Safety comes first at Blues and Brews event
Dear Editor: Wed like to respond to concerns raised in William Rooks letter regarding our upcoming fundraiser, Blues and Brews. While the Village has many family activities throughout the year, Blues and Brewslike the successful fall Wine Walk, now in its 10th yearis specifically for adults. With this event, safety is our first concern. Participation is limited to those over 21, and ID is checked at the launch site by members of the three organizations benefiting from the event: Rancho Santa Botanic Garden, Shoes That Fit and and Childrens Auxiliary-West End. Participants receive tickets which limit the number of tastes. Indivduals working at the tasting stations are trained, and tasting glasses are marked to allow for accurate pours of 2.5 ounces (including foam). Delicious food and non-alcoholic beverages are also available for participants. To help make the event even safer, Blues and Brews partner with the Claremont Police who provide professional crossing guards at busy intersections during the event. The Claremont chapter of the American Red Cross provides event information and security in the Village. In appreciation for their contributions to this event a generous donation is made to the 4 participating non-profit groups. More than 29 locations on both sides of Indian Hill are participating as tasting stations, 12 jazz and blues bands will be playing throughout the Village, and numerous local restaurants and markets have contributed refreshments to the event. Those of us on the event committee have worked hard to create a balance of fun and responsibility, and look forward to seeing you in the Village on July 3rd!

Dear Editor: I cant thank the voters of Claremont enough for their support in the recent congressional primary. My victory sets the stage for the next step. I have never felt more ready and sure of our chances to defeat David Dreier. On election night, my opponent was exposed as vulnerable. His candidacy was opposed by an unknown, underfunded, 45-year-old horseshoer from Rancho Cucamonga who spent less than $4000 on his campaign. Still, he managed to capture one-third of the vote in San Bernardino County. This sent a message loud and cleareven the party faithful are tired of Dreier. The 26th District is waking up to David Dreiers true character. He claims to support the middle class, but his vot-

ing record tells a much different story. In the past year, my opponent has voted against equal pay for women, health insurance reform, protections for consumers from unscrupulous credit card companies and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which is helping to put our nation back on the right track. Its not surprising he is so out of touch. Hes never felt the pressure of supporting a family and has received a steady paycheck and health insurance courtesy of the taxpayers during his three-decades in public office. Like many Americans, I have struggled. In the boom and bust of the 80s, I was downsized but, with my family at my side, we invested our savings in an idea and have grown Warner International Periodical Services into one of the top niche magazine distribution companies in the country. I will draw on my life experience to be a true representative of my community. I will work to renew the promise of Americas public education, push for investment in clean and renewable energy resources and restore our competitive edge by creating the jobs of the 21st century. Thank you for your continued support.

The Architectural Commission meets tonight in a regular session at 7 p.m. in City Council chambers at 225 W. Second St. A public hearing will be conducted during the meeting to review the Harvey Mudd College Master Plan. The remaining agenda contains routine administrative matters. The Traffic and Transportation Commission meets on Thursday, June 24 at 7 p.m., also in council chambers. The commissions agenda features a review of a crosswalk on Mountain Avenue north of Harrison Avenue near El Roble Intermediate School. The commission is recommending that the crosswalk be installed at Tenth Street and Mountain Avenue because the intersection is equidistant from existing signals at Foothill Boulevard and El Roble School and Tenth Street is a through

street intersection. Both meetings are open to the public. The Independence Day Committee meets tomorrow, Thursday, June 24 at 7 p.m. at the Hughes Community Center, 1700 Danbury Rd. The agenda for the committee includes reports from a number of subcommittees involved with the Independence Day celebration. Shift in Claremont library hours begins in July

conomy measures at the county level will reach the local level in July when Los Angeles County Library branches, including Claremont, standardize hours throughout the system. Sources at the Los Angeles County Library System made it very clear the decision did not involve local library officials.
Claremont will actually benefit from the change. Although the library will be closed on Mondays, hours during the rest of the week will exceed the present hours. Beginning July 12, the library will be open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. For information on donating to the library, visit the Friends of the Claremont Librarys website at www.claremontlibrary.org. Inquiries about the librarys budget or the change in hours are being directed to Chief Deputy County Librarian Terri Maguire at 562-940-8418 or to Regional Administrator for the East County Region Donna Banos at 626-960-2661.

