Background The program was initiated following the MECs intervention to address substance abuse specifically (Nyaope) by youth in Hammanskraal/Temba which resulted in 84 Young people volunteering to go for rehabilitation and 17 young people successfully completing the 8 week program. The department has strengthened in Substance Abuse prevention program to assist and encourage more young people to access and benefit from government services. The program has been well received by the community in Hammanskraal with more young people coming forward requesting assistance with their addiction. The initiative also saw the MEC, MMC for Public Safety and Local Councillors visiting the families of the 3 rehabilitated youth to interact with their families and provide support. The 17 young people who successfully completed their rehabilitation program are placed on the National Youth Services program as Youth Ambassadors against Substance Abuse and encouraging their peers to seek assistance through rehabilitation Purpose To reduce crime, improve social cohesion prevention activity and improve the lives of young people by discouraging substance use before it results in costly and life-threatening consequences. Promote institutional and collaborative improvement. Engages in information dissemination and education, these initiative supports the fundamental activities of a coalition and community process. These activities are needed by community to produce the changes of attitude and behavior that will yield protection against substance abuse and its destructive impact. Objectives To provide opportunity for reclaiming the lives of young people at risk for or with substance abuse. To provide community awareness regarding the risks and sequences of substance abuse while focusing on protection against its destructive impact. To mobilize youth to participate in crime prevention initiatives To enhance awareness on substance abuse issues and give voice to concerns that may not have had a venue for discussion To mobilize stakeholders to join forces in efforts geared towards preventing substance abuse 2

To capture the attention of key stakeholders in order to advocate for increased information and service delivery that will advance vulnerable youth To develop participants understanding on the issue of substance abuse, and the range services that government and civil society offers to address the problem

Expected outcomes A plan outlining joint efforts by government, Civil Society, Business, Labour, Faith based Organizations, other interest groups, and SAPS to devote an increased commitment with resources, skills and capacity Breaking the silence of substance abuse and community participation on issues of substance abuse. Emphasis peoples personal responsibilities for their own feelings, thoughts and behavior. Encourages an active awareness of present situation, and also incorporates communication to look at different ways of behaving that may be useful in changing the way one see life Establishment of learner safety desk to encourage change of behavior. To reduce destructive behavior within the school and influence learner to learner engagement on issues affecting their learning Reduce unemployment and youth participation and support Youth playing role in reducing crime in their community to have a sense of belonging and responsibility in the community Job opportunity by empowering young people to gain leadership skills, develop a sense of responsibility Organizational practices
