Concept: Below are some of the most recent developments related to reproductive health in our society. Your job will be to provide an analysis of these developments. As we discussed in the beginning of the unit sex ed is a values driven topic. These issues are inherently controversial themselves because although there are facts that may help you understand them ultimately you see these facts through the prism of your own perception (values, morals, upbringing, etc.). The sources listed are just a starting point, remember that any information may be biased and it is your job as an educated consumer to carefully analyze information for validity, reliability, and bias. Goal: Provide an analysis of the recent developments in reproductive health demonstrating an understanding of content specific information necessary to understand each issue (ie. What strains are protected against in the HPV vaccine, approved locations for the Safe Haven law). Topic 1: The HPV Vaccine Debate

Basic Overview: The HPV vaccine is a series of three shots administered usually to children over a period of six months. Although the vaccine prevents cancers, parents debate whether or not the potential side effects are worth it.

While promiscuity may become more prominent, people will still try to reproduce whether at an appropriate age or not and when they do, it is better to have protection.

Level 5/Extra Credit/Going Beyond: Define Herd Immunity and explain how it applies to the debate: The vaccination of a large amount of the population to hopefully stop the spread of a certain contagious disease. If most people were protected from HPV now, the virus could stop or at least slow.

Basic Overview: Emergency contraception is used to prevent pregnancies after unprotected sex or original contraception is believed to have not worked.

What does a schools condom availability program look like? Who gets condoms, where, when and how?

There are set venues within schools where students can obtain condoms. for those who will do it anyway but it might promote promiscuity. Everyone involved is notified

So the big question is how would condom availability affect the student body? Does it promote unhealthy behavior or are you providing a healthy outlet for those that will do it anywaysif so is it even a schools place to get involv ed? It will be beneficial

Topic 4: The Safe Haven Law

Basic Overview: The Safe Haven Law allows new parents to leave unwanted newborn children on certain public doorsteps and remain completely anonymous while their child is adopted.

Time Frame: Infant must be under 72 hours

Approved Locations?

Police stations, hospitals, rescue squads, and fire houses

What happens to parental rights? Parents completely relinquish control What is Illinois Law exactly? As long as the child is less than three days old, parents can anonymously leave their children at anyone of the listed location plus universities to allow the child to be put into safe hands.

Does this promote people not taking accountability for their choices or provide an alternative to someone not able to provide for a child?

This is a good alternative to people who are simply unable to care for a child but it will raise ethical debates and there definitely people who will use this as an excuse to avoid responsibility.
