project summary

Peter Shannon, artistic director and conductor of the Savannah Philharmonic Symphony

Designed for the Savannah Philharmonic Symphony, The Savannah Conservatory of Music is a new center for music education and performance experience unlike Savannah has ever had before. The center exists as a landmark destination for the city and will provide a variety of performance facilities for the Savannah Philharmonic Symphony and other community or visiting groups. A theatre hosts live performance; unlike a cinema or auditorium, it is not meant only for presentation. Its a space where audience and performers exchange dialogue, attention, and energy. A successful theatre supports and enhances this exchange.

A concert or recital hall are theatres for the performance of music. Acoustical requirements shape the volume and form of the theatre so that no amplification is required. Characteristic of this theatre type is that performers and audience share the same space- there is no architectural separation between stage and auditorium. In todays modern age, live music performances are extraordinarily varied and arent used exclusively for acoustic or orchestral music. A new hall should allow flexibility for adaptable uses such as dance, amplified music, alternative music performance, multi-media performance, and small theatre.

Situated in a relatively new arts and culture district, the Young Center for Performing Arts utilizes the historic fabric of the old Gooderham and Worts Distillary as the backdrop for theatre, music, and learning. The overall design is characterized by a raw industrial feel, with preserved features of the historic structure, and the addition of heavy Douglas Fir timber beams and steel to respect the nature of the site. By adaptively re-using tank houses 9 and 10, the signature 2-story lobby space is created by enclosing the space between the two brick stuctures, and creates a public gatherering space for chance encounters between patrons, visitors, students, and actors. The Young Center contains four theaters in addition to studios, rehersal, classroom, reference library, atrium cafe, and office spaces. All theatre spaces are designed to be reconfigurable and flexible performance spaces. The Marilyn and Charles Baillie Theatre, Michael Young Theatre, Tank House Black Box Theatre, and Kevin and Roger Garland Cabaret Theatre seat 315, 207, 75, and 90 people, respectively.

Founder of Savannah, James Edward Ogelthorpe

Savannahs acclaimed urban design plan conceived by General James Ogelthorpe when he laid out the city in 1733 is revered and imitated all over the world. Each ward unit is focused around a central public square, and the system can be easily repeated and expanded with growth. Over time, the function of Savannahs squares have changed from pragmatic uses such as farming and military gathering and training places to spaces meant for leisure, enjoyment, and memorialization. At times, the rigid grid of Savannah is unnoticed due to the widespread growth of the Live Oak trees native to the area, some of which are more than 100 years old. The squares serve to break up the repetition of the grid. This overpowering insertion of nature within the Ogelthorpes plan provide an interesting juxtaposition between the measured and the organic. The Savannah Rivers history of shipping is another point of interest. While modes of transport have changed drastically over time, the purpose remains essentially the same. Savannah imports goods and products from all over the world, much of which is wasteful and unnecessary.

The original intent for the creation of the site model was to form a paper impression of the topography from a mold. In reality, the results of the paper mold were unsatisfactory and the more interesting part of the process became the waffle mold used to form the paper and allow water to drain as the paper dried. This unexpected resulted yielded a new idea that was much better than the originally intended. By further exploring possibilities with the waffle mold, a new discovery was made by shaping and inserting cut blocks into the mold. This solution more successfully illustrates the grided nature of Savannah, and the adaptability of the grid to accommodate new features.

Through the intuitive acts of making, many ideas emerged and the strongest was chosen to refine into an architecture. The first gesture made was to provide a public staircase through the building linking all three levels of the site and downtown Savannah with River street. It was importaint to maintain the historic character of river street in massing and materiality. The theatre, in contrast, would be a place of surprise, delight, and intrique. These ideas would become the driving rules and constraints for the duration of the project

A means of egress must provide: A continuous and unobstructed path of exit travel from any occupied point in a building to a public way, which is a space such as a street or alley, permanently dedicated for public use. A direction of flow to every means of egress, leading from an occupied space to a final safe outside area, away from any hazard or emergency in the building. Exit must remain same size or get larger as the building occupants proceed downstream from areas of lesser safety to areas of greater safety and ultimately out of the building through the exit discharge. At least two different egress paths should lead from the interior of a building to the outside at ground level.
