Getting and Installing Adobe Reader 9


Open the Internet and go to www.adobe.com . Click on the Get Acrobat Reader button. Click to remove the choice for the Google Toolbar if desired. Click on the Download now button. Click on the Install button Navigate to the desired location to save the file. Follow the instructions, clicking on the appropriate buttons and making desired choices.

Opening Adobe Reader 9


Click on the Start button and go Start Programs Adobe Reader 9.

Which Version?
On the Menu Bar, click on Help About Adobe Reader 9. The screen indicates which version is installed. Click in the middle of the window to close it.

Getting Help
On the Menu Bar, click on Help Adobe Reader 9 Help. Navigate through the website for the desired information.

Toolbars
Toolbars can be adjusted as desired by the computer user. On the Menu Bar, click on Tools Customize Toolbars. The toolbars displayed by default are File, Find, Page Display, Page Navigation and Select & Zoom. To display a toolbar, click in the checkbox in front of the desired toolbar. To display tools in a toolbar, click in the checkbox in front of the desired tool. Click on OK. Moving Toolbars Toolbars are usually docked just under to Menu Bar. To undock a toolbar, click on the dotted line bar at the beginning of the toolbar and drag the toolbar into the document. To dock all toolbars, on the Menu Bar, click on View Toolbars Dock Toolbars. To dock a toolbar, on the Menu Bar, click on the title bar of the toolbar and drag it up to the Menu Bar. The toolbars shown by default are File, Find, Page Display, Page Navigation, and Select & Zoom.

Locking Toolbars Toolbars can be locked so they will not move. To lock the toolbars, on the Menu Bar, click on View Toolbars Lock Toolbars. To unlock the toolbars, on the Menu Bar, click on View Toolbars Lock Toolbars. This removes the checkmark in front of Lock Toolbars. Hiding Toolbars Toolbars can be hidden to provide more space to view the document. To hide the toolbars, on the Menu Bar, click on View Toolbars Hide Toolbars OR press F8. To unhide the toolbars, on the Menu Bar, click on View Toolbars Show Toolbars OR press F8. Button Labels Labels for each of the tools on the toolbar can be displayed, but they occupy a lot of screen space. Holding the cursor over a tool displays an explanation of the tool. On the Menu Bar, click on View Toolbars Button Labels and choose the desired label display. o Default Labels The default setting with few labels. o All Labels Displays labels for all tools. o No Labels Displays no labels for the tools. Resetting Toolbars Resetting the toolbars displays the default toolbars and restores original toolbar settings. The toolbars shown by default are File, Find, Page Display, Page Navigation, and Select & Zoom. On the Menu Bar, click on View Toolbars Reset Toolbars OR press ALT and F8.

Changing the View


On the Menu Bar, click on View Zoom and choose the desired option. o Zoom To - Opens a window where the desired zoom is chosen. o Actual Size - Displays the page the same size as the paper. o Fit Page - Displays the whole page on the screen. o Fit Width - Displays the full width of the page. o Fit Height - Displays the full height of the page. o Fit Visible - Displays the page from margin to margin. o Reflow Displays the page with all text and graphics against the left margin. OR on the Select & Zoom toolbar, click on the down arrow of the Zoom box and select the desired view. To zoom in, click on the Zoom In button on the Select & Zoom toolbar OR press Control +. To zoom out, click on the Zoom Out button on the Select & Zoom toolbar OR press Control -. To zoom to an exact percentage, click on the Zoom Value box, enter the desired percentage, and then press the Enter key. To quickly change to page width, on the Page Navigation toolbar, click on the Fit Width button. To quickly change to see the whole page, on the Page Navigation toolbar, click on the Fit Page button.

