Recycled Aggregates for Vibro Stone Columns..New Source Material identification

2013

INTRODUCTION Vibro stone columns are used for ground improvement processes in the United Kingdom and most part of the world. The technique has developed in response to environmental pressure and requirements for improved performance and sustainability (Serridge, 2006). The recycled aggregates used in this technique are required to be free-draining, hard and inert, and comply with acceptable criteria in terms of material type, grading, hardness and chemical stability (Serridge, 2005). They are required to improve the bearing capacity of soils, reduction of total and differential settlements and to accept the magnitude of proposed loading and provide acceptable long term performance. A number of different sources of recycled aggregates have been trialled in vibro stone columns but with naturally won materials becoming unsustainable. This project is aimed to identify new source of recycled materials that will be suitable for stone columns from which costing models will be assessed. The project is entirely based on thorough research from literature reviews of related published and unpublished work.

1.1

RESEARCH AIM: The main aim of this research was to identify new source material of recycled aggregates suitable for vibro stone columns.

1.2

OBJECTIVES: In order to achieve the aim set for this research, the following objectives were to be metIdentifying the different sources of recycled aggregates that have been trilled in vibro stone columns. Examine the characteristics and requirements of most of the recycled aggregates used. Check to identify new source material that will help in improving sustainability in ground technique.

PRELIMINARY REPORT OBJECTIVES (28TH MAY REPORT) Literature review of related published and unpublished work. Basic knowledge of the Vibrated Stone Column ground improvement technique. Determining the Aims and Objectives of the project research. 1

CHALLENGES FACED SO FAR IN THIS WORK During the preliminary studies, the difficulty encountered was to understand the content of the research, whether to identify new materials for vibro stone columns or identifying new source material for vibro stone columns. .

CONCLUSION Within the spring term that this research study was started, the following has been achieved: A Comprehensive review of the different sources of recycled aggregates that has been trialled in vibro stone columns as well as their characteristics and requirements. A fundamental understanding of the subject of the project was developed. This has led to the development of the preliminary literature review on the project topic as presented in the other report. Developed basic idea about the project, only need to expand on the research skills to be able to compile a proper comprehensive report.
