In Kohler engine, oil level must be maintained at full mark on dipstick. Two cycle engines are lubricated by oil mixed with the fuel. The vehicle manufacturer recommends a fuel-oil ratio of 20:1 for the first 20 hours and 25:1 thereafter, using a good quality two cycle, two stroke or outboard motor oil.

The drive chain should be lubricated every 10 hours with lOW oil or STP lubricant. Do not over lubricate, but do not allow chain to run dry. Drive and suspension parts of machine are equipped with self-lubricating bearings or bushings and do not require attention.

The transmission or chain case should contain approximately % pint of Automatic Transmission Fluid Type A, or SAE lOW Motor Oil. Steering shaft and bushings should be lubricated with a few drops of engine oil occasionally. Track bearings are sealed type and do not require lubrication.

ADJUSTMENT

STEERING SKIS. A toe-in of V^inch, measured at tips of skis, is recommended. Tie rods can be adjusted after disconnecting either end. Because both tie rods should be adjusted to equal length, disconnecting at the common center end is recommended. DRIVE BELT. The torque converter drive belt tension should be adjusted so that, by squeezing the belt midway between pulleys, the two sides will come within l%-2 inches of touching. Adjust by loosening the four engine mounting bolts and sliding engine. Be sure pulleys are parallel and belt centers aligned after adjustment has been made. DRIVE CHAIN. On models with reversing transmission, the drive chain is not adjustable. On other models, adjustment is provided by slotted holes in bearing plate on pulley side of case. Chain tension is correct when deflection is approximately V2-inch midway between sprockets or backlash is %-% inch, measured at driven pulley rim. BRAKE. The band type brake contracts around an external drum mounted on left end of track drive axle as shown in Fig. 1. Drum should 34

be completely free to turn when brake is released, but should be fuUy applied before operating lever contracts steering grip. Adjust the brake at the two nuts securing lower cable housing anchor. The shoe type brake uses the fixed flange of torque converter driven sheave as a friction face. Brake shoe should clear sheave by approximately 1/16 inch. Adjustment is made at cable housing anchor. Refer also to BRAKE paragraph in TRACK DRIVE section of this manual.

is to adjust the two front suspension units to a plane even with skis and rear idler wheels when unloaded vehicle is setting on a level surface. (This adjustment is attained when mounting bolts are at top of slots on 1971 machine, slightly below top in earlier sleds). Lowering the front suspension units will remove some weight from steering skis and may improve the machine's ability to operate in deep snow. NOTE: On all models whenever track has been adjusted, alignment MUST be checked as outlined in TRACK SERVICE section of this manual.

TRACK. On models before 1970, raise rear of machine so that track is clear of ground, track should clear OVERHAUL center bogie wheels IV2-2 inches. Adjust Except for ski legs (spindles), steerby loosening the two nuts on each side which secure rear track axle hanger ing parts are interchangeable from brackets, then turning the adjusting right to left. The Tillotson carburetor screws until adjustment is correct. Both is equipped with a maximum speed limiting screw which may be set to sides must be adjusted alike. Track should not sag ferent widths as shown in Fig. 3. more than V4-inch. Adjust by loosening Suspension frame units can be rethe clamp screws securing rear bogie as- moved by loosening track tension and sembly to frame and tightening adjust- loosening the four clamping nuts. Power-Pack frame assembly can be ing screws equally. Track suspension unit frames are removed as a unit or parts may be rubber mounted, solidly bolted to removed individually. Refer to the vehicle frame. Mounting holes for appropriate Service Sections elserear unit are horizontally slotted for where in this manual for service on track adjustment. The two front units engine and drive parts. Refer to the appropriate paragraphs mount in vertical slots; refer to Fig. 2. The slotted holes are primarily for in GENERAL SERVICE sections of ease in assembly. They also provide this manual for overhaul specificasome adjustment for vehicle control. tions and procedures of vehicle comThe recommended normal adjustment ponents.