Marquee Zoom Marquee Zoom allows the user to zoom in on the document by selecting the area to be seen. On the Menu Bar, click on Tools Select & Zoom Marquee Zoom OR right click on the document and select Marquee Zoom. Click and drag over the area of the document to be zoomed in on. To turn off the Marquee Zoom, on the Menu Bar, click on Tools Select & Zoom Select Tool OR Hand Tool OR right click on the document and choose Select Tool OR Hand Tool. Dynamic Zoom Dynamic Zoom allows the movement of the mouse to zoom in or out on the document. On the Menu Bar, click on Tools Select & Zoom Dynmaic Zoom. To zoom in, click and drag up in the document. To zoom out, click and drag down in the document. Rolling the mouse wheel also zooms in or out. To turn off the Dynamic Zoom, on the Menu Bar, click on Tools Select & Zoom Select Tool OR Hand Tool OR right click on the document and choose Select Tool OR Hand Tool. Page Display Page Layout determines how the pages are arranged for viewing on the screen. On the Menu Bar, click on View Page Display and choose the desired layout. o Single Page Displays each page of the document as a single unit. o Single Page Continuous Displays the document as a series of pages from top to bottom which scroll through as the document is viewed. o Two-Up Displays the document as sets of two pages on the screen at the same time. In longer documents, the pages are matched to display them as if the document were a bound volume. o Two-Up Continuous Displays the document as sets of two pages which scroll through as the document is viewed. To show gaps between the pages, on the Menu Bar, click on View Page Display Show Gaps Between Pages. Full Screen View To view the document full screen, on the Menu Bar, click on View Full Screen OR press Control L OR click on the Full Screen View button on the Status Bar. To leave the Full Screen View, press Control L, OR press the Escape key. Rotate View To rotate the document, on the Menu Bar, click on View Rotate View and choose Clockwise or Counterclockwise OR on the Page Display toolbar, click on the down arrow and choose Rotate Clockwise or Rotate Counterclockwise. Each click rotates the document 90 degrees in the direction chosen

Moving Between Views To move to a previous view of the document, on the Menu Bar, click on View Go To Previous View. To move to the next view of the document, on the Menu Bar, click on View Go To Next View. OR on the Page Navigation toolbar, click on the Previous or Next buttons. Menu Bar The Menu Bar can be removed to provide more viewing area. To on the Menu Bar, click on View Menu Bar OR press F9. To display the Menu Bar, press F9. Automatically Scroll Automatically Scroll scrolls the document gradually through the window. On the Menu Bar, click on View Automatically Scroll. To stop the scrolling, on the Menu Bar, click on View Automatically Scroll OR press the Escape key.

Navigating a Document
To go to the beginning of a document, hold down the Control key and press the Home key. To go to the end of a document, hold down the Control key and press the End key. To move through the document one screen at a time, press the Page Up key or the Page Down key. To move to the next page, press the Right Arrow key. To move to the previous page, press the Left Arrow key. Go To On the Menu Bar, click on View Go To and choose the desired location. o First Page Goes to the first page of the document. o Previous Page Goes to the previous page in the document. o Next Page Goes to the next page in the document. o Last Page Goes to the last page of the document. o Page - Opens the Got To Page window where the desired page is entered. Click on OK. Page Navigation Toolbar On the Page Navigation toolbar, click in the Page Number box and enter the desired page and press the Enter To go to the next page, click on the Next Page button. To go the the previous page, click on the Previous Page button. to move to the desired page.

Navigation Pane
The Navigation Pane is the area on the left with the various buttons. Buttons displayed in the Navigation Pane are clickable to display the selected information. The standard buttons in the Navigation Pane are: o Pages Displays thumbnails of the pages of the document. o Attachments Displays items attached to the document. o Comments Displays comments entered on the document. o Articles Displays articles in the document. o Layers Displays the layers of a document, such as in a map. o Model Tree Displays models, both 2 and 3 dimensional. Showing the Navigation Pane The Navigation Pane is shown to the left of the document. If the Navigation Pane is not displayed, on the Menu Bar, click on View Reading Mode. Resetting the Navigation Panel Resetting the Navigation Panel sets them back to the original settings. Pages To display the Pages Navigation Panel, click on the Pages button in the Navigation Pane. If necessary, scroll through to find the thumbnail of the desired page. Click on the thumbnail of the desired page to display it. To hide the Pages Navigation Panel, click on the Pages button in the Navigation Pane OR click on the X in the top right corner of the Pages Navigation Panel. Attachments To display the Attachments Navigation Panel, click on the Attachments button in the Navigation Pane. Click on the desired attachment to display it. To hide the Attachments Navigation Panel, click on the Attachments button in the Navigation Pane. OR click on the X in the top right corner of the Attachments Navigation Panel. Layers To display the Layers Navigation Panel, click on the Layers button in the Navigation Pane. To hide a layer, click on the eye icon in front of the name of the layer. To display a hidden layer, click on the empty box in front of the name of the layer. To hide the Layers Navigation Panel, click on the How To button in the Navigation Pane. OR click on the X in the top right corner of the How To Navigation Panel.

