Author

Joy Burkey

Dave has been writing stories since college. It started out with extra long term papers (the first 3 stories in the book) and then branched out from there. Dave is now working on several other novel length stories, which are at various stages of being completed. Hopefully he will be able to publish them as well. In addition to writing, he has a Graphic Design business, and is a Journeyman Electrician looking for a career in Renewable Energy. Joy is a mom. She wrote her stories for fun for our children to read. She never intended them to be published, but Dave talked her into it. Dave and Joy have four beautiful daughters and live in Seattle. Dave has been writing poems and songs since he was in 4th grade. He grew up in Southern California. He wrote the most in high school and college. His inspiration at that time was of course GIRLS!! He served a mission for his church where he started writing religious songs and poems. Joy grew up in Washington State and started writing in 5th grade. Her inspiration for most of her poems are her four beautiful daughters. Dave and Joy also write short stories. They will be publishing a book of stories in the future.

    Intro

These are some short stories Joy and I wrote. Three of mine started out as College Term papers and grew from there. Anne’s Quest started as an assignment from a writers group in Missouri. The others were just ideas for stories I had.

Joy wrote some stories that she thought the kids might enjoy. As none of them are long enough in themselves to be published as a separate book, I thought it would be good to compile them in to one book. Any or all of these stories, at a later date, may be expanded into a full novel, if we ever get the gumption to do so. I have other stories in the works, but don’t know if they will ever get finished or published. But for now we hope you enjoy these.

Many thanks goes to those who helped us with these stories. First of all to God, for giving us life, an imagination and the ability to write. Secondly I would like to thank college my teachers who gave me the term papers that sparked my imagination to start writing. Third to Matt Banfield and his countless hours of going over our stories and helping edit them. And finally to all our other friends and relatives who helped us with information we needed to write parts of these stories accurately.

    Time Traveler

Written in 1994 as a term paper for college history class. This assignment was if something in history changed, how would the world be different. So I chose when Hero developed the steam engine in ancient Greece, and decided to go from there.

A time traveler goes back in time to change history, to save his world. This is mostly about the history of his people and why he came to the decision he made. Hope you enjoy.

    Chapter 1

The year 1993, a flowering planet with Russia no longer a world power, Clinton in office, and the United States’ economy failing. If it wasn’t for me, history as you know it would have never happened. I am Burkey, a time traveler and a warrior, the last of the race known as the humans. I was sent back through time to pinpoint the start of the destruction of my home world, the planet Earth. It wasn’t a world as you know it, but a world completely destroyed by man, because he let the greed and pride of his heart control him.

I traced the pinpoint of the destruction of my people back to ancient Greece. A man named Hero successfully developed a steam engine in 200 B.C. That may not seem a big deal to you, but think of how the world would be like 2000 years into the future. Instead of the industrial revolution starting in the 1800s, think of it starting in the year 200 B.C.

At the time the steam engine was developed, there was mixed feelings about developing it. Some said the slave system they had was sufficient for the work they needed done. That’s how I was able to change the course of history. I convinced the Greeks that there was no need for a contraption of that sort; then I went and found where it was, then I destroyed it, and destroyed all the plans for it. If the inventor at that time had known what would have happened to his race, he would have never invented it, but still it wasn’t his fault.

Now I will tell you my history, and why it was so crucial to stop this from happening. I write and leave you this record so you may not do the same thing to the planet as we did.

As I said, around the year 200 B.C. a Greek inventor by the name of Hero developed this steam engine. At first he didn’t really know what to do with it, but soon Hero and his fellow workers developed and improved it to do many tasks. He developed it to be used in commercial ways, now they could make goods faster than the other nations around them. They started developing their military, providing these steam type carriers for their armies, and for their navies, always though keeping their advances in secret.

They were able to learn earlier the use of iron and steel, and refine other forms of metals making them stronger than they had been before. They developed metal warships very similar to the early ones you know of. With the steam engine and the metal, they could make self propelled four wheeled chariots, and put better armor on their men.

With the steam engine now in the military, the Athenians easily conquered the Spartans and forced them to join into an empire, unifying all of Greece with one government. Over time they improved and invented better devices, and better weapons. They also learned from the Chinese how to use gun powder.

A man named Lucus developed an engine, much the same as a diesel engine, that could run off of the oil they used in their lamps, therefore, it was inexpensive to run. Finally he developed a simple proto type of a car, much like the model A that Ford built. All were enthused with this idea, now they were able to go places much faster than they were before. They developed all of this for their military, unknown to the other empires around them. The other kingdoms had an idea that something was going on but they weren’t quite sure what it was or the uses for it, and they started getting nervous.

Persia declared war on Greece, not knowing the power of their army and navy. The Greeks could out run the other ships, and could easily ram into and destroy the simpler wooden ships, knowing that metal was a lot stronger than wood. With the engine propelling them, the Greeks were able to use most of their men in other places, on the land. Also with the use of gun powder they learned the skill of firing artillery on the enemy, mostly, like today, of blowing holes in the other ships.

