INFORMATION SYSTEMS PROPOSAL

Introduction:
R partnership's goal is to provide a wide selection of fairly priced quality Nostalgia Records music products and services catering to the diverse demographics of the Butte, Glenn, Tehama, and Yuba counties. We will offer personalized attention to customers in a relaxed atmosphere and allow customers to sample artists prior to purchase. Initial plans include location lease arrangements, advertising, equipment, fixtures, inventory, and working capital. However, this proposal illustrates the basic concepts and the strategic collaborative uses of various management information systems (MIS) applied to every facet of operations catered to the infrastructure of our business as well as the functions and needs of our employees.

Understanding Information Systems:

Technology has driven modern day business practices to incorporate various types MIS in order to have a competitive advantage. An information system is the collection of hardware, software, data, procedures, and people designed to generate information in order to support daily operations within a business. Its primary goal is to collect, process store, analyze, and disseminate information, economically as well as efficiently. "The purpose of MIS is to get the right information, to the right people, at the right time, in the right amount, and right format" (Rainer & Cegielski, 2011). Technological advances paved the way for computer-based information systems (CBIS) to provide fast, accurate, communication, collaboration within and among businesses using application programs designed to support specific tasks or business processes, thus, increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of employees (Rainer & Cegielski, 2011). Advantages & Disadvantages of Management Information Systems: MIS enable businesses to streamline the workforce and maximize the efficiency of the workflow including: 1. Cost efficiency on labor for the long-term 2. Highlighting their strengths and weaknesses using revenue reports, employee performance records, and inventory control applications, which provide an overall picture of the business' performance 3. Communication and planning tool to improve business processes and operations Effective management of customer data and feedback is an important asset in today's competitive music industry. Customer buying trends and behaviors not only help the business perform targeted marketing and promotional activities, but predict sales, revenue, and

inventory. However, a poor combination and implementation of MIS is definitely a disadvantage. Other drawbacks include: 1. Costly: system implementation and training as well as ongoing support and upgrade fees are expensive 2. Constant Maintenance: regular monitoring to prevent system breakdowns, interruptions, and security breaches 3. Ineffectiveness of information: quality of outputs depends on quality of inputs

Types of Management Information Systems:

Various types of MIS are often required to operate a business successfully. Deciding on which will be a perfect fit for our type of industry and infrastructure is the tricky part. The following are R suggestions on the ideal types of MIS implementations necessary to bring Nostalgia Records into fruition. Office Information Systems (OIS): OIS are systems of hardware, software, and networks to facilitate communication among employees and streamline the workflow. OIS supports a wide range of business office activities including scheduling, documents, messages, graphics, accounting, and payroll. Hardware support includes computers, modems, network routers, scanners, copiers, fax machines, and multi-line phone systems. Software support includes word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation

graphics, e-mail, groupware, and personal information management and security (Rainer & Cegielski, 2011). Recommended software includes Microsoft Office 2010, which contains MSWord, MSExcel, MSAccess, and MS Outlook accompanied by Adobe Creative Suite 6. Transaction Processing Systems (TPS): TPS are systems of business data processing that capture and process data generated during daily transactions such as sales, deposits, payments, orders, and accounting related transactions (Rainer & Cegielski, 2011). Online transaction processing (OLTP) used for real-time transactions such as sales and inventory while payroll, invoicing, and billing are more efficiently process on a batch basis. Management Recording Systems (MRS): MRS are systems evolved from TPS that generate accurate, timely and organized information for managers, stakeholders, and staff to track progress, supervise activities, solve problems, and aid in business decisions (Rainer & Cegielski, 2011). Enterprise Management Systems (EMS): EMS systems designed and built around predefined best practices to manage internal supply chains and inventories by integrating information via intranets within the business. Analyses of customer data to best determine real-time supply and demand trends. RecordTrak ~ POS computerized Inventory Control Software: Trak Systems provides accurate timely inventory management information to compete in today's competitive retail recording sales market. RecordTrak is the leading point of sale (POS) computerized inventory control designed specifically for retail music stores and record stores (Trak Systems, 2013). A complete hardware and software management system, which includes computerized cash registers, scan bar codes, print receipts, cash drawer controls, and real-time inventory updates. Software modules include POS, ordering, returns, rentals, and complete inventory management as well as compatibility with SoundScan (Trak Systems, 2013). RecordTrak replaces the need for accounting and inventory software such as Peachtree or Quickbooks with inventory options. Conclusion: The proper implementation and usage of MIS is vital to the success of any type of business, big or small. In the competitive industry of retail recording sales, real-time information is crucial maintaining a strong customer base and remaining in business.
