LIGHT FROM THE EAST WM JAMES ANGELOS

June has been a very busy month. We ( the Lodge ) have a new brother, James Michael Thomas was initiated Monday the 17th, and will start his catechism soon. Working on bids for Insurance for the Lodge, ice machine, and of course the air conditioner replacement. The ice machine is to be installed Tuesday 25 June and the air conditioner to be installed 1 July. The air conditioner will take a few days to install. The Master's fund raising lunch. Some facts:60 Brothers contributed $2446.00. 50 sent in just the 6 tickets no donation. Several Brothers sent back their tickets with donations ranging from $10.00 to $50.00 plus. We served 185 meals and a profit of $1700.00. Again many thanks Brothers for the donations, and especially to the kitchen, and dinning room crew for their hard work. Every week from January until our last communication the officers had been practicing for work in ritual from the opening and closing in January and February to the conferring the Entered Apprentice degree on Monday the 17th of June. Many, many thanks go to those who made every practice session a must on their busy calendars. The Entered Apprentice Degree work showed the work. The "line" will start practice sessions again on the 9th of July. We will be doing work in the Fellow Craft Degree. Any and all Brothers are welcome to come and join us on our practice sessions. Until our Stated Communication on 2nd of July, enjoy the birth of our country, stay safe, and God Bless All. W:.M:. Jim Angelos
Chaplins Corner Brothers, received an email today and MW J. Dick Martinez has had surgery last week and is now at home resting. Please keep him and his family in your prayers. MW John Kavanaugh is not doing well and is on life support. He had rebounded and was talking and nearly ready to go home when he took a turn for the worse yesterday. He is in Florida Hospital in Sebring and they have inserted a ventilator. His blood pressure was very low and they were trying to raise and stabilize this before he could be sedated as he is very restless with all the tubes. His daughter Gari is here from Georgia and she is looking after Ms. Miki who is very confused and somewhat disoriented. Please keep M\W\ Kavanaugh and his family in your thoughts and prayers. These two men have led our Fraternity at its highest level and given us their all to make it as good as they possibly could. Please keep them in your thoughts.

Your Masonic Ring How should you wear your Masonic ring? With points of the legs of the compasses facing towards you or with the legs facing away from you? This is one of the most frequently asked questions directed to the Masonic Service Association of North America. Their response is that it may be worn either way. The two points of the compasses may point to the Brother to remind him of his obligation or the two points of the compasses may point toward others to show an outward sign of the wearers authenticity as a Master Mason. Respectfully, there are those who think otherwise. The author of an article I recently read on the Masonic Lodge of Instruction web site states the true Masonic ring is a signet ring that is used as a seal to validate the authenticity of the wearer. Signet comes from the word sign, meaning the ring provides a symbol, a sign, or signature to officially stamp or mark a document. According to the article, we are unsure the exact date Masonic rings began to be worn by the Fraternity, but signet rings have been a part of many cultures throughout history. Kings, Popes, Roman Emperors, and others have worn signet rings as a sign of their nobility, importance, and power. Probably the most famous signet ring in the world in use today is worn by the Pope. Therefore, a signet ring distinguishes an individual as one of high social standing a privileged person. In other words they provide a plumb line of authenticity proving that the wearer was not only truly who he said he was, but symbolized his power in the community. As time passed, tradesmen and merchants too began wearing these rings. Their signet had mottoes or logos cut into them. Like most other signet rings, a true Masonic signet ring has become unnecessary. Most of our documents today rarely include a waxen seal. Who today would want to spend time cleaning their ring after putting it facedown into hot was to make a seal? This leads us back to the question of how should one wear the ring. When the emblem of the Square and Compass is displayed on a building or a button, universal custom requires that the legs of the compasses point downward. When displayed on the altar, they point away from the Master. While you may wear your ring with the emblem facing you to help you remember your obligation, your Masonic signet ring is historically an outward showing to others denoting your seal of authenticity as a Master Mason. The emblem should therefore face away from you, both legs of the compasses pointing downward.

