COMPRESSORS K1/K4
I - Selection and proper use Beside the refrigerating capacity - which remain, of course, the first factor in the selection of the type of compressor to be used for a certain installation - the following fundamental elements must be taken into account in order to obtain a long and troublefree operation from the machine: 1 Avoid overloading the electric motor 2 Assure proper removal of heat transmitted by the motor 3 Avoid excessive heating of the compressor discharge. Let us examine hereafter the reasons why this factor must be carefully taken into account, and how, on the consequence of this, the selection of the compressor should be done.
COMPRESSEURS K1/K4
We must consider that a semihermetic compressor is a compressor with unchanging displaced volume (that is, cylinder volume multiplied by rpms) and electric motor power. For this reason, the power absorbed by the compressor will increase according to the increase in evaporation temperature. For instance, a compressor having a bore of 42 mm and a stroke of 28 mm will absorb approx.: 3/4 HP at 20C 1 HP at 5, 1.3 HP at +5C. For open-type compressors, these differences are compensated by changing the motor pulley and therefore the number of revolutions of the compressor. This is not possible in semi-hermetic models. For this reason and in order to
3/4 HP. -20C 1HP a -5C 1.3 HP a +5C.
In order to avoid overloading the electric motor, the compressor must not work at an evaporation temperature higher than the one foreseen in the catalogue. As a consequence of this, you should choose the compressor which is best suited to the different applications mentioned above. After selecting the right model of compressor, a special care must be taken and appropriate measures must be used in order to avoid overloads resulting from the starting following the defrost. In order to obtain this, we would suggest to employ the specially designed valves for keeping a constant pressure inside the compressor crankcase, or at least for keeping a possible increase in pressure within reasonable limits, even when the pressure in the evaporator increases. To obtain this goal, other measures can be taken, beside said valves.
Overloads of the electric motor can also be due to a too high condensation, and therefore the installer must make sure that the condenser receives a sufficient quantity of fresh air or water, and also make sure that the condensing medium is not re-circulated. Another element which can

II - Proper removal of heat transmitted by the motor The heat dispersed by the electric motor, when not removed from the body, and by the ambient air, accumulates and overheats the motor windings, thereby endangering their insulation. In "Dorin" compressors, said heat removal - and therefore cooling down of the motor is achieved by means of the suction gases passing through and around the motor itself. This cooling down is more effective when the evaporation temperature is higher (and therefore gases are more dense). It becomes poor at low and very low temperature, when the weight of the suctioned gases is small, and therefore its ability to subtract heat is poor. Moreover, under this operating condition, the overheating at the discharge is high, and the corresponding quantity of hightemperature heat adds up to that dispersed by the motor. From the above it appears the necessity of arranging a further cooling system, which can be one of the following: 1 Direct the air flow from a fan on the compressor body. In aircooled units, it is the condenser fan itself which hits the compressor with its outlet air. 2 Use a water-cooled head, which, beside removing overheat,

III -Excessive heating of the compressor discharge. III - Surriscaldamento allo scarico. Overheating of the compressor discharge occurs when the compressor is operating at a high compression ratio, and it is particularly evident when using the refrigerant R22. This temperature rise should be avoided, since it causes an alteration of the oil, and it helps chemical reactions, with resulting acid compounds. In the long run, this reduces the mechanical strength of materials out of which the discharge valve units are made. The ways to avoid this, are those stated in the previous paragraph, namely : Head cooling fans of compressors, water-cooled heads, and operation under slightly damp conditions. In conclusion, the selection of the compressor model must be made by taking as a basis the maximum evaporation temperature for the operation foreseen in installation, and by planning heat removal from motor and head at low temperatures. Compressors for refrigeration, "CS" models, can also be em-

Compressors f or high evaporation temperatures, "C" models (conditioning) must be employed for this use only, since their special design does not make them suitable for use with high compression ratios (low evaporating temperature).
IV - Selection of condensing units with semi-hermetic compressor. Also air and water condensing units are standard manufactured for the above-mentioned three different applications, namely : - "CC" - Air conditioning - "CS" - Refrigeration - "CB/SB" - Low evaporating temperature The criteria and reasons for the choice of a condensing unit are, as a general rule, the same as stated for the compressors.
Tale resistenza viene f ornita a richiesta.
3 It is always recommended to fit an oil heater in the compressor crankcase, in order to avoid possible storage of refrigerant inside the crankcase. This phenomenon can essentially take place if the compressor is stopped for a long time. On the oil level side, the compressor crankcase is already equipped with a hole where the resistance may be applied. This resistance is provided on demand of customers. The more widespread resistances are 100 or 200 Watts on the basis of the ambient temperature. Voltages are all equivalent to 220 V /50 Hz. 4 For low temperature applications, (-30C/-50C), use always water-cooled heads; alternatively, fit an adequate fan for cooling the heads and/or liquid injection DTC.
6 The oil pressure gauge must have a scale extending up to 12 or 15 atmospheres. The oil pressure must exceed the pressure inside the crankcase by about 3-4 atmospheres. 7 The oil pressure control valve is calibrated by manufacturer. 8 For checking lubrication use differential pressure switches equipped with a timer of 45" or 60" (at maximum) and which can be manually restarted. (For the check of this valve, see corresponding instructions). 9 After the compressor has been stopped for a few days (or for many hours), it is advisable to restart it using little current impulses, letting the compressor make only some revolutions. At the beginning you may notice several valve knockings. In this case, restart the compressor at brief intervals, letting it run for a few seconds, until the knockings cease. At this point, the compressor may be used normally, as this means that the liquid which had been accumulated in the suction line has already been absorbed and that now the compressor sucks only vapour.

