Committee: Security Council Country: United Kingdom Topic: Rebels in Congo Rebels in Congo is major global concern.

The Congo, located at the heart of Africa, has been oppressed for many years. Before World War II, the Congo was a colony of Belgium controlled by King Leopold. The area was known to have many rich resources and minerals. The name of the Congo was also changed to Zaire. Later, this territory had a dictator named Mobutu, centralizing all his power on himself to rule the country, which caused many civil wars, leading to the death of many innocent people. Mobutu tended to violate many human rights. Then, at the time that Uganda was ruled by military leader Idi Amin, his army forced Zaire`s leader out, changing to a new leader called Kabila, and a new party with a new name for this country called Democratic Republic of Congo. This is when the conflict began, and the people began to rebel. Kabila was offered to have the help from the Tutsis of Ruanda. Unfortunately, Kabila ignored Ruandas help and ordered to have the Tutsis expelled from Congo. This action provoked other problems among the people of Congo. They all began fighting for economic and political rights. Today, there are about 2000 rebels in the country of Congo. Aside from this conflict, Congo also has gold and large amounts of other minerals that have caused more oppression of their people, because other countries want to take advantage of these resources.

The government of United Kingdom is concerned about this issue. The United Kingdom is willing to support all efforts to aid this situation. One of the problems today, is that without order in the Congo, United Kingdom cannot make economic transactions to help this area. Also, UK representatives are at a high risk to encounter violence in the Republic of Congo. Because of this, our government has spent a lot of money for the safety of the British people there. It is imperative that other countries help this situation, as well as the oppression of the people in the Congo. Fortunately, The United Kingdom has obtained help from United Nations International, formed by 20,000 people, which is the largest peace mission in the world today. The government of United Kingdom proposes the following: First, to remove their dictator from power, and establish a democratic government, so that the innocent people can be rescued and the country can begin to respect human rights. Also, with the help of allied forces, United Kingdom could establish order and peace for the Congo. Finally, military forces from the UN should make sure that the fighting stops, and also that global help is obtained for issues of poverty, contaminated water, hunger and oppression from the neighboring countries. With these solutions, the deaths of so many innocent people can be avoided, and the Congo can become a better place to live, with an improved economic structure. Delegate: Diego Asnsolo
