Bea Beas Slippers

Comfy slippers to keep your toes toasty on a chilly night. A pair in size medium needs no more than a couple of hours knitting time and one skein of worsted weight yarn the perfect pattern for those odd skeins most knitters have in stash. I made the pattern up and knit the first pair as a gift when visiting my long time friend Bea, hence the name.

Material: about 100 g / 200 m (220 yards) of worsted weight yarn for size small and medium, about 150 g / 290 m (315 yards) for size large , circular needle in 4.5 mm (US size 7) 100 cm (40 inches) long for magic loop, two short circs in a smaller needle size for magic cast on, darning needle

Shown in: Malabrigo Rios in Azul Profundo

Gauge: 20 stitches to 10 cm (4 inch) in garter stitch, measured unstretched.

Size: The size is determined by the number of stitches cast on. Due to the stitch pattern the slippers have got a lot of stretch and fit several shoe sizes comfortably. Small ~ EUR 35 to 37 (US 5 1/2 to 7), Medium ~ EUR 38 to 40 (US 7 1/2 to 9), Large ~ EUR 41 to 43 (US 9 1/2 to 11 1/2 )

Note: The slippers shown in size medium with a long fold down cuff used 103 grams of Malabrigo Rios (192 m/210 yards to 100 g). To make sure you dont run out of yarn, divide your yarn into 2 equal balls and use up one ball per slipper, adjusting the cuff length accordingly. The instructions given are for size medium, with instructions for small and large in brackets.

Instructions:
Sole
Using a toe-up cast-on method like the Turkish, Figure-8 or Judys Magic cast on, cast on 80 (72/84) stitches, 40 (36/42) stitches on each circ. Start to knit with 4.5 mm (US 7) long circular needle. Set up over 1.5 rounds: Purl 40 (36/42) stitches on needle #1, knit (or knit through back of loop, depending on type of cast on) 40 (36/42) stitches on needle #2, place marker to determine middle of the round, knit next 40 (36/42) stitches, place marker to determine beginning of round. Round 1: purl Round 2: knit 1, M1, knit to one stitch before middle of round, M1, k1, slip marker, k1, M1, knit to one stitch before end of round, M1, k1 = 4 stitches increased, total of 84 (76/88) stitches Repeat these two rounds 3 (3/4) more times = 96 (88/104) stitches

Main part (transition from sole to top of foot)

Round 1 to 6: [ktbl 1, p1] x 8 times, [ktbl 1, p3] x 8 (7/9) times, slip middle marker, [ktbl 1, p3] x 8 (7/9) times, [ktbl 1, p1] x 8 times Round 7: work stitches as set in pattern until 2 stitches before marker, purl 2 together, slip marker, ktbl 1, purl 2 together through back loop, work stitches as set in pattern to end of round All even rounds from 8 to 18: work stitches as set Round 9 : repeat round 7 Round 11: work stitches as set in pattern until 4 stitches before marker, purl 2 together, ktbl1, p1, slip marker, ktbl 1, p1, ktbl 1, purl 2 together through back loop, work stitches as set in pattern to end of round Round 13: repeat round 11 Round 15: work stitches as set in pattern until 6 stitches before marker, purl 2 together, [ktbl1, p1] x 2 times , slip marker, [ktbl 1, p 1] x 2 times, ktbl1, purl 2 together through back loop, work stitches as set in pattern to end of round Round 17: repeat round 15 = total 84 (76/92) stitches

Instep
Set up for instep: Set up round 1: [ktbl1, p1] x 8 times, [ktbl1, p1, p2tog] x 5 (4/6) times, [ktbl 1, p1] x 3 times, slip marker, [ktbl1, p1] x 3 times, [ktbl1, p2tog tbl, p1] x 5 (4/6) times, [ktbl1, p1] x 8 times = total 74 (68/80) stitches Set up round 2: work stitches as set in pattern until 6 stitches before middle of round marker - the following 13 stitches will be used for the instep Row 1: work 12 stitches as set in pattern, ssk, turn Row 2: sl1, work 11 stitches as set in pattern, p2tog, turn Row3: sl1, work 11 stitches as set in pattern, ssk, turn Repeat last two rows (row 2 and 3) 11 (10/14) more times, but when you work the last repeat of row 3 don't turn but continue to work in set pattern to end of round. Next round: [ktbl1, p1] x 9 (8/9) times, k2tog, work in established pattern to end of round = 48 (46/48) stitches

Cuff
The cuff is done in [ktbl 1, p1] ribbing and can either be an ordinary sock cuff (one layer) or a folddown cuff, which is up to your preference and the amount of yarn youve got available. One layer cuff: Work in [ktbl 1, p1] ribbing to desired length. Fold down cuff (as shown in the pictures): To ensure that the "rising" stitches created by knitting through the back of loop show on the outside of the slipper, you will need to change which stitches are worked this way. When you've worked half of the cuff, i. e. your cuff has reached the height at which you want it to fold down (example shown: 18 rounds) you can either continue working around but [k1, ptbl1] OR turn your slipper inside out and work in the other direction as follows: At the end of the round wrap the first stitch of the following round, turn and work in the other direction, continuing in [ktbl1, p1] ribbing pattern. For the second half of the cuff you should work 2 rows more than for the first half (example shown: 20 rounds). Bind off loosely, using your preferred method of stretching bind off, for example Jenys surprisingly stretchy bind off. Weave in ends and start the second slipper right away.

Happy knitting!