After many short battles the Greeks conquered all the known civilization around the Mediterranean, and the Near East. They set up the capital for the empire in Athens. At first since the Greek city-states weren’t unified they had trouble with the organization and the governing of this vast empire but they soon learned how to unite themselves and rule effectively.

For 140 years, after the government was running fairly smoothly, they had peace and the technology flourished. They, for the most part, stayed politically out of the civilizations that were already well developed like Egypt, Rome, China, and Israel. However they did learn from them customs, and ways of life. From the Romans they learned effective ways of democratic government, which with their military enabled them to stay in power for as long as they did. The Greeks were sympathetic to the other nations and for the most part left them to themselves, much like the Roman Empire in your history. No one had any complaints, for the first time there was total peace.

Shortly after the formation of the Empire, the Greeks sought out new lands, colonized what we know to be the North and South America, but to them it was New Greece, and Charmaine. They colonized West-berg (Australia), parts of Africa, and Asia. They shared ideas and traded with the east, China, Japan, and from Africa. In all their territories Greece built up the military.

West-berg was colonized mostly by independent businessmen and college aged young adults. A large portion of these colonists followed after Aristotle and looked to the sky. They were fascinated by the sun, moon, and stars and wondered what was out there, thus the science of astronomy was created. Astronomers of West-berg took the place of Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, and Sir Isaac Newton of your history.

The land north eastward was conquered and colonized easily because the inhabitants at the time were barbaric and unorganized, and was what we know today to be Europe. Except for what we know as Italy, these were lands of more colonies from Greece. It was named Genna after a lady doctor in Greece who was respected by all for her medical knowledge plus her ability to lead people. She was the ruler of the first settled territory shortly after the formation of the Greek Mediterranean Empire. Swiftly the land of Genna became populated for the great farm land and the abundant forests for timber. Also most of the metal that was used by Greece was mined there. It flourished into a strong country with a fierce military of its own.

Near the end of the 200 years, New Greece for years was trying to separate themselves from their home land in the Mediterranean, which started fierce wars between the two. Finally, after much fighting and bloodshed on both sides they won their freedom, as did Charmaine which became different countries. Although now New Greece and Charmaine were separated from the Empire, these new countries were still friendly to their Mother Country. In 100 B.C. Greece gave Genna its independence and it was known as a separate country from then on. They continued to advance in medicine.

By 5 B.C. the technology was much like yours is today. They had electricity, they developed very advanced cars, computers, even microwaves; life was as it is to you now. High rise buildings filled the horizon in the larger cities, in the Greek settled countries they were made after the fashion of the old style Greek buildings, like the ones you might have seen in Washington DC. Planes flew people around the world, new weapons for the militaries were developed, even to nuclear war heads.

China and Japan were the technology leaders, much as they are now, but still they stayed politically away from the rest of the world, and that was the start of the problem. They were advancing far faster than the rest of the world in the electronic, and weapon field, but in the Orient, by this time, they had passed the nuclear age and were working with magnetic and ionic fields. But just as Greece kept the steam engines to themselves, the Orient kept their advances to themselves. However they did pass on technology, after they had passed it themselves. Greece had turned herself into a powerful empire sweeping over much of the earth. Just as English is the main language for your world, Greek and forms of Greek were the main languages of theirs.

You may have wondered, if you are religious, about the prophet and Son of God known as Jesus Christ. As you can tell I have been expressing time as B.C. He, at the believed to be the appointed time, did come in the year 0, or there about, only under different circumstances. He was still born under humble circumstances, and was believed to be a Prophet of what was and still is the Israelite nation. Life with them was much the same as it is in your history, except for the advancements of man, but still Israel was about thirty years behind the rest of the world. We believe that the religious aspect of life happened the same. Christ traveled and taught, but he did not have his own television show. He was a humble man and died a terrible death, Crucifixion, still believed to be the most horrible and degrading way a man could die. The Greeks designed it that way. As he taught he converted many tens of thousands, believers after his death were also known as Christians. They went all over the world to teach this new doctrine and had relatively good success. Even though most of the world worshipped the many Greek gods, some were comforted that there was one supreme God controlling everything instead of many lesser gods controlling some things. However, most of the world continued to worship their demigods. But shortly after most of the followers of Christ were persecuted and put to death by the politicians, and other religious sects. They all were executed except for a few thousand, from all around the world, who fled to the deserts and mountains of New Greece. Slowly they multiplied, and after a few decades about 50 A.D. went out just as Christ did to tell the world of its foretold destruction. Now I wish more people had listened to them, for they were right, and you will find out why.

    Chapter II

Up to the year 700 there was relative peace and advancements in all fields. Genna took medicine to new heights. They developed the most advanced techniques to heal, and re-vitalize the body. They developed ways to make us live longer, run faster, jump higher, people lived for 200 years instead of 80, and during most of their lives they felt as if they were a young adult.