Claremont Red Cross names top volunteers

rida Ross-Palomino was announced as Volunteer of the Year at the Claremont Chapter of the American Red Cross annual meeting June 16 in Oldenborg Hall at Pomona College.

During the event, Professor and Magician Dale Salwak shared his experiences as a guest at the Biennial Spring Friendship Arts Festival in North Korea, a rare opportunity for an American. The multipurpose evening included a number of awards and election of officers for the chapter for the coming year. The Chapter is marking 93 years of service to the community and beyond as a part of the worldwide humanitarian organization. Chapter Executive Director Michael Conley has been known to say of Frida Ross-Palomino that she could sell ice to an Eskimo. Ms. Ross-Palomino was surprised at being named as Volunteer of the Year because she thought the award would go to her daughter Alicia, also a volunteer for the chapter. A Claremont resident for the past 7 years, Ms. Ross-Palomino is a native Californian. She grew up in West Covina. She and her husband, Eli (because, she says, nobody can spell Eliseo) are also parents of Daniella, a graduate of Claremont High School. Ms. Ross-Palomino serves as chairman of development and in-kind donations for the chapter, and does so with relish, according to all reports. She is described as someone who loves to

Amanda Van Esch was named Young Adult Volunteer of the Year for her participation in the Give a Day, Get a Day Disney program which led her activities as a Disaster Services Human Resources responder, Health and Safety instructor and all aspects of the Red Cross program. Board President Hilary La Conte on behalf of the Claremont Unified School District accepted the Good Neighbor Award of the Chapter. Contributions of the school district cited for the award include more than $150,000 raised through 33 years of bicycle marathons at El Roble, the efforts of the Claremont High School Cross Country Team, now in its third year of raising funds to assist the chapter in carrying out its disaster preparedness work in Claremont, the opening of facilities as

shelters during regional wildfires, along with access to the districts Central Kitchen as a feeding source, and the overall contributions of students throughout the district in helping victims of local, national and international disasters. Outgoing board members Kevin Grier, principal at El Roble, and Clara Murphy, a CHS student, were recognized for their service as well. Chapter officers elected for the coming year include Chairman Frank Bedoya, Vice-Chairman Rosie Bister, Immediate Past Chairman and Nominations Committee Fran Laughton, Board Secretary Penny Myrdal, Finance Committee Chairman Marci Alvarez and Philanthropy Committee Chairman Bill Buehler. They bring style to one of Claremonts favorite foods

ydia and Marnie Clarke, the very hip and highly personable owners of the Cheese Cave, have brought their knowledge, education and passion for cheeses, wines, chocolate and other delectable treats to the citizens of Claremont.
Lydia and Marnie Clarke moved back to Southern California from New York and Winchester, California, respectively, and decided to open the Cheese Cave when Marnie Clarke could not find a part-time job in this tough economy. We just always loved Claremont, even when I was in New York and Marnie was in Winchester, said Lydia. Whenever we came home we would ask each other, Where should we go? and the answer was always Claremont. The Cheese Cave is the sisters first business venture. The highlight of the Cheese Cave is the selection of cheeses ranging from domestic farming cheeses to overseas specialty cheeses. We want to make sure to support our domestic farmers. As a former cheese-maker for the Winchester Cheese Company, Marnie understands the difficulty farmers and other cheese-makers go through. Supporting them is how their cheeses end up on a restaurants menu. Some of the specialty cheeses include: Mahon Reserva from Spain, Red Dragon from Wales and, a personal favorite, Boxing Cheddar from Australia. On top of the selection of cheeses, the owners hope to have wine tasting and a beer list in the near future. The only thing in their way is the approval of their liquor license. To get the liquor license, we need to have two functioning bathrooms in our store, Lydia said. If it takes building another bathroom that is what we might have to do. The Cheese Cave owners hope to have their liquor license approved in the next month. We want to be able to tell our customers which cheese goes great with which wine, Lydia stated. The Cheese Cave, despite being newly open, has already gotten a lot of positive feedback from Claremonters who have been patiently waiting for this shop to open. We are thrilled about the Cheese Cave, it is a wonderful addition to our community, said Rose Ash from Claremont. I am a big cheese fan. My favorite

Does one species more or less matter?

