Introduccin a cuenca mayor del ro Coello, se encuentra situada en la zona centro del departamento del Tolima y en la vertiente oriental de la cordillera Central. Esta zona abarca un rea de 189,931ha y una longitud de 111.6km, desde la parte ms alta a 3600m hasta la desembocadura en el ro Magdalena a 256m (Cortolima 2002). El rea de estudio tiene diversas zonas de vida de acuerdo con la clasificacin de Holdridge, segn Pomar y Vargas (1985) las cuatro zonas de vida son Bosque Seco Tropical, Bosque Hmedo Premontano, Bosque Hmedo Montano Bajo y Pramo Subalpino. Dicha cuenca se encuentra fuertemente influenciada por actividades antrpicas como la agricultura y la ganadera. Los municipios de El Espinal, Coello, Ibagu, Rovira, San Luis y Cajamarca tienen grandes extensiones de zonas cultivadas (e. g. arroz, sorgo, algodn, maz, caf, hortalizas y frutales), pastos para ganadera y zonas urbanas, los cuales se encuentran aledaos a los bosques tanto secundarios como bosques naturales y vegetacin de pramo de la cuenca. Hasta el momento slo se dispone de listados de especies de aves de las cuencas del ro Toche entre 1900 y 3500m de elevacin (Lpez-Lans et al. 2001), de los ros Combeima, Toche y Tochechito, en la zona de amortiguacin del Parque Nacional Natural Los Nevados, entre 1800 y 3500m (Cortolima 1996), y de la cuenca alta del ro Anaime, a 3600m (Rodrguez 2003). Quedan vacos de informacin en las cuencas de los ros Bermelln y Cocora y por debajo de

1200m hasta la desembocadura del Coello en el ro Magdalena. Estas ltimas localidades corresponden a la zona de vida Bosque Seco Tropical. Dicha zona de vida es de gran importancia por la presencia de una avifauna particular y por la gran amenaza de este tipo de ecosistema en Colombia y en Sur Amrica, en general. Con el fin de obtener un listado ms completo de las aves de esta regin se hicieron observaciones visuales y capturas con redes de niebla, segn el procedimiento sugerido por Ralph et al. (1996), en 13 zonas de la cuenca del ro Coello, entre 433 y 3600m de elevacin, en los municipios de Coello, Ibagu, Rovira y Cajamarca. Se efectuaron cuatro jornadas de campo entre marzo y noviembre de 2003 (con una duracin de 1 da por zona) y se revisaron los trabajos antes mencionados para completar los listados de aves de la cuenca. La secuencia taxonmica de las familias sigue a Hilty & Brown (1986); algunas especies registradas por Lpez-Lans et al. (2001), aparecieron con la nomenclatura de la lista de American Ornithologist Union (AOU 1998). Las 389 especies registradas, incluyen 7 especies endmicas y 5 de ellas bajo algn grado de peligro de extincin registradas por Losada et al. (2005) (Tabla 1). Dentro de la cuenca mayor se encuentra un rea de Inters para la Conservacin de las Aves (AICA) en la cuenca del ro Combeima entre 1400 y 2800m, adems de la propuesta por LpezLans et al. (2001) en la cuenca del ro Toche. Igualmente, se hace necesario llenar vacos de informacin con nuevos estudios en las cuencas de los ros Cocora y Bermelln, y por debajo de los 1200m de altura de la cuenca misma.

Introduction he Coello River Watershed is located in the center of the Tolima Department on the east slope of the Central Mountain Range (Colombia). It has an area of 189.931 hectares and is 1116 kilometers long with an altitude range of 256m to 3600m (Cortolima 2002). This area includes several of Holdridges life zones, such as dry tropical forest, low premontane wet forest, high premontane wet forest, and pramo vegetation (Pomar & Vargas 1985). The watershed area spreads through the municipalities of El Espinal, Coello, Ibague, Rovira, San Luis and Cajamarca, which have been influenced by human activities, such as agriculture and cattle farming, and have large rice, sorghum, corn, coffee, fruit and vegetable plantations, as well as pasture land and urban areas. So far, lists of bird species have been drawn up for only very few watershed areas, such as the Toche River from altitudes of 1900m up to 3500m (Lpez-Lans et al. 2001), the Combeima, Toche and Tochecito Rivers in the buffer zone around The Natural National Park Los Nevados between 1800m and 2800m of altitude (Cortolima 1996), and the upper Anaime River at 3600m (Rodrguez 2003). There is very little information about the Bermelln and Cocora Rivers Watersheds, as well as the areas below 1200m down to where the Coello River flows into the Mag-

dalena River. These localities are of great importance as they are dry tropical forests, a type of ecosystem in danger of extinction in Colombia and in South America, with a very particular avifauna. This study was carried out using mist nets for capturing birds and making visual observations, according to Ralph et al. (1996), in 13 zones of the Coello River Watershed from 433m to 3600m above sea level, in the municipalities of Coello, Ibagu, Rovira and Cajamarca. The areas were visited four times between March and November 2003 (one day per zone) and checklists from Cortolima (1996), Lpez-Lans et al. (2001) and Rodrguez (2003) were reviewed in order to draw up the list of bird species inhabiting the watershed area. The taxonomic sequence for families follows Hilty & Brown (1986), and some species registered by Lpez-Lans et al. (2001) appear among the nomenclature used in the American Ornithologist Union (AOU 1998). Of the 389 species identified in this study, seven species are endemic and five species are endangered, as reported by Losada-Prado et al. (2005) (Table 1). The Coello River Watershed houses two Bird Conservation Areas of Importance (BCAI). One is along the Cobeima River between 1400 and 2800m of altitude, and the other is a proposal by Lpez-Lans et al. (2001) for the Toche River watershed. It is also very important to carry out studies along the Cocora and Bermelln Rivers, and below 1200m inside of the Coello River Watershed.
