BACKGROUND
2012 saw the successful launch of Discover Duhallow...A Day of the Region Initiative with over 40 events taking place throughout Duhallow over 10 days. This was a joint initiative with communities in 8 other European countries taking part in their own regions. Discover Duhallow... A Day of the Region is about capturing the essence of life in Duhallow and encouraging both locals and visitors alike to take part in the wide range of amenities, clubs and activities that are present though out our region. For 2013 communities and groups throughout Duhallow have actively developed the concept of Discover Duhallow in conjunction with The Gathering Ireland 2013. Duhallow communities for the month of July are showcasing and sharing the very best of culture, sport, tradition and the unique sense of fun they have to offer. With over 70 million people worldwide claiming Irish ancestry The Gathering is a perfect opportunity to reach out to our families, friends and descendents who have moved away to invite them home. This month long programme of activities will be a celebration of rural community life and will showcase what Duhallow has to offer those living here as well as those returning home to visit the region. Many people who are new to the area and working outside the region are unaware of the wealth of activities and resources available right here on their door step. From the programme of events included in this booklet it is evident that there is something for everyone, whether you are young or old, male or female, enjoy active events or want something more sedentary, the interests of everyone are well catered for. Duhallows strongest asset is its people and IRD Duhallow has supported them through the bottom up approach to rural development in identifying the events they wished to organise and host for this month of festivities and gatherings. The wide variety of events and the number of communities taking part is a perfect example of the strong sense of community spirit that has been fostered and developed in Duhallow. IRD Duhallow would like to thank all community groups and businesses for supporting this new initiative.