by Susan Schenk

here is incredible diversity in the Earths ecosystems, from rain forest to desert, from tundra to ocean, from forest to the coastal sage scrub native to Claremont. Many of the organisms that make up this diversity, as well as their interactions, are still unknown. The more we study ecosystems, the more we discover about what makes them tick, and what is necessary for their continued existence.

demystifying sustainability
dle of Claremont. This inconspicuous organism produces an unusual chemical that is being investigated for its potential to fight bacterial infections, promote wound healing, and treat Type II diabetes Diversity is crucial to our food supply as well. The Irish potato famine was the result of massive planting of a single variety of potato which was susceptible to a fungus. Within weeks of spores arriving on a ship from South America, almost the entire crop was destroyed and thousands of people starved. In Peru, dozens of varieties of potatoes are planted. Many of these are resistant to this and other diseases so the whole crop is never lost. We need to find and preserve the genetic variety that has evolved so that we can use it in preventing the dangers of monoculture. Competition from honey bees (originally imported from Europe), along with habitat destruction, has led to a considerable decrease in our native bee populations. Recently a serious disease of honey bees, colony collapse disorder, has killed many hives, resulting in low crop productivity and economic disaster for many farmers. Efforts are now being made to preserve and increase habitat for native bees, which do not have the same susceptibility and which can work alongside honeybees to pollinate crops. As David Attenbourough stated: It is that range of biodiversity that we must care forthe whole thingrather than just one or two stars Normal gardening practices reduce biodiversity.

There are currently millions of species in the world. Millions more have become extinct, so should we be concerned if more die out now because of our actions? The extent of our options for food, medicine, education, recreation, and beauty depends on maintaining biological diversity as best we can. If habitats are destroyed then we will lose much that we value now, along with many opportunities to improve our lives. Chemical diversity in plants is astounding and the potential for new medicines exists in many, including those that inhabit the worlds rapidly disappearing jungles. Currently a Colombian potato relative is being assessed for its anti-malarial properties. Malaria kills more than a million people each year. If organisms vanish before we find or investigate them, opportunities, and lives, are lost. New discoveries can be made even in the midst of urban areasa species of lichen new to science was found recently at the Bernard Field Station in the mid-

The complex mix of local native organisms is replaced by a smaller group of exotic species which often dont provide food or shelter for native animals. Pesticides kill many of the local insects. Digging the soil and removing dead wood reduce living spaces. Using local natives in the garden, viewing chewed leaves as welcome evidence of wildlife, and leaving some areas uncultivated can help to offset the effects of habitat loss. No ecosystem is completely understood yet. Within any habitat type there are variations, such as between coastal sage scrub on the coast and inland. Even within our local sage scrub we have distinct variations such as the rare Riversidean alluvial fan sage scrub. Within each subtype, areas with slightly different conditions lead to the evolution of different species, some of which may exist only in a very small patch of land. Microorganisms, fungi, animals and plants all interact in complex ways so that it is exceedingly difficult to tease out what depends on what. The loss of one food source due to habitat destruction may not cause a species to become extinct. The loss of one species may not cause an ecosystem to collapse. The loss of one area may not cause the whole of a habitat type to disappear. However, we dont know where the tipping points will be. Thomas Jefferson said it well: For if one link in nature might be lost, another might be lost, until the whole of things will vanish piecemeal. We would be much the poorer for this. Its up to us to make sure it doesnt happen. Demystifying Sustainability is a project of Sustainable Claremont, sustainableclaremont.org.

Teachers, lawyers and taxes

Dear Editor: What a great discussion this is! We dont often talk about the worth of our social contracts and how we can pay for the jobs we want done. I think that Marcie Gardner [Saturday, June 19] in the last Viewpoint column might have missed the fundamental point when reading my initial letter to the COURIER, so let me clarify a couple of things. First, I am certainly not suggesting that people in general are not dealing with tough times. In point of fact, I have read in my students essays all too often over the past few years about the tough times their families are going through; and I know that everyone, including those in the professions I mentioned in my initial letter, along with lawyers and teachers, are coping with attacks on their pocketbooks. It is so true that we are all in this together. But secondly, I think the lawyer subordinated the key question I asked in my first letter. The question really is, are we as a society, community, city or neighborhood willing to increase our taxesacross the boardin order to fund the services we say that we support? I, too, am not an enconomist, but a quick Google search shows the average California lawyers salary is almost twice that of our states teachers.