1- constant, or starting, overload; 2- missing of phase on feeding; 3- too high or too low voltage; 4- locked rotor; 5- insufficient cooling; 6- any other reasons that may cause heating exceed the fixed limit on one phase, at least.
The protection consists of three sensors immersed into each winding's phase. This feeler is a thermistor, that is semi-conductor, the resistance of which varies with temperature. Figure 1 shows the resistance curve consequently to temperature variation. The value of temperature where the semi-conductor resistance has a vanishing point, is the value of operating time.
The three thermistors immersed into winding are series connected between themselves and terminals are taken-out by two single pole terminal seals placed inside the electrical connections box. These electrical connections are connected to an external device which makes the circuit to remote control switch when the thermistors resistance (or just one thermistor ) varies over the fixed value. This external device is series connected with other control instruments of the refrigerating system.
11-1
The device breaks the circuit again as soon as the winding temperature falls below the setting and automatically reset the motor.
In the event that the superheating does not cease, it will occur a succession of motor starting and stopping automatically regulated in such a way that the winding temperature never exceeds the fixed value. Cut off or irregular contact on thermistors connection, resulting in increased resistance, prevents the motor starting, as well as break the circuit to the external device makes the circuit to the remote control switch and prevents the motor starting. The thermistor protection is an integral protection and does not require any other kind of protection. Another important advantage is that this is motor-temperature controlled protection and does not need to be previously regulated for a certain motor-load, hence it is suitable for operating and load variations of refrigerating compressors.

However, for the above cases there is no valid protection. As already said, this motor protection consists of three thermistors, each one in a motor phase. They are connected in series between themselves and two terminals from compressor. Thermistors are f eeded through a control device at 220 Volt 50-60 cycle with more or less 10 % tolerance in +20C up to +50C ambient temperature. This control device contains a: - Transformer which reduces the voltage to the permissible for thermistors during the operation, that is a minus-equal 2 V direct current (exit terminals 1-2). - A switch which has to be placed in serie with the other safety device (pressostat thermostat etc..). This switch open or close the circuit of the coil of the contactor of the compressor depending the motor temperature. Enclosed herewith please find diagram of connections for thermistor protection and relay. Fig 2.3.4. Restart, after protection operating time, is automatic; however, an apparatus for manual resetting can be fitted on. We recommend the application of this apparatus so that the operator can realise the reason, which caused the protection to operate. The cold resistance of three thermistors must be between 75
Fig 2.3.4. In order to prevent the relay to be affected by compressor and fan vibrations, it is advantageous to mount the relay on panel board, independently from the refrigerant unit. On refrigerating units with compressor and panel board buit in, it may be advantageous to mount the relay on elastic suspension in order to prevent that vibrations affect the relay operation.
The incidental break-out of thermistors circuit makes the circuit, hence their operation is selfcontrolled.

If the available water comes from a cooling tower, it will be necessary to order a unit with a condenser suited thereto, and fitted with the appropriate connections. With water coming from a tower, the water itself should be renewed in the proportions suggested by the manufacturer of the cooling towers.
In low-temperature installations, it must be made sure that the compressor is properly cooled, and this can be obtained in the following ways: 1 Water condensing units: with the use of water-cooled heads; 2 Units with remote air condenser : by installing a suitable fan blowing air onto the compressor. 3 Units with air condenser assembled on the frame: by placing the condenser fan in such a way as to have the air blow onto the compressor.

Installation of these devices is required whenever difficulties in the oil return of the compressor are to be expected, as well as remarkable spilling of the refrigerant liquid inside the compressor crankcase when the system is idle, so that, when the system is started again, there occurs a strong boiling of oil inside the crankcase, with the ensuing possibility of heavy dragging of oil towards the condenser. Their adoption is therefore particularly recommended in systems

