No books, dictionaries, notes or any other written materials are allowed in this examination. 5.  Calculators, including scientific calculators, are allowed providing they are not programmable and cannot store or recall information. Electronic dictionaries and personal organisers are NOT allowed. 6.  Candidates who break ABE Examination Regulations (Conduct during the Examinations), or commit any misconduct, will be disqualified from the examinations. 7. This paper consists of THREE SECTIONS. Follow the instructions at the top of EACH section. SECTION A You must answer ALL SIX questions in this section. Questions do not carry equal marks. The mark allocation is shown after each question. Section A is worth 78% of the total marks available for the paper. Q1 (a)  Describe the main features of Perlmutters model of internationalisation.  (6 marks)

(b)  Assess the value of Perlmutters model in explaining the process of internationalisation in the airline sector. (6 marks) (Total 12 marks)

Q2  You are the Human Resources Director for an expanding international airline which recruits its cabin crew globally. You have been asked to brief the airlines cabin crew supervisors on issues relating to the management of cultural diversity. (a)  Explain the importance of understanding cultural diversity in the management of airline cabin crew. (5 marks) (b)  Outline Hofstedes five cultural dimensions and explain how they can usefully be used by cabin crew supervisors in the airline industry in relation to both their colleagues and their customers. (10 marks) (Total 15 marks)

Q3  You are the General Manager of a privately owned boutique hotel. You plan to move to the neighbouring 500 bedroom international brand property as Resident Manager. (a) Explain how and why the organisational structure of these two hotels will be different.   (8 marks) (b) Discuss how your role as a manager might change as a result of this move. (5 marks)  (Total 13 marks)

Q4  You are a consultant employed to advise the Minister of Tourism in a developing country which is keen to develop its international travel, tourism and hospitality industry.   (a)  Explain the nature of foreign direct investment (FDI) in travel, tourism and hospitality in developing countries. (4 marks) (b)  Discuss the benefits and possible problems associated with FDI in the travel, tourism and hospitality industry. (8 marks) (Total 12 marks)

Q5  Compare and contrast the management of tangible and intangible assets in the hotel sector.  (12 marks)

Q6  You have been asked by the World Tourism Organisation to provide guidance to governments and businesses on the role of sustainable development practices within the international travel, tourism and hospitality industry. In preparation for your guidance document: (i)  Examine the necessity of sustainable development in the context of travel, tourism and hospitality. Include examples of international good practice where appropriate.  (7 marks) (ii)  Discuss the changing international consumer expectations in relation to sustainable practice in the industry. (7 marks) (Total 14 marks)

(12 marks) OR: Q8  Discuss the function of management contracts in the internationalisation of the hotel industry and their effect on the management and performance of a hotel. SECTION C You must answer ONE question in this section. DO NOT answer BOTH Q9 AND Q10. Each question carries 10 marks. Section C is worth 10% of the total marks available for the paper. EITHER: Q9  Identify and discuss the technological factors which have contributed to the internationalisation of the travel, tourism and hospitality industry.