readers comments
There are countless reasons why a lawyers salary might decline, but that lawyer in a free enterprise system has the ability to go out and find more clients. Furlough days are quite another matter, and the various justifications for furloughs are yet another. The argument has been made that if only teachers will accept furlough days, we can save jobs and continue to provide much needed services to our children. The catch is that people like Ms. Gardner want teachers to fund the solution. Furlough days are a tax legislated by a governmental agency on one select group to solve a budget shortfall. A lawyers or any other groups wages lost because of a struggling econony are not. A key component of this discussion is really how much do we value teachers and the jobs they do? As I said before in my first letter, I am part of a profession that has not been thought of as overpaid before this economic downturn; and yet, when times are tough, it is the group that is being asked to fund the solution. That doesnt seem reasonable when we are ALL in this together.

Taxing retirement savings

Dear Editor: In announcing his May revision of the budget, Governor Schwarzenegger proposes to tax occupied nursing home beds of residential retirement communities. These communities were excluded from paying this tax because the residents pay entrance fees that pre-pay future health and housing costs of their retirement. Moreover, at nearly one-half of these communities, the community itself is legally responsible to continue to provide care for residents who outlive their retirement savings. This proposal is especially important to Claremont because of the number of retirement communities located here and the financial impact it would have on our families. The governor, with Democratic leadership support, proposes adding $11.16 a bed per day to the bill of nursing home residents who pay out-of-pocket for their nursing home care. Moreover, these private pay residents are expected to pick up the cost per day not only of their nursing home bed, but also the cost per day of the Medi-Cal and Medicare residents residing in that nursing home, because the government does not pay taxes. This tax is only levied on occu-

pied nursing home beds meaning that people outside a residential retirement community are not taxed at all. In essence, the governor is requiring 87 year olds (the average age of a nursing home resident) lying in a bed to pay a tax out of their retirement savings that no other person is required to pay. Recognizing that almost two-thirds of nursing home residents are Medi-Cal patients and the large number of Medicare patients in nursing homes, it is unfair to ask private pay nursing home residents to pay taxes on themselves and Medi-Cal and Medicare residents, too. If this tax survives the legislative process, there will be a steady erosion of private pay residential skilled nursing care because fewer and fewer people will be willing to put themselves in a situation to have their retirement nest-egg taxed solely because they live in a residential retirement community. While the state has been dysfunctional for years, this proposal brings it to new lows. In a state that refuses to tax million dollar incomes, it is ok to tax the retirement savings of the old old living in residential care communities? Nursing home residents cannot get out of bed and fight for themselves. We must fight for them by vigorously opposing this illconceived tax. Write your California State Assemblyperson and Senator urging them to oppose this tax.

Thoughts and solutions from a CUSD teacher

by Mary Byers, Claremont Unified School District teacher

felt a need to respond to Marcie Gardners comments in the Viewpoint section of the Claremont COURIER [Saturday, June 19]. Steven Harrisons letter about a professional tax certainly doesnt represent my views and I believe that most, if not all, CUSD teachers would agree that all citizens are suffering from the financial downturn.
However, after attending board meetings and reading letters in the newspaper, I come away with the impression that some people in the community feel that teachers have somehow been insulated from these financial woes and that they are not doing their part. (We support our teachers, but.) We know the district has proposed furlough days. Additionally, most CUSD teachers will be paying thousands of dollars out of pocket for medical benefits, beginning in September 2010. I wonder if Ms. Gardner is aware of this. In the past many CUSD employees have taught summer school in order to make ends meet. This option is no longer available, thus compounding the financial hardship for many. In many ways, the impact on the public has been minimized in classrooms because many teachers cant bear to see the students suffer. Increasingly, we bridge the gap in public education with our own dollars (in my case $1500 last year when I switched grade levels and needed new materials). Even with wonderful parents who help out by donating supplies whenever they are able, times are tough and the needs too numerous to mention. Teachers are already paying out of pocket for everything from art and science supplies, computer equip-