Searching a Document
Find On the Menu Bar, click on Edit Find. Click in the box and type in the desired word. Press the Enter key. The document moves to the first occurrence of the word. Continue searching the document by using the Find Next button and/or the Find Previous button. Search Search locates and lists all occurrences of the word or phrase entered. On the Menu Bar, click on Edit Search. The Search window opens on the left. Type the word or phrase to be used in the box. The search can be done in the current document or in all documents in a particular folder. To search all documents in a particular folder: o Click to choose All PDF Documents in. o Click on the down arrow and select the desired folder. To search for whole words only, click to choose Whole words only. To search for the word or phrase in the same case as typed, click to choose Case-Sensitive. Click on the Search button. The results of the search are displayed in the Results box. To navigate to a particular search result, click on the desired result in the Results box. To close the Search window, click on the X in the top right corner.

Using a Document
Some documents are locked to prevent them from being copied or used elsewhere. To determine what is allowed in the document: o On the Menu Bar, click on File Properties. o Click on the Security tab. o In the Document Restrictions Summary section, notice the activities which are allowed and which ones are restricted. Saving the Text of the Document On the Menu Bar, click on File Save as Text. Change the name of the file as desired. Navigate to where the document is to be saved. Click on the Save button. Note Saving the text does not save the formatting.

Copying the File to Another Application All the text of a document can be copied to another application such as Microsoft Word. On the Menu Bar, click on Edit Copy File to Clipboard. Open the application the text is to pasted into. Paste the text into the new application by holding down the Control key and pressing the V. Note The program tries to keep as much of the original formatting as possible in the new document, but none of the graphics will be copied over. Copying Selected Text On the Menu Bar, click on the Tools Select & Zoom Select Tool. Click and drag to select the desired text. Copy the text by holding down the Control key and pressing C OR right click on the selected text and choose Copy or Copy with Formatting. Go to the document where the text is to be pasted. Paste the text by holding down the Control key and pressing the V OR Edit Paste. Copying Graphics On the Menu Bar, click on the Tools Select & Zoom Snapshot Tool. Click and drag over the graphic to be copied. Click on OK. Warning When the mouse button is released, the area highlighted is immediately copied to the clipboard. Note Everything in the selected area is included in the graphic. Go to the document where the graphic is to be pasted. Paste the text by holding down the Control key and pressing the V OR Edit Paste. Copying the Adobe Reader Window The Adobe Reader Window can be copied as a graphic. Hold down the Alt key and then press the Print Screen key on the keyboard. Go to the document where the graphic is to be pasted. Paste the text by holding down the Control key and pressing the V OR Edit Paste. Attaching to an Email On the Menu Bar, click on the File Attach to Email. Note The email program used must be set up as the default email program. An email message opens with the file attached. Enter the desired information and send the document.

Printing a Document
On the Menu Bar, click on File Print OR click on the Print button on the toolbar. In the Printer section, click on the down arrow and choose the desired printer. In the Print Range section, choose the desired pages to be printed. o All Prints all pages of the document. o Current View Prints the document as viewed in the Adobe Reader window. o Current Page Prints the page of the document currently displayed in the Adobe Reader window. o Pages from Prints the pages noted in the box. In the Print Handling section, enter the number of copies to be printed. Click on the down arrow of the Page Scaling box and select the desired scaling. o None No adjustments to the document are made. o Fit to Printable Area Resizes each page of the document to the selected paper size. o Shrink to Printable Area Reduces larger pages to fit the selected paper size but does not enlarge smaller pages. o Multiple pages per sheet Allows the user to print more than one page on each sheet of paper. o Booklet Printing Allows the document to be printed as a booklet. Printing Multiple Pages per Sheet o In the Page Scaling box, choose Multiple pages per sheet. o In the Pages per sheet box, click on the down arrow and choose the number of pages to be printed on each sheet. o To print a border around each page, click to select Print page border. o For a custom setup, in the Pages per sheet box, choose Custom, and then enter the desired number of pages across and the desired number of pages down. In the Preview section, make sure the desired arrangement is shown. Click on OK. Printing a Selected Area On the Menu Bar, click on the Tools Select & Zoom Snapshot Tool. Click and drag over the area to be printed. Click on OK. On the Menu Bar, click on File Print OR click on the Print button on the toolbar. In the Print Range section, Selected graphic should be selected. In the Preview section, make sure the desired area is shown. Click on OK.

Read Out Loud


Read Out Load is a feature in which the Adobe Reader reads the document to the user. The voice and reading ability of Adobe Reader in Windows is not very good. On the Menu Bar, click on View Read Out Loud Activate Read Out Loud. On the Menu Bar, click on View Read Out Loud and choose Read This Page Only or Read To End of Document. Click on the paragraph to be read. To pause the reading, on the Menu Bar, click on View Read Out Loud Pause. To stop the reading, on the Menu Bar, click on View Read Out Loud Stop. When finished using Read Out Loud, on the Menu Bar, click on View Read Out Loud Deactivate Read Out Loud.