In West-berg they made advances in space exploration. They built powerful telescopes to scan the heavens, and found other galaxies and proved many years before that the Earth is not the center of the universe. They made ships for space flight and trained astronauts to go there. They sent men to the moon, put satellites in space and took pictures of other planets, and all the things that what you know of as NASA is doing now. In Africa things were a little slower than the rest of the world, and no special advances were made. In New Greece after the wars were ended, they were able to advance in the fields of science. In Charmaine they used the science from New Greece and applied it to farming, finding new and better ways to produce food. They studied the role of diet and health, and developed more nutritious foods, with less fat and more vitamins.

Finally in the year 700 A.D. the Orient, China and Japan and a few other countries, united and declared war on the rest of the world. They felt they were the most advanced in the entire world and also the most powerful, and wanted to take it over. They used a new weapon no one had seen before, an ionic ray, beamed from a satellite that would instantly melt anything it hit. They attacked the major cities of the world Athens, Sprat, the city of Genna, Rome, and all the other capitals. Nuclear warheads flew destroying Tokyo and Hong Kong, to destroy the control centers of those satellites. After a long war the Orient was caught by surprise when Genna and New Greece banded together to develop a certain gas chemical, that when it got into their blood stream and into their cells, it re-arranged the DNA structures and their bodies just shut down.

At the end of this eight year war the whole world was devastated, the land was rearranged, the air was ionized, the ozone layer was non-existent, and everything was filled with radiation. The nuclear bombs that were dropped had such an impact on the Earth that they created great earthquakes. These earthquakes opened up fissures in the earth causing the magma from inside to come gushing out causing volcanoes to erupt and creating new ones. Whole cities were buried in the earth, or flooded out by giant tidal waves. Most of the major cities and towns were completely annihilated. Millions of people had died instantly, others died while fighting, and still others suffered, slowly suffocating from all of the smoke, dust, radiation and other things in the air. For many months they could not see the sun, and the moon and stars were impossible to see. The temperature dropped suddenly from the lack of light, freezing everything. From the impact of all this destruction, the tilt of the earth shifted slightly. There was nearly no vegetation, and what was left was so radioactive it would soon die, but for some reason the giant red woods on the western coast of New Greece survived.

What had they done to their world?

There was only a small group of 10,000 people relatively unaffected by this war, for they were hidden in the mountains, and had built shelters and had prepared themselves for just such an emergency. They were the followers of Christ, who from all nations, had fled into the mountains and deserts during the persecutions. There, their scientists and medical technicians were advanced enough to build special astronaut type suits to keep them alive. In these suits they could go out into the world and breathe the oxygen this suit provided. It worked much like photosynthesis works in plants.

In the year 750 they spread out over New Greece. They found there were still many cities and towns relatively unaffected by the war, and everything was still intact, the radiation, smoke, and cold had killed most of these inhabitants. Surprisingly some survived, in their own self made shelters, and lived on what they could afterwards. Their biochemists started renewing the air supply. They cultivated strong oxygen giving bacteria that could live in the harsh environments. When the air was less radiated they planted fields, orchards, and plants all over. Now this wasn’t enough, they spread over the whole world to re-plant and revitalize this planet so it could be inhabitable again. Their scientists and leaders of technology after some years had developed a shield around the earth to act as a type of ozone layer, since the natural one had been destroyed. Luckily during those few years most of the ionization and radiation had diffused into outer space, leaving room for the purer air. Slowly they spread out and populated the whole earth again, re-building cities, planting crops, raising animals, and all other things of normal life. Most people went back to the countries they or their ancestors were from, keeping the names of the original countries, but renaming smaller less significant ones. They reestablished governments and set up societies, all within the statutes of the Kingdom of God.

In the year 823 A.D., the air was pure enough that they didn’t have to wear the suits anymore. Earlier they mostly migrated to the places on the continents of low radiation level, so they could live a while without the suits, but now they were totally free of them and could live anywhere. But they did store them in case they needed them for a future time.

Up to around the year 1,000 A.D. they built up societies much up to the way it was before the war, and in some places they had advanced even further. They learned to effectively use the sun, water, and wind for their primary energy sources so they had no need for fossil fuels. They developed cars and vehicles that ran on magnetization, so there was no need for gasoline. They built their buildings of composite metals, and highly resistant plastics, usually stronger than steel, so they had no need for wood, therefore they left the trees alone, except for the yearly Christmas tree, and for occasional fire wood. They learned the art of insect farming, using other insects or small animals as pesticides instead of hazardous chemicals. Thus the fruits and vegetables were better for them.

The only thing that they did not revert back to was the worship of the many gods of the Greeks. Yes, a lot of them were theoretically Greek, but they stayed faithful to their one God and his son Jesus Christ. He had told them to prepare for what had happened and thus spared their lives. Their God had for told this destruction of the world because the inhabitants there of were not following Him, but this people did, so they were spared. Greeks did away with the religious aspects of that culture, and the others did away with religion of the theirs, but they kept the other customs and traditions of their people. They were all one society under one God and one religion. His laws were their laws, the gospel of Jesus Christ the center of their lives. They considered this Gods kingdom and He was the divine ruler.

