Grace - Jeff Buckley

Full Analysis

Intro (0:00 - 0:26)

The key is not yet clear - it is just a series of minor chords. Guitar whispers - pick a note with volume down then turn up quickly-much reverb and delay. Loud unison E minor chord with scoops on the tremolo arm and a roll on the crash. Full band enter. Section is in D major. Main feature is chord pattern played high on a clean guitar. (or with a tiny bit of distortion)

Verse (0:26 - 0:48)

Vocals enter and electric guitar riff drops out. Electric guitar plays broken chords. Guitar whispers return. Acoustic Guitar more prominent - you can hear the pick playing against the strings. Modal chords.

Pre-chorus (0:49 - 1:11)

Guitar whispers drop out. Vocal range starts to get higher in pitch. Section mostly in Eminor.

Chorus (1:11 - 1:29)

Backing vocals enter-often doubling main line. Strings heard subtly in background. Modal again - centered around E. Drum rhythm straight and a little more sparse.

Link (1:30 - 1.55)

Same as intro but with Mandolin effect added on acoustic. Vocal Oooo added.

Verse 2 (1:56 - 2:19)

Same as Verse 1 with added effects. Descending slide on Guitar. Much Delay. Trill on strings imitating Guitar.

Pre-chorus (2:19 - 2:41)

Same as Pre-chorus 1. Pizzicato strings added.

Grace - Jeff Buckley

Chorus (2:41 - 2:59)

Same as Chorus 1. Drum roll leads to mid 8.

Mid 8 (3:00 - 3:41)

Strings play long sustained notes. Multi- tracked vocals harmonies - polyphonic texture. Drum plays snare focused rhythm. Same chord sequence as for pre-chorus but produced differently. Main vocal line improvises a melody above backing. Vocal is EQd so it sounds as if hes on a telephone. (Removes higher frequencies)

Link (3:41 - 3:52)

Use of acoustic guitar effects-percussive hits on body and strings. As for other links/intros.

Verse 3 (4:07 - 4:26)

Vocal is more intense and forceful. Use of higher vocal range. More special effects are added as the section develops. More cymbals used.

Outro (4:26 - 5:19)

String are brought to the forefront of the instruments. Very high vocal improvisations - up a sopranos range! An electric guitar with a anger effect. Song ends with a short unaccompanied modal vocal phrase. Important Features The piece modulates from Modal to Major tonality. (Modal sections based on modes - not classical scales e.g. Gmajor, Fmajor etc.)
