Answer All the Questions

11. (a) A steel rod of 35 mm external diameter and 25 mm internal

diameter encloses a copper rod of 15 mm diameter to which is
rigidly joined at each end. If, at a temperature of 5°C there is no
longitudinal stress, calculate the stresses in the rod and tube when
the temperature is raised to 200°C.
Take E (for steel) = 200GN/m2. E(for copper) = 100 GN/m2.
Α (for steel ) = 12 x 10-6 per°C. α (for copper) = 18 x 10-6 per°

(b) A bar 30mm in diameter was subjected to a tensile load of
54kN. The measured extension on 300mm gauge length was
0.112mm and the change in diameter was 0.00366mm. Calculate
the Poisson’s ratio and the young’s Modulus. (4)

12. (a) A stepped steel rod of total length 2m consists of three
portions. The diameter and length of the first portion are 32mm
and 1m respectively. The corresponding values for the second
portion are 28mm and 0.4m and those for the third are 25mm and
0.6mm respectively. Calculate the stresses developed in the three
portions and total elongation of the rod when an axial, tensile
load of 50kN acts on the rod. Take E = 2 x 105 N/mm2. (8)

(b) A bar of cross-section 10mm x 10mm is subjected to an axial

pull of 8000N. The lateral dimension the bar is found to be
changed to 9.9985 mm x 9.9985mm. If the modulus of rigidity
of the material is 0.8 x 105 N/mm2, determine the Poisson’s
ratio. (4)

13. A hollow shaft having an internal diameter 50% of its external

diameter transmits 600 kW at 150 rpm. Determine the external
diameter of the shaft if the shear stress does not exceed to 65
N/mm2, and the twist in a length of 3m should not exceed 1.7
degrees. Assume maximum torque = 1.25 of Mean Torque and
modulus of rigidity = 1 x 105 N/mm2.

14. A closely coiled helical spring is made out of 12mm diameter
steel rod. The coil consists of 10 complete turns with a mean
diameter of 140 mm. The spring carries an axial pull of 290N.
Find the maximum shear stress induced in the section of the rod.
If C = 80 GN/m2, find the deflection in the spring, the stiffness
and strain energy stored in the spring.

15. (a) Find the kinematic viscosity of an oil having density

981kg/m3. The shear stress at a point in oil is 0.2452 N/m2 and
velocity gradient at that point is 0.2 per second. (4)
(b) Water is flowing through a pipe having diameter 300mm and
200 mm at the bottom and upper end respectively. The intensity
of pressure at bottom end is 24.525N/cm2 and the pressure at the
upper end is 9.81M/cm2. Determine the difference in datum head
if the rate of flow through pipe is 40 litres / sec. (8)

16. The inlet and throat diameters of a horizontal venturimeter are 30
cm and 10 cm respectively. The liquid flowing through the meter
is water. The pressure intensity at inlet is 13.734 N/cm2 while the
vacuum pressure head at the throat is 37 cm of mercury. Find the
rate of flow. Assume that 4% of the differential head is lost
between the inlet and throat. Find also the value of Cd for the
centurimeter.

17. A centrifugal pump has outer diameter equal to two times the
inner diameter and running at 1000 rpm works against a total
head of 40 m. The velocity of flow through the impeller is
constant and equal to 2.5 m/s. The vanes are set back at an angle
of 40° at outlet. If the outer diameter of the impeller is 500 mm
and width at outlet is 50 mm, determine (i) Vane angle at inlet
(ii) Manometric efficiency.
(or)
18. The cylinder bore diameter of a single acting reciprocating pump
is 150 mm and its stroke is 300 mm. The pump runs to 50 rpm
and lifts water through a height of 25m. The delivery pipe is 22
m long and 100 mm in diameter. Find the theoretical discharge
and theoretical power required to run the pump. If the actual
discharge is 4.2 liters/sec, find the percentage slip. Also
determine the acceleration head at the beginning and middle of
the delivery stroke.

19. A Pelton wheel has a mean bucket speed of 10 meters per second
with a jet of water flowing at the rate of 7000 liters / sec under a
head of 30 meters. The buckets deflect the jet through an angle of
160°. Calculate the power given by water to the runner and the
hydraulic efficiency of the turbine. Assume co-efficient of
Velocity as 0.98.
(or)
20. A conical draft tube has diameter at the top as 2 m and pressure
head at 7 m of water (vacuum), discharges water at the out let
with velocity of 1.2 m/sec at the rate of 25 m3/sec. If the
atmospheric pressure head is 10.3 m of water and losses between
the inlet and outlet of the draft tubes are negligible, find the
length of draft tube immersed in water. Total length of tube is 5
m.