All the countries as before had their specialization’s, but this time nothing was held back, all things discovered were shared openly. They formed a world committee for trade and commerce. There was continual peace for many hundreds of years, everyone worked together to help build up. During this time, just as you are now, they were once again traveling in space, sending out satellites, probes, cameras, to see what was beyond what they could see with the telescope. West-berg was the leader in space technology as it was before the war, using the ideas and advancements in technology from the Orient.

In the year 1200 A.D., they formed their first colony on the moon. They did it much the same way they re-vitalized the earth. They wore the same type of suits they developed after the war to use until they could build a livable habitation, but these were specially made for space. They used the sun for energy, and put plants inside the buildings for oxygen. The fuel they use for the rockets and spaceships was made from grain, corn, wheat, rice, and others, fermented till it had a very high alcoholic level, then compressed until it was pure. It burnt clean, and the cost was much less than the ones they used before the war out of fossil fuels, because they had a non-ending supply. But if someone tried to drink it they would die within a matter of minutes.

After turning the moon into an inhabitable place, they ventured on and went to Mars, Jupiter, and the other planets. They treated each one differently, and used methods of vitalization specifically for that planet or moon. They didn’t colonize Venus or Mercury for they were to close to the sun, but they did explore them for elements they could use and other life forms. They didn’t change the structure or lack of atmosphere of the moon, for it controlled the tides and gravitational pull of the Earth. They still didn’t quite understand how, but they didn’t do anything that would disrupt the balance.

They reached Mars in 1310, the great red wonder and neighbor to Mother Earth. For many years the people of the earth have wondered what was on this planet, green aliens, or anything? Many times they sent probes to take pictures of the planet, but they were inconclusive, the only way to find out was to go down to the surface and find out themselves. So they did. When they got there they found nothing, red sand, and a lot of rocks, not one sign of life was to be found, as was the case with many planets and moons. They then saw a mystic glow to the north, so they boarded the ship and started moving north. Still nothing, but as they got closer to the pole, the windows on the outside started to get fogged. They discovered that a massive ice pack was concentrated to the north and to the south. The magnetic pull of the two hemispheres had pulled all of the water to either end, where it had frozen. They then found a cavern where the water assumedly came from, and as they went further and further into the cavern, they could hear the rushing waters, their instruments told them that there was breathable oxygen. As they went further, they started to see plants growing, the temperature warming, and a light shining. Finally they reached a gigantic cavern, although it wasn’t a cavern, but a huge hollow space under the surface of the planet. There, there were plants, streams, grass, and lakes. The light was from holes going down from the surface.

When in the year 1403 they built a ship big enough and with enough power to travel the extremely long distance, they found that Jupiter was not an inhabitable planet at all. The cloud cover contained many toxic chemicals. The surface was arid, rocky, and the wind blew up to 200 miles per hour and the temperature was much too cold. However the explorers did discover something of great value on the planet, giant diamonds, gold, silver, and other precious gems and metals. The pressure was so great on the planet that it alone formed these great jewels. Although there are many riches on the planet, it is impossible to obtain them, many have tried, and many have died doing so. Although Jupiter itself was not inhabitable, the many moons around it were so those were colonized.

A few years later they reached Saturn. They found that underneath all that gas and clouds that we can see, there was a thriving planet with lush vegetation, great forests, and oceans of turquoise blue. The climate was just as the tropical regions on earth. There was all manner of animals roaming around some you could never dream of, but no real intelligent life was to be found. The sky was a light purple, and a strange brilliantly colored crystal was all over. You would wonder how so far away from the sun there could be a world like this. They found that the gas clouds that surround the planet act as a insulator for the planet. It traps in just enough heat to keep the climate perfectly in the 80s, and all the rest is diffused out. The cloud layer is high enough that it doesn’t affect the surface on the planet, but lets the sunlight through at just the right concentration. The astronauts who first landed on Saturn like to call it paradise for that’s what it truly was, a paradise. Also of its ten moons five were transformable to livable habitats.

At the same time they were exploring Uranus, the greenish-blue planet. They found out why it was blue, it was all ocean, but it was a type of liquid nitrogen and methane, so they were not inhabitable, but they could use the nitrogen and methane for gas and fuel for their ships. It was the same case for Neptune, but its methane and other gaseous atmosphere would not allow anything through it without disintegrating it. However, of the five moons, of Uranus three were transformable to livable habitats and one of the two around Neptune could be used. The others were used for salvageable elements. Pluto was too cold, and had no atmosphere. At the time that was as far as they wanted to go. However some explorers from West-berg went past Pluto, and they were never heard of again. Whether or not they found new life, new worlds and other places to live we do not know.

    Chapter III

Back on earth in 1536 all the governments had joined together in a peace treaty, although there was nothing really to disrupt the peace. The leader of the unified nations at this time was a man by the name of Craig Berntson. He was a tall gentle man with a flaring smile that sometimes made him look sadistic, but he was a great politician. He did what no other man could do, that was, unify the world under a common peace.