view point
ment, and books, to Cheerios and cleaning supplies. We buy paper when the month ends and our school has no more. Ms. Gardner stated that, Ethically I cannot refuse to work on a clients case due to lack of payment. Well, thats the way I feel about students who cannot afford supplies. We buy the markers, pencil boxes, colored pencils, sharpeners, etc. for students who dont have the resources. As the economy has declined, the need to dip into our own pocketbooks has increased. All of this adds up quickly and impacts our monthly budgets immediately. Teachers have been subsidizing education for so long that I believe some people assume that this is the price one pays for being in the teaching profession (although no one would dare mention this out loud). Just like folks in other job sectors, I put in many unpaid hours throughout the year and summer to research, develop and plan my classroom curriculum. I enroll in computer skills courses and classroom management classes (often at my own expense) in order to stay current. I do all of this, not during paid hours as many people in business do, but after the teaching day is over, or on the weekends when Im not being paid. Finally, Ms. Gardner complained that she has taken a larger hit than the equivalent of furlough days that will affect teachers. I would counter that Ms. Gardner and her law firm reap great financial rewards during flush times. I might add that, like Ms. Gardner, I have student loans that I will be hard pressed to pay down as my income declines, so I do understand her concerns. In order to offset salary cuts, escalating medical costs and increased school expenses, and still be able

to pay the mortgage on my humble 1200 square-foot home, I will need to rent out a bedroom/bathroom beginning this fall. I dont want to sound churlish, but I doubt Ms. Gardners circumstances have reached this point. If so, I am offering accommodations at a reasonable price. So yes, I do think I understand the hardships of Ms. Gardner and I hope she can understand mine. Like Ms. Gardner, I would like to see a discussion about ways to solve the budget crisis that involves looking at all suggestions, including some very creative proposals presented by our bargaining unit. (Several of these proposals have not been made public due to the nature of negotiations.) The public also needs to keep in mind that until the district is willing to acknowledge, in writing, how the reserves will be used, there is NO guarantee that this money will be used to save jobs or maintain reduced class size. I would ask why the district is planning to make the same draconian cuts as districts that are infinitely worse off financially. While the amount of reserves mandated by the state as prudent is 3 percent, the district is currently sitting on reserves of 10 to 11 percent. Reserves actually increased this year. As the district has plans to spend this money down to some degree, and many budgetary analysts are suggesting an improved economy, wouldnt it make sense to do some pruning now and revisit the issue of salaries a year from now if more cuts are needed? Thomas D. McDonald
Thomas Duncan McDonald, formerly of Claremont, died under hospice care at his home in Laguna Beach on June 11, 2010, surrounded by family and his wife, Cheryl De La Cruz McDonald. Throughout his more than 3-year struggle with colon cancer that spread to his liver, he managed to continue working and eagerly played golf, a game that brought him great joy, up to 2 weeks before his death. Born at San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland, on November 23, 1958, Mr. McDonald grew up in Claremont, attending Mary B. Eyre Childrens School, Sycamore and Vista Elementary Schools, El Roble Intermediate School and Claremont High School where he was a member of the varsity basketball team. In 1980, he graduated from Pitzer College with a degree in environmental studies. After graduating from college, Mr. McDonald formed Conservatronics, an environmental services business in Claremont, which saved energy through