My Brothers All, I have the unpleasant duty to send out delinquent dues notices this month and it hurts me to do this. To date I have 43 Brothers who have not paid their dues for 2013. I had no choice but to send out the delinquent dues notices per Masonic Digest Art. X Sect. 20. Every member of a Lodge who is six months or more in arrears for dues shall be notified by the Secretary, and in case of failure or refusal to come forward and pay his dues, or give satisfactory excuse, within three months after such notification, may be suspended at the discretion of the Lodge. This is a harsh fact of life Brothers, that unfortunately the Lodge and your Secretary has to live by. I have no wish to see any Brother go NPD simply because of an oversight by him. If this is not the reason for your delinquency and we have done something to slight you or otherwise make you wish to leave Masonry then Please tell us what we have done or was done to you so that it can be corrected. No Brother should be left behind or ignored and as long as I am the Secretary of this Lodge, I intend to strive to keep that rule. I am very pleased to announce the Initiation of Brother James Michael Thomas into Freemasonry. Brother Thomas was brought into our Lodge on June 17th by Brother Bob Lovall. Thank you Bro. Bob. Hey ! How about that Bar-B-Que? That was some good eating! We had almost 200 people show up and eat. I was at the door listening to the comments and I heard things like Best BBQ Ive had in a long time. Man Im full! and Wow they really filled that plate up! I took that to mean they were happy with what they got at our Lodge. If you missed it this year, mark your calendar for next year and be sure to get your tickets. You dont want to miss it twice! That about wraps me up for this month Brothers. Here is hoping we can see you in Lodge or at one of our many fine meals or other functions. We have a lot of new stuff going on and it is all exciting and fun. Check us out! Until then, may the Great Architect watch over you and yours and Peace be in your hearts. W Hank DeBerry Secretary

From the South Hello Brothers, Another excellent Breakfast and Dinner served by the Kitchen Krewe At the June Breakfast, there were 45 meals served for a gross, before expenses of $283.00. The most recent Sunday dinner was held on June 9, and was met with some success. We served 55 dinners and had a net after expenses of $457.00 to the kitchen fund. By far the best dinner so far this year has been the Masters BBQ! This special dinner is an annual affair for the benefit of the Lodge. This year there were 185 meals served and they were excellent! The people raved about the great BBQ they had received in our Lodge! Tickets were sold through the mail and some Brothers really stepped up and helped out by buying the tickets and then returning them so someone else could use them. Brothers the totals are in and this year a total of $3003.00 was received! After the expense of food and drink for the dinner, we netted $1963.53 to the Lodge fund! That my Brothers is a successful dinner!

DISCOURSE
Comments can be send to jlageorge@bellsouth.net

Dear Brothers: It has been an interesting journey and I have enjoyed communicating with the Craft for nearly three years. I cannot tell you how much your comments and feedback has meant to me whether positive or negative, whether we engaged in an exchange of emails or just received your comments. It has been wonderful to find that we had Brothers that have received the Discourse as far out as Australia and the British Isle or who knows maybe further. I was really amazed as some of the Brothers in these countries made commentary of receiving the Discourse that had been forwarded to them by friends. I thank all the Brothers that recognized the value in the messages to forward them to other Brothers and more especially those that used some of the Discourses for educating their membership in their Lodge, that was especially nice to hear and it inspired me to continue in this endeavor. I always wonder how many Brothers received the Discourse not just through my email but also those that had been forwarded. Its interesting how this thing called internet can reach such long distances instantaneously. I dont know if we will ever find out, but it sure would be interesting to know. If you can help by dropping me a note telling me where you are and how many you forwarded it would be interesting tracking this last Discourse. It has been a true pleasure communicating with Masons that have the best interest of the Fraternity at hand and want to raise the bar in an effort to improve the quality of the membership and practice Masonry as it was intended. Masonry has always been selective, even in its operative state it was not open to everyone, and the trade was handed down from fathers to sons. As a matter of fact the concept of Grand Lodges was created to slow down the indiscriminate acceptance of individuals and create a standard with minimum requirements as to age, reputation, servitude, and belief in a supreme being. The concept started three decades ago of one day classes to turn around the eroding numbers due mainly to the non-payment of dues at least in the Grand Lodges in the United States. This has clearly not worked and has not had the effect of turning around the loss of membership. This is a cyclical event much like others in society and we have experience them before, during the 1800s and 1900s also followed by periods of growth. Anytime you experience a large influx of people during a certain period of time you must also expect to lose a large number of people down the road by normal attrition. We have been experiencing this the last three to seven decades depending on what part of the country you are in and when your Grand Lodge peaked its membership. There were several reasons for this, one we didnt worry for quite some time and by the time we started to address the situation we were behind the eight ball. Two those that experienced it later ignored what was happening in their Sister Grand Lodges as they were still having positive

