Chapter 5 SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS This chapter presents summary of findings, conclusions arrived at, and recommendations made in relation to the entire research study. Summary The study is entitled Childcare Practices of Households of Various Socio-economic Status in Selected Barangays in Cabanatuan City Descriptive-Correlational research was used to gather data from 90 respondents who were mothers belonging to different socioeconomic status namely: Low, Very Low, and Higher Middle in selected barangays in City of Cabanatuan. The classification of SES was done using the Market and Opinion Research Society of the Philippines Socioeconomic Classification of Households. Questionnaire was the main tool of the study. Purposive sampling was used to select target respondents in answering socio-economic status, profile of the respondents, childcare practices and significant relationship and difference related to the variables of the conduct. This study was accomplished from January 2013 to March 2013.

Summary of Findings 1. Socio-economic status of the households In neighborhood, most were mixed neighborhood with
predominantly small houses (67.8%) while the home durability was made of light and cheap material, poorly-constructed (60%). In Outdoor Quality, painted but may need some repairs acquires 52%. Most household heads are Tenants, office workers, minimum-salary workers, non-professionals (48.9%). In Educational Attainment,
majority of the respondents finished secondary education (27.8%). Moreover, 5 7 facilities, with or without car has the highest percentage with 57.8%. While most of the respondents monthly income ranges P8, 001-15,000 (40%). 2. Profile of the Respondents There were more male (59.2%) than female children in this undertaking, with Age 6 (18.6%) as the majority age of child. In the sex of household head, male obtained the higher percentage than female with 91.1%. Roman Catholic (70%) is the majority religion of the respondents. While in the age of mother, range of age 29-32 obtained the highest frequency with 50% and majority of them are High school undergraduate (22.4%). Most of the spouse of

Household Head is unemployed with 53.4% whereby majority of mothers are literate with (96.7%). 3. Childcare Practices The children from various socio-economic status always
consumed Go foods such as rice, corn, and bread, bathed everyday. These children have completed all vaccines when in need. Moreover, mothers preferred to seek medical professionals to treat the disease of their children. 4.1 Bases of Childcare in terms of Sources of Information Feedback loops obtained the highest percentage with 49.7%. 4.2. Bases of Childcare in terms of Beliefs Mothers believe that breastmilk is more nutritious. The
respondents also believed that child should be in an abdominal binder until six months to prevent flatulence and increased abdominal size. In preventing disease, they believed in applying saliva in childs abdomen or sole of foot to prevent usog. Moreover, when a child has serious symptoms, it is necessary to bring him in the hospital. 5. Significant relationship between the profile and the child
caring practices of the respondents Only the Age of Mother with p value of 0.1994 has significant relationship with the childcaring practices of the respondents.

respondents and bases of childcare practices Only Sex of Household Head with p value of 0.2025 and Literacy of Mother with p value of 0.2036 both interpreted to have significant relationship with the bases of childcare. 7. Significant difference in the Childcare practices when
grouped according to Socio-economic status With ANOVA result of 2.8884, there is no significant difference in the childcare practices of the respondents when grouped according to different socio-economic status.
Conclusions Based on the results and findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. Respondents live in a mixed neighborhood with predominantly
small houses made of light and cheap material, poorly-constructed; Some were high school graduates having 5 7 facilities with monthly income of P8, 001-15,000. 2. There were more male than female mostly 6 years old. Male as
the household head and were Roman Catholic. Age of mother ranges

29-32 years; majority were High school undergraduate and literate. Most of the spouses of the Household Heads were unemployed. 3. Households of various socio-economic status observed proper
childcare practices in nutrition and hygiene. The children have completed all vaccines when in need. In health restoration, mothers preferred to seek medical professionals to treat disease of their children. 4. Feedback loops were the most common sources of information.
The common beliefs about bigkis and usog were still present. 5. As the age of the mother increases, the more proficient they are
in childcare practices. 6. Females acquire more information than males for mothers are
mostly at home all day. Literacy affects the understanding of mothers to different forms of information, communication and education related to proper childcare. 7. Very Low, Low, and Higher Middle socio-economic classification
have no difference in terms of childcare practices. Therefore, any socio-economic status can provide quality healthcare or childcare practices.

Recommendations The following recommendations are made based on the findings and conclusions of the study: 1. Health education campaigns through Information,
Education or Communication materials or means may be promulgated on the importance of breastfeeding among mothers. Inculcation may be focused on discouraging breastfeeding their newborns or infants to other mothers. 2. Health promotion through teachings or other forms of
education may be implemented to provide explanations on the undesirable effects of saliva as a common practice in the prevention of usog in communicating diseases; and other folk beliefs such as bigkis that could harm the health of children. 3. Health promotion activities may be provided through mass
media: television commercials/advisories, radio programs, or the like. 4. Healthcare practitioners may open the minds of mothers in
answering questions related to childcare versus their ideas from the feedback loops gained from various sources.