The charging pipe must be connected to said connection in such a way as to charge refrigerant in vapour state. Avoid pouring coolant in liquid state inside the compressor crankcase. As soon as there is a slight pressure inside the system, start the compressor and commence to charge. When charging, check the flow of coolant by means of the high and low pressure gauges, in order to avoid overloading the motor and the condenser. On the liquid sight glass the liquid flow -to be installed on the liquid line- check when charge is sufficient. At this point, charging must be discontinued in order not to overload the system. If the system was properly checked for leakage, it is not nec-
7- Verifica del livello olio 7-Check the oil level. Come sopra accennato, dopo che un'installazione finita e portata a regime, occore verificare Work the system at operating speed and let it run for some time. Make sure that the oil level remains constant at approximately the middle line of the sight glass. This check must be made by stopping the compressor for a moment, so that the oil level can settle. After which, start the compressor again. Repeat this operation twice or three times at approximately half an hour between them. In a lowering of the oil level can be noticed, it will be necessary to add more oil of the quality specified in the test tag, until the above-mentioned level of oil is restored. Keep in mind that a certain quantity of oil is distributed in all the pipes of the system and in the evaporator, while a certain portion remains permanently mixed to the liquid refrigerant.

11 - Checking of safety device adjustments. Once the installation is completed, it is necessary to perform a check-out of the devices designed for the safety operation of the system, namely : - high pressure switch : this is actuated when impairing condensation, that is, by checking water flow towards the water condensers, and shutting off air flow towards the air condensers. On the service gauge installed on the high pressure side will give the value of the pressure at which the pressure switch is actuated. It is advisable not to exceed a pressure corresponding at a condensing temperature of +55C ( for the most parts of refrigerants) or in any case at +25 bars ( maximum operating pressure of the compressor)

- motor protection switch : as it is known, the motor of a refrigerating unit must have power sufficient to meet the maximum demand to be expected under the heaviest operating conditions : the one when the system is started, during the time required for reaching the operating conditions of the system, or those taking place after defrosting. These must be considered as occurring at the highest temperatures of ambient air or of condensation water. As stated elsewhere, special measures can be taken to reduce these overloads. 12 Checking of voltage.
12-1
10
To make sure that no voltage drops occur, it is necessary to check the terminals voltage at the moment of starting the compressor, as at starting the voltage drops more than 10 %, the motor does not start properly and the starting phase burns out asily, consequently the compressor is out of order.
It is advisable, particularly for the single-phase compressors, to apply a pressure limiting valve on the suction line of the crankcase; these valves are manufactured by several companies, which supply also the expansion valves. Please note that when the whole burns out, it is most important to effect a perfect cleaning of the system, change the oil and gas in order to remove acid substances consequent to motor burning; if not removed, these acids could etch the insulation of new compressor, causing motor burning again. To avoid this inconvenient, there are special filters (Sporlan, Danfoss, Flica, etc.) to be inserted

The pressure switch setting must be 0.8 bas and must already adjusted in the factory. The delayed action incorporated timer, which must be adjusted from 45 to 90 seconds ( It is advisable 60 ) enables the pressure rise on starting and avoids irritating interruptions in the event of brief pressure drops. It is advisable that the oil pressure switch be equipped with a manual reset button.

R : Ricevitore dolio S : Separatore dolio C : Compressore V : Valvola a gallegiante
IV- Installation. The oil receiver is placed above the float valve at the height necessary to provide a good oil flow to the valves a regulating valve can also be used, placed in the connections between the receiver and the suction line, set to maintain the right pressure. In this case, we can mount the receiver at the same height as the crankcases. When starting a new system, the oil receiver must be filed to maximum oil level, but not overflow. After at least two hours running, check the oil level and top up. Check again after a couple of days. During subsequent periodic checks, add oil only if the oil level drops below sight glass minimum. Check the pulley-motor alignment with the compressor flywheel and the right tension of the belts. So that the belts adhere well to the grooves, it is advisable to assemble the motor to the left of the compressor, looking at it from the direction of the flywheel. This considering that the compressor turns in a clockwise direction. The pulley of the motor must be dynamically balanced so that it does not transmit vibrations to the refrigerating unit.

Checking oil level Once the compressor has been working for a couple hours, stop it and check that the oil is at about the half level of the oil sight glass. This check must be done at least once in a month, always stopping the compressor for a moment and after it ahs been running for at least an hour. In the event of the oil being far below the centre of the oil sight glass, add more oil to bring the level back to 3-4 mm above the centre of the glass (see instruction). In the event of the level exceeding the oil sight glass, remove the excess by means of the plug situated in the lower part under the rear hub.
When the compressor has not been used for many hours or several days, start it with small current pulses so that the compressor only turns a couple of times. One is likely to hear the valve beats during the initial revolutions. In that case start it running for a couple of seconds or more, until one no longer hears the above mentioned beats. One can then leave the compressor running because it means that the liquid which had accumulated in the suction duct has all been absorbed and the compressor now takes in only vapour. To avoid transfers of liquid in the compressor, insert a vertical liquid separator on the suction duct and as close as possible to the compressor. This device is always recommended to stop the valves from breaking. Check that the suction valve ahs no signs of hoarfrost because this means that the plant is not well regulated and that there is a return excess of cooling liquid.
For low temperature applications (-30C / -45C), it is advisable to use water cooled heads or a special head cooling fan that cools the body of the compressor.
