REUTERS 3000 XTRA v4.

5 QUICK START USING REUTERS POWERPLUS PRO IN MICROSOFT EXCEL

You can use Excel worksheets to build your own displays with Reuters data. This section introduces several different methods of putting Reuters data into an Excel worksheet.

If you arent already running Microsoft Excel in Reuters 3000 Xtra, go to the Windows Start button and use the menus to select Programs / Reuters 3000 Xtra /Reuters PowerPlus Pro. The Reuters menu on the Excel menu bar gives you access to the relevant functions for working with Reuters data. If this is not available, contact Reuters Customer Support.

Drag and drop

To insert a single price into an Excel worksheet, simply drag the item from a Kobra display (either a pre-built display or one you have built yourself) and drop it in the relevant cell in the worksheet. For example, in Kobra press F4 for a pop-up quote window. In the command line of this window, type 0006.HK and press Enter. Move to Excel (the pop-up will still be displayed on top). You can now drag the Ask price (for example) from this pop-up up and drop it in a cell in your worksheet.

Anything on screen that you need to click on is printed in blue bold. RICs and other codes you use in a quote frame are printed in blue bold. News codes, report codes and keywords you use in a news frame are printed in orange bold.

If you are prompted to Enable Macros, you can do this with confidence. If you tick the box marked always trust macros from this source, then you will not receive this prompt again.

Speed lists
If you want to create a quote list and you know the exact names of the fields that you want to display, you can create the list very quickly. 1. In the worksheet, type the RICs of the instruments in a column of cells. Type the names of the fields in a row immediately above the column. 2. Right - click in a cell directly below one of the field names and select Real-time Speed List in the pop-up menu. This displays the data that you have specified.

Assistants
The Reuters Assistants give you step-by-step processes for creating different types of table. One advantage is that you can scroll through all the available fields to find the ones you want. To start creating a table of data, click on the cell that will be the top left corner of the table in the worksheet. Then select the relevant Assistant (as described below).

The figures in the spreadsheet are updated automatically as the prices change in real time. If you want to create a large or complex list, it is better to use the Reuters Real-time Quote Assistant (see Assistants later in this section). Some of the most commonly used fields are listed below (remember these have to be typed exactly for the speed list to work). DISPLAY NAME LAST BID ASK NET CHANGE PERCENT CHANGE VOL ACCUMULATED TRADE TIME stock name last traded price current best bid current best ask net change since the last open percentage change since the last open volume of stock traded so far since the last open time of the last trade

The Assistants button on the toolbar gives you quick access to all the Assistants.

Quote list
To create a quote list with price data that is updated in real time, click in the cell that will be the top left-hand corner of the list. Then select Reuters /Assistants /Real-time Quotes. There are separate steps for supplying the RICs and choosing the fields. In the final step, note the RtUpdate and RtGet buttons. If you have a large list of stocks, use RtUpdate; set the time to every 10 seconds (for example). This is a more efficient way of updating all the values in near-real time without Excel constantly recalculating.

Index constituents and chains

To create a quote list showing the constituents of an index or a chain of data (such as an options chain): 1. Click in the cell that will be the top left-hand corner of the list. 2. Select Reuters /Assistants / Real-time Chain. Once you have entered the chain RIC, the process is the same as for a quote list.

Fundamental data
To retrieve fundamental data, such as company accounts figures and key ratios, for one or more companies: 1. Click in the cell that will be the top left-hand corner of the list. 2. Select Reuters /Assistants / Security Instruments. Add the RIC of the instrument, then click on the Next button. 3. In step 2 of the Assistant, use the hierarchic list to locate and select the information you want to view. For example, expand Company; you can then select Company Details to include details such as the full company name, or you can expand Company Reports to work down to specific figures. Note the Code Converter in the list; this enables you to retrieve alternative instrument codes, such as CUSIPS, ISINs, etc. You can now complete the Assistant by accepting default values. Because the figures are generally very large, make sure you format the cells to view the values correctly when the list is displayed. For a history of fundamental data, such as five years P&L, on a single company: 1. Click in the cell that will be the top left-hand corner of the list. 2. Select Reuters /Assistants / Security History. Add the RIC of the instrument, then click on the Next button. 3. In step 2 of the Assistant, use the hierarchic list to locate and select the information you want to view. You can now complete the Assistant by accepting default values.

Price history
To create a table with a detailed price history (a time series) of a single instrument: 1. Click in the cell that will be the top left-hand corner of the list. 2. Select Reuters /Assistants / Time Series Data. Add the RIC of the instrument, then click on the Next button. 3. In step 2 of the Assistant, click to expand LAST TRADE, then select the data frequency (for example, Tick for every trade, or 1D for daily). You can then select the individual values (for example, open, high, low and close). Up to 30,000 ticks and 20 years of daily price histories are available. You can now complete the Assistant by accepting default values.

Modifying the worksheet

Once the data is in the worksheet, its easy to change the contents. To change any RIC in the table, simply type a different RIC in the cell and press Enter. Similarly, you can change any field by typing a different field name in the relevant cell. The values in the relevant column or row will be changed automatically. If you have used an Assistant to display a table, cells that you can modify are displayed in orange.

Options
For options, there is a huge range of analytics. These include options volatility and pricing functions, such as Black & Scholes and Cox, Ross and Rubinstein. Both standard and exotic options (Asians, Barriers, Lookbacks and others) are available.