retrofitting lighting systems. Later in his career, he took sales positions in the electrical industry, including stints with Luma Lighting and Cooper Lighting. His last and longest tenure was with the McGee Corporation, a national electrical supply company where he began as a sales representative and rose to sales manager of the companys southern California operation. In 1978, Mr. McDonald married Megan Estes, his Claremont High School classmate. They had a son, Matthew Bryson McDonald, in 1984. After they divorced in 1987, Mr. McDonald moved from Claremont to Laguna Beach. In 1998 he married Cheryl De La Cruz, and they bought a home in the hills above Laguna where, as the common expression goes, on a clear day you can see Catalina. Mr. McDonalds family shared that he enjoyed a wide circle of clients and friends who warmly remember his ebullient and jovial spirit, a spirit that matched his large, imposing, athletic doctors. Mr. McDonalds cousins have written of many happy McDonald and Reynolds family gatherings in Claremont and Riverside, and of memories of Toms big smile, his loud and joyful laugh, his kindness, and gentleness. His cousin Susan Reynolds spoke of his ability to live one day at a time, to live cheerfully and comfortably, even as he fought his deadly fight. He ended most of his e-mails to me with have funsomething he did easily. Mr. McDonald is survived by his wife, Cheryl De La Cruz McDonald of Laguna Beach; his son, Matthew Bryson McDonald of Upland; his parents, Lee and Claire McDonald of Mt. San Antonio Gardens, Claremont; his siblings, Mary McDonald Alexander of Sacramento, Alison McDonald of Oakland and Paul McDonald of San Francisco, and their 3 spouses; his 4 nieces and nephews; and his 7 cousins within the Reynolds and Kingman families. William F. Lucas
game theory expert, professor
Claremont resident and professor emeritus of mathematics at Claremont Graduate University William F. Lucas died on June 7, 2010 after an extended illness. Mr. Lucas was born at home to immigrant parents on April 21, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan. Growing up with his 3 brothers in Detroit, he attended De La Salle High School where he developed a love of mathematics and science. He was an active young man who enjoyed playing football and basketball, running track and rowing on the Detroit River. He especially relished the strategic aspects of these contests, and some of his fondest memories from later in life were of his time coaching youth football. Mr. Lucas earned a bachelors degree in mathematics from the University of Detroit where he also obtained masters degrees in mathematics and physics. Subsequently, he attended the University of Michigan where he studied the burgeoning field of game theory and was awarded a PhD in mathematics in 1963. He and his brothers, 2 surgeons and a dentist, were affectionately known in their neighborhood as the doctors Lucas. Teaching proved to be Mr. Lucas innate gift, and he had a long and distinguished academic career that took him to many places. As a young man he held a variety of positions at Princeton University, the University of Wisconsin and the RAND Corporation. He accepted an appointment as a professor of operations research at Cornell University in 1969. During his 15 years at Cornell, he was active across campus, including serving as director of the Center for Applied Mathematics. In 1984, he moved to the Claremont Graduate School (now University) where he served as professor of mathematics until he retired in 1998. Mr. Lucas became a world-renowned expert in game theory who specialized in fair-division and voting systems. A prolific scholar, he authored over 50 academic articles. His most acclaimed academic contribution was disproving a long-standing conjecture of John von Neumann. A tireless contributor to the mathematical community, Mr. Lucas served on over a dozen editorial boards of major cluded a year as a Fulbright professor teaching at the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey from 196566; a 3-month scientific exchange visit to the Soviet Union in 1976, sponsored by the US National Academy of Sciences and the Soviet Academy of Science; and 2 months in Changsha, China as a guest of the Chinese Academy of Science from 1984-85. Furthermore, Mr. Lucas was a leader in shaping mathematics curricula around the world. In 2005, Mr. Lucas was honored at the LucasFest, which was held in Claremont and attended by more than a dozen of his former students, some coming from as far away as Japan, Israel and Taiwan. Mr. Lucas is survived by Carolyn Lucas, his childhood sweetheart, and wife of 52 years; by their 4 children, Robert, Thomas, Joan and Daniel; and by his 5 grandchildren. academic journals. He also edited and contributed to the 4-volume series Modules in Mathematics (later translated into Chinese) and the book For All Practical Purposes. A lifelong educator, Mr. Lucas was deeply involved in a breadth of educational activities. He supervised more than a score of PhD dissertations and a similar number of masters theses. He traveled around the world sharing his love of mathematics through a multitude of lectures and short courses. His travels in-

Ted Woodson

design engineer, educator, inventor, Habitat volunteer

Claremont resident Thomas Theodore Ted Woodson died with family present on June 11, 2010. A direct descendant of one of Americas first families (Jamestown 1619), Mr. Woodson was born in Crawfordsville, Indiana. He received his Bachelor of Science from Purdue and his Master of Science in electrical engineering from Ohio State. He was active in Christianbased peace and reconciliation movements. A design engineer for 25 years with GE and Waste King, Mr. Woodson invented the first GE automatic clothes washer. Following this era, he taught at the University of California, Los Angeles where he authored Introduction to Engineering Design, considered the best of its kind by Last Whole Earth Catalog, noted the family. Also at UCLA, Mr. Woodson co-founded the Brazil Project to promote economic development in the poverty stricken northeast. He then worked for USAID and UNESCO, which took him around the world to promote engineering education. In 1971, he joined the faculty of Harvey Mudd College where he co-founded and grew the first Engineering Clinic. Unhappy with the number of minority students in this field, he initiated the MESA program at Harvey Mudd, bringing minority students from San Bernardino high schools to the campus. For 50 years, Mr. Woodson was married to Marjorie Lois Bollinger, who died in 1985. He then married Mildred Shaw in 1986. After retiring from HMC in his 80s, he became a driving volunteer force for Pomona Valley Habitat for Humanity. To celebrate his 100th birthday in December 2009, 150 friends and family gathered. He will be greatly missed for his warmth, good humor, integrity, Golden Rule values and his quintessentially American can-do ingenuity, the family expressed. Mr. Woodson is survived by his wife Mildred Woodson; his children, Loren Woodson of Santa Monica, Craig Woodson of Chagrin Falls, Ohio and Claire Woodson Schlotterbeck of Brea; his daughters-in-law, Joanie Tepper Woodson of Santa Monica and Joan Hamilton of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; and 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 26, 2010 at Monte Vista Unitarian-Universalist Congregation, 9185 Monte Vista Ave., Montclair. Memorial donations may be made to Pomona Valley Habitat for Humanity, 2111 Bonita Ave., La Verne, CA 91750.

