Grade 10 WLD 1060 Introduction to Wilderness Navigation

Grade: 10 Lesson Duration: 100 minutes Date: Nov. 13, 2013 CTS Cluster: Natural Resources (NAT) Course: WLD 1060 Wilderness Navigation OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES Specific Learning Outcomes: The student will: 1. Identify and describe different types of navigation techniques, and their development 2. Identify and describe different types of maps, including: topographical, hydrographical, satellite imagery, others 4. Demonstrate use of a variety of navigational devices, including: maps (paper and digital), compasses, Romer scale, GPS, other devices 6.3Demonstrate teamwork skills to: Work with others and participate in projects and tasks LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR LESSON The student will: 1. Identify and describe different types of navigation techniques and maps 2. Demonstrate use of a map and compass in an interactive group activity 3. Attention Grabber: Direction Game everyone stands up and faces the front of the classroom. Call out directions (north, south, north-east, south-west, etc.). Students must turn and face the direction that is called out. If the student turns the way or hesitates too long, they are out and must sit down. Play for 5 minutes. Expectations/Objectives: Students will participate in an interactive lesson introducing them to some of the topics that are explored in Wilderness 1060: Wilderness Navigation.

Advance Organizer: Welcome to the first day of Wilderness Navigation! On the Smart Board, you will find the outline for todays lesson. In todays lesson you will be introduced to some of the topics that we will explore in this course, Wilderness Navigation. You will spend the majority of the lesson participating in a group activity the purpose of the activity is to introduce you to some of the topics that we will explore in this course. Before we get to the main activity for today we will go over the outline for the module. LESSON BODY (80 min.) Activity #1: Intro to Wilderness Navigation (20 minutes) Introduction/Transition: Overview of module outline discuss the following with students: expectations, activities, assignments, routines, timeline/schedule, etc. Development/Monitoring: Take time to frequently ask students if they have any questions, comments, or concerns about the module outline. Allow time for discussion between students. Check for understanding often. Follow-up/Assessment: Check for understanding by asking a few general questions about the module outline. Ask for input about class expectations do students agree with the expectations. If not, what would students change? Activity #2: QR Code Scavenger Hunt (45 minutes) Introduction/Transition: Explain the activity to the students students will work in small groups of 3-4 people. As a group they will work together to look for QR codes that have been put up around the class. At each QR code there will be a question for you to answer and the QR code will give you information to answer the questions. Students will record their answers on the activity sheets provided. Students will also record the compass bearing of each QR code on their activity sheet. There are 8 QR codes to find in total. Development/Monitoring: Hand out activity sheets one for each group. Once the groups get their activity sheets they may begin the activity. Set a timer for 35 minutes (approximately). Follow-Up/Assessment: Once all groups have completed the activity or the time is up, have students return to their spots. Ask students if they had any difficulties with the activity loading QR codes, answering questions, etc. Activity #3: Review (15 minutes) Introduction/Transition: Students should now be seated in their desks again. We will now over each question, one by one. A candy reward will be given to any students who answer a question correctly. Students can only answer once. Students should write the correct answer on their sheets for future reference. Development/Monitoring: Ensure all students are on-task and participating in the activity. Spend time discussing each question in more detail, if time permits. Follow-Up/Assessment: Ask students what they thought about the activity? What did they like about it? What didnt they like? Sponge Activity: I Spy Compass Bearing Game LESSON CLOSURE (10 min.): Exit Slip - In your group complete the exit slip questions that are located on the back of the assignment sheet. When you have completed the questions, I will collect your sheets. Questions Feel free to ask any questions you may have about todays lesson while you are finishing up your exit slip. These sheets will be returned to you next class.