By the year 1550 they made many more advances in technology, science, medicine, etc. The orient had developed a system of transport much like the ones you see in the movies of Star Trek, a matter transmitter. They also developed food replicators, and various devices for the mind. They were able to learn more things at a faster rate and recall 99% of what the learned. They learned to control many of the body parts that are automatic, such as heart rate, respiration, temperature, etc.

By 1570 the peace was diminishing. Many small countries of Africa, Asia, and elsewhere didn’t like the unified government and tried to separate themselves from it. The people of the new generations were getting restless and wanted some excitement. The religion of their parents and grandparents meant nothing to them. There started to be small bands of young men, usually in their 20s-30s who went around and harassed people, like the gangs of the 1920’s in your history. They burnt crops, destroyed buildings, looted, had their way with women, stole, cheated, killed, etc. This grew from city to city, and country to country, and then they were in all the countries. The churches’ prophets warned them that if they continued in the way they were going, in time, they would desire themselves just as the world had before, but this time it would be complete.

The gangsters had men secretly infiltrating the governments placing there own leaders in office. Some of these gangs became stronger than the armies, making and selling high powered weapons. They had gambling rings, provided drugs for whoever could afford them, slowly they took over whole towns and cities, and some of the smaller countries.

In 1562 they banded together and threw Berntson out of the government and exiled him to a small island in the pacific. Year after year more and more people stopped following Christ and joined their secret societies; year after year the general population became more and more corrupt. By the year 1600 most of the world’s population had no morals, they did what they wanted, and they did it when and where they wanted. Remember this was a society formed from the followers of Christ whose religion was the center of their lives, and now they were totally disregarding the laws of God that at one time they held so dear. Many had no love and were so far into the things of these secret societies that they had no conscience. By 1605 the peace was totally disrupted. Many went back to worshipping the many gods of the ancient Greeks, because it was more a tradition than religion.

In New Greece, there was a man of peace by the name of Burkey, who is also one of my ancestors, whose last name I have. He rallied and fought against these gangs and tried to instill values once again into the people. He had much success, teaching the original gospel that the first followers of Christ believed in, was able to change many lives and bring peace to many souls. He invented many things to try to make life better for the people, but his greatest achievement was in music, through which he brought some peace back to the world.

In 1613 he founded a city for those who wanted to get away from all the corruption of the world. This was a city of peace, and it contained most modern technology some of which Burkey himself invented. It needed no streets for the matter transporters took the people where they wanted to go. It was next to the mountains, ocean, and a great river, so there was a lot to do and places to go. Above the city was a bubble, or a protective shield. Within this shield they were able to control the climate, they were able to eliminate wastes from the factories, not that they had much, but the air was pure. Chemists were able to make rain, snow, and wind, or just keep it a nice 80 degrees in side. In the middle of the city was Burkey center, which contained the main offices of Burkey Enterprises, and three sports arenas, where the main attraction was wrestling and football. For travelers, the city had a large golden structure in the shape of a pyramid, known as the Pyramid Hotel.

The peaceful music that Burkey and others made was played all over the city, in the radio stations, and even on the sidewalks and in the parks, for there were many of them, especially park central which surrounded Burkey Center.

The people who lived in the city had to live by a moral code. All had to respect themselves and those of the opposite sex. All in the city had to live by the laws and commandments of the Church of Jesus Christ, which was the name of the original church that Christ established when he was here, whether they formally belonged to it or not. Every one had to work, there was no welfare system for there were no poor, everyone had what they needed, everyone was created equally. There was no sexism, no racism, no crime, no jails or prisons. If anyone broke the law, there were two punishments. One, they were banned from the city never being able to return again. The second, they were to correct the wrong they had done, and were on a probation period for one year. During this time they had no privileges as a citizen. Most chose the second punishment for they didn’t want to leave the city.

In 1620 Berntson and his faithful followers, after much warring with these new factions, was restored as the leaders of nations, thanks to the help of Burkey and the Gospel he shared with others. Relative peace was re-established, but still the morals of the people were still not that good. People still did what they wanted, teen age pregnancies, abortions, gang war fare, and that type of thing. Some countries were worse than others. In the Orient, the number of children born to teens increased, while in Genna, it stayed relatively low, due to the medical background. But basic life was like it is now, depending on where you live. Some like East L.A., some like the peaceful countryside.

People moved to the new colonies that were being established on the planets of the solar system; usually the young, enthusiastic, lovers of new exciting things and to start a new life. Also there was work on these new colonies in all fields, and things were being invented a lot more to live there. It stayed this way till relatively the early 1800s. New inventions, colonizing, better ways in science, medicine, and in psychology, and technology came at amazing speeds.

The colonists, who left from Genna to the colonies, developed a new revolution for medicine, synthetic blood. With this blood the person could not get sick, and they could live for 500 years, but the installation was very hazardous. It was only used for those rare occasions when someone got a disease from the new planet, and there was no cure as of yet; after all blood was life. For those who by accident had lost an arm or leg, or even had brain damage, they advanced in Cybernetics. They could reattach the severed appendage, but with cybernetics they could transform it to something better, stronger, without pain.