Farewell

growth. Three when everyone decided that there was a problem as they saw it (I dont believe there is a problem) the response was to keep the Degree fees low and keep the dues down so as to bring in more candidates that can afford it, we lowered the requirements in the sense that catechisms were shortened or eliminated, no education required, we created the one day class and we basically laid to rest the high requirements and moral standards we had for nearly 250 years, and still we have not turned the loss around. Guess what you will never do it this way, it has never worked before, and it will not work in the future. You may ask yourself why is he saying that? The answer is simple, men coming to Masonry who are looking for a social club will never fit in and will soon leave or never participate, men who are looking for value such as personal and spiritual growth do not find it in our system today or lets say in very few places, and by far leave because you promise to make him better and you failed to deliver by lowering the requirements and not providing him the vehicle by which he can achieve your promise to make good men better, you failed to deliver on your promise. We are so afraid to stand up for the great things our Fraternity should represent and are tearing at the very fabric of this great Institution trying to make it inclusive of everyone. We have erased the clearly black and white issues of morality and have made a great shade of gray; we make excuses for wrong doing, we have lost our sense of justice, we continue to erode the deportment required in our assemblies and finally have lost all sense of gentlemanly conduct. The turnaround of our Fraternity will not depend on a leadership that by far changes yearly, the turnaround will depend on the membership which remains a constant and continuity of the Craft and therefore it will even be more difficult when the majority of the Craft have not been educated in Masonry and the only thing they know is the present system of lower standards and requirements. Only through research and education can we start to learn how to properly observe how our Craft was meant to be practiced. Stay the course Be a Leader; Make it Happen on your shoulders rest the salvation of the Craft. YOU need to be the one Brother in your Lodge that can make the change by educating and leading by word and deed those who have truly come to the Craft looking to improve themselves in Masonry both personally and spiritually. I charge each and every one of you to make a difference. In closing this will be my last Discourse, I like you will continue to work in the quarries of Freemasonry trying to educate my Brothers and promoting the best this Noble and Ancient Institution has to offer for higher quality, greater achievements, and better men around the world. I raise my prayers to the Great Architect of the Universe that we can turn this Fraternity around. Make this your commitment as a dedication to our three hundred year anniversary which is just around the corner. We may not get there by 2017 but at least we can be well on our way, we did not get here overnight but we can certainly start the movement towards the right direction one Brother at a time, one Lodge at a time and be the beacon of light and hope for this Fraternitys third century. Farewell my Brothers, God speed in all your undertakings may they be fruitful and influential, to the benefit of our great Fraternity. God Bless Freemasonry. Respectfully and Fraternally Submitted, I remain your most humble servant
Jorge L. Aladro Grand Master
My Brothers, the newsletters are intended to be thought provoking, to get you to think creatively, to get you thinking what if?, to dare you to improve yourself and your Lodge.