Transition to El Roble was his recipe for success

F

ourteen-year-old Tristan Moffatt made the most of his 2 years at El

Making the schools honor roll for 2 consecutive years, displaying a love for science and demonstrating leadership among his peers were all qualities that led to the incoming 9th grader receiving the 2010 Kevin Byrnes Memorial Award 2 weeks ago. I thought it was really cool, said Tristan about receiving the award. There were 4 people in the whole school that I heard were in the running and all of the other people were my friends that I didnt even know I was competing against. Tristan joins a select group of individuals who have won the award since its inception in 1987. In order to win the award, the candidate must be an 8th grader who is positive toward others, shows compassion and respect, has an overall enthusiasm for learning, has a sense of humor, willingly helps others and is creative in thought and action. Tristan not only possesses the qualities I believe are represented by this award, he motivates man, and has in fact renewed my motivation in teaching, El Roble teacher Sue Carter pointed out. He is curious to a fault! It is a real pleasure to have someone so interested in everything! Doing well in school has not always been easy for Tristan. According to his mother, Christine Moffatt, he was a student who reported to RSP, a form of pull-out tutoring, when he attended Chaparral Elementary School and needed help in Language Arts. Ms. Moffat said her son started improving when he started attending El Roble in 7th grade and enrolled in the Panther Team Program. The program is designed to help students successfully transition into middle school. Lydia Hernandez and Vince Rouzan were teachers for the program during the 2008-09 school year. It was a big turnaround for him in 7th grade, Ms. Moffatt said. At first, I wanted him to be with his friends, I didnt want him to be taken out of the normal settings and I didnt want him to be labeled. He wasnt labeled and he still was in normal classes. I realized that the Panther Team Program wasnt really for children who were troubled or behind but for those children who had a lot of

potential and to get them to try to apply that potential. According to Tristan, the program made a significant impact. He went from earning average and below average grades at Chaparral to becoming an A and B student at El Roble. It made everything a lot easier, he said. The teachers never let us slack. They told us if we didnt do our work that wed be in trouble and they stuck to it. They walked the talk and it helped a lot with everybody. Tristans success has been both a reason to celebrate and a sigh of relief for Ms. Moffatt. She is thankful for the teachers who helped her son reach a new level of academic excellence and that her sons challenges were identifiable. If it wasnt for these teachers who really believed in him, then he wouldnt be where he is now, Ms. Moffatt said. Active in Claremont Little Leagues Juniors Division as a member of the allstar team, a member of the California

Junior Scholarship Federation in 2009 and 2010 and endeavoring to study multiple sciences one day at a 4-year university, Tristan is a well-rounded teenager ready to transition into high school life. His success over the past 2 years has changed his outlook on the new challenges that await him at Claremont High School.

Before, I thought high school would be one of those things that you have to drag through, Tristan said. But now, Im looking forward to being challenged but also having fun. I want to be challenged but at the same time, not so hard where I cant play sports.

Foothill Transit implements fare increase, schedule changes

Foothill Transit will be implementing a fare increase on June 27 and system-wide service reductions on July 18, in response to a fiscal year 2011 budget deficit that originally threatened over $9 million in service cuts, according to the weekly City Managers report. The fare increase will raise the local base fare from $1 to $1.25 and would raise all other fares and passes by approximately 10 percent. The original proposal for service reductions included the elimination of 13 lines and significant reductions on others. The revised reductions will now amount to approximately $3 million in cuts, with only two lines being eliminated and some route and schedule frequency alterations.