In the year 1855 is when the trouble started, a great war broke out between the different countries for the control of the planets, and colonies, and those on the planets too started fighting for control of themselves. The two main forces I will just call for understanding, the Red Army and the White Army. This war lasted for 150 years and destroyed life as I knew it.

    Chapter IV

I was born on Christmas day in 1970 in Burkey city, although most of the world was corrupt, we still celebrated it. At the time there were pioneers sent out from our city to colonize a newly converted moon off of Neptune. I, along with a great scientist and friend Ken Rex, whose parents were into the dinosaurs, grew up during the wars. We learned how to fight if the need came. Shortly after my family and I made the great journey to the colonized moon with the others to get away from the wars. I advanced in technology, Ken advanced in science. We also had a friend Genna, named after the first queen of her country, who like her ancestors specialized in medicine.

In 1980 the wars were fierce, but luckily I was born in Burkey City, which was neutral, but soon after the fighting went there. We tried to stop it but it was no use, the Red Army was too strong for our peaceful city. When the number of guards were low and by the cover of night, my family, Genna’s, and most of the others were able to escape. We fled to the colonizing moon that others from the city had gone to. This moon was on the other side of the solar system orbited around the planet Neptune. Many millions of people had been needlessly slaughtered, and we just wanted to live peacefully.

The war as you know started on earth and slowly moved outward. By the time I got to the colony near Neptune, the earth’s moon had been the site of a terrible battle, Mars was now asteroids floating in space, and there was fighting on Saturn, and then shortly after came close to here. Because of the carelessness of the warring peoples, the devastation on the moon shifted it slightly and caused great tidal waves, floods, and other disasters like happened in the Great War earlier.

We on the moon Cinco, which was the fifth moon in the line of moons and named after the first colonizer Stephen Cincotta, knew that the war would soon come there so we had to prepare. Also there was a great military commander on our world named Gabriel who came from Israel, and to me he will always be an angel. Another great friend and fighter, my buddy Bri, who was from West-berg helped get this moon ready for habitation. These two, Ken, and Genna are really the ones responsible for me getting back in time to change our fate. You can see that we had members from each of the major countries, we were set on keeping the peace, and keeping out of the war, but we didn’t succeed.

We used our resources and converted our starships into warships. We also converted those astro-suits, as we called them, into armor and changed the molecular structure so they could reflect the beams of the weapons used by the enemy. Gabriel and Bri gathered the armies, and trained them to fight; we all didn’t want to but, it was necessary for our survival. Genna had the medical facilities ready for everyone who needed treatment. She herself has revived me on a few occasions during the fighting.

Ken, with his knowledge of physics, developed a suit for time travel, it looks much like the ones you have seen in the movie Star Wars. For that has been my life WAR. This suit, powered by photosynthesis, and magnetic fields, enables me to go where and when I want. It has the same design as the ones used to convert these planets and moons into livable atmospheres. To my arm is built the travel controls. Since everything is built into the suit, I need no other devices. To explain how this suit works would take too much time. In fact no one in my time was even sure it would work. The only way we would find out is when I pushed that button to go back into time.

It is only by pure chance that the Earth hadn’t been destroyed yet. For that’s where the headquarters for both sides were, the White Army in Greece, and the Red Army in Egypt. They couldn’t effectively destroy the other without destroying themselves, so they fought on the other planets. And now it was almost here.

Another cause of this war besides greed was racism. Ever since Berntson was put back into office, the Greeks hated the Egyptians, Africa hated New Greece and West-berg, and everyone was against the Orient for starting the first war. The Orient, Asia, Africa including Egypt were on one side while Greece, New Greece, Charmaine, and West-berg were on the other.

In 1990 the war of the planets, so it was called, for that’s what they were fighting over, came close to Neptune. Luckily we were ready for them. By then, much of the Red Armies troops were depleted, and most of their weapons have been destroyed. They, we felt, actually were fleeing to our section of space, but we knew they would attack us. They hid out on a moon near ours called Kel. All we could do is wait. The White Army wasn’t far behind.

Finally in 1998 they got enough reinforcements that they could plan an attack on us. In 1999 they attacked, and it was a sore battle. Many on both sides had perished, but since we had prepared these suits, our fatality rate was far less than theirs. They called for more troops, but we surrounded their moon and knocked out all transmissions to and from their army, so they had to fend for themselves. Meanwhile fierce fighting had broken out all over the solar system and the two sides nearly destroyed each other. This last remnant of the Red Army, and we on this moon, were the last that were alive. They attacked us one more time in 2005 after they had recovered from the last battle, the same happened, they lost many. Many of us were severely injured but thanks to Genna we all survived.

They came back a few times and battled with us, but then for a few years we didn’t see them again. We rejoiced, we thought we had won the war, but we weren’t quite sure. Then in 2013, they came back. During this time they had been developing a new weapon that would effectively get through our armored suits. For a year we fought, each winning and losing battles. This time many thousands of ours were lost. Genna tried as hard as she could to keep up and try to heal us but she got swamped.