STROKE AWARENESS Brothers, chances are everyone reading this knows some who has suffered from a stroke. Roughly 795,000 Americans each year suffer from new or recurrent strokes which means a stroke occurs every 40 seconds. Stroke kills more than 137,000 people a year, which is 1 out of every 18 deaths which makes Stroke the No. 4 cause of death. I would like to take a few minutes to share with you some of the signs and symptoms of a stroke to help you become more aware. Strokes most often affect the elderly who have a history of atherosclerosis (fat deposits in the arteries), heart disease, or hypertension (high blood pressure). The signs and symptoms of stroke are associated with the specific area of the brain that has been affected by a disruption in the blood flow. It normally involves the areas that control our speech, sensation, and muscle function. The onset can be sudden and may, but not always, by accompanied by a seizure, headache, or dysphasia (inability to swallow). The most common sign of a stroke is paralysis, usually its only partial paralysis and affects one extremity or both extremities on one side of the body, and /or facial droop, in which there is a loss of facial expression on one side and the facial features droop downward. Some people when experiencing a stroke may only experience weakness in the arms and legs which may progress to paralysis. Another common sign is a persons mental status. Frequently stroke victims will be suffering from altered mental status, appearing confused and slurring their speech. They may also be suffering from dizziness, blurred vision in one or both eyes, headaches, or nausea. Here is a good four step evaluation process to give to someone you suspect is having a stroke. It is a valid stroke screening evaluation tool and has been adopted by most Emergency Medical Services. There are four steps to this test: 1. Ask the person to show you their teeth or give you a big smile. If they can only use the muscles on one side of their face to smile then they are experiencing facial droop which is a sign of a stroke. 2. Have the person hold both of their arms out in front of them and ask them to keep the arms extended and close their eyes for about 10 seconds. If one of their arms begins to drift or drop downwards that is a sign of a stroke and is called arm drift. 3. Ask the person to repeat this phrase. You cant teach an old dog new tricks. If their speech is slurred or they cant repeat the phrase accurately then that is a sign of a stroke. 4. Test their grip strength. Hold out your hands to the person and extend your first two fingers outwards. Ask them to grasp your fingers and squeeze with both hands, if you notice that one of their arms is considerably weaker than the other, and if this condition is not normal for them, that is a sign of a stroke. If you give someone this test and they fail even one portion of it, its important that you call your local ambulance service and get them to the hospital as soon as possible. Time is of the utmost importance when dealing with someone having a stroke. When you call they will ask you when was this person last seen normal. It is important to give an accurate timeline of when they were last seen normal. Healthcare providers at the hospitals have a short window of time, 3 to 5 hours from the initial onset, when dealing with severe strokes There may be times when someone you know is experiencing these symptoms and fails a portion of this test, yet minutes later they are back to their normal self and may not even realize something was wrong. In these cases it is still important to seek medical help. They may have suffered from what is called a TIA or Transient Ischemic Attack. The signs and symptoms of TIAs generally last no longer than 15 minutes and will most always resolve themselves within 1 hour of onset. But remember this, 30% of people who suffer a TIA will eventually have a stroke, usually within a month after the TIA so I would encourage you to seek medical help for anyone displaying these signs and symptoms. Freemasonry has promoted fellowship, it has nurtured brotherhood, it has practiced charity. It has education, it has been founded on truth and the cardinal virtues. But what is Masonry's greatest mission in life today? What should be the thrust of modern Masonry? Those are the answers we are presently seeking, and on our success in finding the answer depends the future of our Fraternity. - L. L. Williams Is our future secure in Freemasonry? Are we using everything we have learned over the past 300 plus years to make it a better Fraternity. I think we had better stop, step back and think this thing through more than we have. Yes, we have a Brotherhood and yes, we have Fellowship at all our meetings. Yes we practice Charity in our daily lives. We have given, even when we knew we ourselves needed it more. Oh yes, and it is founded on Truth, so here is some very real, hard, Truth Brothers. Yes, our Grand Lodge officers and our Lodge officers are trying their very best to hold this Fraternity together, but they cannot do it alone. We are faced with rising costs everyday and we meet them head on. The same men step up every time we need them and we use them until they are used up or fed up with being the only ones doing. We never think to say Thank you to the Brothers who have gone above and beyond to do the work needed. When is the last time you attended a Degree? Especially an EA Degree. The very most important work that a Lodge can do is bring a new man into our Fraternity. This is where our future lies Brothers! New men in our Fraternity! At the last EA degree I attended, I am very sorry to say that there was a total of 14 men there and 8 of those were the Officers putting on the Degree! Do you think that new brother had a favorable opinion of how he was met? How do you think those officers felt? They worked hard getting ready for that degree to make a good impression and for their own Brothers to not show up in support, is an insult to them and to the Lodge. It wasnt done to advance themselves because they cant advance until January if then. It was done, to make the newly obligated Brother feel that he was becoming a part of something great and good in this world. To let him know that there is more to Masonry than paying his dues and carrying a membership card How many times Brothers must we see this happen before we act on it? Can the future of our

Bro. Jeffs Comedy Corner

great Fraternity last if we continue this way? I dont think it can. Our Grand Masters motto this year is Together We Can Accomplish Anything and he is absolutely right! Because divided we will surely fall apart and be destroyed. Come back to Lodge Brothers, learn again what Masonry can make you feel good about, in yourselves and your lives. Be a Mason everyday and show your friends, neighbors and strangers alike what we have going for us. Show them what it means to be a Mason. May the Great Architect look down on you all and keep you well and safe from harm.
