EUCOMAS 2012
Welcome of the Conference Presidents
The recovery of the global economy has also impacted the aerospace industry, which seems to have emerged from its trough faster than expected. Order books of aircraft manufacturers are filling up and production batches are being increased. Airlines are promising bulk orders while at the same time they keep asking for aircrafts with lower fuel consumption and operating costs. Subsequently, the pressure to be innovative in the aircraft industry is still high. New material and structure technologies play a decisive role in medium and short term programmes. Achieving a target-oriented, successful implementation of these programmes that combine the strengths and competences of the industry and those of public research is of great significance. With the EUCOMAS we can offer you for the fourth time the platform for professional exchange on the latest technologies and the initiation of cooperations between OEMs, KMUs and research facilities. As per request of our industrial partners and to keep the European character of the EUCOMAS it will as of 2012 take place biennially at aerospace locations in Germany and as of 2013 every two years in another European country. The EUCOMAS 2012, being the national kickoff conference will be organised at the Airbus location Hamburg, where we will offer you an extended industry-based programme which will be prepared by the BDLI in cooperation with the VDI, the DGLR and Carbon Composites e.V. We are looking forward to welcoming you at the EUCOMAS 2012 in Hamburg. Yours sincerely, Dr. Thomas Enders, President and Chief Executive Ofcer, Airbus
The fourth edition of EUCOMAS comes at a time when the aerospace industry enjoys a return to strong market demand. Healthy order books promise further solid growth of the industry in the coming years as amply illustrated by the steady stream of signicant contracts announced at the Paris Air Show and throughout the second half of the year 2011. The unprecedented success of the A320neo is mainly driven by the global need for increased fuel efciency. Clearly, modern and innovative engine technology plays the principal role in achieving this, but it is just one of the levers to delivering greater eco-efciency. Aerostructures and materials are just as important, especially on new aircraft designs. Aircraft manufacturers need new materials and processes to be reliable, fast and easy to integrate into mass production, especially when ramping up the production of both new and existing aircraft programmes. Operators want long-lasting materials and structures with low maintenance requirements and costs. And of course, everybodys paramount requirement is for them to be safe. With the current industrialisation of the A350XWB, every day the teams at Airbus and our partners experience the importance of innovative, yet mature, materials and aerostructures solutions. They need to be able to use them quickly, with good manufacturing and handling qualities, and at reasonable costs.
Rolf Philipp Managing Director, Aircraft Philipp GmbH & Co. KG, Germany
While the structures of current aircraft like the A380 and A350XWB already contain as much as 25 % and 53 % composite material respectively, upcoming aircraft designs will continue to build on that experience to improve performance and weight even further. In fact, with the automotive industry also set to take the use of carbon bre reinforced plastics to the next level, this promises to be one area of technology where we will see some exciting advances in both design and production in the near future. Therefore, sharing the knowledge and experiences between our industry sectors will become ever more important. Of course, such progress requires new skills in engineering, manufacturing and operations. Hence, fostering the development and training of experienced teams in sizable numbers for development and series production is critical to the successful application of new materials in innovative and eco-efcient products.
Patronage
Dr. Philipp Rsler, Federal Minister of Economics and Technology, Germany
For all these reasons, technology market places like EUCOMAS are extremely valuable and have my full support. I wish you all a very successful conference! Prof. Dr.-Ing. Johann-Dietrich Wrner, Chairman of the Executive Board, German Aerospace Center (DLR)
As a key hub for high technology, Germany needs innovative and creative companies that open up new technological horizons and transform new knowledge into successful products and processes. As an especially research-intensive sector of the economy, the aerospace industry is a crucial driver of technological progress. In this industry, materials and structures play a particularly important role. Whether they are used in airplanes, space shuttles or satellites, aerospace materials must possess special qualities and be able to withstand extreme conditions for long periods of time. More than anything, they have to be reliable and safe. These heavyduty, highly resilient materials facilitate the development of new products and foster improvements in other sectors of the economy. For example, todays innovations in the elds of electric mobility and alternative energies would be unthinkable without materials developed by the aerospace industry. The German governments innovation and technology policies actively support these innovation processes. For example, our aeronautics research programme supports research on new materials that can withstand extreme loads at high temperatures. Efforts like these help to strengthen and sustain Germanys position as a leading location for the aerospace sector and for technology in general. Networking is an essential factor in boosting innovation processes. The exchange of information and expertise helps to trigger good ideas and strategies. For this reason, I am especially pleased that the EUCOMAS conference has created a platform in Germany that fosters dialogue and collaboration in the elds of aerospace and innovation. It is a privilege to support this process by serving as patron of this years event. I wish the EUCOMAS conference great success and hope that all conference participants make valuable new contacts and enjoy stimulating, productive talks.
Innovation through R&D The technology of materials and the associated processes are paving the way for innovations in engine design as well as aerospace and aviation structures. Current developments on the use of bre compound materials in aircrafts show that the new materials can indeed initiate a radical change in design and functionality resulting in new ecological and economic perspectives that crank up business rivalry. Before we can actually apply new materials we have to cope with extensive and time-consuming research work all along the entire engineering chain. Only never-ending research work and cooperation with the different science and technology-related disciplines ensures the unleashing of the maximum innovation potential of new materials. The EUCOMAS provides the ideal aerospace-related platform for the exchange of ideas between science and industry in the eld of materials and structure technology.