The fifth month in 2014, the great and final battle had commenced. The enemy had taken over many strong holds, destroyed Genna’s medical development, and held many prisoners. With the medical facility gone Genna traded her tools of healing for tools of destruction, a suit and TR155 laser rifle. We in turn had killed many thousands of them, and most of their weapons, and immobilized their spacecraft. there was no escape for either of us. This time it was a fight to the death.

Gabriel and his troops were in the southern hemisphere, and I with him. Bri and Genna were in the north. With this new weapon the enemy was slaughtering us all. We fought with all our might, and the numbers on both sides were down into the hundreds. The reason we didn’t run is because we knew that they would track us and destroy us, we felt we had a better chance to fight, besides it was to our advantage, we knew the landscape and flora cover much better than the enemy did so we could make surprise attacks on them and escape with out being found.

Each day we fought and each day the numbers grew smaller and smaller. Bri’s army to the north was almost completely destroyed, and ours were nearly destroyed, but also were the enemies. Both sides on the fourth day were fewer than 100. The leader of the Red Army sent General Gabriel a letter saying: Esteemed General Gabriel, we know that our armies are nearly depleted, and we wish you the fortune of having your lives be saved, if you will lay down your weapons of war and surrender to us, and let us be your leaders you will be spared, and if you will not on the day after tomorrow, you will be utterly destroyed.

Gabriel sent a letter back saying Leader of the Red Army, we shall not lay down our weapons of war, for that action will be against all that we stand for. We shall fight you for our posterity, our religion, and our freedom. For my ancestors fought in ancient days and even shall I now fight for what we believe in, and on the day after the morrow, not a man among you shall be standing alive.

I was the one chosen to wear and use the suit for time and space travel, and since it had not really been tested yet, only I would know if I was going to succeed, but we all would know if I had failed. By now our Scouts had returned with the information that the Earth had nearly been destroyed, as it had been in the previous world war. There was no life to be found on it, for now it could not sustain life, there was no choice but to fight.

Everyone on our side gathered into one place. For a day we rested and prepared ourselves, that this would be the last battle of the human race and life as we know it. In a matter of hours all of us, if I did not succeed would meet our maker. But there was still a chance that we could win this last battle. For if we do, our army still has women alive, so we could, if we had to, multiply and continue the human race. But if not I had to push this button and go into the unknown. We only had time for one last prayer.

The morning came and with the amount of troops both sides had, we could only fight for a few hours. Gabe, Genna, and their troops took the highlands and snuck to the back of the Red Armies camp. I and my troops took the low lands and waited for them to come to us. As the Red Army came to attack us, we attacked them from the trees, and behind rocks. Gabe and Genna came up from the rear and surprised them. In the return fire half of our troops were killed. We retreated, they followed. As we ran, they fell into holes, and got caught in traps we had set the day before, but they were still able to finish off our troops.

Genna got hit just as she wiped out twenty of their men. As I leaned over to help her I got hit from behind. I drug her limp, bloody body into the protection of a near by rock, and as I knelt by her she grabbed my arm and whispered. In her dying voice she said Please, you have to make it back, so our people can have a second chance. I told her, for her I would succeed. Bri also made a suicide run through their forces and took out a large number of them, he never made it back.

It came down to the last four survivors, Gabriel, Cindy a woman on our side, and the leader from their side, and I, who was now hiding so I would be safe to go back in time if I needed to. I had been hit once and could not be hit again or the suit would not work, luckily the first time was only in the leg where no major components were. The leader from the Red Army found where I was hiding; Cindy was guarding me. He shot and Cindy returned fire, in the end he got her, and as he was about to shoot me Gabriel came out of hiding and took the hit, just as I pushed the button and the suit sent me back. I don’t know what happened after that, if Gabe killed the leader of the Red Army or if anyone survived. Whatever was the result it didn’t matter, all the women were dead so there was no way to replenish the population.

Now we know that the suit worked, but I am stuck, a lone man in time, never to go out of this suit, for if I do, I will die. My body is linked to this suit. I get the nourishment from the suit, I get air from the suit, I get strength from this suit. My body cannot function on its own anymore. The air you breathe is different than the air I breathe, so my respiratory system would not work, also the gravitational pull on the earth is different than when I lived there, so my weight would be much more than yours. The suit is designed to compensate for those differences.

The human race now has a second chance. Let this history be a warning to you. Don’t let things get out of hand. Don’t let the greed, and passions, and the pride of your heart cause you to do evil things. For it was the greed of a nation that destroyed the world and people I know. May you all look to build up each other, and not let the racism and hate in your hearts tear each other down or the history I know will be your future.

Part 2 of Time Traveler. Written in 1994 as a term paper for college history class second semester.

The US government is corrupt. It has been taken over by a secret group called the ACL. They have twisted the laws and workings of this once great nation to suit their own needs. The Freedom Fighters are trying to revert the Government back to its original constitutional government.

    Introduction

I am Burkey a time traveler. I saved this earth from destruction by changing the course of history so the human race might have a second chance. They destroyed their world because of greed and the racism in their hearts. In the last battle of this people, I was one of the last survivors, I do not know if I was the last. Just as our last man got hit I went back into time to see if I could change our history for a better future.

