hubli and Ambewadi stations. On 29-01-09 Nagajheri-1 & 4 lines only were catering the loads of Hubli, Narendra and Bidnal stations. Also Sharavathi 1 & 2 lines were faulty up to 20-30Hrs of 29-01-09.Due to tripping of these lines on overload at Nagajheri end, there was total shutdown of generating units at Nagajheri causing Bus shutdown at Hubli, Bidnal and Ambewadi stations. 4. Nagajheri 1,2,3 & 4 units on 30-01-09 at 07.31Hrs due to grid disturbance in KPTCL system causing tripping of all units at Nagjheri Kadra, and Kodasalli. Bus becomes dead at Ambewadi stations. Nagajheri-1 line hand tripped due to arcing in Isolator contacts at Hubli station. Nagajheri-2 line was faulty from 5.46hrs of 29-01-09 to 10.30hrs from 30-01-09.

Nagajheri 3 & 4 lines not tripped at Hubli end. Both the lines were tied at 7.59hrs at Nagajheri end.

Due to outage of all the above 4 lines, there was shutdown of generating units at Nagajheri resulting in Bus shutdown at Ambewadi. 5. Varahi 1 & 2 units and Tannirbhavi 3 units on 24-02-09 at 12.10Hrs due to tripping of 220kV Varahi-Shimoga 1 & 2 lines on distance protection. Both 220kV Varahi-Shimoga lines tripped on distance protection at Varahi end and only line-1 tripped at Shimoga end. B. 400kV Bus becoming dead: 1. Hiriyur 400/220kV station became dead on 30-12-08 at 0.22hrs. At 0.23hrs on 30-12-08, a. Nelamangala-Somanahalli 1,2 & 3 lines tripped on distance protection at Nelamangala station. b. 400kV Nelamangala-Hiriyur 1 & 2 lines tripped on over voltage relay at Hiriyur end and DT received at Nelamangala. c. 400kV Guttur-Hiriyur 1 & 2 lines tripped on over voltage relay at Hiriyur end and DT received at Guttur end. Due to above tripping, 400kV Hiriyur station became dead. 2 .Bus-2 became dead at Guttur on 03-1-09 at 9.29hrs. DT received from Kaiga-Guttur-2 line at Guttur end and due to breaker problem, LBB has been initiated causing tripping of all connected lines and ICTs. C. Removal of trees in the corridor of Kaiga and Nagjheri stations: As per the request of the Executive Engineer,El., TL & SS Division, KPTCL, Sirasi, letter has been addressed by the Conservator of Forest, Canara Circle, Sirasi to the Deputy Conservator of

Forest, Yelapura Division, Yellapura on 14-05-09 to furnish the details regarding action taken to identify and removal of trees in the corridor of Kaiga and Nagjheri stations.

D. Bus-Bar protections in KPTCL stations: Narendra: Somanahalli: Hooody : Approval of TCCM is awaited. Bus-Bar protection scheme is in service. The work involves replacement of CTs, changing the existing bus arrangement to rigid bus, providing new bus-bar protection panels. Preparation of Detailed project report is under progress. Station covered under modernization programme. Detailed project report for rigid bus is approved.

E. Providing Bus reactors at 400kV stations: TCCM approval is obtained for providing bus reactors at Hoody, Nelamangala, Talaguppa and Guttur stations and detail project reports are prepared and approval of DPR is awaited.
