(3 marks) Calculate the maximum bending moment and hence the maximum compressive and tensile stresses. (6 marks) Sketch the bending stress distribution diagram indicating the maximum compressive and tensile stresses. (2 marks) Find the radius of curvature of the beam if the modulus of elasticity is 120 GN/m2. (2 marks)

Q2.

A length of hollow steel shaft transmits 900kW at 160 rev/min. The maximum shear stress is not to exceed 60 MN/m2 and the inside diameter is to be 0.7 times the outside diameter. Determine (a) (b) (c) the torque transmitted. (3 marks) the outside and inside diameters of the shaft. (4 marks) the maximum and minimum shear stresses experienced by the shaft and hence sketch the shear stress distribution diagram. (6 marks)

Q3.

Power is transmitted between two shafts by a V-belt passing round two pulleys of equal diameters 0.3 m, the groove angle being 40. If the belt has a mass of 1.4 kg/m and the maximum permissible tension is 2000 N, calculate the power that be can be transmitted at a shaft speed of 300 rpm. The coefficient of friction between belt and pulley is 0.2 (13 marks)

Q4.

An object of mass m kg is attached to the end of a cord of length one metre and is whirled in a vertical plane. Calculate with the aid of a sketch for each case (a) (b) the minimum rotational speed in rpm below which the tension in the cord disappears; (6 marks) the maximum value of the mass, m so that the maximum tension in the cord will not exceed 500 N when the object is rotated at a speed of 180 rpm. A 4-wheeled vehicle of mass 1200 kg descends a slope of 1 in 5. Each axle of the car with its two wheels has a radius of gyration of 450 mm and a mass of 130 kg. Given that the diameter of the wheel is 850 mm, and that the tractive resistance is 250 N, calculate, with the aid of a sketch (2 marks), the (a) (b) (c) (d) moment of inertia of two wheels and its axles about its rotation axis.
