R & C of Sexual Activity: Lesson 1, Intro to Sex Ed

Type of Work: Indy Product: Doc/Quick Reading Class Time: 3/4 Period EOC: Submit to Schoology (Lesson 1) Due: Next Period
Concept: To reduce sexual risk behaviors and related health problems among youth, schools and other youthserving organizations can help young people adopt lifelong attitudes and behaviors that support their health and well-beingincluding behaviors that reduce their risk for HIV, other STDs, and unintended pregnancy. How best to do this is of much public concern and debate because sex education is filled with inherent controversy as it is values-based. Goal: Differentiate between Abstinence Only, Comprehensive and Abstinence Plus (Our Curriculum). Discuss the controversy in sex education and identify what is and isnt the program at HSHS to alleviate any concern as to what is taught and why. Directions: Do only one Level. Abstinence-Only Sex Ed Definition:
Abstinence-only sex education is a mostly American form of sex education that teaches abstinence from sex, and often excludes many other types of sexual and reproductive health education, particularly regarding birth control and safe sex. This type of sex education promotes sexual abstinence until marriage and avoids discussion of use of contraceptives. Proponents of abstinence-only sex education argue that this approach is superior to comprehensive sex education because it emphasizes the teaching of morality that limits sex to that within the bounds of marriage, and that sex before marriage and at a young age has heavy physical and emotional costs

Comprehensive Sex Ed
Comprehensive course of action by the school, calculated to bring about the socially desirable attitudes, practices and personal conduct on the part of children and adults, that will best protect the individual as a human and the family as a social institution. Comprehensive sex education, by contrast, covers the use of contraceptives as well as abstinence. Evaluations of comprehensive sex education programs show that these programs can help youth delay onset of sexual activity, reduce the frequency of sexual activity, reduce number of sexual partners, and increase condom and contraceptive use.

Abstinence Plus/First Sex Ed

Teaching about abstinence as the best method for avoiding sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancy, but also teaching about condoms and contraception.

4
What is taught: Why its taught this way:

This type of education teaches about the benefits of condoms and contraception as well as about their failure rates
The program understood that it would not be possible to stop all teenagers from having sex, but still stressed that abstinence is the only guaranteed way of avoiding unwanted pregnancies and contraction of STDs

What are 3 benefits to abstinence (besides the obvious pregnancy, STDs/HIV)? 1. More self respect and more respect for each other.

2. Security that you're not being pursued for sexual reasons. 3. Greater chance of faithfulness in marriage, and trust in your partner's ability to control him/herself with other people. What are 3 things that could happen when someone starts to become sexually active? -They could get pregnant/STD/HIVetc. -They could have lower self esteem and loose respect for themselves. -They could lose friends because now they are spending all their time with their partner. When should a person become sexually active in your opinion? When you are emotionally ready, and are in the point of your life where you are able to handle the consequences like an adult. Explain the controversy as it relates to how sex ed is taught (not your opinion but an explanation of the controversy. Include the terms values). The controversy is whether it is okay to teach about condoms and contraception because one could argue that this promotes teens
to have sex. Define harm reduction and apply it to this debate. What are your thoughts on harm reduction? What are two other forms of harm reduction. List them.

Harm reduction is a term that applies to a range of public health policies that are designed to reduce the harmful consequences associated with various human behaviors, some of which are illegal. Harm reduction policies are used to manage behaviors such as recreational drug use and sex work in numerous settings that range from services through to geographical regions.