I traveled back to the time of the ancient Greeks. A man named Hero had built a prototype of the steam engine, that was the cause and start of the problem that ended up in the destruction of this world. That in it’s self was not the problem, but the advancement of technology from that device happened exceedingly fast and that caused the problems that resulted in the destruction of our race. I went back and destroyed the machine and the blueprints, and caused that no one wanted to use the steam engine, so he could not make another one. Since I did that, the whole history of this world changed to what you know it as now. I am trapped. A lone man in time, never able to go out of this suit. I am stuck in time, stuck between two realities, the reality of my time and this new one I have made. I cannot be seen nor heard, I can’t influence this people for the better or worse. I can however record the events of this new time and world, and hopefully they do not do the same thing that my people have done.

After I was finished in ancient Greece I pushed the button that would cause me to be invisible, by putting me in a different dimension where time stood still. I never went visible again, for I didn’t need to, I had everything that I needed here. The people of this time, as they would have in mine, would have thought I was some sort of alien. I guess in a way I was, and I didn’t want to risk what might happen to me. For many centuries I stayed invisible.

I cannot very well say my people, for all the people that were born in my history will also be born in this new one, the only difference is that they may not be born in the same place and they probably won’t do the same thing. I will even be born again. And that is who I am here to talk about… . ME

In the new world I was born in California on Christmas day 1970, ten years after I did in my time. I could not believe that I was there again. I was part of this new human being, and as he grew up it got stranger and stranger for me to watch this boy grow up. I thought what he thought, I saw what he saw, I felt what he felt, and I knew what he knew. He couldn’t know what I know for I do come from another place in time and another world, completely different, yet it was the same world, a world I didn’t know, a world I didn’t relate with. It was like going to a different planet, but it was the same planet, and there I was again, living breathing and doing what little boys do. Little did I know that I was also between dimensions, from a different time, and a parallel universe. But this time there was no war, there was no Burkey City, and the countries and continents were as you know them to be.

After a while I learned how to put myself in to him, into me. I could not do it with anyone else, but since this was my own being I found I could. Soon I could see through his eyes, hear through his ears, feel his pain and feel his joys as if it was me. It was me, but at the same time it wasn’t me.

How could this be? I myself was alive and yet there was another me. I was one soul, one entity, but there are two of me, not a clone, but the real genuine thing, it seemed impossible but yet it was true. I would think that if I was where I am from this other time and place that in this planet’s new time I wouldn’t exist for I existed in the last world and did not die. Then I think of the parallel. It was a parallel between the two times, a parallel between two universes. I was part of my time yet I was also part of this new time.

I heard somewhere, probably on Cinco from Dr. Rex that if you go back in time and stopped or changed it, that it would create a new universe, a universe parallel to the old one. Both universes would have the same time, but different things would go on since the change. So I wondered if I could be living in the other universe too doing the same things that I’ve done, and still be here and still this other me in this time too. That would be three of me, and then if we met it would destroy all that I know.

In the early years there wasn’t much to watch. He grew up like all boys do, playing, getting in trouble, and most of all wondering about these strange beings called girls. To him, they looked human, but they acted odd at times. He noticed that they were always changing their minds. Later in life he got close to them a few times then things went in a different direction. He was always a brilliant person, I know because he’s me, but this one didn’t use his intelligence to its potential till one day while he was in Washington DC on a business trip. This trip changed his life for ever, he got the opportunity to stay and go into the government so he did, to change it for the better. I will tell this to you as a observer even though as the events happened to him they also happened to me.

    Chapter I

The sun was shining through the green trees behind the massive domed structure. Down the gray granite steps ran Jon Stevens, out of the white columned building that was the Capital Building of The United States. Seconds behind Jon were the rest of the buildings workers running and screaming. As soon as they reached the bottom of the steps, a great orange ball of fire came rushing through the arched doorway. The force of the blast caused a great amount of concrete to be flown upon the receding crowd. Minutes later the sounds of sirens and the flashes of lights came blazing in. Jon looked with his ocean blue eyes as immediately firemen jumped out of the red trucks parked half hazardly along the street, grabbed hoses, and rushed into the burning building.

What the heck happened? thought Jon as he faced the reporters all around the crowd. How could this be? We have no enemies, no factions to over throw the government, why would this happen, and who would do a thing like this. Jon took off his gray blazer and put it on his right shoulder. In came a pouring of questions from the pushing reporters, camera flashes in his face caused him to blink often. I have no idea what caused the explosion or what might be going on, and no more questions. I’m sure there will be a press conference after we have discovered what happened here. The crowd of reporters hurriedly ran to talk to other witnesses.

Later that day it was reported to Jon what had caused this explosion. It was the old boiler in the basement. It just got too much pressure and blew up. explained Bob, a short, overweight, man about thirty. "We found no traces that someone made it explode, if someone did, he did it in such a way that there is no evidence, and also he made a clean get away. I’ll tell ya if I find out any
