Sports Arbitrage Book:
Arbitrage Betting – Formula 1

Part 1: Betting Season

Formula 1 motor racing is arguably one of the most exciting of all spectator
sports - it is fast paced, noisy and glamorous. Formula 1 races take place at
exotic locations all over the world. It also has the distinction of being one of the
most expensive sports in which to participate!

Betting on Formula 1 motor racing results can be almost as exciting, especially if

you use the arbitrage betting system, a tested method of betting that virtually
ensures steady profits.

Formula 1 motor racing has its roots in the car racing of the 1920s and 30s,
although the rules were not standardized until 1946 and the first World Drivers’
Championship took place in 1950, won by Nino Farina.

The Italians dominated the early years of the sport, followed by British
supremacy – Cooper, BRM and Vanwall were names to be reckoned with. The
undisputed all time world champion is Juan Manuel Fangio whose five world
titles is still an amazing achievement.

The 1960s saw the beginning of the first car sponsorship - today, Formula 1
racing has become a multi million dollar industry, attracting huge sponsors and a
worldwide television audience of millions. Formula 1 racing teams and drivers
compete each year for two of sport’s most prestigious titles - the Drivers’
Championship and Constructors’ Championship.

Like most other sports, Formula 1 racing has a season - races generally occur
from around mid March to early November each year. The 2008 season featured
18 races; and for the first time ever a race at night, in Singapore.

The Singapore Grand Prix will take place on city streets and promises to be
popular with drivers and fans alike. Around half of all races take place in Europe,
although races are held in Asia, South America and the Middle East.

Part 2 - Betting Options

You can place bets for Formula 1 all year round, although as there is such a long
time between races, you can also wait until the season is under way. The
obvious advantage to this is it gives you a clear idea of how your driver or team
is performing and allows you to check statistics - although you may find shorter
odds are offered as well.

The odds may also change during the season. Races are generally spaced a
week or two apart and apart from the actual race itself, also include practice
days.

So why bet on motor racing? Apart from the fact that it is an exciting and fast
paced sport to watch, Formula 1 fans are often spoilt for choice, as it is possible
to place bets on several different scenarios - the winning team or driver or both;
as well as the top three finish and the top qualifier.

If you cannot get to the race course in person to see the outcome of your wager,
television coverage of Formula 1 is comprehensive and just as exciting to watch.

It can be fun to undertake serious research to try to increase the odds of winning
– taking into account past performance, trends, racing circuits, new drivers and
teams and anything else that may influence the outcome.

Events and people behind the scenes can also influence the outcome of a race -
the skill and speed of the pit crew and mechanics can have a huge influence.
And like most other sports, motor racing can be affected by the weather and
track conditions.

Part 3 - Sports Betting

Technology has always played a big part in affecting the outcome of a Formula 1
race. During the 60 years or so of its existence, the championship has seen
advances in technology, although never forgetting the importance of the driver.

Two of the major innovations occurred during the early years - during the 1950s,
Cooper’s revolutionary rear engine design led to two championship titles for Jack
Brabham and in 1962, Lotus introduced their one piece chassis.

Technology developed rapidly during the 1970s and 80s and Formula 1
engineers began to be referred to as designers. The late 1970s saw the
introduction of wings; and the early 1980s saw the widespread use of
turbochargers.

Perhaps one of the most significant innovations was the so-called “ground effect”
which used underbody design and side skirts, hugging the car to the ground.
Improvements in design continue to play a big part in racing performance today.

Several races are traditionally the highlights of the season. The Monaco Grand
Prix which takes place through the winding streets of the principality is always
exciting to watch.

At Monaco, the driver who gets pole position has an excellent chance of winning,
as it is extremely difficult to overtake on the tight circuit. And in the UK, the
British Grand Prix has become something of an institution since its inception in
1909, meaning a variety of betting options are available.

Sports betting is risky for the most part – many people who bet just occasionally
are inexperienced and unknowledgeable. Many sports fans simply bet on their
favorite team and often do not care too much whether they win or lose.

In fact, over 90% of people who bet on sporting events lose money; only a small
percentage actually wins on a regular basis. However, there is a method of
increasing the chances of winning, which is both easy and effective.

Part 4 - Arbitrage Betting

Arbitrage – or arb as it is simply sometimes known, involves placing a bet on

each different outcome, with several different bookmakers.

The term was originally applied to certain transactions in the financial trading
world; the word itself comes from the Latin word “arbiter”, meaning to judge.
Those same principles that have earned fortunes in the financial markets can
also be applied to sports betting.

Simply put, it is the means of covering every possible option by taking advantage
of the difference in odds offered by different bookmakers.

The simple way to explain it is as follows: if you bet $100 on car A with one
bookmaker and $100 on car B with another bookmaker; if both bookmakers
offered the same odds of 6/4, you would win regardless of which car won.
Another way to put it – if you bet on every possible outcome, you cannot lose.

Why do different bookmakers offer different odds? Many bookmakers have a

quota system – once they have taken a required number of bets at certain odds,
they may raise or lower the odds.

A sporting event with an uncertain outcome or a lesser number of participants

tends to create discrepancies in the odds. And when everybody is patriotic – if
the UK is competing against the USA, you may find that bookmakers in the two
countries offer different odds in favor of the team they support.

The obvious advantage of arbitrage betting is that if applied systematically, it is

difficult – or impossible to lose money.

Part 5 - Arbitrage Advantages

Arbitrage betting is not just limited to Formula 1 racing - it can just as

successfully be applied to other sports such as football, tennis, snooker, golf,
cricket, hockey and darts. In case you are wondering, sports arbitrage is entirely
legal, just as long as your local laws allow for gambling or betting online.

Arbitrage betting can be done at any bookmaker, both offline & online. Just
remember, you are placing different bets with different bookmakers, so it can be
time consuming shopping around trying to find the right bookmaker and the right
odds.

With the help of the internet, you can easily place bets from the comfort of your
own home, at the same time as the number of online bookmakers increases,
your opportunities to profit, also increases.

Most sports betting arbitrage scenarios give you a return of between 2% to 4%,
although it is possible to find higher rates of return.

If you are checking out online betting sites, always read the small print on the
site and make sure you are familiar with any rules and restrictions. Several web
sites also provide up to date information on the current Formula 1 racing season
- race schedules, winners and other news.

You may almost never get to actually drive a Formula 1 racing car but betting on
the races can be the next best thing! A betting system that guarantees success
may sound too good to be true fortunately arbitrage betting really does work very
well. On top of that, there is usually no tax on your winnings, at least in most
countries that we know of.
